Sox Trade Crisp To KC For Ramon Ramirez

It's official: Crisp traded to Royals.

***

Rotoworld:
Sports Radio 810 WHB in Kansas City reports that the Red Sox have traded Coco Crisp to the Royals in exchange for Ramon Ramirez.

Former Royals outfielder Brian McRae broke the story, but we're still waiting to see the move confirmed by other sources. Ramirez had an excellent rookie year for the Rockies in 2006 before struggling in 2007, but bounced back following a trade to the Royals last season, posting a 2.64 ERA and 70/31 K/BB ratio in 71.2 innings.

Ramon Ramirez could take Timlin's roster spot. Interesting move.

Cafardo has jumped on board. Herald has jumped on board.

Done deal. Announcement at noon.

Is that all we could get for Coco? I mean don't get me wrong, a middle reliever to replace "Blown Leads" Timlin is good, and Ramirez looks like a pretty good pickup, but it seems to me the Sox aren't getting as much as they could get for Crisp.

Why does this make me sad? At the beginning of the season, I saw no reason to keep Coco, and I still don't. But he did contribute quite a bit at the end when LBJ was doing nothing. I wish him the best in KC.

Why does this make me sad?

Because when any player leaves the team, unless you absolutely hated him (and maybe not even then), you feel sad.

Is that "you" intended to mean just me or any fan? I know I am a sentimental fool!

Gammons wrote this on Monday: "One of Boston's priorities is to get young, and don't be surprised if the Red Sox move Coco Crisp for a reliever to allow Justin Masterson to start."

2008 O-Swing% (pitches outside the zone that hitters swung at, relievers min 50 IP)

Rivera - 36.3%
Papelbon - 34.3%
Ramon Ramirez - 33.3%

Not bad!

RH hit only .153/.244/.212 against him last year!

Just you! :)

In my eyes we got a possible high leverage reliever for essentially the teams 4th outfielder.

Don't get me wrong I like Coco and he had a solid season last year but it was unreasonable to expect much more of a return.

Good deal IMO.

Adios, Coco! You had your moments and we wish you luck down the road (against anyone but us).

With Ellsbury running hot and cold and Drew needing days off, we do need a solid 4th outfielder, though. I wonder how the team's interest in Baldelli plays into this -- or keeping Kotsay. Van Every won't cut it.

Coco had a good year, but the Sox seemed overloaded in the outfield and short in the bullpen. The trade makes sense. I feel sorry for Coco going to a bad team. He deserves better.

Don't feel bad, Amy, I'm heartbroken. But you all know about my sometimes irrational devotion to Ococ

And to Kansas City. Poor guy.

This will guarantee the Red Sox will make another move because you're right. Van Every won't cut it and they know it. They've got Kotsay and they can dazzle Baldelli with an offer to get him here. Rocco Baldelli is in a position to be the best among major league fourth outfielders. I think the Red Sox will go after him hard.

I wouldn't be surprised to see a return of Gabe Kapler if they can't or don't want to sign Baldelli.

As a fan of Coco I hope the Royals flip him to another team. I don't see that happening but for a veteran, proven player like Coco who could be any team's starting CF, it's a kick to the nuts to be traded to KC at this point in that franchise's history.

Sarah, I am glad to know I am not the only sentimental one around here.

For the record, I would not be sad to see Lugo go. Nor was I sad when Renteria left, or Mark Bellhorn, or Alan Embree, etc. Now I didn't hate them; I just did not care.

On the other hand, I was glad to see Eric Gagne leave and David Wells.

Even I have my limits!

Most likely a good move, logical at the least. I, too, will miss oCoC/Funix/etc., if not just for the great nicknames.

If Ramirez doesn't quite add up to Coco in terms of value as a player, you have to remember he is cheaper. Coco's owed something like $5.5m next year. That's not particularly expensive for us, a high-payroll team. But $5m is still $5m!

I'm sad to see him go, too.

I like Ococ. After all, I gave him that nickname! I wish him all the best, but it's a good move, so I'm not sorry to see him go.

Red Sox need a new Stadium to compete with Yankees dollars. While we're at it, something has to be done about the Yankees getting Two aces in Sabathia and Burnett, if that happens, we are toast.

Is my well-documented inability to detect sarcasm online at work here?

Or are you insane?

I was wondering the same thing, Laura. Where DID this guy come from? Has he ever been to Fenway? I doubt it.

Dunno.
Pretty funny stuff, though.

This reaction seems about right.

If the MFY get CC and AJ -- fuck, why not give 'em Lowe too! -- they will still have their broke-down oldtimers lineup.

Their runs scored dropped from 968 in 2007 to 789 in 2008! They'll still struggle to repeat their 3rd place finish. Fortunately for them, the Jays and Birds totally suck.

It's never as dangerous as it sounds. CC, AJ, Lowe, Wang, JtC... Sure, that's a very good staff, but they can still be beaten. And this is the AL East. That's 38 games against the Red Sox and the Rays.

But I don't see the Yankees signing all three of them. I'd be very surprised. Even CC and AJ. Very surprised if that happens.

I hope that the new economy will cause yankees stadium to go half full most of the time due to the huge ticket prices.

My initial reaction to this deal was, that's all?!? I felt like we should've gotten more, but after that went away, I feel good about it. Good relievers are hard to get.

In a way we just got a fifth starter with Masterson. So maybe it wasn't getting a lot back, but it was a good move.

This will be a real telling winter in seeing what Theo does. He has a lot to juggle right now.

They're either going to have to cut ticket prices, do a ton of special discount days, or live with the half-empty stands.

A lot of people will once, to see the new place, but it's a very expensive novelty.

laura k said...

Make that "but it's a very expensive novelty for a third place team".
