Red Sox - 000 312 000 - 6 7 0David Ortiz crushed a three-run home run in the fourth, Jason Varitek hit a two-run dong in the sixth and the Sox bullpen, in relief of Lester (6-6-3-2-6, 103) held back the Nats.
Nationals - 010 002 100 - 4 8 0
Jacoby Ellsbury made two nice running catches to keep the score at 6-4. With a runner of third and two outs in the seventh, Ryan Zimmerman drove the ball to deep left center, but LBJ ran it down, banging into the wall. With one out on the bottom of the ninth, Willie Harris's drive to deep right-center was also hauled in.
Ortiz now has 1,002 career RBI and 296 career home runs. He also singled and scored in the sixth on Tek's dong. ... Dustin Pedroia had a double and an RBI-single. ... Jason Bay struck out three times and went 0-for-4.
The Yankees and Blue Jays both won, so Boston stays 5 GA in the East.

This date in baseball history:
2005 - Thanks to Bernie Williams dropping a ball in center field, the Mets become the first National League to hit three sacrifice flies in one inning. Backstop Ramon Castro's sac fly to right ties the game at 1-1 as David Wright advances to third; the Yankee's centerfielder then drops Jose Reyes deep fly ball allowing Wright to scored; Cameron skies to right plating Mientkiewicz, who had advanced to third on errant pick off throw.
Hooray for baseball. Hooray for the Red Sox. Just what I need right now.

Dave: "While you were reading that promo you missed the huge ovation for Big Papi."
Yay, Dave!
Good evening. Well, good evening for you guys. It's good middle of the night for me (:
Sorry, but...Dave = ?
Ah, somebody's back in Israel, eh? What's your clock say? Will you still be up by the end of this thing? What will end first? The game or the night?
Dave Roberts. Guess it does get confusing since Dave O'Brien does radio. Most days. He's on ESPN2 right now in ATL.
i laughed last night when roberts said kip wells has "tremendous stuff" -- today, the nationals dfa'd him!
Craig Stammen? C'mon, we can hit this guy.
Jose Veras was traded to Cleveland btw.
2:21AM is the time. And there's a good chance I'll stay up even if I don't want to. It's not that I'm really jet lagged, I've just been meeting friends till very late (or early... the sun had risen when our "night" ended each time) for my first three nights here. This night ended quite early, so I'm here.
Read somewhere that Bronson Arroyo could be available in a trade. He's making $9.5m this year.
His first inning against Toronto so far today: BB, HR, HR, 1B.
Veras? Traded? For what? He's fairly useless...
i'm rooting for the jays tonight. i want them in sole possession of 2nd tomorrow morning.
Craig Stammen? C'mon, we can hit this guy.
After five mediocre-to-bad starts, he had an excellent one against the Yanks the last time out.
"L, I am right there with you. An escape from life."
Total relaxation, but totally absorbing. The only time of day when I can put down all other concerns.
During some difficult times, the every day rhythm of the game, having it to escape to every night, was such a relief, so soothing.
Plus winning is so much fun. :)
Ofer, are you happy to be back? People must be happy to see you.
Arroyo finally records an out after giving up yet another HR. 5-0 in favor of Toronto...RS will get his wish.
Veras got traded for cash. Haha.
Also I'm pretty sure they DFA's Berroa.
roberts says the sox can score runs for "smoltzie" and that throughout his career, he needed to pitch a shutout or allow 1 or 2 runs to get a win.
ummm, wasn't atlanta a pretty good team to win 12 or 13 division titles in a row??????
wtf dave?
WHOA HOLY SHIT that was SCARY!!
Lugo thought it was his lucky day there for a minute.
It was scary. And weird! The bat sticking in the grass like that.
Bleh.
Broken bat grounder - the bat tumbled out toward Green quicker than the ball. Green stayed with the play as quickly as he could but the BAT took a bad hop and the barrel end jumped up toward his HEAD. Fortunately he got his head out of the way and the bat glanced off his right shoulder. Ball ended up in short OF.
Awright, they scored first!
I am happy to be back. Whether that's a short-term or long-term feeling remains to be seen. As for people being happy to see me... I guess so. You'd have to ask them. But several people acted happy.
It's kinda fun to see Papi playing first base.
ummm, wasn't atlanta a pretty good team to win 12 or 13 division titles in a row??????
They did it with their pitching.
1997 OPS+ 99.
1996 OPS+ 96.
1995 OPS+ 91.
Etc.
Awright, they scored first!
The Sox are just padding their "wins when other team scores first" stats.
It's kinda fun to see Papi playing first base.
Cafardo says he's DHing.
Wil Nieves! How are ya, old friend? Nice to see ya.
dear sox:
did you not get my perfect game note?
Sox got 'em right where they want 'em. Just like last night.
Re Braves, they did do it with pitching, of course, but do we know if Smoltz was a hard luck pitcher who regularly lacked run support, the way (eg) Randy Johnson often did?
Ofer, that's cool. I have no doubt people were very happy to see you.
I call a Lester hit.
I'm not saying this just because he's playing well now - earlier comments in the season supports this - but I really thought Nick Green would be a good player for the Red Sox. Not his first few games, but he got consistent playing time when Lowrie went down and he kept up with the other guys in stats.
Ofer, your message didn't reach Lester in time. You know, being on the other side of the world, etc.
Maybe not the other side but a third of the way or so.
I hope Ofer is right, that would be fun.
Ofer didn't say what inning the hit would be in.
L that's fine. Maybe Lester will get the message.
Natinals pitcher gets a hit.
oh good lord...
Joba's first AB... Lines one off the pitcher Kawakami's HEAD. Back of the head/neck.
Kawakami's up and walking back to the dugout with trainer, but it's the end of the inning anyways.
Joba was thrown out at first btw. Think it was a 4-3.
joba always drilling guys in the head...
Dave, how about you remind viewers that base runners also distract the batter?
Well... 1-4-3.
Belt high and away, but it's down to you, Dave.
Looks like Kawakami's done. ATL's got a guy in the pen.
After three perfect innings...poor guy, Kawakami. Hope he's all right.
Ofer, your message didn't reach Lester in time. You know, being on the other side of the world, etc.
It was a long distance call (I crack myself up sometimes...)
Finally.
fuck yeah half dong
I can't believe Joba hit someone while batting.
drew hacking
2 ab, 2 pitches
and of course dave loves the out.
fuck yeah half dong
Sounds like a line from a punk song.
davidson says I AM THE SHOW
Magadan questioning the ump's authoritah.
What's the story with Magadan?
If Stammen gets that call all night we're in trouble... and there goes our pitching coach...
whoops... hitting coach.
"Sounds like a line from a punk song."
I was trying to write the rest of it, but maybe it's just
fuck yeah half dong
fuck yeah half dong
fuck yeah half dong
fuck fuck yeah yeah yeah
He didn't like the 1-0 strike call that was only a hair off the outside corner.
pitch low and away to yook, called a strike
then ump takes off mask and starts screaming at sox dugout.
maagdan gets tossed, he and tito come out to bitch some more.
davidson looks like he's ready to yell to the crowd "anyone else wanna a piece of me?"
asshole
bad call too.
nice chant going there
LETS GO RED SOX
Clap, clap, clapclapclap!
Oofa... nice curveball strikes out Bay.
PAPI!!!!
QUADRANGULAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ORTIZ IS BACK AND HE'S BACK BIG
HEELLLLL YESSSS!
Huge ovation, so great to hear.
Woo Papi!
Looking at the box score, all I see is Red Sox Nation(als)
Hoo boy!!!!
Hoo boy!!!!
Two half dongs at once for Big Papi!
Man, sometimes it's hard not to shout out for joy while at work.
I started to feel it...started to kind of expect it in that "You know Papi's got a good shot at an HR" kind of way. And I kept wondering: do I allow myself to expect it a little bit?
I think he's back, at least as a good power hitter if not the overall OPS monster of years gone by.
I just read that it became official and formal and etc. that the Winter Classic will be played at Fenway -- Bruins vs. Flyers.
TB up 2-0 vs. Philly, but Garza has loaded the bases with no outs.
dah... I was hoping the Caps and Ovechkin would get to play at Fenway. Stupid Flyers. F them in the goat ass.
dah... I was hoping the Caps and Ovechkin would get to play at Fenway. Stupid Flyers. F them in the goat ass.
Flyers are a big draw on NBC, and they're calling the shots on this.
I bet the Caps would be a bigger draw, though.
We saw Ovechkin play in St. Paul!
OTT
Were you at the game where the Wild shut the Caps out? Man, that was a frustrating game. Not as frustrating as game 7 versus Pittsburgh, but I digress.
Three runs should be all we need.
Wouldn't you know, get pulled away for a work call right in the middle of a Papi dong. Good think GDGD has video replay.
Hey, I see some pitcher for the Braves is no-hitting the Yankees so far.
Were you at the game where the Wild shut the Caps out? Man, that was a frustrating game. Not as frustrating as game 7 versus Pittsburgh, but I digress.
No, the game we were at the Wild got ahead 4-0, then the Caps scored three goals in the last five minutes and had a couple of shots come close in 6-on-5 scrums in the finals seconds. Ovechkin had a goal and an assist.
Superstitions are dumb, but it's still rude to shit on the superstitious like that.
The starter in the Braves game had to leave. So the no hitter is shared, thus far.
You mean like Allan does all the time? "...is pitching a perfect game"? Or something else?
"No, the game we were at the Wild got ahead 4-0, then the Caps scored three goals in the last five minutes and had a couple of shots come close in 6-on-5 scrums in the finals seconds. Ovechkin had a goal and an assist."
I remember that game. I actually watched the whole thing even though the Caps were getting smoked. It was an exciting last two minutes, which almost made up for a lousy first fifty-eight.
Pepe more than one pitcher. Their starter got drilled by a line drive in the side of the head by Joba.
L, I knew a guy who had a band and did a punk song where the chorus went: "Wubba wubba wubba wubba wubba!!!"
Bruins-Flyers? Oh cock. I wish it was B's/Caps or B's/Rangers. But it doesn't matter so long as the Winter Classic is at Fenway.
I wonder how much tickets will be!
Effing Ribeye!
FY gets it done.
fuck yeah fuck yeah
single baby
yeah yeah yeah
You mean like Allan does all the time?
That's ratifying the superstition, not undermining it. He only does that for opposing teams.
wubba wubba, great lyrics! :)
ON FIRE!!
DP!
Superstitions are dumb, but it's still rude to shit on the superstitious like that.
It's not like it's a Sox game!
that's the only reason I mentioned it.
Evening, all. I am back from getting ice cream. Heard the Papi dong on the XM radio. Nats announcer said he hit the century mark in RBIs. Wouldn't it be the millenial mark??
Oh definitely only for opposing teams. I must have missed the undermining part.
Wouldn't it be the millenial mark??
Yeah, he passed 1,000 RBIs.
Those damn semantics.
Hi, Ofer. I see you are still awake over there across the world. Hope things are going well for you in Israel.
22 pitches for Medlen... but Kawakami only lasted three innings. Odd.
Break, break, break it open, Youk.
Hi Amy!
Sox ahead + ice cream = Amy is happy.
CLIP ART up
Nice knock by Drew, but it probably should've been caught by Willingham. I'll take it though.
"Break, break, break it open, Youk"
That could also be folk music.
Francouer DONG 1-0 ATL.
Some French guy for the Braves just hit a home run.
Yes, definitely happy. Laura, does your mom like baseball? Have you converted her to the Sox?
Francoeur dong. 1-0 ATL.
Hi everyone.... stuck with the MASN feed on EI tonight - those guys are terrible!
Hi, Amy. Things are going well enough, but I'm having some trouble sleeping at the right time. Other than that, my return has been great so far.
As I recall, it takes a day for each time zone to get back on track after traveling. Plus I am sure your adrenaline is not making it easy to fall asleep. All that re-entry stuff.
Some Atlanta guy swung and missed at a pitch head-high.
Hi everyone.... stuck with the MASN feed on EI tonight - those guys are terrible!
Dibble's supposed to be hilarious, but in an irritating way I suppose.
Efd! Hi there.
Amy, my mom likes baseball well enough to watch if it's on. But she has no team, she's neutral.
Her father was a HUGE Mets fan, and Bklyn Dodgers before that.
My mom thinks it's "cute" that I became a Red Sox fan. She's always thought my fan-ness is "cute".
Just had dinner. Pounded chicken breast and marinated in taco seasoning, lime juice and oil. Bought an asiago cheese bagel from Panera Bread, put a couple of slices of cheddar cheese on it with the chicken and OMG. Had that with red potatoes.
I am back from getting ice cream.
I almost forgot to get a baguette for dinner tonight. I got the last one at the bakery right as they were closing.
Phew! I coulda been in deep, deep trouble.
LOL, Laura. It is cute that moms can still find their grown up children cute!
I hope you two are having a great time and getting to go to the places you hoped to go. ROM?
Dibble's supposed to be hilarious
So far his wit has not been on display... he spent a good five minutes after the Papidong (and then again after the break) talking about how the Nats were showing Ortiz "too much respect."
He said some other dumb stuff too, that I've already forgotten.
Just had dinner. Pounded chicken breast and marinated in taco seasoning, lime juice and oil. Bought an asiago cheese bagel from Panera Bread, put a couple of slices of cheddar cheese on it with the chicken and OMG. Had that with red potatoes.
Tri-color three-cheese tortellini (and it HAS to be tri-color or else it apparently doesn't taste as good) with alfredo sauce, sourdough baguette from the best bakery in town and virgin olive oil.
DR: you don't want Willie Harris on base.
Well yeah, it suggests you might kinda suck.
That is how I pictured Lester vs. Nationals.
I recall Dibble from ESPN, and he was insufferable then. I'm not sure he can be worse than Rick Sutcliffe who is broadcasting tonight's Yankees/Braves game, but he was pretty bad.
Hi L-girl! Glad I could join you all tonight.
looks like lester has recovered from his wildness/hits in the 2nd and 3rd
The "cute" finding is a bit annoying. It's a way of not taking me seriously. But whatever.
We've been having fun, doing the stuff we had planned. Not ROM, but other fun things. I wanted to blog about it this morning but had some anger to vent instead. :)
Tomorrow I'll do the sightseeing stuff, after I take her to the airport.
Dibble's a fucking meathead, but it's schadenfreude three nights out of ten.
Sutcliffe and Dibble are my #1 and #2 most hated announcers. Sutcliffe worse, but both are unbearable (for me).
The "cute" finding is a bit annoying. It's a way of not taking me seriously. But whatever.
In her defense, you are female and she is a self-hating woman. (Maybe.)
As I recall, it takes a day for each time zone to get back on track after traveling. Plus I am sure your adrenaline is not making it easy to fall asleep. All that re-entry stuff.
Plus, drinking with friends till 5:30AM doesn't help... my first night I was at a friend's house till 4:30, and then decided to walk back home. The 2-hour walk, that brought me through some of the older "new" neighbourhoods in Jerusalem, and circling the walls of the old city at dawn was a great way to reacquaint myself with the city.
KKK for Lester.
Medlen picks off Gardner.
Wait, that sounded bad... sorry. Lester K's the side is what I meant.
Papi on a roll---half way to the cycle!
Nice throw, Zimmerman.
TEK
TEK!!!!
whoa, Varidong!
HE'S ALIVE
yeah those triple strike outs are tough unless you're a racist
TEK DONG!!!
Haha Dave trying to do pbp and forgot that's Don's job!
Ride, Captain, Ride on your mystery ship!!
hah hah! V-tek, conducting the fuck train!
Happy Happy, Joy Joy!
Ofer, drinking with friends is part of the re-entry I was referring to. :)
And Jerusalem at dawn must be amazing. It certainly is at sunset. All that pink and gold in the buildings and the sky.
Amy, you may have noticed on last night's thread, LJ (Lisa) Cohen, who is coming to JOS1, also loves Tek. Altho her love seems to be a bit different than yours.
I am starting to see a pattern in who we beat and who those teams beat. Legit teams are winning legit games right now.
Cervelli hits a dong and celebrates like it was a walk-off. Yanks tie it 1-1.
Meanwhile, Dibble was still running down Ortiz during his and then Varitek's AB - "He knows he was overmatched and was lucky to get that pitch," referring to the change-up he hit for the HR.
This is a gimme team though but hey they beat the yankees 2 out of 3 so what does that say? And they play in the NL East which has to be the best division in the NL.
MFYs' replacement level catcher hits a dong. 1-1.
varidong, i forgot that one :)
Yanks tie it with a HR by some guy named Cervelli.
Go figure.
varidong, i forgot that one :)
We don't get to use it much.
Since everybody's talking about food: tomorrow I'm probably going to the old city to one of the best hummus places in Israel. It's great, and really cheap. Plus they make a salad with labane (a kind of fermented, sour cream cheese) and mint that is extraordinary. And baklawas later... man, I've missed Israeli food a LOT.
This is a gimme team though but hey they beat the yankees 2 out of 3 so what does that say?
That the Yankees are playing exceptionally poorly right now? (A fact that seems to be lost on the Nats announcers, not to keep harping on that.)
I think I knew LJ was a Tek fan, but must have missed her comments about him last night. I will have to go see how she loves him differently. Nice to see that she is coming to JOS1! Two female Cohens who are Tek fans. How will anyone tell us apart?
And Jerusalem at dawn must be amazing. It certainly is at sunset. All that pink and gold in the buildings and the sky.
Haha, it's about the same, just on the opposite walls...
There's that low strike again... Ellsbury Ks.
Cervelli hits a dong and celebrates like it was a walk-off. Yanks tie it 1-1.
Is that his first career dong? That would make you celebrate a bit...
Is that his first career dong? That would make you celebrate a bit...
It is, but he's still an asshat.
Medlen loads the bases with 2 outs.
kotsay in for tizzle
Yanks tie it with a HR by some guy named Cervelli.
Go figure.
I wrecked the no-hitter with my bad form!
Sorry!
Why's Papi out?
no reason. ... lazy?
Oh come on, a guy's first ML dong? He should do whatever he wants. If he was a Sox we wouldn't mind.
I wrecked the no-hitter with my bad form!
Sorry!
That's the thing with that superstition: most no-hitters are broken up. So there's always an opportunity to blame the guy who didn't comply with the superstition.
Oh come on, a guy's first ML dong? He should do whatever he wants. If he was a Sox we wouldn't mind.
If he were a Sox, he wouldn't be an MFY and therefore wouldn't be an asshat.
benjamin with the logic.
I believe she lusts heavily after him.
Dicks on the pond. A-Rod...........
Damn.
Asshat or not, I don't like the hypocrisy.
.......drives in two runs with a line drive single. Cock.
3-1 MFY.
A-R*d fails to squander.
Yeah, lust has no part of my feelings for Tek.
Asshat or not, I don't like the hypocrisy.
Governor Sanford (R-SC) has the market cornered on hypocrisy today.
Ish, you owe Jere a nickel.
Jere's not threading anymore, btw. He told me he's enjoying computer-free games now.
Altho he left the door open to come back if he chooses.
Governor Sanford (R-SC) has the market cornered on hypocrisy today.
You BEAT ME TO IT!!!!

There's always plenty of hypocrisy to go around. Consistency for its own sake is a worthless goal.
9C agrees with me.

That's ridicuolus....first meat and now this......
Fast thinking by Lester.
