Red Sox - 102 002 000 - 5 9 0Dice (5-6-1-3-6, 96) pitched out of two serious jams and after a trio of Red Sox relievers tossed three perfect innings, Jonathan Papelbon needed 35 pitches to get through the ninth: three singles followed by three strikeouts.
Tigers - 100 000 000 - 1 9 2
Boston grabbed a 1-0 lead six pitches into the game. Dustin Pedroia doubled to left on a 1-0 pitch and scored when J.D. Drew singled to center on a 1-2 count. Dice walked Clete Thomas to start the home first and Placido Polanco singled. Magglio Ordonez GIDP, but Miguel Cabrera and Curtis Granderson singled. Dice struck out Brandon Inge for the third out.
The Red Sox took a 3-1 lead in the third when Drew singled and Bay smashed a one-out, two-run dong to left, his 16th tater of the year.
Matsuzaka walked the 8th and 9th hitters (on 16 pitches) to start the Detroit fifth, but struck out Thomas, got Polanco to line out to left and fanned Ordonez.
The Sox scored twice off relievers Ryan Perry and Brandon Lyon in the sixth on three walks, a single and a bases-loaded HBP.
Manny Delcarmen pitched a 1-2-3 sixth, Hideki Okajima retired the four batters he faced and Ramon Ramirez got the final two hitters in the eighth. In the ninth, Bot allowed a broken bat single to Cabrera (cbsb), a line drive single to left by Granderson (bbf) and a ground single to left by Inge (f). Bases loaded, no one out.
Josh Anderson battled through an 11-pitch at-bat (ffffbfffff), but chased a high fastball for strike three. Pinch-hitter Jeff Larish whiffed on an inside heater (bbff) and Ramon Santiago (bbcs) struck out on gas to end the game.
David Ortiz slapped an opposite-field single in the second inning, but grounded to first (a 3635 DP) to end the third and struck out in his last three at-bats. ... Jacoby Ellsbury reached base four times: an infield error, two singles and an intentional walk. ... Jason Varitek singled, doubled and walked.

The Red Sox (29-22), who trail the Yankees (30-21) by one game, visit Comerica Park for three games against the AL Central-leading Tigers.

Last season, Dice held hitters to an MLB-best .164 average with runners in scoring position. Everyone knew the Houdini act could not last. In his four starts this year, hitters are batting .400 (10-for-25) with RISP. He has still pitched far better with the bases empty:

I think that that goes against everything I believe in. I think the one thing I'm supposed to be is consistent and that goes against that. ... We are getting to the point where we're 50 games into the season and I think the numbers start meaning something. ... We need to have our on-base guys for the guys in the middle of the order. ... Sometimes when we don't score, you can look at a lot of things. It's a little easy to get mixed up, so I just try to sit back and think, "OK, what can help us?" without forgetting what can hurt us.Tito also said "there is a pretty decent chance" Mark Kotsay (9-for-26 for the PawSox) would be activated tonight. Jeff Bailey likely would be sent back to Pawtucket.
MLB.com:
How does Porcello [a 6-5, 200 RHP] follow up a 5-0 May? Continuing the unbeaten streak into June would be an impressive step. In addition to being the first Tigers pitcher since John Doherty in 1984 to win five or more games in a month, the impressive rookie has posted a 1.50 ERA during his current five-game winning streak. According to Elias Sports Bureau, that makes Porcello -- at 20 years, 151 days old -- the second-youngest pitcher in Major League history to go 5-0 with an ERA of 1.50 or better in any five-start span (the Mets' Dwight Gooden went 5-0 with a 1.43 ERA in five starts at age 19 in 1984). ... He's worked seven innings only once in his nine starts, a clear sign that the Tigers will take a conservative approach and not overwork him.BP 2009:
Porcello was universally seen as one of the top pitching prospects in the game before he threw a pitch as a professional, and in his pro debut, he led the Florida State League in ERA as a teenager. Yet, for some reason, his season was categorized by some as a disappointment, mostly due to a low strikeout rate. However, the Tigers limited him by only allowing a small number of breaking balls per start and had him focus on his low-90s sinker rather than his monster four-seam fastball. Despite this deliberate pair of handicaps, we repeat: he still led the league in ERA.Porcello's highest pitch count total of the season has been 95; he's been between 82 and 89 in seven of his nine starts (log).

John Smoltz pitched five innings (5-4-1-0-6, 73) for Greenville (A) on Sunday, allowing one run on four hits to the Charleston RiverDogs. Smoltz struck out his final three batters.
I don't think I'm far away. Today was more a familiar pitching that I thought I was capable of the last month, two months. For the most part, I'm really pleased with today's effort. I felt really fresh in the fifth inning, even though it's the longest stint I've had.Smoltz's next two starts are expected to be with Pawtucket.
Jon Lester was the first Boston lefty to strike out at least 12 batters while allowing three hits or fewer since Roger Moret (9-1-0-2-12) on August 21, 1974. All three of the hits allowed by Lester on Sunday were infield singles.
The Red Sox executed their first two sacrifice bunts of the season on Sunday; by contrast, Seattle has 26. ... Steve Buckley of the Herald checks in with Portland starter Junichi Tazawa (2.82 in 10 starts). ... In his June 1 mailbag, MLB.com's Ian Browne writes: "I could see [Jed Lowrie] being back in the lineup in about three weeks."

I'll have to settle for two games at Fenway and one in Toronto this season.

Lugo must be in the doghouse.....
No Lugo... :-)
Hoping for a quick return to the gamethreads, friends. I'm currently on the schoolwork DL - ton of stuff been going on for the past month or so.
A lot of talk burbling on Sons of Sam Horn and elsewhere about the Sox trading for a hitter.
Is a Nick Johnson worth it? Not much power, but awesome OBP. He could cycle through DH/1B, sitting Ortiz against RHP (Johnson or Lowell as DH) and giving Lowell days off he might well need vs. lefties (Johnson plays 1B, Youk at 3B). His injury history, of course, is bad.
There's even talk of blowing off major prospects (including Jed) to get Hanley Ramirez back. He's signed through 2014. Whether it's Theo talking about it or just sports writers, I don't know. That would be huge.
Some kind of shakeup on the way?
Everything I read says that FLA will absolutely not trade Hanley, so everyone should stop saying "Get it done Theo!"
I know, why would Florida trade their marquee player just cuz we really want him.....
Eck tonite.
tigers feed on EI, but NESN on a rogers channel!
way to rip DP
I lived in Detroit for 2007 while going to grad school at Wayne State u. I went to 2 games there, one Dice-K loss in extreme heat in July.
FUCK YEAH!
nice start
The other game was Verlander's no-hitter against MIL, I decided to go see an interleague contest for the heck of it and then THAT HAPPENED!
Well, that's a good way to start the game.
Now someone drive him in.
Quick 1-0 lead!
hooray for quick runs
there's a run!
Fire!
Didn't this pitcher used to be in Youth of Today?
Interesting out-call by the first base ump.
He didn't go for that straight shot. He went for more of an upper right-hand jab.
This ump punches like a girl. :P
I save the day (night) by finding NESN.
one half inning, one missed pitch for NESN
And now the question: Which version of Dice-K are we getting tonight?
there's more than one version?
TEX had man on third, one out, could not score vs Ass Job Burnett
there goes the no-walker
"there's more than one version?"
I certainly hope there is, or this is going to be a long season.
Oh look, a leadoff walk.
I know, why would Florida trade their marquee player just cuz we really want him.....Buchholz, Lowrie, and more.
Plus, after next year, it's going to get difficult for the Marlins to pay his salary.
I'm not saying it's likely.
Optimism fading quickly.
DP please?
key dp. Maggli-slo
My stomach is flipping due to the roller coaster we're on...already.
Alright, nicely done.
Now get the third out.
What rollercoaster?
tied, bah
Or not...
Well, I guess the one good thing is that he's only giving up singles so far.
Out please!
Oh, thanks.
26-pitch inning.
Yarrrrrgh.
We're lookin' at 9-9 after 9.
Any chance we can get that lead back?
Yanks strand 2, 0-0 after 1.
and dice at 234 pitches
eat it shifty
Papi base hit!
2 opp fie in a ro
singles are good, if they keep coming
opp field action
lets go lyndon
Alright Lyndon, drive some runs in here.
Or at least don't ground into a double play.
technically that's 3 opposite field hits in a row. Unless they call an E on that...
Alright, do not waste a bases-loaded opportunity.
Why was Green hacking there? Make the kid throw a strike with bases loaded.
and it is an E on that other play. I thought it should have been one.
Daaaaamn. So much for that huh?
Bleh
porcello being dice
Squirrgil!!
It could be an elephant walking around out there and Drew would just have that same expression on his face.
savingsquirrels.com!!!!
Good thing Tala is watching the game. She works full-time chasing squirrels.
Squirrel on the field and savingsquirrels.com is behind the plate???
i would like to see a list of pitchers and what % of their innings are 1-2-3? where does dice rank?
That was supposed to say "good thing Tala is NOT watching the game". duh
Eck loves gas!
eck loves gas!
Castig going on about The Sopranos since one of the actors threw out the 1st pitch.
Nolan Ryan 277 WP
My NESN's in 3-D or something.
embarrassing! walking on ball 3
Wait, they even announced the next batter after the guy thought it was ball 4.... it sounded like
He can't finish the inning...he hasn't loaded the bases yet.
Very inefficient so far.
Third out please?
Wha' happened?
Yanks continue their streak of runs scoring on balls off fielders' gloves. That's 3 in a row, one tonight.
Did you just see an ad where they close up on a guy's face, and then you see his whiskers, like cartoon whiskers who are waiting to be shaved? YUUUUUCK
I think we must have Canadian ads, as here's a Conservative ad bashing the Liberal leader. So you probably didn't see the whiskers.
no I saw Mayor Menino, talking about...I don't know what.
ablaze
L, Letric Shave?
DUMB.
I was gonna say, I love this stuff...UNLESS IT MEANS MISSING PITCHES. And sure enough, the next pitch, we don't see.
I guess it's a Cdn feed. I don't know what the ad was for. It was just gross!
Or...GDGD fucks it up.
Whatever
DOUNG!!!!!!!!!!!!!
DOOUUNNNGGGGGG HOMRE CANADA THUNDER BAY!!!!

Woo!

That may have reached his native country!
THUNDER!
i heart bay
you deserve that Porcello
Come on Papi...as of today I have more dongs than you in my summer softball league! Tie me!
Breaking News: Mysterious baseball lands in downtown Thunder Bay. Origin unknown. Investigation ongoing.
Ah fuck. Not who I want in a rundown.
The Yanks' streak of scoring on balls off gloves is over...because they scored ON A BALK! Goddamit. 2-0.
Come on Mike, I know you arn't that slow; IDK why he wasn't off on contact?
when bay really tags one, he has this thing where he has the bat pointed down to the ground, he is looking out to the bleachers and takes 2-3 steps towards first. i love it.
it is sort of like millar's head duck and beginning trot to first after a walk -- made famous in 2004.
The force was off when the guy touched first so Mike tried the rundown route instead of sliding into a waiting tag.
re: Bay's dongs: ha, that's the Esaskian thing I mentioned once. I love it too. Of course, Esasky doing it like that may be all in my mind, but I think it was kinda similar.
I love the look on Bay's face when he really tags one. He's like "OOOOOHHH!!"
DP DP
I may as well get in on the Bay lovefest as well.
Fuck ya!
---
Anyway, yeah, I love Jay Bay!
I also love pirated MLB.TV!
Ish, I just saw the ad again, it is Letric shave. When they close up on his beard before it becomes a cartoon, it just squicks me!
Last season there was an ad for some toenail fungus treatment. A cartoon toe and fungus. The fungus lifted up the toenail to jump underneath it, and it just made me totally sick. I had to look away every time.
Tim, we have NESN on Rogers SportsNet tonight. Channel 74 in our area.
so nesn shows a 2-hour version of the game at midnight.
why not show the whole game? why cut it down?
what the fuck does nesn have slotted into the 2 AM spot that is so important?
Jacoby Vroom.
I think they're only allowed to show re-runs in 2 hours. More stupid MLB rules.
Eck on Ellsbury: "He's gonna steal bases no matter where he's hitting in the lineup."
That sounds gross, L (the fungus thing). Makes me puke in my mouth a little.
Woo, LBJ!
Also I've yet to purchase a TV so still streaming games! The slingbox is down though, going to check that tomorrow at my pops' place.
Maybe it's just the stance/swing with the high hands that reminds me of Vertigo Boy. And they're both right-handed white guys who came from the NL and hit many dongs for us in a year ending in 9. Here are the stances:
Bay.
Esasky.
There have been full replays of games on NESN. The difference is it'll say "Sox in 2" obviously for the 2 hour replay. The full replay will say "Double Play", both shown on the screen at the lower right.
Really? I thought they weren't allowed to re-b'cast full length games. Hmm.
tex 3-2

Wow, ton of empty seats there.
L it seems to me as if they don't edit them down at all.
I don't understand at all why MLB makes these rules. How does it make sense?
I'm still annoyed we're not there tonight. It's an easy 4-hr drive from our place - I really enjoyed it last year. Next year I hope.
Burnout throwing 21 pitches per inning thru 3.

CHB said they are down 10,000 per game.....
I liked the replays NESN used to show that were the last pitch of every at bat and resultant play. It was like the whole game in 20 or 30 mins.
It's hard to buy tickets to a baseball game when you're unemployed.
That might be Breakfast with the Red Sox. It's only one hour.

Geez, Tim you might as well just watch spotscenter
or sportscenter,
why are mlb such nazis about getting any and all 8-second clips of games removed from youtube?
they are idiots.
Yeah, I heard the Red Wings were hurting as well, trying to sell PLAYOFF seats. Wonder how the sales have been for the finals...
I would've enjoyed going down to a game or two there as well...damn school.
"It's hard to buy tickets to a baseball game when you're unemployed."
I never let it stop me!
Ish, I don't know, it must have something to do with ad revenues. I guess.
9c, don't you mean Basketball/Football-center?

They said GM couldn't pay for that sign in Center but the owner let them keep it there and also added the Ford and Chrysler sign...
My last comment was meant to be in sort of a Henny Youngman style. Not a "you assholes, buy tickets anyway!" way.
Haha Granderson. How many outs are there? lmao.
That was a DP?!?! Ha ha ha ha
9-4-3 on that? I looked down.
That doubleplay was Natinals-esque.
mlb did that: condensed games, last pitch of every AB, 20 minutes. they don't offer those anymore.
Can't count balls. Can't count outs.
All sports leagues are idiots. Shutting down streams of games and removing clips from the internet. Deny the fans the ability to watch/follow their team or relive kickass plays. Ugh.
WTF was granderson smoking there?
Maybe I didn't mean Henny Youngman. I just meant it was supposed to be, like, a joke. With a "hey-oh" at the end. Okay, done.
Or as they say in Canada, Sportscentre.
Which we like to pronounce sports-sentry.
Good evening, all.
We're getting a lot of luckily-timed double plays.
Whatever, I'll take it.
ooh, third missed pitch, in the fifth. Great ratio, NESN!
Jere, I'm glad you explained that one! :)
Hey Amy!
And Sportscentre totally > Sportscenter.
Hard to believe Drew is batting only .258. Seems to have hit the ball pretty well this year.
I can imagine it'd be weird and sort of risky to drive around the Detroit area in a foreign car these days. Any days but especially these days. But I wouldn't know.
"All sports leagues are idiots."
This does seem to be true. They create so many hurdles between the teams and their fans.
Eck did very well reading the Amica pitch zone promo. Yay!
hi amy
I see DiceK has run up his pitch count as usual. I have to say that when I heard he was pitching, I was not disappointed to miss a few innings. But not complaining---obviously the Houdini act is working tonight.
I just devoured a bowl of delicious strawberries.
And I posted this in honour of Amy (off-topic) and Ish (food).
LOL, Laura. Am I so predictably off topic? My mind just wanders while the rest of you are paying attention to announcers and ads.
MLB should just offer up every game there is for free. The dream is to go to any boxscore on retrosheet or BBRef, and there'd be a little square ON the page, and you could press play and watch the whole game. Games with no TV or pre-TV could have the radio call. Others could have photos. Mind you, this would require a new Internet.
I planted strawberries a few weeks ago. Just today I saw some miniscule leaves in that spot. It's either a coincidence, or they're finally coming up.
My dream used to be, to be able to do any business I needed to do 24 hrs a day, any day of the week, and to do all my shopping without ever going into a store. Now it's almost possible.
I looooove Jeff Suppan, ha
Well Amy, put it this way, you're always happy to follow any comment in any direction, and to fill in information as needed.
Speaking of food, I just finished eating a thin-crust BBQ chicken pizza made by UNO... BBQ type pizza sauce: Check. Cheese. Check. Very tasty grilled chicken: Check. Crispy thin-crust: Check.
At this point we have an amazing little pizza here. But as food manufacturers and restaurants always seem to go, they feel like they need to complicate it and bring down the quality by adding red onions. Because a BBQ chicken pizza without red onions is too simple, I guess.
I totally agree with the shopping without ever going into a store idea. I hate shopping, especially in malls. In fact, Harvey used to take the girls shopping when they were little because he knew how cranky it made me.
And there I go, talking about non-baseball matters!
We had a great thin-crust pizza last night, with garlic and black olives. Yum.
I love walking in grocery stores. I don't mind walking around in malls unless I'm stuck there waiting for someone else.
Unfortunately I live with shopaholics!
At least I could pick the black olives off. Onions are sneaky little devils.
It's good to know other women who hate shopping. I also hate shopping. I can't believe (and can't stand) how many people shop for recreation.
I was just at Modern (Theo's favorite of the New Haven pizza places) this weekend. Gorged my fucking face with pizza.
Man I will be glad when the next two weeks are over, these award presentations and other stuff is causing me to miss my sox games.
Unfortunately, my daughters love shopping. I think they have my mother's gene for that. Somehow it skipped right over me.
DiceK walks the leadoff batter. Argghh.
Others shop for therapy. They buy things they don't need to make themselves feel better. Or to give them a sense of purpose.
I sometimes feel like a freak of nature, a woman who hates shopping. And doesn't care about shoes.
I care about shoes. I care that they are COMFORTABLE. End of story. I cannot wear heels to save my life, and if I could wear sneakers or sandals every day, that would be fine with me.
Shopping gives me a headache. The internet has added years to my life by sparing me those headaches!
Throw strikes, asshole.
Try being a baseball fan who doesn't drink alcohol and doesn't eat meat.
And DiceK does it again. He sure irritates me.
This is absurd. Walking the 8-9 men, throwing a thousand pitches to them. If you want to give yourself a challenge, just plunk three, load the bases and pitch. GAH!!!!
I heard Dice once walked a man just for snorin' too loud.
Or just being a guy who doesn't like beer.
Amy, same here.
Jere, same idea.
One reason JoS is so good for me is knowing other progressive/liberal baseball fans. I often know one or the other but not both at once.
Try being a baseball fan who doesn't drink alcohol and doesn't eat meat.
Sounds like hell, honestly.
Much better.
How can you not like beer?
"I heard Dice once walked a man just for snorin' too loud."
LOL!!!!!!!
This is up there with brak brak. We are cracking up.
Try being a baseball fan who doesn't drink alcohol and doesn't eat meat.
What's wrong with alcohol? I mean besides the intoxication and carcinogenic properties.
"Sounds like hell, honestly."
I'm quite happy and healthy, thanks.
It's good to thread heavily during his starts. It distracts from the frustration.
"How can you not like beer?"
See?
It would be hell to Allan.
I can't imagine life without wine. I'd be very sad.
I've switched channels and put the game on the little TV. Stanley Cup final on the big TV now. Gah Dice-K.
Alcohol is not a carcinogen.
I live without meat, and I could live without alcohol, though I do enjoy the buzz and the taste. However, living without ice cream is unthinkable.
29 pitch inning.
dice toying with the tigers fans. walking the scrubs, nailing the hitters. we forget this is how he operates.
"How can you not like beer?"
See for me, it's the opposite. To each her own.
Black cherry with chocolate chip, is being dished up right now for me. mmmm
I love my meat. I can't imagine being a vegetarian. But I can understand it. I had thoughts when I sat down and had ribs, beef brisket and pulled pork in front of me at a BBQ joint last weekend.
Yes, I think without threads I would just not watch DiceK pitch. The radio might be easier to take. Not sure.
Alcohol is not a carcinogen.
WHO lists it as a Group 1 carcinogen.
I'm going to brew some apfelwein as soon as I get my new basement, though.
Jere, I thought you have never drunk alcohol at all. Which is a totally fine choice, but then, you wouldn't know if you liked it or not. Your choice not to drink would not be because you don't like it, but based on something else, I assume.
Sounds good, S1C. I had something called Lobster Tracks tonight---vanilla ice cream with chunks of chocolate and caramel. Somehow the caramel was red (probably a carcinogen there), and since I am on the Cape, they called it Lobster Tracks. Kosher Lobster Tracks. :)
I disagree with WHO on that, as do many, many doctors. The jury is still out on that one, IMO.
