G14: Red Sox 6, Spiders 4

Red Sox - 100 000 113 - 6 12 0
Spiders - 000 220 000 - 4 7 1
You puny Cleveland mortals ... did last October teach you nothing? Do you not realize that you are powerless to stop the mighty Red Sox Baseball Machine?

The Sox scored a run in the first, and saw 32 Westbrook pitches. Coupled with Phil Hughes's performance last night, the Bostons have seen 71 pitches in their last two first innings.

Lester was sharp through three innings, but stumbled in the fourth (allowing four of the first five batters to reach) and fifth (five of the first six Cleveland hitters reached base). Julian Tavarez came in and struck out two Spiders to end the fifth, then pitched well through the next two innings. And then Timlin threw a perfect eighth! OMG!!1!!!

In the meantime, the Red Sox chipped away at Cleveland's 4-1 lead. Sean Casey started the seventh with a walk and was forced by Julio Lugo. Singles from Coco Crisp and Dustin Pedroia brought Lugo home and ended Westbrook's night. Rafael Betancourt struck out both David Ortiz and Manny Ramirez to end that threat.

However, Kevin Youklis opened the eighth with a solo home run to left -- and the Spiders' lead was cut to 4-3. In the ninth, facing "closer" Joe Borowski, Lugo doubled down the left field line, was bunted to third by Crisp and scored on a fly ball to left by Pedroia. Tie game 4-4. Ortiz singled to left (he finished the night 2-for-5) and Manny followed with a first-pitch home run to deep left. Youkilis doubled, but Drew struck out to end the inning.

Jonathan Papelbon made quick work of Grady Sizemore (bsc: K), Asdrubal Cabrera (bcbs: K) and Travis Hafner (b: F8) and the win was secured.

Baltimore beat Toronto 4-3, so Boston moved into second place, .5 GB the Birds. The Yankees nearly blew a 7-2 lead to Tampa, winning 8-7 to move out of the AL East basement into fourth place.

Jon Lester (4.50, 96 ERA+) / Jake Westbrook (2.76, 152 ERA+)

Ortiz:
I know exactly what I'm doing wrong. Everything is right here [pointing to his head]. ... I have to stop thinking too much and fighting myself. I've been there before. I've been messed up before. Big time. Big time. I know I'll be out of it at some point. It happens to all of us. I'll be all right. This game is very mental. Your mind takes over. I know in my situation, my mind works more than anything else. Once you get physically prepared your mind takes over and sometimes you're fighting, fighting, fighting [yourself]. ... The manager can see things. Terry knows what to do. I always do everything Terry tells me to do.
Jeff Horrigan has some cool tidbits, including the fact that Ortiz:
went a career-worst 0-for-27 from Sept. 26, 1998 to April 4, 2000, with Minnesota, including all 10 of his big league at-bats in 1999.

The Sox stole four bases in a game for the first time since July 19, 2003, vs. Toronto. It was the first time they had stolen four vs. New York since May 3, 1995, at Yankee Stadium. ...

Jacoby Ellsbury's first-inning steal made him 11-for-11 in the majors. He is the first Sox rookie to begin his career with 11 consecutive successful steals since Lee Tinsley swiped 15 straight from the start of the 1994 season through April 28, 1995.
Bad Man Watch: Since the start of the 2006 season, Manny Ramirez is hitting .550 with eight home runs and 24 RBI in 18 games against the Yankees at Fenway.

Not that I believe in these things, but tonight I am wearing my old Tizzle t-shirt. Where the breast pocket would be is "David Ortiz Fan Club" in a circle around a picture of Esther Rolle.

On the back is his September 2003 comment about barbeque sox, apple sox and THE sox.

(Are you telling me Rolle doesn't look like Ortiz? That's why he's called Flo.)

Not a bad lineup, considering OcOc is hitting well. Navajo gets the night off against the Tribe...

Just a thing I noticed on the weekend - you made a post for one of the games about Tizzles struggles, and whether the fenway faithful would boo him...

it goes without saying that I, along with everyone else here (i hope) wouldn't. But imo, it seemed like Fenway was really cheering on ortiz, supporting him to come out of this slump. They showed signs that said like "we support you" etc - definitely no booing, thats one of the things i LOVE about this team. They know better than to boo someone like him.

tim said...

my oatmeal wasn't tasty enough? ;-)

Amy said...

Gotta love Ortiz. I doubt there is anyone who hasn't at some time had a mental block stopping them from doing something that they know they can do and even have done before. There is nothing harder than getting that crap out of your head. I hope he finds his way quickly.

allan said...

my oatmeal wasn't tasty enough? ;-)

Yer oatmeal is just fine! But I can't refresh my dashboard every second!

Sequence of events: Put thru comments (before yours was posted), went off to find lineups, posted lineups, went off somewhere else, came back and put thru comments, including yours.

Now off to feed dogs and make dinner.

Lugo talked about how supportive the fans were during his horrific summer slump. Said it really helped him. So if they can do it for Lugo ...

Hey guys
I read this blog all the time but I've never commented. Was hoping you fine folks could help me out with something though. During last night's game, two Sox fans in the crowd were wearing home made t-shirts that said LMB Yankees. Any idea what that means?
Thanks!

"Just saw a couple of Sox fans wearing t-shirts that said, "L.M.B. Yankees." I'm not sure if I should be proud or not when I say I broke the code in about .00094 seconds."

And in comments he wrote: " I was assuming it meant Lick My ... you can get the third word."

Not sure if he's right, though ... these crazy kids these days with their new fangled shirts.

Zenslinger said...

"Butt"? "Behind"? "Beans"?

allan said...

shit - got the cleveland morans, whoever they may be.

allan said...

Morans:
Matt Underwood
Rick Manning

Alright, EI. I will accept these guys tonight in exchange for not getting YES later in the week. Deal?

allan said...

I vote "balls".

Jere said...

Balls. Lick my balls.

Second time Tinsley has come up today, as I saw him in the ALDS Game 1, 1995 on ESPNClassic today.

Right, all the "boo Ortiz" talk is based on nothing. But here's what the media does: I heard a caller on radio say, "I was at the game Friday, and I don't know what people are talking about, I heard no boos for Papi, so I don't know who those people are..." Host, instead of, "Oh, nobody booed him? Okay" says, "the same people who booed Bill Buckner on Opening Day. Keeping the myth going.

I was there Friday, too, and Tuesday, and Wednesday, and nobody booed (or would boo) David Ortiz after a couple bad games.

Jere said...

forgot to close my quote above. "Keeping the myth going" is a comment by me, not a continuation of what the host said.

allan said...

in 13 games, fy has 7 multi-hit games. yet he's hitting .283. he must get either 2+ hits or 0.

Jere said...

Straighten it proverbially out, Dustin

Jere said...

Is Florida saying "panties" in that screenshot?

s1c said...

Time for Papi to get this slump over with.

Time to go get my grilled cheese also!

Jere said...

MLB EI giving you YES both nights, according to this. Though I think we've determined this isn't set in stone, at least in Canada?

Jere said...

Grilled cheese rules!

allan said...

YES?

Fuck. Hope it ain't true.

Jere said...

Yeah Papi!!!! 1st and sec

allan said...

PAPI UNLEASHED

A Papi hit! Hurrah.

Grilled cheese? No comprendo.

Jere said...

I love when he goes opp. fie.

s1c said...

Pepperjack grilled no less and Papi gets the hit!!!

Jere said...

It's cheese, placed between two slices of bread, and grilled.

Zenslinger said...

Did they have the split on?

Ortiz average soars 21 points...

Jere said...

Second time I've watched Manny at Jacobs, or former Jacobs, Field today. Alicea, too. ALDS Game 1, '95, as mentioned above. Tavarez and Embree on the Tribe in that game, too.

Jere said...

I prefer American, and white bread, and cut once diagonally.

laura k said...

Oh yes, I'm fond of it myself. Especially with bacon and tomato. Hal of which I know you wouldn't eat.

So your comment "grilled cheese rules" was simply a meditation on your dinner? I thought it was like, you know, oatmeal.

allan said...

busy ragging on manny doing the mummy. ... who went to the WS last year, a-holes? right. da mummy.

Jere said...

Not my dinner, his. But yes. Grilled cheese doesn't mean anything...yet.

laura k said...

It's the only thing white bread is good for. But I would still prefer sourdough, challah or baguette.

laura k said...

Allan and I are both modding, so I miss comments and get confused. :)

Jere said...

Manny settin' him up for later. Definite dong later. No Remy, he wasn't fooled, he was settin' him up! Ha.

Jere said...

Yeah Youk! Grilled cheese!

laura k said...

yoooooooook

listen to the yook cheers! in cleveland. nice.

s1c said...

Grilled cheese in this house is usally accompanied with tomato soup. No soup tonight though.

Youk!!!

Jere said...

Yeah I'll take grilled cheese on basically any kind of bread.

Zenslinger said...

Yook!

CBS called Manny's SO pitch an 80 mph slider.

laura k said...

I never eat it at home, but I love to have it in diners, with onion rings. For me that is serious comfort food.

s1c, anything in the tomato soup, or just plain tomato?

s1c said...

Nothing in the soup but lots of pepper.

It would be nice if Tek got a hit with the bases loaded.

allan said...

39 pitches from hughes in the 1st last night.

30 so far tonight from westbrook.

allan said...

sigh. tek being tek.

s1c said...

mumble, grumble, mumble

Jere said...

I don't like soup. But back to grilled cheese. I call it "gerch," which is the phonetic spelling of what it says on your diner check: GrCh.

Jere said...

brak brak tonight

laura k said...

You don't like soup? Any kind at all?

I love soup. Love love love. All kinds, the heartier, the better?

How can you be a vegetarian and not eat lentil or black bean soup? Must be tough.

allan said...

32 pit for westbrook.

last 2 1st innings: sox have seen 71 pitches!!!

Jere said...

can't be doin' that

Zenslinger said...

CBS has his second and fifth pitches (called balls) right in the strike zone.

Jere said...

Well if lentils, like dhal that you get at Indian places, counts, then I like it. But generally the concept of "stuff floating in broth" nauseates me, so I can't eat it.

Living in San Francisco also = no bugs.

You pay for it, though.

Jere said...

Oc oc to brak brak

laura k said...

You pay to live anywhere good. No bugs is one of SF's many charms.

I love it there. (All NYers do.)

allan said...

how cool would it be when the mfy go to cleveland and the bugs come out and swarm joba?

answer: very cool.

Zenslinger said...

Some call it Boston West, Laura. Not to me, though.

Yanks are up 3-0 over Tampa. Solo HRs by Damon, Rodriguez, and Ensberg off Sonnanstine.

Jere said...

All NYers love SF? Why's that?

laura k said...

Boston West? Wow, I'd never think of that.

SF is just one of my favourite places.

Jere said...

braK

laura k said...

Of course I shouldn't say all. But for many NYers, SF is the only other US city that they really, really love and can see themselves living. It's a very common sentiment.

laura k said...

was brak's father's named karb?

Rob said...

Ian Kennedy on the mound for those MFY... no lead is safe for them.

Zenslinger said...

Some call SF Boston West it's a small big city, not a big big city like New York. Perhaps also because of the rocky coast, coolish weather, liberal atmosphere? I don't know, the comparison has never sat that well with me.

Rob said...

The teeth of advertising have chomped down on the former Jacobs Field... This is now Progressive Field.

laura k said...

It's not The Jake anymore?? "I did not know that."

Insurance company, sadly. Not democratic socialist tendencies.

laura k said...

Boston/SF, I guess that's it, but it doesn't work for me. The cities have such entirely different feels.

Oh well.

Rob said...

Dave O'Brien, to Castig: "All of a sudden you've turned into Chris Berman."

laura k said...

Turn into Chris Berman, that's a low blow!

Jere said...

Rays score. 3-1.

allan said...

the rock n' roll HOF, then the Beach Boys

yeah ... there are two things that go together ... n't.

we went to the RRHoF -- what a fucking shitty dump that is.

Zenslinger said...

Well, nothing particularly compares to New York. Tokyo, in a sense, but only in terms of scale and density.

If New Yorkers like San Francisco, it must be because it's a change of pace. Beautiful, less hectic, but still enough food & culture to qualify.

Just my guess. I'm from upstate New York and don't know what it is to live in the City.

allan said...

sound off the bat truped me.

laura k said...

SF is the only other US city where I feel an intensity and an energy like I do in NY.

The diversity and culture, for sure. And SF is so physically beautiful. It must be the most beautiful city in the US.

Jere said...

I went to Cleveland and didn't even think of going to the HoF. Then somebody told me it actually is cool. I don't know what to believe. Shouldn't Castig be talking about the Motown HoF?

Jere said...

L: Have you been to Seattle? Just curious.

laura k said...

R&R HoF is disgusting. Anyone who loves R&R should detest it.

I'm glad I went, just so I could see it for myself. Horrible.

Zenslinger said...

Seattle has the Science Fiction Hall of Fame. That was not bad.

Seattle's a bit San Francisco-y.

I'll check back in in a bit.

laura k said...

Jere, I've been to Seattle twice (once Kingdome, once Safeco). Have you been there?

allan said...

anyone who likes rock and roll should avoid the HoF like the plague. it is horrible. way too much of it is wax dummies wearing famous musicians' stage clothes. you will not learn anything. blah.

and you cannot leave the building without going thru the gift shop.

Jere said...

Are you kidding me? Yanks dude swings at a pitch out and gets a base hit. Mohler? Some Yankee I've never seem before or heard of.

laura k said...

"A bit SF-y" is a good way to describe Seattle.

It's very pretty, on the water, with mountains visible on two sides. And it's a nice town, fun stuff, good counterculture.

I was disappointed b/c at the time Seattle was being hyped out of control. It was supposed to be the hottest, the hippest, the coolest... and of course it was not. Hype kills everything.

But leaving the hype aside, it was nice.

Big out lesbian population, which says a lot about a town to me.

Jere said...

Went to Seattle for a week, and passed through when my band was on tour. I loved it. If I lived on the west coast, that's where I would live.

Jere said...

Oh, Chad Moeller. A catcher who I assume can throw the ball.

Jere said...

Orsillo thought 3 outs...ha

Jere said...

yanks up 5-1

laura k said...

Jere, that's cool, re Seattle. Would you ever move to the west coast, do you think?

In Canada, everyone tells us how great Vancouver is. Vancouverites rave about it.

Jere said...

yanks up 7-1

Jere said...

I used to think I'd "end up" in Seattle. We'll see. Meaning, like, when I'm much older. Who the hell knows...

laura k said...

Oh right, who knows. Like I ever, ever dreamed I'd live in Canada. Life is full of surprises, that's the beauty of it.

allan said...

Mudcat Grant honored by Clev tonight - and in the booth.

Talking about various things, including how happy he was when hotels allwoed black players to stay with their white teammates.

That's not a direct quote, you kind of had to know what he was saying to get it, but still, every so often, someone says stuff like that, and it surprises you that this shit went on only a few decades ago.

s1c said...

Must be getting a cold wind off of the lake. I thought that ball was going to go further than that.

Seattle, nice place to visit but I liked Portland better.

Vancouver is nice, spent a couple of weeks there while in the navy.

laura k said...

Our niece was living in Portland, I was hoping to visit... but now she's in Berkeley. It sounded really nice.

When we were in Oregon, we were on the coast the whole time. It's spectacular. No commercial development - all state park land - the entire coast. Amazing.

Jere said...

Yeah Oregon seems like a cool place. Only briefly saw Portland.

Jere said...

Oh! I thought Tek a had a D.

laura k said...

Oregon is strange, though. It's the whitest state in the country - 98% white. Very progressive in some ways... and also the home of the redneck militias.

allan said...

Hi, Laura, yeah I see some comments here and there about Seattle? Never been there, but I also see some SF comments. I love SF, though only been there once, exactly 5 years ago. Our one trip out west, did the CA coast from SF to LA. Wonderful trip.

I am hoping if I don't watch, Lester will continue striking out people.

Also, I was there Friday night and heard not one boo aimed at Papi. Not even aimed at Timlin, though he sure deserved it.

laura k said...

Amy, that's such a beautiful drive. Some of the most beautiful coastline anywhere.

laura k said...

Amy, don't take it personally.

Jere said...

He couldn't have nabbed either of those balls?

allan said...

shit - looks like sid was starting to pitch -- then it gets thru under his glove. fook.

Jere said...

Amy, I think the turbulence is being caused by your inconsistent movements. Make a choice and stick with it:)

Zenslinger said...

It's been 1-0 on Garko for a while now according to the online GameChannel, etc.

Amy said...

OK, I will watch since even when I didn't, he gave up a hit.

That drive was gorgeous. We stopped at a number of amazing state parks, saw all the elephant seals and regular seals, etc. We did Sonoma, Carmel, etc. We even liked LA.

Jere said...

Garko singled up middle. 2-1 them. Now 2-2 on Gut. Broken bat pop out to Casey to end inning

Let me enjoy your pizza vicariously.

laura k said...

Do we get pizza up here? Uh, yeah, there is pizza in Canada.

I've never been away from NY style pizza. There is a pizza place that has several locations here called Joe's New York Pizza. And yes, it's authentic.

Interesting thing is the city where my grandfather used to live down in Florida has a Joe's New York Pizza. Different place, though. Good pizza there, too.

Rob said...

Canadians live in igloos and always wear parkas.

You mean they don't?!!
