G54: Red Sox 5, Mariners 3

Red Sox - 000 100 040 - 5 9 1
Mariners - 000 001 002 - 3 8 0
Hell of a pitchers duel for seven innings. Both Colon and Hernandez worked quickly and threw few pitches. The game was 1:29 old at the seventh inning stretch.

David Ortiz homered to dead center in the fourth to put Boston on the board. Seattle tied it in the sixth: Ichiro Suzuki singled, Jose Lopez was hit by a pitch, Jose Vidro bunted the two runners over and Ichiro scored on a grounder to second from Raul Ibanez.

The Red Sox broke through against Felix in the eighth: Sean Casey singled, Julio Lugo forced him at second, Jacoby Ellsbury grounded to second, Dustin Pedroia doubled to deep left (2-1), Ortiz was walked intentionally, Manny Ramirez singled over Jeremy Reed's head in right field (3-1), Mike Lowell singled (4-1), J.D. Drew dropped a bunt down that died on the third base grass, Jason Varitek walked (5-1) -- and then Hernandez was pulled.

Colon: 7-5-1-1-4, 84.

***

Bartolo Colon (3.60, 120 ERA+) / Felix Hernandez (3.34, 118 ERA+)

RIP: Former Red Sox pitcher Geremi Gonzalez, 33, "died on Sunday after apparently being struck by lightning in Punta Palma, Zulia, Venezuela". Gonzalez pitched in 28 games for the 2005 Red Sox.
Afternoon: Orioles 6, Yankees 1
7 PM: Rangers at Rays

Joe Grav said...

The Good Doctor issues half a prescription, which turns out to be enough.

Jere said...

If he throws to first RIGHT NOW he still might get Lowell.

allan said...

flo scoots home!!!

Patrick said...

Perhaps Seattle needs to hear a story:

Once apon a time, a closer with the alias, K-Rod, pitched around Ortiz to get to Manny...

Rob said...

Oh boy. I love this inning!

Jere said...

sock--just for scorecard notation purposes--that was a full swing by Drew on the slow roller.

The CaBBtain! Or whatever.

nick said...

Hernandez has a particularly pouty way of stalking around the mound. Did you see him after the roller up the 3rd base line?

Joe Grav said...

Man, I really want to visit Amsterdam. Damn you, effective advertisements.

Well, sort of. I don't particularly desire to drink Amstel Light.

Patrick said...

Way to stay on top of things, Mclaren.

Sarah Haendler said...

grilled salmon and steamed spinach.

And oatmeal to start out with - we eat pretty well here at Joy Nation.

andy said...

I am finally home.
Nice to see they figured it all out AFTER they left me in Oakland. We almost flew up to Seattle too. A couple different drunk guys tried to start a fight with me because their team had just won the world series this weekend. When we got back into SF off the train there was an announcement for Jason Varitek to catch is ride on 4th St. At that point it was mostly Red Sox fans getting back to their hotels so it drew a big laugh. The train booth guy had no idea what he was saying.

Joe Grav said...

keep it going

Rob said...

Hernandez has a particularly pouty way of stalking around the mound. Did you see him after the roller up the 3rd base line?

Kinda like Cano and The Dud.

Grant Salzano said...

Wow, looking at gametracker... I didn't even realize how good of an at bat tek had

Joe Grav said...

bases full of Red Sox

Jere said...

Ryan Rowland-Smith in, Eddie Jim-Jensen warming. (WCBS-TV channel 2 news New York joke that no one ever gets--but I'm gonna keep doing it. For as long as this guy's playing.)

SEA TV:
"hernandez was great for 7 innings. things may have gotten a little away from him in the 8th"

YA THINK?????

Joe Grav said...

bronx cheer

Grant Salzano said...

Japelbon to Papelbon?

Sarah Haendler said...

Hey Andy. We were just lamenting the lack of your presence.

Patrick said...

Japelbon!

LOL

Grant Salzano said...

Joe and I coined the term :D

Sarah Haendler said...

Why in the world are they advertizing for a day at the races that happened... earlier today?

Patrick said...

Who would you have grill your salmon?

Rob said...

JeemerTime!

Grant Salzano said...

Due to our not bringing him in with baserunners on... I think it's safe to say Japelbon will do fine and Papelbon will pwn. Let's put this one to bed.

Patrick said...

Why in the world are they advertizing for a day at the races that happened... earlier today?

At least Gloria Estefan doesn't pollute my ears between innings from WRKO anymore.

allan said...

colon: 7-5-1-1-4

Grant Salzano said...

What 12 second rule?

Someone fill me in?

Rob said...

At least Gloria Estefan doesn't pollute my ears between innings from WRKO anymore.

YES!!!! I didn't even notice! Oh happy days.

Sarah Haendler said...

Masters of the understatement, those FSN guys.

Patrick said...

I still can't get over Colon. I mean, he was basically FREE! He came out of nowhere like an angel, and he is now gracing out rotation with supreme ass kickage. It's pretty alright.

Sarah Haendler said...

FSN obsessing over MBM hair.

Grant Salzano said...

I knew from the beginning that Colon signing was a brilliant one, it's just fantastic to see that we're actually getting something for our risk-free move.

Jere said...

I don't see Colon flying around in the clouds. Maybe more of a land-angel.

Patrick said...

I thought Rice-K was pretty clever, and not hurtful, but what do I know?

Rob said...

12 second rule is how long a pitcher has to throw the ball when there's nobody on. I've only seen it enforced once or twice. Penalty is an automatic ball.

Patrick said...

Maybe more of a land-angel.

kinda beached whaleish angel.

allan said...

Not keen on calling Jeemer "Jap"-anything.

Grant Salzano said...

Nice talking out there, boys.

Rob said...

Not keen on calling Jeemer "Jap"-anything.

Kinda reminds me of the nickname Man Ram for Manny. Not crazy bout that one myself. But to each their own.

Jere said...

Yeah but Man Ram isn't the same word as a racial slur. I think that's what he meant.

Joe Grav said...

Japelbon = Jeemer + Papelbon. What were YOU thinking? :-p

Sarah Haendler said...

kinda beached whaleish angel.

Nah, that is one perfectly happy, swimming around sort of whale.

Rob said...

12,000 people in attendance in Tampa to see the 1st place Rays tonight.

Grant Salzano said...

Woooooosh.

That was nice.

Joe Grav said...

allan said...

Having a hard time seeing the difference between Rice and Jap for Dice/Okajima and Watermelon and Fried Chicken for Ortiz/Manny.

Maybe someone could explain it to me.

Joe Grav said...

one yellow light and one blue light

Grant Salzano said...

I'd have said Japaneselbon, but it doesn't quite have the same ring :-P

Jere said...

Argh! My nemesis, that girl that can't sing.

Grant Salzano said...

I don't even think we need Bapelpwn at this point.

Well done, stunningly resurgent opportunistic offense.

Joe Grav said...

my friend spent like 45 minutes trying to come up with a fake game which the John Mayer commentary would have made perfect sense for

Sarah Haendler said...

And now we have a regular old buffet going...

I'd like some collards too, since we've added good southern fare.

Rob said...

But Jeemer and Bot are two totally different pitchers. Maybe I'd use a sort of hybrid nickname for Okajima (like Jeemerbon) if they were similar pitchers.

Patrick said...

I don't know what it is, but Okaji gives up a hit to the first guy he faces 8 times out of 10.

Can anyone look that up easily? It's got to be bad.

Sarah Haendler said...

Nipponbon?

Joe Grav said...

But Jimabon is the successful winning combo.

Rob said...

my friend spent like 45 minutes trying to come up with a fake game which the John Mayer commentary would have made perfect sense for

...Cricket?

Joe Grav said...

Person of Asiabon

Joe Grav said...

oh man. I'd love to see some "AND THAT HAPPENED!" commentary for cricket.

Rob said...

McClaren looked like he was thinking ha. Ellsbury almost broke his nuts.

LYNDON-WHEELS!

Joe Grav said...

hahah ellsbury

Jere said...

You can't teach speed like that. Unless you're employed at the Derek Jeter Institute of Stuff You Can't Teach.

Sarah Haendler said...

Good call, Ish. I can't make heads or tails of that game. Isn't Lord Lynch up by now?

Grant Salzano said...

Wow, what a play there.

Rob said...

WOW. That was unbelieveable!

Still no high-five though.

Joe Grav said...

Wow. What a fucking play that was.

We've seen some real gems - pedroia, ichiro, beltre

allan said...

first batter this year against jeemer (not including tonight):

6-for-17
with a BB and a sac

Jere said...

Wow that rally ended pretty fast.

Grant Salzano said...

Ballgame.

Patrick said...

yikes.....

Rob said...

Alright, chaps.

Ichiro catch vs. Beltre DP.

Who ya got?

Sarah Haendler said...

I'm not trying to dis on the Mariner's D, as it has been quite good, but these FSN guys are making too much of it.

Of course, they haven't got much else to make much of at this point.

Grant Salzano said...

I say Ichiro. It wasn't difficult to tap his glove on 3rd.

Patrick said...

6-for-17

not quite .800

Jere said...

Ichiro catch was better, I think. Beltre did make a great play, but he made it look more impressive by tripping over the bag. After he glove-tagged it, it seemed like he had his body under control. Yet he still stumbled getting up.

Sarah Haendler said...

I'm with Ichiro too, Beltre didn't even look like he might fall out of the park... and no high fives anywhere.

Jere said...

Okay, would you rather date the deaf or the blind?

Patrick said...

he made it look more impressive by tripping over the bag.

Is that another thing you can learn at the Derek Jeter Institute of Stuff You Can't Teach?

nick said...

In Beltre's defense (ha!), the throw to 1st after that was pretty swell.

Grant Salzano said...

Blind. My voice ain't half bad, but if she doesn't have to look at my face, I'm golden.

Rob said...

Is that another thing you can learn at the Derek Jeter Institute of Stuff You Can't Teach?

Third base department, headed by A-Rod.

Jere said...

Miguel Cairo is trying to ruin this whole evening simply by being on my screen. But I won't let him!

allan said...

So no one is stepping up to explain the nicknames ....

.... then stop using them.

Sarah Haendler said...

Is that another thing you can learn at the Derek Jeter Institute of Stuff You Can't Teach?

Anyone got a course catalog for that one?

Jere said...

that's a K

Grant Salzano said...

Calm down, Red Sock

Jere said...

Calm Eyes 101 is a pre-requisite

Joe Grav said...

Blind. My voice ain't half bad, but if she doesn't have to look at my face, I'm golden.

You might want to go with the deaf-and-blind

Rob said...

Anyone got a course catalog for that one?

Dancing at the Plate 101

allan said...

BOT back from 3-0 to K!

(yes these FSN guys are going nuts for the catches. also getting *very* excited on fly balls that ococ and drew caught shy of the track.)

SoSock said...

Not bad after a 3 - 0 start.
And he ain't fucking around, all fastballs

9casey said...

Grant Salzano said...
Calm down, Red Sock

show a little respect .asshole

Joe Grav said...

Anyway, I choose the deaf.

Jere said...

does grant know redsock is the one with the sceptor?

Sarah Haendler said...

In all fairness, Allan, I don't think anyone has used them since the failure of explaination.

allan said...

fuck you, grant

you don't agree -- go elsewhere

your choice.

9casey said...

I came up with that nickname by joining the words ass and hole

Rob said...

LAA - 000 000 000 00
CHW - 000 000 000 0

...so far.

Joe Grav said...

ahhhhh fuck

Grant Salzano said...

The Derek Jeter Institute of Stuff You Can't Teach Course Catalog:

DJ 101: Intro to General Overratednesss

DJ 115: Intro to Primadonnaship

DJ 208: Advanced Not Moving Over To Third Base For Someone Better Than You Because You Are Arrogant

DJ 850: Graduate Level Phantom-Tag-Making When Someone Playing At The Catcher's Position In The Playoffs

Rob said...

I see Papelbon has taken Jeter's Throwing 101 course, and must've scored an A.

Jere said...

Ouch. I was thinking as he was fielding it, I love how he's doing such a great job making sure to field the ball here....

Joe Grav said...

Where's the 'jackknifing out of the way of a pitch that's in the strike zone' class?

Sarah Haendler said...

does grant know redsock is the one with the sceptor?

I've been meaning to ask for a picture of that thing...

Joe Grav said...

uh oh

Grant Salzano said...

In all fairness, Allan, I don't think anyone has used them since the failure of explaination.

T'was all I meant. Sorry, Red Sock. That did seem overly assholy.

Rob said...

Where's the 'jackknifing out of the way of a pitch that's in the strike zone' class?

Dancing 101.

Joe Grav said...

you'll have to forgive Grant. he's from connecticut, and thus he does not speak english

Rob said...

Dancing is crucial.

Grant Salzano said...

Where's the 'jackknifing out of the way of a pitch that's in the strike zone' class?
Good Lord, you cannot teach that as well (badly?) as Jeter does it.

Jere said...

Seriously, how often do pitchers bobble the ball and not even get a throw off on that other play? And he sure-handedly picks it up...and throws it to the foul pole practically.

Sarah Haendler said...

Casey, brilliant nickname creation! I can't believe no one came up with that before. What was the inspiration for the addition of "hole"?

allan said...

sarah -- that's true, i was merely following up.

...

"calm down"? ... sheeeeet, you gotta know you won't win any points typing that.

Grant Salzano said...

you'll have to forgive Grant. he's from connecticut, and thus he does not speak english

Plus I'm a math major! Woo excuses!

Grant Salzano said...

Vintage Pap there.

Patrick said...

Sign me up for calm eyes 101, if it helps me get close to my deaf date.

Joe Grav said...

K

allan said...

Bot nabs the Yuni-unbomber

nick said...

for love of all that is (ass)holy.

I think using ass as a prefix just makes everythng better.

what an assgreat play...

please pass the asspepper...

the bot assstruck out betancourt...

Joe Grav said...

math majors don't know how to interact with the rest of society.

Jere said...

"he's from connecticut, and thus he does not speak english"

Hey, what the crap??? You're the ones that ... aw, forget it. Rotary-drivin &#$&%&$

Joe Grav said...

Ichiro does a number on Yankelbon's ERA

Patrick said...

I think using ass as a prefix just makes everythng better.

My sisters friends in college actually use that habitually and for anything at all.

Rob said...

"he's from connecticut, and thus he does not speak english"

I thought it was just Boston that had that problem.

Sarah Haendler said...

sarah -- that's true, i was merely following up.

Yeah, I saw that - I was actually typing right through the comment you were responding to, so I'd not seen it yet.

Joe Grav said...

irrelevant

Jere said...

You aren't graduating without passing "sell the call on stolen base attempts at second by holding the ball up with your glove really high and starting to run off the field 301."

Sarah Haendler said...

Pap, you need to drop out of that school, brother.

allan said...

bot/tek out of sorts.
