L - Jacoby Ellsbury, CFTerry Francona spoke about his preferred lineup to start the season:
R - Dustin Pedroia, 2B
L - David Ortiz, DH
R - Kevin Youkilis, 1B
L - J.D. Drew, RF
R - Mike Lowell, 3B
R - Jason Bay, LF
I think having the left-handed hitter [fifth] is somewhat useful. For me, right now, J.D. is healthy, we have Mikey Lowell and Bay who we can hit sixth and seventh. In my opinion, neither one is a typical [No. 7] hitter, but somebody is going to have to. We'll figure it out. We have a chance for a pretty balanced, good lineup. What is a typical #7 hitter? ... I guess the only question now is whether Jason Varitek will hit 8th or 9th? Speaking of which, Varitek leads the team with 12 RBIs!
Sean McAdam, Herald:
Nick Green and Chris Carter have been told that they have made the Red Sox Opening Day roster, with the understanding that things could change if the Sox make a last minute deal or waiver claim. Is this a joke? Tito, on Lowell's recovery:
The only thing for me right now that he's lacking is some speed. ... There's only so much you can simulate in Spring Training. When the season starts and all of a sudden you're trying to go first to third and score ... we'll keep an eye on him.Monday pitching: Daisuke Matuszaka threw 75 pitches over five innings against Atlanta yesterday, allowing two hits and two runs (one earned). He walked three and struck out two. ... Tim Wakefield pitched in a minor league: 5 IP, 5 H (3 HR), 5 R, 94 pitches.
Clay Buchholz makes his final Grapefruit League start today against our hated divisional rivals -- the Rays (1 PM).

Tek is going to surpise this summer. I stand by my .340 OBA!
I'll stand by it too and gape in wonderment.
a bit off topic, but for those of you with iphones, MLB has released the 2009 app and there's some goodies there. What as $4.99 last year is now the "Lite" version. It's free and includes real time gameday (well, as real as GDGD is anyhow). Pretty sweet. If you buy the app for $9.99 you get gameday audio with the choice of which team's feed you want to listen to. I guess it's like the PC version, but it's in yr pocket (and $5 cheaper). OK, no more consumerism from me.
I had to change my pants after seeing that lineup.
J-Bay batting seventh?!?! With Lowrie and Tek 8th and 9th?!?
My god. I'm going to seizure I'm so excited.
I too got a bit excited in various parts when spying that lineup. I'm ready!
That's pretty much today's lineup too, with Lowell and Bay swapped.
Maybe we can get Canada's House of Commons to vote on a nonbinding resolution urging this lineup.
The thing about those non-binding resolutions... you gotta watch out for that non-binding part.
Thanks Benjamin :)
Rays up 1-0 after 3.
Rays announcer mentioned that Castig & co are there in the booth next to them, even though they're not calling the game today. Isn't that funny? Joe just goes and hangs out in there on days he doesn't work.
2-run dong by them off HH, 3-0 TB. Guy got on base on a ball Bay lost in the sun.
Now Drew makes somewhat of a misplay and another guy's on second. So, please note, one guy got a dong but the other two could have been easy outs.
But now another dong by Gabe Gross to dead center. 5-0. Runs scoring fast and fur.
Ellsbury double, Pedroia double. 5-1.
Papelbon's dad has been on with this announcer for a while--he's the director of the Ted Williams museum.
We're finally getting to Sonnanstine. One in, bases loaded. Now a deep sac fly, 5-2.
So funny hearing the son in the father's voice. 5-2 after 4.
2-run dong off Mastadon, 7-2.
What is the, The Day of the Two-Run Homer for Undistinguished Tampa Players?
Isn't that funny? Joe just goes and hangs out in there on days he doesn't work.
I've been down there. There ain't fuck all to do. So why not?
Why doesn't he just sit in a normal seat, though?
Varitek 3-r dong, 7-5.
Nice OTT 8th for Master of his Domainson.
Feel th' Varitek POWER.
Where can we find spring stats? I mean, if he has 15 RBI, what pace would that put him on for the regular season?
I'm going to Vegas this weekend. Wonder if one can find odds on a 100-RBI year for Jason.
Or does this just mean he's going to hit under .200?
Rays announcer says "the guy on deck is not David Ortiz, we'll tell you who it is when we find out..."
Then he goes, "I knew that guy looked familiar, it's Rocco Baldelli."
Rocco moves up the runner. Man on 3rd, bot 8th, down by 2.
Just go to the stats section of redsox.com and click 2009 Spring Training stats on the drop down.
He's at 1 RBI per game right now, but of course he's not playing full games.
So he should get a good 200 RBI this year.
Right, thanks.
1 HR every 10 at bats or so.
And a 1.130 OPS from Jed!
yeah! Nick Green 2-run triple!!!! Tied up in the 8th, 2 outs.
I hope Francona doesn't have a nickname for Kristopher Negron.
Red Sox lead! 8-7 on a run-scoring single by Chavez.
Yeah. Yeah! YEAH! Go go Nick Green!
I'm getting kind of excited!
Maybe I should get tickets to see the Sox @ the A's on April 13!
Goddam!
I love a comeback anytime. Especially when it's the underdog Sox against America's Hated AL champs.
And I appreciate the updates...the MLB Boxscore still doesn't reflect the runs in the eighth.
Ram-ram in for the ninth. Goes 3-2 on first hitter....long at bat....gets a groundout.
Ram-Ram Meulens gives up a hit, tying run on, 1 out, 9th.
Webber steals 2nd, even though ball beat him. Much booing on the call.
Walk. First and sec, one out. I can totally hear Carl Beane in the background.
Fly out to Nick Green, first and third, two out.
2 ER on 5 H and 3 BB for Joba today in 6.3 repeating innings.
Red Sox win!
That's a lot of stranded baserunners.
6.3 repeating innings
Hunh?
Joba won a lot this spring and had a decent 3.60 ERA, but his WHIP is around 1.4.
number of innings = six point three repeating
He only pitched five and a third, though.
Nick Green and Chris Carter have been told that they have made the Red Sox Opening Day roster, with the understanding that things could change if the Sox make a last minute deal or waiver claim.
"Waiver claim" = Gary Sheffield?

"Waiver claim" = Gary Sheffield?
Oh, please no.
I'll take my chances with Carter and Gumball, or someone else who (a) isn't a 'roid user, (b) did not admit he'd be willing to throw games, or (c) isn't an asshole.
Whoops. Five point three repeating.
If we got Shef, it would be funny to see if someone in the Monster Seats would have the guts to throw back his 500th home run ball.
