Marlins - 001 010 000 - 2 7 1Wakefield (6-6-2-1-4, 93) earned his 173rd win as a Red Sox pitcher. He needs only 20 more to surpass Cy Young and Roger Clemens and become the team's new all-time leader. If all goes well, it should come in the latter half of next season.
Red Sox - 011 600 00x - 8 13 0
David Ortiz, hitting in the #5 spot, clubbed his 5th home run of the season leading off the fourth inning. The Red Sox sent 11 men to the plate -- Volstad's sinker stopped sinking and the Boston hitters were bringing forks and knives to the plate to dine on his fastball -- and Ortiz also drove in the final run of that frame with an RBI single. He walked in the sixth and just missed a home run in his first at-bat, flying out to deep right-center in the second.
Dustin Pedroia and the bottom third of the lineup -- Jacoby Ellsbury, Nick Green and George Kottaras -- each had two hits. Ellsbury also stole two bases and scored twice. Green drove in three runs.
After Wakefield departed, Manny Delcarmen (P8, K, 1-3), Takashi Saito (4-3, 6-3, F8) and Daniel Bard (K, single, 5-3, P3) did the rest.
Bard took Hanley Ramirez apart to start the ninth, getting him to swing and miss a first pitch fastball. He threw a ball out of the zone, then dropped a curve at 85 for another swing and a miss before fanning him on a 98 heater.

I'm just beat up a little bit. My legs feel heavy. Tito, he always seems like he makes [the day off] the right time.MLB.com:
Volstad's last outing was the worst in his young career. For the first time in his career, he allowed six runs, 10 hits and did not strike out a batter. The 22-year-old was in trouble in almost every inning when he faced the Cardinals last Tuesday and struggled from the start, allowing a three-run homer in the top of the first. It's only 38 plate appearances, but David Ortiz has a nifty 1.001 OPS in June (.303/.395/.606), with three home runs and seven RBIs.

Confirmed: Smoltz's first start will be on Thursday, June 25, against the Nationals.
A friend of mine is going to Fenway for the first time tonight. Wave to her..maybe she'll see us.
Damn, I'd grown accustomed to 4pm games. Now I've gotta wait 2 more hours...
Smoltz next thursday, huh? So that's another start in Pawtucket, then a start on 6 days rest, right? And some more time to field offers for Penny (does anyone have any doubt he'll be dealt at this point?). Plus, the Nats are a good rival, as a step between AAA and MLB (:
Art Martone: "The New York Times, quoting "lawyers with knowledge of the drug-testing results" in 2003, said Sammy Sosa is among the players who tested positive for a performance-enhancing drug that year."
NYT
Papi Batting 5th!!! Woo, he's on the comeback trail!!!
Plus did you see this about Papi in the Wall Street Journal h/t Powerline.
Just saw your comments on Wake, those last 7 starts are actually killed by two bad outings, in 9 1/3 he gave up 13 runs and one so so outing where he went 6 and gave up 5 runs. The other 4 games he went 26 2/3 and gave up only 9 runs total (a 3.04 ERA). So overall he has had 8 quality starts out of 12 this year.
There is 3 shitty outings of out 5, if you say his last two have been alright. Only three runs in 6 IP each time, but 8 hits both times and 3 BB last start.
The only strong outing was the May 19 against the Jays. We need pre-May 13 Timmeh.
Its not only Callahan who wants to bury Dice K
All right, now that I'm officially aboard the Brad Penny bandwagon, here's my revised version regarding what the Sox should do with their pitching surplus once John Smoltz arrives: Put Daisuke Matsuzaka on the DL with any alleged injury that they can come up with. If he resists that, either bury him in the bullpen or work Smoltz in as a spot starter -- with those spots conveniently coming on days Dice-K is due to pitch. Actually, snark aside, I feel like the Sox will come up with a creative solution for this that doesn't involve a full six-man rotation (meaning Josh Beckett and Jon Lester will still pitch every fifth day), but one in which Smoltz, Penny, and Dice-K all get a decent share of work. How this can be done, I have no idea, but that's why they pay John Farrell the big bucks, right?
s1c, did you do that on purpose? Massive linkage! :)
I was trying to figure out whether that was S1C quoting the article, or his own comment on it until I went to the link itself.
Make Tito Apologize!
kiko calero
one of my favourite names. so musical! sounds like a singer, or a dancer.
NESN at Chez L-Sock.
hmmm, heidi says sox will go with 6 man rotation for a short period of time.
Nice K! Three pitches!
"Down by way of the K"
DRINK!
ump's gonna throw his back out!
Is that two Ks on six pitches? Or have I missed a pitch?
nope, 2 on 6.
gload's swings - LOL
No K, but only two pitches.
Great start.
Nice quick OTT to start the game.
L-girl - yes I did it on purpose, because it was part of Chad's free ten minutes 12 or something and I didn't want to frag it up.
(went to take a shower)
Make Tito Apologize! I couldn't believe gump when he did that, but I would love to see a repeat!!!
FFire.
and we were up by 7 or so the next night & he held back and the fuckin' marlins won 10-9.
fucking still annoys me.
...still annoys me.
Me also, I was ripping on him every time the Sox would get a big lead after that.
also 3b coach cubbage admitted to intentionally sending guys in from third to give the marlins outs. he felt sorry for them.
fuck mike cubbage.
No first inning apologies...
and we were up by 7 or so the next night & he held back and the fuckin' marlins won 10-9.
fucking still annoys me.
Huh, I've never heard that part of it. What does it mean, held back? Did he take out the regulars? Or something worse than that?
WEEI was full of idiot callers today wanting Hanley. Calls usually went along the line of why did they trade him.
Almost every 5 minutes one of the hosts would have to remind them that the Sox won in '07 and that the ALCS MVP and WS MVP came to the Sox in that trade.
K please?
i don't recall right now. it was a couple of months before jos began, but i was blogging every day at my pedro site. june 2003
Shit
c'mon Timmy
This inning is starting off as badly as the first one was good.
BBBSH, BBBB, B
The second is not turning out to be as nice as the first inning for Wake.
There we go, much needed dp there.
I use to beg Allan to stop complaining about Jimy. Then came Gump.
cool - DP.
Escape, Houdini!
Ah, the timely DP.
and suddenly, jimy seemed alright.
Never worried.
That works too.
Way to Wiggle Wake!
There's nothing in that link about the Marlins. Plenty of other complaints about Gump, though (:
I am not even going to ask what he thought about the former P coach taking over.
check july. the game was at the end of june. change the 0603 to 0703.
Nuts, Orsillo was truped there.
Oh boo, Papi trupe.
More game, less Alfeck, pls.
i was pro-kerrigan, actually.
1st pitch - belt high, inside, 92 mph 4-seamer according to GDGD.
I hope he at least hit it hard, cause that's should be right in his wheelhouse.
LBJ!
They're sorry, but their tentacles were unable to locate that page.
Weird.
i was pro-kerrigan, actually.
I was more like, he's not jimy
0703A?
tiz pitch seemed a hair inside
Green ...... money?
We can hope
SoSock, it was a little too much inside and he couldn't extend.
LBJ steals with those wheels.
Yes! Nice steal.
You cannot catch him!!
You can (almost) never catch him!
WHEELS!
Re Nick Green, make L apologize!
Actually I probably should stop saying wheels
Yeah, GREEN!!!
Yeah! Nice defense there, Fish.
HAHA! LBJ's wheels make a difference!
Seeing eye SOFT bouncer. That was Uggla-ly!
Green ......MONEY!
Green still > Lugo
s1c, we were out with a friend last night, talking about movies and tv shows, and he brought up Firefly/Serenity. Another person urging me to see the whole thing. I must do that.
Ellsbury scored on an infield single?!
As I was saying I should probably stop saying Wheels since it reminds me of "Meatballs"
Wait, LBJ scored from second on an infield single? Why didn't they just throw home?
I would watch the series (Firefly) first.
You all know what Tala looks like, right? Pure white? She just came to the door asking to be let in, and half of her is completely black! She looks like she's been working in a coal mine.
Error, SoSock and Ofer.
...Firefly/Serenity. Another person urging me to see the whole thing. I must do that.
I swear that b-fly breaks up boyfriends just so she can get a new one to convert to the firefly fan club.
Ofer the ball got by both middle infielders and died on the OF grass - LBJ scored before they could do anything about it.
Did you let her inside? How do you get her back to white again?!
Tarheels win today.
On to face Ariz.St. / Texas winner on Thursday.
Ackley - 5 for 6. :)
Lot of infield hits for just the top of the 3rd.
Soft grass tonight?
Yanks only get one run from a bases-loaded situation.
But, they're playing the Gnats, so...
shit
Yanks only get one run from a bases-loaded situation.
But, they're playing the Gnats, so...
I thought Cleveland was in the AL... (:
I like "Gnats", but they aren't really pests, are they?
May have to stick with "Natinals".
Amy, Allan toweled her off on the patio before we let her back in. It wasn't wet and muddy, just dirt. She has this amazing fur that everything just rolls right off of.
She goes out in the rain or snow, shakes herself off, and she's almost completely dry. It's the Husky in her.
Wake throws a curve as well as a fastball, right?
Zen yes he does
The RBI hit by Coghlan was on a curve, according to GDGD
SoSock, I think it was a knuckler on that hit.
That sounds like the ideal dog fur. In fact, I wish kids, furniture, clothes, and cars were made that way also.
How did Bay get himself stuck there?
But we are in the lead.
Ah, can't blame him for trying.
We really don't have to worry about Gambit getting dirty anymore. He basically just wants to sit in the sun on the deck and only goes in the yard to do his business, even the squirrels and rabbits aren't afraid of him anymore (though they do stay off the deck).
Did anybody catch who the woman on the left was? Did they ID her?
7 pitch OTT, that helps the pitch count.
s1c, I would say the same for Cody, our old girl, but her favourite place to lay is in the dirt. She digs a whole exactly her size and snuggles in.
We really don't have to worry about Gambit getting dirty anymore.
Same with Noah - if I let the grass get too high, he doesn't even want to poop there. I end up cleaning it up off the damn driveway. Although once in a blue moon or so he'll catch whiff of something in the ground and go digging furiously in our good old carolina red clay. Voles probably.
That's a mess.
How old is Gambit, S1C? Cassie is nine, and I don't think a squirrel has ever been afraid of her. Mostly they tease her by coming close and then running up the trees.
But when she lies in the yard, it's amazing how much stuff sticks to her fur.
Gambit is either 14 or 15 (was a rescue dog)
PAPI!!!!
YEAH!!! PAPI DONG!!!!!
Papi!! Now THAT was a power swing!
GOOD TIMES!!
We won't get truped again... WON'T GET TRUPED AGAINNNNNN
Think, The Who.
PAPI!!!
Yay, Papi!
"won't get truped again"
:>)
Cassie also. We think she was a year or so when we got her, so we guess 9 since we got her 8 yeas ago.
Maybe we need a JOS2 for all our dogs.
LBJ again!
I have been cautious getting into the "Papi's back" feeling. This .300 BA/1.001 OPS in June thing wasn't convincing me completely.
But with that HR, I'm a believer.
The Doctor is the Trivia answer
LBJ on a roll!
Zen: BELIEVE!!!
Why does Pedroia do that weird thing with his face? Sinus issues? Nervous tic?
I am feeling me lots of green love!!!
Usually I'm the one sticking up for religion around here, RS.
I could see that pitch was going to be hit! I like the three run lead!
more ribbies for nick "not lugo" green
Green still > Lugo
Nick Green. RBI Machine.
Lugo who?
The yankees chose Cody Ransom over Nick Green...oops
Good Times.
I go to get pizza out of oven and Papi has freaking homered when I get back. Then LBJ and Green get their second hits each. I should eat more :)
This team is so hot. What fun!
Church of Ortiz - :)
LOL
Is this batting practice? Fun to watch!
Time for some ON FIRE
To follow Ish's lead:
"Meet the new Flo
same as the old Flo"
Now, Volstad must face the Fire.
PILING ON!
Keep the line moving please.
2 in scoring position for Yook.
(from the glass half full side)
Oh, hey, Allan, L, Amy and all you other NY lovers: have you heard of the High Line? I'm probably going to check it out tomorrow. Sounds cool.
Bases loaded. Let's put this game out of reach.
Ech, pitching change.
mmmmmmmm
nope, not gonna say it :>
volstad misses the chance to get thunderstruck
Omg Ofer, I have been eagerly reading all about that. I was so disappointed it didn't open before we moved away. (more in a minute)
Sorry, Ofer, I think it was developed after my time in NY. Perhaps Allan and Laura know more about it. I had to look it up on Wikipedia!
Burke Badenhop. Sounds like a count. A nazi count.
"boris" badenhop?
The High Line was an old train line that ran above the meat-packing district. It stopped being used, and the tracks just sat there, all rusty, plants growing out of them and such.
People wanted them torn down, but amazingly, there was a competition about what to do with them.
And now, years later, it's a park with all this cutting-edge architecture, on top of what used to be an elevated train line.
It JUST opened, and I am so excited about it. It's my kind of thing. I guess I will see it in November.
Bay is 3/9 this year bases loaded. Time for a hit!!!
Lucky he's not an infielder. Think of the headlines each time he gets a bad hop...
rBBi
Now it gets really fun.
RBI BB
Papi oh Papi, make me Happy!!!
Hahaha. Make Tito apologise!
rBBi
So cool!
Yeah boy!!!
Tizzle with the sizzle! 8-1!
Like I said, let's put it out of reach.
And Papi definitely feeling better.
I am storing up a gigantic I TOLD YOU SO for all the Sox fans who were ready to give up on Ortiz 3 weeks ago.
More Papi!
He's Baaa-aaaaack
(in my best Jack Nicholson voice)
The time between "in play, run(s)" and the notice that it was a single was kind of breathless.
But...still! Well done, Large Father!
gotta make sure all those inherited runners score!
Zen - that lag can be endless sometimes, no?
Half the time I find out details here before GDGD gets caught up.
THERE's a curve!!!
12-6 break and Kot's got his glove just sitting there and bam! the ball falls in.
2nd hit by the #9 hitter - boo
Come on, Tim. Just because you have a huge lead, don't get complacent.
Bleh
Still 8-2 in the 5th? I'm fine with that.
And the Nats take the lead against the Yankees!
Sun Sentinel remembers the Apologize game.
Why do you guys use GDGD instead of MLB audio? It's only $15 for the entire season.
I would trade a Sox loss for a Nats sweep of the MFY.
Bingo - out of it.
$15 - seriously?
I thought it was more than that.
I'll be checking into that soon, maybe tnight.
"I would trade a Sox loss for a Nats sweep of the MFY."
Not me. The most important thing is the Red Sox winning. Anything else is a distant second.
smart canadian!

Not me. The most important thing is the Red Sox winning. Anything else is a distant second.
Well, the way I look at it, the MFY are very probably our biggest rivals for first place. So it's not like their getting swept wouldn't help the Sox. And the disgrace of it would be delicious gravy.
Wow, this Leake kid from Ariz. St. just gave up only his 3rd homer of the season.
And he's their ace starter, not a reliever.
Pretty solid, especially against aluminum bats.
(I know, they're not really al. anymore)
Even after this horrific slump fy still almost 400 oba.
Here we go Red Sox!!!
Here we go Red Sox!!!
#1 has to be Red Sox winning. As long as we keep winning, nobody can catch us.
smart canadian!
That's redundant! [sniff]
Hanley making like slugo
I knew the trivia answer was Lowell. I didn't know the stats, but it was obvious that's why they used the q.
They're talking about the apologize game.
Hanley doing his Lugo impersonation.
Kottaras is going to be wore slap out when he gets in.
E-6!
Ortiz a home run and three RBIs? :)
I gotta quit coming home halfway through these games!
eck being nice to hanley, saying it was a tough short hop. bullshit.
Quit trying to pull that ball Drew!!!
I seem to be having internet issues again. Brand new router and having trouble loading pages. ARGGGH. Too frustrating to wait for the page to load.
For anybody watching on gdgd, I just found this stream link:

Amy who is your isp provider?
He's Baaa-aaaaack
(in my best Jack Nicholson voice)
I think the best Jack Nicholson quote is "I want you to hold it between your knees."
Bay!!!
bay being manny with the cannon
Don't be running on our Canuck arm!
Whoa.
Texas, down 6-2 at the beginning of this inning, has tied it. After a homer, but still up by 3 the ASU 2nd baseman didn't cover 1st on a bunt until too late resulting in a bad throw, another run and 2 men on. Then a double tied it.
Hanley trying to run on water! The Bay, that is.
eck being nice to hanley, saying it was a tough short hop. bullshit.
It was a badenhop!
Hanley is not having a good game...
mdc up
I can't see any reason not to send Timmeh out there for one more. If a couple of batters reach, get MDC in.
Ofer
GRACIAS!
I got eyes.
Sosock, glad I could be of service.
L(ast)O(ut)L(owell) has been way to often the last few games.
Is it just me, or does it seem that as Papi has slowly turned it around, Lowell has travelled the other direction?
Quality start I'd say :)
MDC in.
Another shitty start by timmeh
OK, I reset everything. Let's see how this goes.
S1C, it is Comcast. We just got a brand new router because the other one was pretty old. So I can't believe it's the router. But who knows....
Amy,
go here for a speed test of your connection. Will help tell you where you are having your slowness.
