He gave up a home run on a 2-2 fastball to his first batter (David Mailman), but settled down after that. John Farrell said Penny felt strong, was aggressive, and experienced no pain. Over at the Sox Prospects discussion board, Cem21 charted pitches for Penny's first inning and posted:
Penny looked to be throwing pretty effortlessly and had good command of his fastball. His curveball had pretty good action and he dropped it in for a couple of strikes. More of an aggressive side session, but looked pretty successful in achieving the goal. Next step getting him into a game.Penny is expected to throw about 45 pitches in his next appearance on Wednesday. The Red Sox will need a fifth starter on April 12, four weeks from this Sunday.

Hey, someone just asked me this question, and I wasn't positive of the answer.
Any idea of the starting rotation?
I figured Beckett, Dice-K, Lester are locks, but then ...? Wakefield? Penny? and a No. 5 (Buchholz? Masterson?) I know Smoltz is supposedly out until late May at best.
David Mailman! Awesome.
Yeah, all indications are that Wakefield and Penny round out the rotation. Looks like HH is insurance if Penny isn't ready.
They might be thinking of using Masterson for 2-3 innings a pop (in shorter Penny starts to begin the year, perhaps?), but I'd be shocked if they took him out of the pen.
Kottaras catching.
Gardner walks on one billion pitches.
Remy's off the DL and back in the booth.
6-4-3 DP.

LBJ reaches second on a foul ball down the left field line.
I'd be taking mod off for the game, but I'm leaving soon to pick up L at the airport.
She's been in California since Monday seeing friends and family, relaxing and eating great food and drinking jugs of wine.
Me, I'm typing this in my basement -- all alone. :<(

Jugs of wine have their benefits.
Too bad, RS.
Any reason Lugo came out?

Allan, I don't think you successfully turned moderation off before you left.
Lowell dong off Wang. 1-1.
There goes Mike Lowell, eh.
E1 on Miranda.
Kottaras loads the bases on a loonie.
Chavez with an rbi balboa to left. 2-1 good guys.
Miranda's having a pretty shitty inning. 3-1 good guys.
Ochoa with a 2-rbi bolivar up the middle. 5-1 good guys.
Remy's giving Orsillo shit for having a tan in Florida, and Orsillo's giving Remy shit for missing three games ("tanking").
Papi dong to right. 7-1 good guys. Lowell's coming up for the second time this inning.
(Papi's first hit of spring training.)
Wang gets pulled.
Tomko in to pitch.
Lowell single on a short fly to center. Still 2 outs in the second.
Scheduled pitchers: Papelbon, Saito, Bard, Tazawa.
Drew K finally ends it.

Ransom triple. Miranda HBP. Nady double (takes third). 7-2 us.
Er, 7-3.
My goal tonight was to knock Wang out DURING an inning. Goal accomplished!
Too bad that wacky left fielder of ours threw the ball into the ground trying to throw home in the first! He probably didn't know there was a game going on, ha ha ha ha!
J-Rod K, so Tim finally records an out.
Kottaras is looking pretty good catching Wakefield so far tonight.
Molina bloop to center. 7-4 us.
Wake's coming out. They don't bother saying who's coming in before the commercial breaks in ST, maybe because there's less time pressure to make the change fast.
Vaquedano in for Wake.
Duncan K.
Berroa reaches on an Ochoa bobble.
Vaquedano nearly castrates Pena on an outside pitch that misses extremely far inside.
Pena BB. Bases loaded.
Gardner K swinging.

Oh look! A game thread!
Saito looked good.
Bard Ks Jackson on a 99mph fastball.
Remy corrects it to 98.
That other avatar was too intense for my liking...too early in the season. Time to lighten it up a bit.
Wow to the game thread! Can't thread tonight but looking forward to getting back into them for opening day! Also hope to have a TV by then!
This is only post 56. We had a game thread earlier that was close to 100. Pretty good for early March.

Yes, well.
Benjamin's dominated this.
NESN's gun still working out the kinks.
Tazawa just threw a 26 mph fastball.
I wonder what happened to Heidi's wrist... Maybe Tek knows.
I still can't get over Tazawa's delivery.
Curtis incredulous. Sit.
I read about the "Welcome Home" commercial on redsox.com today. I figured the fact that they mentioned it meant it was some kind of new, genius commercial. Instead it was just everyone saying "see you at home." (The awkward Werner voice-cracking chuckle was pretty funny though. And Lugo tried to win the SS role through cuteness by involving his kid in his part.)
I think the timing of Remy's absence suggests a contract dispute, not some mystery "infection." But that's just a theory.
"If I had to make a guess, I'd say Kei's not the hardest worker." -Remy
I hear Remy was faking his illness -- the doctor said he kept forgetting what side of his chest hurt.
Nice baserunning, Chavez.

Masterson is surprisingly articulate in it. He has a nice voice.
Given the starting lineups of batters, it should have been an embarrassment to lose this one. So, fine that we won, but...Wakefield. The uncertainty about him looms.
But, on the other hand, we beat up on Wang.
Of course it's only spring training. Means nothing at all. About anyone. Right?

I believe seeing Papi turn on one meant something..
Lugo blew out his knee??? How did that happen, hit the ball too hard?
"Masterson is surprisingly articulate in it. He has a nice voice."
His post-game interviews last year are what made him become my current favorite player--and why I'll be finding a pic I took of him last year to use as my '09 in-season Avatar. (By the way, that was me "calling it," everyone. Tim, I got my eye on you!)
Okay, here's the new me. I'll see how it goes. I've got till April 6th to finalize. Under the rules I've set for myself.
Tim, I got my eye on you!
Haha, I'm good with Kenny Powers!
"You're fuckin' out!"
