G17: Red Sox 7, Yankees 5

Red Sox - 014 020 000 - 7 13 0
Yankees - 000 030 002 - 5 8 1
Josh goes 8!! 8-6-3-1-5, 105.

Manny hit home runs in each of his first two plate appearances (and scored three runs). Youkilis, Pedroia, Drew and Varitek each had two hits.

Moose Being Moose: 3-7-5-0-1, 77.

***

Josh Beckett (6.35, 70 ERA+) / Mike Mussina (4.15, 101 ERA+)

Dear Josh: Please give us more than 5 innings. If you gave us 7, you'd be the first starter to do so this season. We would like that.

Wait, have we really not had a starter go to the 7th, or was that an exaggeration?

Wow...

Jack Marshall said...

It's not all in Josh's hands, however. 1)It would be nice if the Sox got an umpire who wasn't squeezing the strike zone, adding to pitch count. Wake and Buchholtz were really victimized that last two nights. 2)A solid lead would help, given Tito's proclivity to bale on his starters in close games 3)The 6th seems to be the point where Francona takes pitchers out when he doesn't have to. How often have you seen a Francona starter end with a couple of strikeouts and still be yanked? In the old days, that literally never happened, and there's no reason why it has to in 2007.

Amy said...

My thoughts exactly. Imagine what it would be like NOT to have to see either Tavarez or Timlin or Lopez tonight....

Yeah, as much as this contradicts my old attitude...I think he should sometimes leave the starters in a bit longer than he has recently. The bullpen's going to be gassed by July if this keeps up.

Rob...they've made it through 6.67 innings, but never got the third out in the seventh.

How about 8 innings, huh, Beckett? That would be SO sweet.

allan said...

I was more aware of Sox getting squeezed, but I do recall that we got some gifts last night.

allan said...

I can't remember thinking that Tito has had a quick hook with the starters this year.

I have noticed that he seems to not let a reliver flounder out there quite as much. A slightly quicker hook than in the past.

Patrick said...

Jack, I disagree. On the third point, that is. From what I've seen, Tito's pull of the starters usually has to do with the pitch count and who is coming up. I've been getting a little upset at how long he can leave Dice-K in for.

This team is playing deep into October and I want all of my starters fresh and pumped for the occasion.

Jesus , how does Tito get any blame for the starting pitching/ his starters hve walked 53 in 86 innings....Thats ridiculous....wheter or not they are getting squeezed .....There is not a team in baseball who has walked more guys than the Red Sox... The way the staters have pitched we are lucky to be 9-7.....

Jack Marshall said...

Redsock---don't you think Francona has a tendency not to let his starter get that 3rd out? And he's been burned by the relief a couple times already in those situations. I count 25% of the games with the starter going 6.2 innings.

Jack Marshall said...

Regarding being squeezed---the ump was squeezing both sides, no question. But I don't know if I can remember a game in which one missed strike call led to more carnage than last night. Tek and Buchholtz had set up Moeller perfectly, the pitch was strike three, 3rd out, exactly where Tek's glove was, and when it was mis-called and Chad got his cheap bloop, the wheels came off. I know, it's part of the game; it happens. But it changed the whole game.

Jack Marshall said...

Good point, 9Casey. This is partly the result of losing Schilling, who walked nobody, of course. And Wake is a special case. But facts are facts...

Patrick said...

I'm expecting similar run production as last night for us, as we have just seen the moose, and he doesn't have the ridiculous stuff that Beckett has.

Adversely, Beckett might not go seven because the Yanks just saw him last week, and will be better off.

I'm guessing 5-3 sox, with a J.D. Dong.

Patrick said...

When are we posting JoS oatmeal?

tim said...

when DOESNT the moose get lit up.

i'm looking for double-digits from our boys tonight!

s1c said...

I think everybody is forgetting that the Sox lost over a week of spring training due to the Japan trip. That is huge because it is usually the last 2 starts in spring training that they get the starters up to the 100 pitch range (stretched out as Tito would say). Except for Daisuke, Tito has been pulling the guys at the 95-100 pitch range. This will work out in the end, as long as the starters start to throw strikes.

Ish/tim/and other bruins - I have a post up for you if you want to talk Bruins.

s1c said...

Put Dale Arnold in the Tappen side of the ledger.

Michael Holley: When I say NESN what do you think of?

Dale Arnold: Kathryn Tappen

MH: C'mon, be serious

SoSock said...

I wrote last night (I think) that that the innings will go up as the season goes on, weather gets warmer, and arms get stretched out.
S1c makes an excellent point also about the shortened spring training due to the trip. That is undoubtedly affecting the length of starts, but should work itself out soon. There is that pesky little fact, though, that throwing more strikes would lessen the pitch count and allow you to go deeper into the game.
Effective effeciency. Something we haven't been too good at so far.

SoSock said...

Wouldn't you know?
The only night I don't have a LL commitment this week (putting me home about 9:30 or 10), and my granddaughter has a 7:00 softball game.
Not complaining, tho. With all the time spent with my team, I rarely get to see hers, so I'm up for it.
Go Lady Cyclones!
Hope I come home to find the Sox in control, and all smiles on JoS.

laura k said...

Devine is back! Nice to see you. (Or it was, he's probably gone now.)

Hi all. We have YES. Allan is complaining.

Allan, do you know if it's possible to upgrade to MLB.tv Premium after buying the basic? I'm finally going to do it. For the sake of my bar tab if nothing else.

s1c said...

Amy don't jinx it!!!

Amy said...

Yes!

allan said...

al lieter and john flaherty on YES -- actually quite good. if only kay had called in sick. or would stfu.

Amy said...

Allan, I see your list of how far the starters have gotten this season. Any sense of how that compares to last year? I wonder whether this is just typical April cold weather starts or the effects of the Japan trip or just a bad series of weak starts.

allan said...

zen: i went with basic because i use it only at work on the weekend. and now i may be able to bring in my laptop and get the games (after not having video last weekend). so i don't think upgrading gives me anything extra.

amy: i could look this weekend.

Zenslinger said...

RS: Right. But do you know if it's possible. That is, I want to get Basic and be able to upgrade if I need the extra quality.

Amy said...

Mussina's a bigot? I didn't know that. Arrogant, yes, but a bigot?

allan said...

Glossary, Amy, Glossary!!

Amy said...

OK, checking out the glossary.

Jake of All Trades said...

I can tell the quality difference in MLB.tv premium when I hook my laptop up to the tv and go fullscreen, but not when I just watch on the computer.

s1c said...

Looked up the numbers for the Sox last april. In 5 starts last year for Curt and Daisuke they threw 33 inning, followed by Beckett 32.2, and Wake at 31.1. Tavarez was the only starter last year to average less than 6 (4 starts 19 innings).

Tek!!!

Amy said...

Jason!

RS, ummm, what in the glossary? I see nothing under bigot or Mussina.

allan said...

kay is wrong - bonds BBI with bases loaded only one time.

as far as we know, it has happened only 3 times ever.

allan said...

RS, ummm, what in the glossary? I see nothing under bigot or Mussina.

really?

Amy said...

Interesting, S1C, thanks for the stats. But did anyone get 7 or more innings?

Amy said...

I see it. Bronx bigot. How was I to know that? :)

allan said...

Amy: It's under Bronx Bigot.

s1c said...

Yes, they did! Daisuke for one (Mariner game that he lost when King Felix shut out the Sox). Just off the top of my head.

Yes, and base stealing isn't generally something the Sox have done all that well (Dave Roberts notwithstanding).

laura k said...

s1c, I just saw your comment on the blog that was quoting me re Dalai Lama. Thanks for that! I was reading the comment, thinking, what a nice thing for someone to say...then I saw it was you. Thanks for that, my friend.

even worse, moose taken deep by a black man. his klan buddies will not be pleased.

s1c said...

s1c, really, i am honoured. how did you get over there? is that a blog you read?

s1c said...

MBM probably saying "i'd hit these bombs off you, too, you know."

Amy said...

What blog are you talking about, Laura?

s1c said...

L-girl, I usually check on that blog once a week. Unlike WMTC which is daily!

Amy said...

Tek, no swinging at the high stuff.

allan said...

fuck you blue

Amy said...

HIT!! Good job!

laura k said...

s1c, cool. :)

Amy, I saw a URL in my Statcounter, lots of people coming to wmtc from one place. When I went there, it was a negative comment about a post of mine. I asked a follow-up question... when I went back to see if the blogger had responded, I saw a post from s1c in my defence! I was very surprised. (And pleased.)

As it turns out, the blogger is someone banned from my blog for pro-war sentiments and general obnoxiousness. Had I known...

TEK!!!!

...it was him, I wouldn't have responded at all. I'll give you a link in a min.

allan said...

40 pitches for moose this inning - so far

laura k said...

Here it is.

I was wondering what his problem was. But like I said, if I had read more carefully, I would have realized it was just a wingnut with a vendetta.

Zenslinger said...

77 pitches for him in 3.

I've got audio...don't have time to fool with the video at work today.

Will catch the end in the bar. Hang in there, Josh!

So redsock---still diaagree with me that Moose won't last the season with the Yankees? (Michael Kay began the 'cast saying that Mussina had "reinvented himself." Right: as a batting practice pitcher!)

Benjamin said...

In fairness, Mussina's pitched a whole 'nother half inning.

s1c said...

Actually L-girl, that blog now has multiple posters. Daimian expeanded it due to his pending marriage, etc.

Is anyone warming up inte MFY pen yet?

allan said...

right now, yeah, i disagree. they don't have many other choice. maybe they make a move in july, but for now ... i think he'll be "good enough" - league average

Benjamin said...

Mussina barely lasted through last season, but it's not like the MFYs have alternatives.

laura k said...

s1c, is it a popular blog?

s1c said...

jesus, I swear if I ever meet the guy who invented mal ware trojans I am going to go postal on him.

s1c said...

l-girl, not as popular as it was. It used to be fairly good, but ever since he added the marks its fallen off.

Amy said...

Thanks for filling me in, Laura. I looked it over. Not sure what that guy's point was, but I thought you and S1C responded well and effectively.

laura k said...

s1c, funny coincidence, you reading that blog, and mark from ottawa can't stand me, often slagging me when he can think of an excuse. big internet, but sometimes it seems like a small town.

Amy said...

I love when Damon makes the third out. Or any out.

laura k said...

The MFYs picked up Santana in the off-season after all.

Redsock - The question for the Remdawg today was: "Are you more worried about Timlin or Papi?"

Do the words WHITE FLAG mean anything to them?

Then again, we're not worried about Timlin. We expect him to suck, and he does.

Amy LOL, very good.

Patrick said...

WHAT? A 0 run inning? Trade Dustin!

Amy said...

Why worry about Papi? He will hit more, and he has already started.

Timlin can lose games for us. The worst Papi can do is not help win them, but he can't cost us a game.
