G120: Red Sox 8, Blue Jays 1

Red Sox - 001 320 110 - 8 10 0
Blue Jays - 100 000 000 - 1 3 3
Three games of productive batting practice before we start a real series against the Yankees!

Lester (8-3-1-2-5, 105) allowed a single, double and walk to the first three Toronto hitters in the first inning. A GIDP scored a run, but Lester was on for the rest of his evening, allowing only one additional hit. Those first two Jays hitters were the only Jays to touch second base.

J.D. Drew was the hitting star for the Sox, going 4-for-4 with two home runs, three RBI and three runs scored. Victor Martinez hit a moon shot dong in the seventh.

The Jays also made some very stupid plays in the field. One of the their errors was by Cecil in the fourth inning. Jason Bay was on first. After ball 2 to David Ortiz, catcher Rod Barajas threw the ball back to Cecil. It glanced off his glove and rolled towards shortstop. Cecil went and got it, looked at it, and casually tossed it away. Time had not been called, however, so it was a two-base error (the ball went into the 3B dugout) and Bay jogged to third.
Example
Jon Lester (3.71, 127 ERA+) / Brett Cecil (4.35, 100 ERA+)

Terry Francona loves this part of the season, as long as his team is in contention:
[C]oming to the ballpark this time of year, being nervous, is an unbelievable feeling. When I was in Philadelphia, ... you get to September and ... we're out there trying to tell ourselves we're going to try to win today and be the spoiler. You know what? [Expletive] that. That's not that much fun.
Boston is 1 GA of Texas in the Wild Card. ... (You didn't go jump off any tall buildings like the mediots told you to do on Sunday, did you?)

Twins/Rangers at 8. The Yankees are off.

Castig talking about the Mets releasing Livan Hernandez to make room for Billy Wagner...

"They say Hernandez is 34 years old..." And then Castig just burst out laughing.

Obie: "Yeah, he was probably 34 when he broke in."

Fragging sLugo - has a 134 ops+ at stl.

more proof that the al east is tough for pitchers and hitters alike....

Drew's 2007 campaign... $400K regular season performance.

$14 million dollar homerun in the ALCS!!!

Worth every penny.

allan said...

i'd be surprised if jere used it.

34????he has to at least be as old as Redsock....

"A dandy by Lester" Music to my ears.

Zenslinger said...

Lot of line drive outs tonight in addition to the fireworks.

Amy said...

Fusionmouse, I guess VM did say he likes the break from catching, so you might be right about them rotating the two. But he sure is worth more on offense. Sad to say, I think Tek is done as a hitter. And catching Wake? I think there is a reason he never did that.

fusionmouse said...

Isn't Hernadez a spokesman for Depends?

Dany, and huge by keeping the bullpen rested...

laura k said...

I saw that - commented on it, too. :)

Oh. Maybe I wasn't around for the whole thread. Often am not.

It was a next-day comment - since I was at the game and got home late. You can go check it out if you like.

s1c said...

Everybody assumes Tek can't catch Wake, but I would point out, just go back to '04 vs MFY's and Tek did catch Wake.

Gonzo!!!

allan said...

SEABASS!!!

Amy said...

That was cute...Lowell to Gonzalez to Youk!

allan said...

tabler: "mike lowell with some good range at third base, deflects it to gonzalez....."

Patrick said...

I think JV has a 3M player option for next year, but I would love to see this be his last year with us.

fusionmouse said...

Oh how I've missed watching Alex at short!! Smooooooth!

Benjamin said...

5-6-3 single play?

Unknown said...

"Fragging sLugo - has a 134 ops+ at stl."

Mainly because he was 8 for 14 with a homer, two doubles and two triples in his first three games with the Cardinals

Since then he's slugging under .400 and OPSing under .700

laura k said...

Just to clarify (did someone say Jere?), I know Nancy is usually used as a pejorative. I was hoping the guy was not using it that way and didn't want to jump, just in case.

Amy said...

So maybe I can eat my words about Gonzalez. I'd be glad to.

As for Tek catching Wake, I'd like to say he can catch anyone, but I have to believe he'd prefer not catching Wake or vice versa or it might have happened more often.

Drew again!! OMG!

who is JV? and why are you worried bout next year in the middle of a playoff race?

Unknown said...

Another quick inning

I'd leave him in for the 8th

fusionmouse said...

With some practice, I'm sure Tek could catch Wake.

And then he'd have a great excuse for not throwing any runners out!

ON FIRE!

Patrick said...

JV= Varitek.

Cuz im a worry wart.

drew can't finish the game -- boooooooooooooooooooo -- trade his brittle ass.

JV= Varitek

I can't believe i didn't figure that out....what a friggin moron I am...

Amy said...

And I was talking about this year, saying I think this is a better lineup and that VMart may inherit Tek's position sooner rather than later. I was not thinking about next year.

Amy said...

9c, at least you knew what a dong cycle was.

Patrick said...

Joe and Dave would love us to believe that the blue jays are having a losing season because of lack of intensity and grit.

It's an alchemy of personalities.

laura k said...

The only reason I want Tek to play is so I can use his new nickname, the Cactus.

Rob said...

Heh. Skydome wave.

allan said...

having a losing season because of lack of intensity and grit.

and by intensity and grit, they mean hitting and pitching.

Rob said...

And yet, there is no mention of Cactus in the glossary. :>)

laura k said...

Intensity & Grit vs. Mystique & Aura! Who wins??

allan said...

And yet, there is no mention of Cactus in the glossary. :>)

I have a note scribbled on a piece of paper from a couple of days ago to do it. I swear!

laura k said...

Cactus hasn't caught on yet. But as soon as I saw it the other night, I loved it.

Who was it, Pepe? Meuniermr (sp?)?

Patrick said...

LOL, L! Mystique and aura might scare you more than intensity, but that's why we play the games.

Clearly this game is Intensity and Grit vs. Moping and indifference.

allan said...

he hasn't really played at all. it would be a case of a nickname going into the glossary before we start using it. (if i added it, that is)

Rob said...

What team would have SOUL and PASSION?

s1c said...

The other day WEEI was ripping JD because HH was pinch running. It was a couple of hours before someone pointed out that JD was already in the game at that time because he had started.

Amy said...

Yeah, I don't think I will call Tek Cactus. It hurts too much.

allan said...

and that is why i'd never listen to weei if i had the opportunity.

buffy chatting about bozo the clown -- they are totally ignoring the game.

laura k said...

Buffyvision's not even trying to talk about the game anymore.

I was part of a demo crew last winter. We'd go into flooded houses and tear up carpet, sheet rock, floor boards, and discard all the ruined stuff.

Amy said...

All those people are there in your basement? At 9:40? Those Canadians have quite a work ethic!

fusionmouse said...

Damn... twinkies fail to score. Creamless :(

allan said...

cabrera coming in.

Patrick said...

mmmmmmm, cream!

laura k said...

Ha ha, no, all those people weren't there tonight. LL, Son of LL, Girlfriend of Son of LL, and contractor came over tonight at 9:00.

The rest have been in and out since the flood.

I'm so glad our dogs love people. It makes life easier (since we had a dog who was afraid of strangers and had to be kept away).

Patrick said...

cabrera coming in.

everyone [who matters] will be fresh for the series tomorrow.

laura k said...

Patrick, we saw those guys last week. In our basement and all over our neighbourhood.

Thanks for your next day comment on Ish's, Laura.

I just have to laugh at all those fools who jumped off the bridge last week.

Bring your brooms back to Fenway!

Rob said...

Welp, we have more assholes to sweep starting tomorrow.

Good night!

Amy said...

Still, that's a lot of commotion at that hour! Your dogs may like it, but I would hate it.

allan said...

Tim sent a text to Laura:

"water!"

Amy said...

I have my broom and my rose-colored glasses ready for the weekend.

I hope to get to see some of the game tomorrow. Depends on what time we get to the cottage. I hope this storm system doesn't screw up the games this weekend.

allan said...

I really hope work is quiet tomorrow night, so I can enjoy Remy's return. I've really missed him.

nixon33 said...

Sucks I won;t be able to see Remy's return. Forced to listen to the Kaygasm. ugh...

9casey said...

is that weather in Toronto gonna keep the Red Sox there a little longer?

L was watching the news. Massive flooding around the area, many tornadoes, 120 homes destroyed, people in shelters, etc.

Late night comment.
Warthogs.......no, wait.....what the hell is their name? - Dash! That's it - the fucking Dash! win at historic Ernie Shore Field tonight.
Most importantly - beers were $2.
Yay!
And, thans to an incredible resurgance, there were open bars downtown, with people IN them. And there was more BEER!
And......nevermind.
I believe I asked yesterday or the day before "when was the last time we used the term "on-fire" regarding Drew, with a bit of a sigh afterward.
Question answered tonight. Hope it's a trend :)

*yawn*

Still tired the morning after (didn't drink either!) - what an long, strange trip that was.

Driving there, same traffic as usual but this time we decided to just drive in since there were 3 of us and the train would've been like $50 for all of us. That and we couldn't find a local LCBO to buy some beers for the train...we did find a Bulk Barn though, and bought bags of peanuts/candy for the game.

Ate a bunch on the way and felt sugar buzzed. Traffic was good until we got into Toronto. The gardiner was backed up to hell due to some accident, and as we were stuck in traffic a police motorcade from Montreal went by in the left shoulder. All this while we were listening to the tornado reports and warnings on the radio. Then I looked in my rearview mirror and darkness was approaching. We finally got past the accident as Jacoby was stepping into the batters box, and as we got off the highway and under the bridges everything became dark.

Then the rains came. Oh my god. I thought it was the apocalypse. After a horrendous 0.5 km drive to the parking garage, we get upstairs to the bar to wait out the storm and watch the game while having a couple pints. Of course the satellite's down, so we actually cab it the one block to the box office so Steph can buy a ticket. We buy our tickets and enter via the closest possible entrance.

We ended up getting there at the end of the first, so didn't miss much.

It was like a fucking rainforest in there, must've been like 85 degrees for the first few innings. Then they opened a door on the roof and it was heavenly. Then the roof opened, and it was even better, even through it was drizzling a bit. This entire thing just felt weird to me though. Then we scored 8 times and romped the fucking shitstains. Back to reality. I smiled. We laughed. We won.

Fin.

allan said...

Excellent recap! Glad you saw a romp after Tuesday's annoying nailbiter.

We went out to dinner before the game and the rain hit on our way home. It was next to impossible to see anything -- just follow the lights of the car in front of us and hope he knows where the proper lane on the road is.

Rob said...

And where are those storms heading next?

Here!

In fact, they might fuck around with the game tonight at Fenway. Wouldn't that be ironic.

tim said...

Good luck! I was thinking about your lightning pics yesterday - there were definitely some sweet photo opportunities!

Amy said...

Great recap, Tim! I wondered why they decided to open the roof, given the weather.

Also, imagine being able to walk up to the box office and buy a ticket for that night's game, just like that.

laura k said...

Oh yeah, I mentioned how hot and humid it gets in there w/ the dome closed. I knew they must have opened it to let people breathe and get a breeze.

The gardiner was backed up to hell due to some accident, and as we were stuck in traffic a police motorcade from Montreal went by in the left shoulder.

I saw that on TV, I was wondering WTH it was!

The storms here were amazing. 120 houses were destroyed by tornadoes (or maybe torandoes). Emergency shelters were opened, 750,000 homes without power - a lot for Canada. Amazingly, only one person was killed. Bad, but nowhere as bad as might be expected.
