I would love to see Lester follow Dice's example of pitching aggressively and economically to the Tigers.

Pudge leading off?
You might think that Leyland is mixing up the batting order to get some sparks going. But the rest of his order is the same and Pudge led off on April 6 -- the game before the Tigers arrived in Boston.
I-Rod has not yet walked this season (.148 OBP). Last season, his OBP was .292.
Leyland has ledoff with Pudge in two of Detroit's last three games! ... What a genius.
I fear the Royals
2008 ALCS: Orioles/Royals?
In MFY news, they have brought up the former Attorney General Alberto Gonzalez to play SS (he's starting tonight).
In MFY news, they have brought up the former Attorney General Alberto Gonzalez to play SS (he's starting tonight).
Bill Lee was right. They really are fascists.
NESN!
...continuing on from last thread. If Amy appears tonight: The Turning Point Inn is still there...no idea if it's the same owners (probably not).
Happy game, all!
Hi all. Trying again to stay quiet tonight. Unlike our bats, which should be very noisy.
gemweb!
Dr and Youk combine for a dandy!
no walks, houdini! pls!
Ish - If we have Uncle Joe and Brother Dave for our Radio announcers, what should Dale Arnold be called?
I wish I had one of those screens that's split into four individual screans. Busy evening with interesting sports matches. Sox, Mets/Phillies on ESPN2, Celtics, and some playoff hockey.
But you know where the priority lies.
Good question, s1c. He sounds like he should be the distant cousin.
Youk presented FY with his ROY trophy before the game today.
cousin fits, since he primarily will be doing wednesday nights (brother dave does the ESPN broadcast on Wednesday). That pitch was pretty nasty.
Wow, that's cool.
Baseball America calls Bonderman's slider, a "deluxe slider." Sounds like something you'd get at White Castle, not in the batter's box.
And not necessarily over the plate.
I'm working on a paper tonight (anyone care to offer some opinions on the consequences of the US's "containment" policy during the cold war?) but I'll be checking in from time to time. Go Sox.
Containment, eh? I guess you don't have time to read a bunch of Graham Greene novels.
Bonderman is making Lester look like a control artist.
No Graham Greene for me, but he does seem interesting and I'm 90% sure there is a class about him.
yuck, the worst kind of double play
He's a great writer. His books are those rarities that are both page-turning and exciting like a cheap spy novel, but incredibly nuanced at the same time. Terrific for human motivation and political intrigue.
For containment, "The Quiet American" is about the beginning of US involvement in Vietnam, in 1957.
OK, back to modding, bye.
Drew you need to dive buddy. That's ok you will hit a home run today.
Thanks for the tip, I'll add it to my queue of books to read over the summer. :)
I thought the same think. "O'Neill plays it on a hop..."
Sorry about the frame of reference there.
The Human Factor is another good one. On the surface, a spy novel, but much more. About apartheid.
I can't shut up about books.
leadoff guy, 2nd inning, no need to dive. i don't wanna drew to hurt himself and douse his fiery bat.
Hit him right below the neck.
if im not mistaken youk caught that with his goat
Renteria of the Pujols.
Sean Casey is batting for the Doc. So, it looks like Dr. needs a Dr.
casey PH for lowell.
prob yook at 3b, casey to 1b
what the holy hell. no way not the Doctor. well that works.
Orsillo is on fire
Big chance boys
Thanks for not being E-less anymore!
Bases loaded for LBJ!!
tek got lucky, hacking at the first pitch after a 4 pitch walk.
let's go lyndon.
What happened to Lowell? Youk gets hit so they move him to 3rd? Sorry, I've been a bit distracted.
1-0
Ellsbury has a good eye, doesn't he? Another one of those things I've noticed about him since last year.
That's my (walking) boy!
I'll take it, but I've never liked walk-in runs....I know, I know it's a part of the game.
3 walks so far...here's to control
lowell might have tweaked something on that first play of the game. backhand grounder and a throw from one knee.
Oh man, I love walked-in runs. Free money.
Tigers fans must be pulling their hair out.
Sluggo!!!!!!
That was a pretty hit by Hooleeo
RBI for Lugie!
replay of that lowell play shows him shaking his left wrist after the throw.
just saw the Lowell replay. Shaking the left wrist. I was just surprised to see this happen after being out there 2 innings. I guess swinging the bat'd be no good for that.
Go Lugo!
The hand (or thumb) may have stiffened or swelled up on him.
fuck no.
grrrr just let him off the hook. okay 2 ain't bad
Is Varitek clogging the bases? I'm imagining LBJ running slowly to compensate for him, standing on second by the time Slugo's single was fielded.
swell.
I wish the doctor well.
2 in the bank. pobre tigritos
I just want to throw this out there , in case any of you are librarians: I love librarians
Is Varitek clogging the bases?
Dusty, is that you?
It's so early in the season for Remy to be ragging on Don! Poor Don.
I also love librarians.
Librarians are awesome. They've been at the forefront on the battle for our civil liberties here in the states.
I used to work as a librarian. thought of it as a possible career. Hard to crank the music in the library, though.
That's right! (What Nick said.)
When I was a kid I wanted to be a librarian. What a geeky thing to dream about! I loved the idea of being around all those books, knowing where everything was, being able to look everything up. (Pre-Google.)
The Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities has this 'ask a librarian 24/7' service online, where librarians from the various schools will chat with you and help you with your research questions... a librarian from Loyola Chicago found me a snappy map indicating which countries were under communist control through the years, which is exactly what I was looking for.
I used to call the NY Public Library for stuff, too. An amazing service.
I remember when the librarian was a much older woman: Kindly, discreet, unattractive. We didn't know anything about her private life. We didn't want to know anything about her private life. She didn't have a private life.
Gary Sheffield is one of my least favourite players ever. I like to see him make outs.
I totally agree, Laura. There are many representations of librarians, but growing up I was always fascinated by the father in Something Wicked This Way Comes.
I still remember when Sheffield shoved that fan at fenway, and I still think it was Shef's fault.
yoooook
Still kind of looks like he made the stretch, but maybe I'm just not seeing it.
got truped on manny's nondong
CASEY!
casey is taking over this game!!
my wireless connex went out. i was trying to do yooook and casey. stupid internet.
enough with the walks, sid.
why can't we get players like that?
ump is fucking squeezing sid.
uh oh.
yes. rut row.
fuck
Oh, cock.
And the melt down is now complete.
lester set to throw his 478th pitch of the inning.....
Down by 2 with 6 innings to hit.
Got home just in time to see Tek hit the leadoff double.
So what happened to Lowell?
Alright Amy, good timing. I wish they'd show LBJ at the plate more than the chatting in the booth. (Even tho it's a good chat.)
My boy's a walking machine tonight.
LBJ on! Let's score these runs. No men LOB please.
he hurt his left wrist a bit on the first play of the game.
...
good lord, remy CANNOT read any promo of any kind!
I have to catch up here and see how the runs scored. I heard Lester's meltdown in the car on the way home.
Sure, blame it on Don. Remy can't read a single promo EVER.
ah geez. I hung w/ Emma bit before her bedtime and....!
C'mon Lamentable Lugo. He's bobbled twice today and now...almost a trippple play!
Luckily that wasn't Youk or Pedroia hitting that grounder.
Damn, erased those two. At least no triple play.
I love to see trippple plays, but not against us.
So Lugo managed to make all 3 outs after all.
shit, what a waste
What a waste of a leadoff double. I hate that.
Well that inning royally sucked bilge water.
So Lugo, sucking on defense, still sucking on offense.
Where is Orlando Cabrera?
OK, so I say that and then Lugo makes a great play. Figures.
Orlando Cabrera? Don't you mean Jed Lowrie?
lugo able to make the nice play without resorting to CI's patented jump and throw silliness.
Yay Lugo!
If I cheer for him enough, maybe he'll break through with a crazy season. maybe.
It's worth a try.
The Aardvark is warming.
No, I still miss Cabrera. You know how I am. I hate when players leave the team. I was sad to see Mirabelli yesterday, even though he produced nothing last year.
I was kidding, but man, you seriously miss Cabrera?
So how do you end up getting attached to new players, who you can later miss? Like, will you miss Lugo one day?
Brian Bruney started the MFY game in KC. Kennedy was scratched due to weather concerns. He was scratched 15 minutes before the start of the game. If they have a long rain delay, he could pitch after.
Joe Torre did that earlier this year.
"A full half. Hour of Red Sox games..."
Remy reads every promo like he's semi-literate. The end of every line. Is the end. Of the sentence.
We laugh at it all the time.
Amy, is there anyone you don't or won't miss?
Lugo! He did it. No E! Way to go!
Hmmm, will I miss Lugo? Not if he remains as much as a non-entity. I don't miss Renteria, for example. I don't miss Damon. I miss Pedro. I missed Nomar for a while, but not any more. I never missed Bellhorn, but miss Millar and Mueller. I miss Kapler, but not Foulke. No rhyme or reason. Like love---who can ever figure it out.
What can I say? I get attached easily, and I detach with difficulty. But there are lots of players that are very forgettable.
Maybe I should miss Renteria. Damn, another extra base hit.
I was about to ask you if you miss Renteria when he hit another double.
I understand it. I used to be the same way, or similar. Before I became ruthless. :)
Lester:
5.1 IP
5 H
4 R
4 BB
0 K
remy says "ardsmer"
royals and chokers 0-0 after 3.
ardsmer cranks up the last two fastballs to 94 and 95 to fan brandon and the angry inge.
Aardsmer---isn't that it's said?
(Just kidding, but it sounds almost right to me after living in MA since 1975.)
OK, we need to score some runs this time. No more kidding around. At least Lugo made the third out. And the first two.
I guess that was the inning before. Shit, I must be tired.
Leadoff single. Go, Manny!
I finally find out what happened to Lowell.
I guess that was the inning before.
The 5th went by pretty quick.
the mayor and onfire will come thru.
the mayor and onfire will come thru.
In the 8th or 9th, I mean.
Can Tek tie the game?
That would be fun. It's in the realm of possibility.
Not meant to be.
Who is the guy with Joe Castig? I just turned it on, and he is terrible! I can't take it. I hope Joe does the 7th.
Patrick, I wondered about that also when I was listening in the car on my way home. When Thames hit the HR, he made it sound like a regular flyball to left field. Who is he?
jeez, as soon as thames hit it, you knew it was gone.
maybe he's the anti-trupe. thinks nothing is a home run.
Dale Arnold is saying that CI will probably miss the weekend series.
That's a shame. When the Yankees lose, fans can blame it on that.
Rally Time:
Lyndon
Lugo
FY
Yook
etc....
2-0 Royals, in the bottom of the 5th
So is that Dale Arnold with Castiglione tonight?
Not that I've been here the whole time, but gotta run--it's radio time.
go LBJ!
Dale's speech is kind of blocky and slow. He seems a step behind. After another half inning, I don't think he's terrible, but I think I liked Glen Gefner better. Though I heard that a lot of people didn't like Glen.
So many people complained about Gefner so much. I only heard him a few times, but I liked him well enough. I really didn't like the Trupe/Castig combo, so to me it was a nice change.
I was hoping we would capitalize on Detroit's inferior bullpen, but this just seems like a losing game. My hopes are low.
And that happened!
SLUUUUUGO!
Lugo trying to redeem himself. I am ready for it.
Down two runs in the 7th? Your hopes should rise!
Was that John Mayer the singer on the "And that happened" video? Could he really know nothing about baseball? Or was he goofing?
of course it was a goof.
It was such a perfect mimic of a pbp announcer's rythmn and cadence. I thought it was great.
Shoot, that had hit all over it.
Two more innings to score two more runs. Not at all beyond the ability of this team.
corey in
It was hysterical. I figured it was a goof---the guy grew up here in New England---he couldn't be that ignorant about baseball. :)
So...forgot to tell you all we are going to the game at Fenway on Friday night. Another chance for Harvey and me to test our ability to watch a Sox/Yankee game in public together.
lips warming
Oh yeah, you said you were going on Friday (on wmtc), but I forgot it was Yankees game.
KC 3, NYY 0 (6th)
I am starting to wish Renteria was still on the team if only so he wasn't hitting against us.
Alright. In the 3 minutes it took me to get to the station they go down.
"And that happened" has already entered my lexicon. we'll see how long it lasts.
2 innings left. I've the utmost faith.
KC 4-0 as Farnsworthless and Kennedy not gittin' it done.
crap
I guess the Tigers might actually finally win a game.
nice work, corey. almost as good as his appearance in toronto.
I'm glad you guys are keeping the faith.
I'm waiting for tomorrow at this point.
Most likely that will be the last time we ever see Corey. Timlin probably will be activated after the game.
Well, I'm a lot less hopeful at 6-2 in the 8th than I was at 4-2 in the 7th.
shit, if we can't get 4 runs in 2 innings, we ain't playing in october.
bot 8th:
flo
manny
mayor
werd
And that's supposed to make me feel confident, huh?
We won the mothers day miracles after I stopped watching at the end of the 8th. I'm off to other things hoping my mere absence will be the difference.
Why is Casey the Mayor?
Patrick is sacrificing himself for the good of the team.
that's his nickname around MLB - he is apparently the friendliest and nicest guy on earth.
This is ugly. What is with the bullpen?
I hope you are right about Corey and about Timlin.
no no no -- you are supposed to hit batters with no one on base -- and sheffield up.
So not a JOS nickname. I have to make sure I remember which ones are recognizable outside of this mini-universe within Red Sox Nation.
Nice DP!
Sexy does the Job!!!!
that's a sexy DP.
Speaking of Sexy Lips, I loved how in the ring ceremony, the clip of Tavarez showed him pointing to first base, directing the throw. Nice touch.
Well, that was a lucky break, let's see what we c an do.
I didn't see that clip or any other clips during the ring ceremony---just each player walking across to get their ring. Where did you see clips?
I did see Tavarez sort of dancing out while striding across to get his ring.
At least Ortiz is making him work hard. Now just hit it!
Ugh.
Papi is 1 for 19? Yikes.
we watched mlbtv on the computer - i assume it was on the scoreboard at fenway or nesn -- little in-game highlights for each player.
Cheap hit there for Manny, but at least it's a hit.
NESN did not show those clips. Oh well.
Not looking to likely with bottom of batting order coming up and four runs down.
But at least the Yankees are trailing....I assume still?
Wow, that sucks. We assumed everyone saw them. It was really nice.
KC 4-0 bot 7th
gonna be a fun 9th -- better not leave.
I'm not leaving. Here til the fat lady sings.
But not feeling optimistic.
But then again, it's only game 9.
Nice stop by Lopez.
I guess MLBtv had a different camera angle. We also couldn't hear or see the players' names announced. But Nesn flashed it on the screen (not that I needed them to, except for Royce Clayton, who I would not have recognized at all).
Why wasn't Mirabelli wearing a Sox jersy? Clayton was, as were Daubach, McCarty and the other 2004 player whose name I am forgetting.
Shit, I think that definitely seals it. But I will still hang in here til the 54th out of the game.
i suppose i agree.
It was Leskanic.
Boo on this game. Better game tomorrow.
a pen arm is getting cut on friday.
lopez is not doing himself any favors, though tito does love his loogy.
we can totally get 5 runs off todd jones.
last chance for the mfy. down 4-0 in the top 9th.
and so it begins ....
One left to go. Tomorrow will be better.
Leskanic, that's right
Apparently, not one I have missed!
Two on, two out. Arggh.
cora 3-3 , still on pace for a 1.000 average
Classic example of how walks slow down a game, MFY's started 1 hour later but may end before this game.
Bases loaded! Wish there weren't two outs. YOUK---keep us alive.
