Marlins - 100 000 000 - 1 6 0Penny (5-3-1-4-3, 100) danced between the raindrops all night, stranding seven runners, including five at either 2nd or 3rd, in the first four innings. He relied mostly on his fastball, as his breaking stuff was ineffective. Penny retired six of his final seven batters, though, and collected his 100th career victory.
Red Sox - 020 200 11x - 6 9 1
The one Florida run was unearned, as it scored on the first error of Jacoby Ellsbury's major league career (at 232 games, it was the longest errorless streak by an outfielder in Red Sox history). Lyndon made up for the gaff: he walked twice, stole a base, and hit his third home run of the year (over the bullpens in right-center) in the seventh.
David Ortiz doubled, walked twice, and scored three runs. Dustin Pedroia went 3-for-5, stole two bases and drove in three runs. Rocco Baldelli singled twice.
The game was the 500th consecutive sellout at Fenway Park, dating back to May 15, 2003.
The quartet of Justin Masterson, Hideki Okajima, Ramon Ramirez and Jonathan Papelbon put up a 4-3-0-2-5 line. The only jam was from Ram-Ram, who allowed a walk and single to start the eighth, before getting a fly ball to left and two strikeouts.
The Natinals beat the Yankees 3-2, so Boston is now 3 GA in the East.

Andrew Miller (4.30, 98 ERA+) / Brad Penny (5.32, 89 ERA+)
In his last time out, Penny pitched six shutout innings against the Yankees.
He has pitched into the sixth inning in each of his last eight starts and in 10 of his 12 starts this season. Since the end of April, he has posted a 4.10 ERA (the AL average for the season is 4.45).
Lineup:
Terry Francona said moving Daisuke Matsuzaka to the bullpen is unlikely:Pedroia, 2B
Ellsbury, CF
Youkilis, 1B
Bay, LF
Lowell, 3B
Ortiz, DH
Baldelli, RF
Varitek, C
Green, SS
My first thought was that if we tell him that we're putting him in long relief that's probably not going to build his confidence a whole lot. You know, there's a lot of things to think about. When you put a guy in the bullpen, who comes out of the bullpen? When you send a guy to the bullpen, how does he react to the bullpen?
Also, Daisuke is typically our guy who takes the longest to warm up ... he goes out there a good 45-50 minutes before the game and throws a lot, so is that going to work? ... We can't just get caught up in what the fans and [media] are caught up in because we'll make some poor decisions.

Whoa! I came out of my zoned out state to see seven o'clock is here! Bring on the baseball!

95/96 heat for the K
@9 - If you find his full interview, he states that this is all because he blew it last year (evidently he did like a lot of immature players do, and spent a lot of time chasing skirt and drinking) and that he put himself in this position. Basically, I'm with Tito on this, he better be chomping at the bit and wanting to be on the big club.
smokin'
97 for this K
How do we trade this guy!? It would have to really be worth it.
How do you improve a first place team?
By getting a shortstop (assuming that Jedi is not the answer).
I trust the Jedi. I think he will do.
The Jedi has the potential, but with him playing hurt last year and him trying to play hurt this year I just don't think we have enough to determine yet whether he can handle the job. I also think there is disagreement in the FO about whether he can since they have been shopping / looking at what it would take to acquire a SS.
ouch
E-8?
damn!
Where is the strike zone?

she's out tonight, so she missed the ugliness
This inning started off so bad ass too!
an unusual 1-3
I'm curious about this Ellsbury batting second thing. I prefer Drew there.

Best thing he did last year was a penthouse pet....

Drew's not playin', when he plays he will bat 2nd
damn - left chest/shoulder, right above the O in Sox
He really mentioned chasing girls? I sort of assumed that was an issue, but it wasn't fair a fair assumption.
He needs a girl next door type to support him.
WTF! Another Ellsbury BB! I love it.
Actually, she's not only Penthouse but #24 on Deal or no Deal (I think its #24).
Not that it matters a babe by any other name is still a babe (sorry will).
Actually he never mentions it at all (as far as I can find but it was reported last year that he was playboying it and he admitted that he was immature).
This line up will be the lineup when facing lefties (assuming it is Drew who is sitting).
Ugh - Youkilis hitting a whopping .222 in June. 105 points less than in may, that is almost Pedroia territory.
that line drive almost solved our rotation issues ...

Needed that, now one more Brad!!!
Penny @ 72 pitches (47 for strikes).
His success has been Matsuzakan so far.
No, what's rootzoo? All-pig zoo?
Fish are making him work, but if he isn't going to pitch until next friday, let him go to 120+
damn, for a second I thought my arrival to the thread would coincide with a doung. Oh well.
I remember, two batters into this game, when I was pumping my fist and sure that Penny couldn't be traded.
Ugh, Penny has not had a good history vs the Marlins. 5.00 ERA and 1-1 record.
Penny pulls a Daisuke and escapes!!!
Another Matsuzakan inning.
FLA 7 LOB:

I shall report nothing further.
Good evening, Joy Nation. Just got back from, gasp, a 4 1/4 mile run. More than double my previous furthest distance.
How do I celebrate? A burrito and the Red Sox!

Youk needs a day off
Evening, all. Glad to see we have the lead.
Evening, all. Glad to see we have the lead.
Evening! cold and rainy in Montana tonight. Not good barbecue weather, but whatever...!
Not Lugo, makes me green with envy!!!
Pepe we're getting geared up for rain tomorrow and Friday.
Hi Amy, and le meow to Pepe.
been raining here since about 2.
Pepe we're getting geared up for rain tomorrow and Friday.
I kinda like it. It's 62 and rainy right now. In Saskatchewan in the summer when I was a kid if it rained, it was always, like 87 F or worse. In Fresno, Calif., it simply never rained. EVER!
Amy shows up and the Sox decide to go like a lamb. (j/k)
I love this donkey! Long relief Master(son).
Last 10 games Youk .211 BA, Last 20 games .246.
Give the man a day off Tito, Kotsay can handle 1b!!!
S1C, most people do not find that I have a calming effect on anyone.
EFD, good to see you. I understand we have a common link---a former camper of mine from years ago is a friend of yours. Small world.
It best not be raining Sunday. I'm going to Fenway then.
L home, say hi. not sure if she'll be on.
Did you get your router problems figured out?
Hi l!!!
Hi Laura!
Amy, really?! Can you give me a hint? Where was this camp? Or is the answer to be found on Facebook...
Blown away.
S1C, the router seems to be working. I called Comcast, and they could not diagnose anything (of course) without sending someone out. He did say there was a problem with the "packet." So tomorrow a service guy is coming.
But then I called Linksys. First person was a total idiot. Asked me if we had walls between us and the router... Second person had me reconfigure the router. It seems ok for now, but who knows.
Oh! Amy, I think I figured it out - that is some coincidence!
Amy you called Linksys? You didn't online chat with them?
We have only one mutual friend on FB so you will see it right away if you go to my profile.
She was my camper at Camp Moonbeam back in 1969.... I saw her comment on something you had posted and was totally confused!
I called them. On line chat was backed up. It was a free call, so why not talk to a person. Even if the person is a total idiot.
Hi all. I'm home early, I have a cool off-topic little story for you. Joe Grav would appreciate this, but he's not around these days. (He's DVR'ing games and watching them when he gets home late from work.)
I am game for the off topic story (surprise!).
I don't get DVRing games. I know lots of people do it, but to me, sports need to be LIVE.
I may have mentioned I was hoping the Penguins would win the Stanley Cup, b/c we have a good friend who is a fan, and who was at his parents' home in P'burgh that week.
Our friend was there for his dad's 90th birthday - and his dad was the first GM of the Penguins, and pretty much created them into a serious NHL team.
They went to Game 6 as the team's guest, and his birthday was announced on the scoreboard. Tom (our friend) told me people were coming up to them all night and thanking his dad and congratulating him.
His dad was in a limo at the parade! Tom said his dad said it was one of the best days of his life.
Tom is an amazing guy too. He's Canadian now, but was originally here as a Vietnam War resister.
Sweet story, Laura! I know nothing about the Penguins or hockey, but I can appreciate the family story.
Jack Riley, our friend Tom Riley's dad.
Laura, that's a great story!
looks like jeemer coming in.
I don't know anything about the Penguins either. No need, just a lovely family story, as you say.
John Henry apparently sent this twitter message immediately after his appearance in the NESN booth:
500th straight sellout tonight @Fenway Park. Baseball is an affair of the heart in New England. We are so lucky to have been a part of it.
Great story.
And the Rockies are rockin' Diamond David Price in the second inning.
I was cheering for the Pens, too.
Only because I'm kinda tired of the Wings winning all the time. I'm not one of those people who hates the Wings. I genuinely feel sorry for Detroit and all, but they've won four Cups since '97! And Pittsburgh's had it pretty tough economically, too, the last few years. And I respect Mario Lemiuex coming back from Hodgkin's.
HAHAH! John Henry helping call the game.
"It's a line drive, center field, base hit"
well done.
That fragging Okajima, you just can't trust him.
wash 3, mfy 1 (8th)
LBJ!!!
wash 3, mfy 1 (8th)
C'mon 'Spos!
LBJ is hot, hot, hot!
That's my boy!!!
(He waited for me to come home to do that.)
LBJ makes the error when Laura's not around to see, then makes with the dong after she's back - nice.
Who is this kid?!?! Home runs? Walks?
that had a pleasant elevation
old yook woulda destroyed the dugout right about now
No longer a save situation so Oki probabably comes back out?
pedro was up earlier
Yeah I saw that, but I'm figuring, Oki for 2 outs and then Ram Ram.
That's my boy!!!
(He waited for me to come home to do that.)
It would be nice to see him make the All-Star team this year.
Not a chance for LBJ making the All star game. What is he 7th in voting?
ram in
The way he has being giving up bombs lately, makes me cringe, you just can't trust hime (snark)
"LBJ makes the error when Laura's not around to see, then makes with the dong after she's back - nice."
Such a nice boy! Very considerate.
fuck you zit face
mdc up
Don't blow this nice lead!
snuffer up too
Hoo, boy, I see the Yankees coming back on the 'Spos in the 9th.
Damon went yard and Winning run at the plate in the form of A-fraud.
Come on nats
can the nats spell w-i-n?
I am not putting on the YES Network until that game is over, even for a quick look.
wion.
About fragging time
This game is going just fine, on the other hand. Why would I leave?!
Yes. Tres bien!
MFY's 1st & 3rd 1 out. Milk dud at the plate.
Lost the damn connection again.
At least the TV is working.
I will never be a typical Sox fan. I couldn't give a shit about the Yankees except when we are playing them.
Actually L-girl, last year it was the rays I worried about I only worry about who is ahead and who is behind in the standings. right, now that is MFY
oops, canoe not dud at the plate.
Right, s1c. I do that too, but not this early in the season. I try not to scoreboard watch until after the ASG.
hi everyone.
More rain here, will it EVER stop?
1st scrimmage game for my Big Leaguers - rained out.
Saw 5 IP, 1R, 3H and wondere why Penny was pulled. Then saw the 4BB and 100P. mmmmmm
Nice relief work though.
canoe dp's on the 9th pitch. Nats win!!!
Wion!
meanwhile, the rest of us are cursing the yanks tying up a game on april 8.
I'm not proud of it, but I have to admit that the pleasure I get from a Sox win and a Yankees loss are very, very similar.
I think it's at least partly because I'm in NJ and hear about them all the damn time.
Nice to think of a three game lead on June 17.
phew! Thanks for the updates, s1c and Nick!
I've got to pick up my mom at the airport tonight. How is it that her flight was 45 minutes late on departure, but is currently 10 minutes early on arrival. weird.
3-0 count after 2 straight walks - think he's taking?
Get a lower flight lane and you can make up time.
There's no spittle in it, but I find joy when the yankees lose. but more joy when the sox win. now, when both those happen, I blossom.
time to KO kiko
Like I said, I'll never be typical. I'm not sure it's just my background (dark past) either. I think it's just not in me to care that much about another team - unless my team is playing them.
yeah, s1c, but it's almost an hour difference. I don't know about that flying stuff, but that's curious. I could see 10-20 minutes sure.
It must be mom visit time. Mine comes in next week.
cool. I'll have my mom wave up to yours.
It is weird that flights can make up time along the way.
fy nearly pulls his shoulder out of its socket on that swing
I reluctantly admit to enjoying a Yankee loss. Only reluctant because I know that a Yankee loss makes Harvey sad, so I feel a bit guilty about the schadenfreude.
Where is yours flying in from?
FY!
FY comes through again, and why is Tek not sliding?
What the hell was that, Tek?
fuck. tek didn't look good coming in on that. insurance, though.
wow, that was a lot more exciting when the ball left the bat than it was when the ball came back in to home.
hale fucked that up.
Nice work by the catcher there. 3b coach, not so much.
totally intentional tripping on that one.
tek too -- shoulda went in linebacker style
Not Tek's fault - Hale's.
tiz - 3 rs
FY: You fragging moron, don't you know how to slide? You cost me an RBI you fugly ape.
Tek: Shut up or i'll pop your head like a pimple shrimp.
I reluctantly admit to enjoying a Yankee loss. Only reluctant because I know that a Yankee loss makes Harvey sad, so I feel a bit guilty about the schadenfreude.
I enjoy every Yankees loss, because it seems like nearly every year (except maybe 2008), they go on some insane run of winning 25 out of 30, so every loss creates a bigger hole for them todig out of.
Yeah, that foot sticking out was nasty. Tek did not look too graceful there.
Laura: Olympia, Wa.
Amy: thanks to the book of faces I got to see a picture of Harvey (and you!) and all I could think of was how I could see the Yankee fan in him. I'm sure he's still a nice guy.
harvey has had plenty to be happy about - he could use some sadness
Oh, much farther away than mine. She must be very happy to see Emma.
Nick, given how you feel about the Yankees, I am not sure that is a compliment.
Allan, ouch. On baseball terms, ok.
Although he always likes to tell me how he stuck with the Yankees all through their losing years also.
"harvey has had plenty to be happy about - he could use some sadness"
he and his fellow fans have been getting their share, and will be getting more and more of it.
somehow i doubt allan ever felt reluctant about the schadenfreude in our days on opposite sides!
only talking about baseball, btw, amy. :>)
Pap for the non-save.
They are both very excited. She's going to be here almost a month (oy), but she's going to have emma every day instead of our having to pay for summer camp/day program stuff. They're doing "Camp Emma". Gardening, hiking, dancing, art, reading, cooking, games and more.
That sounds great! Except for having mom around for a month, that can be very trying on all the adults. But it will be awesome for Emma and Grandma.
