Yankees - 112 210 010 - 8 10 2Josh Beckett (8-9-8-0-5, 120) allowed a career-high five home runs, including one to Derek Jeter on his first pitch of the night.
Red Sox - 020 101 000 - 4 9 0
He is the 3rd Red Sox pitcher since 1954 to allow at least five dongs in a game. The other two are Dennis Eckersley (5 on July 1, 1979 at the Yankees) and Tim Wakefield (5 on September 15, 1996 against the White Sox and 6 on August 8, 2004 at the Tigers).
Fun facts from SoSH's "What the holy hell is wrong with Beckett?" thread:
He was scored upon in 10 straight innings before finally getting a scoreless one tonight.CC Sabathia (3.58, 125 ERA+) / Josh Beckett (3.38, 140 ERA+)
He has allowed 9 home runs in his last 12 innings.
Beckett had allowed 7 earned runs at Fenway since May 23 -- and seven in 4.2 tonight.
A victory would put Boston 5.5 GB with 39 games to play, including three in New York in late September.
It is the first time the two pitchers have met since 2007 ALCS 5, when Sabathia was with Cleveland. (They also met in Game 1.) Beckett and Boston won both of those games.
2009 Beckett vs YankeesJed Lowrie will begin a rehab assignment with Pawtucket on Monday.

David Ortiz's home run on Saturday gave him eight consecutive 20-home run seasons. He's the sixth Red Sox player to have seven 20-home run seasons, joining Ted Williams (16), Dwight Evans (11), Jim Rice (11), Manny Ramirez (8) and Carl Yastrzemski (8).
Greg Montalbano was drafted by the Red Sox in 1999 and spent four years in the minor leagues. He died on August 21 of testicular cancer at age 31. Kevin Youkilis, who played in the minors with Montalbano, had "GM" inscribed on his cap yesterday.

FUCK IT ALL
Number 5!!
This is stupid.
Well, Beckett fell off that train again. Sheeet.
I think it is the religious tone of GBA that bothers me the most. Why should God bless America as opposed to all places and people?
Because it's the land that he loves. Isn't it obvious?
BTW, being Israeli, I hate the whole "chosen people" idea so much.
And there's that fifth one... Beckett just stumbled off the tracks. Now he's just an aimless hobo.
I thought B was F.
Interesting.
Just to play devil's advocate - when we say a prayer to bless a meal, we are not implying that we wouldn't want our children or our homes to be blessed. It just happens to be a prayer for food.
Shit!
It is very true though, that a lot of people singing it take it to mean that - Bless us and screw everyone else. I blame them, not the song.
Okay, now I get why my posts are delayed. I am watching on TV and listening on the radio. We paused the TV to sync it with the radio so I'm a few seconds behind.
John, did you think Benjamin was actually Amalie B? Or her sister?
I am so sorry, not that there's anything wrong with being a guy. Or not being a guy.
Hang in there, amy, l-girl, mrs gotribe, etc
I think the song is very clearly asking "God" to bless one place above others. But I guess it doesn't matter if the song does it or not - the song is used that way.
Having said all that - I NEVER stand for it, except for the fact that it usually means we're getting close to last call and I'm heading for a beer.
I'm going to go bury my head under a ten cord pile of wood in the cellar. See you all next April!
benjamin has used 3 names here, though
Time for an epic smack down.
Runs.
GBA always makes me think of Kate Smith and some really really boring tv of my youth....
FTR, I have no feelings either way about the gender balance on JoS.
3 names but 1 sheep
Interesting point, SoSock, though I think the blessings over food and wine are more about thanking God for the food and wine. Though people do ask God to bless their children, so that's analogous to the song. But the song somehow makes it seem like America deserves a special blessing. All that stand beside her and guide her stuff. Against what?
blue light
sweat
thunder
rx
etc.
etc.
etc.
Having said all that - I NEVER stand for it,
Yay SoSock
It also makes me thing of MFYankee Stadium too....
Against what?
Depending on the era: commies, jews, hippies, terrorists, whatever.
Doesn't matter that a Jewish person wrote it. White Christmas, etc.
Here I am listening on radio, and right behind me Allan has the game on his computer.
Next up sex, and then on to politics.
John, I don't think anyone was disturbed by your comment, so don't go away!
I obviously don't really care about gender balance here or I would have left long ago. But it is nice to know that there are other women who are devoted sports fans. Growing up when I did, it was just not as accepted for girls to be into sports, so perhaps I still have that hang-up that it's a boy's thing.
(And there I go, acting old again. Uh oh.)
Runner on
Time for some dongs
Fair ball!
Patrick, I thought I'd already handled sex for tonight--or gender anyway.
:)
Then there was MDC with his hand down his pants - and all those cialis jokes
That's funny, JohnGF. We met Benjamin at JOS1. Definitely a guy.
I must've missed the pantycheck.
I hadn't much intention of leaving, amy--but I am getting a nice pile of wood in the cellar to hide under in case I say anything really stupid later on.
Yeah, dongs are always covered here at JoS.
Take that as you will.
As long as I'm not around a bunch of wingnuts, I'm happy.
theo looks like he is merely tolerating this game.
LOL, Benjamin. Well, you were wearing a tie, goddammit!
I must've missed the pantycheck.
Let's just say you present as male and leave it at that.
Just to clarify - I was just playing DA, something I do a lot. I too roll my eyes and carry on as before when they play it at historic Ernie Shore Field. If anyone glares at me for daring to talk during their "moment" I just walk somewhere else. (One of the advantages of watching a game there - you can do that......easily)
Why did Miller act like that was a great catch? ARGGH
theo looks like he is merely tolerating this game.
I know how he feels.
Women can wear ties. You should try it the next time you find you have too much blood circulation to the brain.
Hey wait - did JFG say he was getting wood?
time to lose one, mole
oops - JGF, not JFG.
I think that's coffee
Women can wear ties, but most of us realize how silly they are. Though my father claims they keep him warm in winter.
Why does ESPN keep showing Bot?
Wow, Steve Phillips talking about dealing Bot in the offseason. Which actually makes sense, in my eyes. I agree with Steve Phillips! Oh no...
This is literal wood, sosock! Don't even go there!
I am not liking the way this is going. Better be a walkoff.
I have a female lawyer friend who wears a tie to work every day.
damn
damn
damn
Many of my students think of me as JFG and I answer to it if they smile.
saito in
I agree with Steve Phillips! Oh no...
No Ofer, he agrees with you.
That's what Allan tells me when I am aghast that I agree w/ a conservative columnist: they just got it right this once, and agree with me.
I refused to wear those silly ties. I also hated suits. Fortunately, I don't need to wear either in my job.
I am not a happy camper.
Maybe I need a "F" list
Can we pinch hit Papi for Tek?
Beckett: 8-9-8-0-5, 120
No walks - yay!
In her case it's not silly. She looks really cool and funky in it. Jeans and a man's shirt & tie, and she has long hair that she wears down. A nice look.
"I refused to wear those silly ties. I also hated suits. Fortunately, I don't need to wear either in my job."
I get to lie around in any old clothes to do my online classes.
Allan, the glass half full type.
Allan, the glass half full type.
ha ha ha that's a good one
yep, oscar the optimist
That's different--she is not conforming to the uniform. When I was in practice, many women wore suits and those string ties with frilly shirts---a sort of watered down female version of a suit and tie.
I've said time and again that I wouldn't accept a job that requires a suit and tie, no matter how good or how much money was involved. Of course, that's bullshit, but saying it won't hurt.
l-girl's mirthless ha ha ha sounds like my wife's in similar situation
someone at espn checks b-ref and finds josh is 4th sox pitcher since 1954 to allow 5 HR in a game.
Who were the other three who gave up 5 HRs?
Yes, she's definitely not conforming. This is the lawyer who represents the war resisters.
Wake against Tampa was one. I think it was Tampa, before they became the FKR.
I hate those frilly shirts. What were they thinking.
Sito looking better than usual
B-Ref tells me:

Eck on July 1, 1979 at MFY
and
Wake on September 15, 1996 vs CWS
6
Wake on August 8, 2004 at Det
I misread your original post, L, and thought the woman worked at the firm where you work. I was wondering how she could get away with jeans at a big law firm. I was beginning to think Canada really is pretty cool!
link
Wake twice. Those knuckleballs either are mystifying or easy targets.
You know, I don't know what lawyers wear to work here - I only see them on weekends. I imagine it's pretty casual, but not jeans.
They were thinking, "Gee, we need a uniform like the men have, but not the same as the men have." I am sure it was some sadist in the fashion industry who came up with it.
and look - tek did not catch any of those 3 games!
He actually - "the great rivera"
puke
fruitbat?
RUNS!
Who's coming up?
Lilly Tomlin had a good routine about those shirts.
Arcade Fire opening the inning on the radio.
Playoff Assassin Girardi?
my typing sux tonite.
wine?
"Sito looking better than usual"
He has a 2.80 ERA
He's allowed two earned runs in 14.1 innings since the ASB
He always says, "The Great Rivera."
We need one of those 5-run innings off of Fruitbat. It's time that happened again.
No way Tek is coming to bat if Drew gets on, right?
Alright! BB
pretty freaking great, eh miller?
Rivera not getting the patented Rivera Strike Zone
Oh, yeah, the whole "it's really hard for a closer to close a 4-run lead game" thing. Gotta love it.
Yup, he says it every time.
That Drew! He sure can leave that bat on his shoulder.
And the great Rivera walked the leadoff man, and Miller backs off and says, Well, it's not a save, so closers aren't usually as effective when it is not a save.
Guess Tek is in there.
Surprise us, San Pedro.

I want a Molina brother. He could help me with homework, and protect me from bullies.
I'm glad I'm not listening to those clowns.
Where is Papi? No reason Tek should be batting.
"He always says, "The Great Rivera."
Makes him sound like some cheesy magician
Rivera not getting the patented Rivera Strike Zone
There it is.
Hmm, that wasn't even in the strike zone.
now he's getting it.
fucker
He could help me with homework, and protect me from bullies.
Unless they were chasing you.
You can't blame Tek for not swinging at an obvious ball.
Nay, L. I just marvel at Drew's god given gift: leaving the bat on his shoulder.
Less men would've taken it off, but not Jay Dee.
Kactus! Even I had to laugh!
Where is Papi? No reason Tek should be batting.
Poor girl, Tek had already K'd when this posted.
Unless they were chasing you.
ahahaha!
Even Joe Morgan was amusing with "that pitch to Tek caught...some part of the catcher's glove"
That pitch was actually closer to the plate than the one Tek K'ed on.
no fucking sasahe pls
Poor girl, Tek had already K'd when this posted.
Well, if I don't have NESN I usually get the radio sound and have a slight delay on the TV. I guess I'll have to give that up if I'm going to continue posting here.
All right, a two out rally---our specialty.
Since when is the Wild Card a division?
Moron
bah
fucking clean fucking water
Ugh
And that's the game. Well, at least they did not get a sweep or a shut out.
Fuck and fuck.
booo
good night all
see you tomw
Yuck
Good night.
cool clear water
Good night, everyone. Let's hope for better luck in the next series.
Alas.
runs scored that series: 28-29
Thank the heavens for Junichi Tazawa is all I have to say.
Another sweep by these assholes would have been awful.
This wasn't the worst loss of the season, but I think it might be the most annoying one
