G126: Red Sox 3, White Sox 2

White Sox - 100 000 010 - 2 7 0
Red Sox - 010 001 001 - 3 7 1
BIG PAPI Walkoff HR!

Wakefield was brilliant (7-6-1-1-3, 94) and David Ortiz hit two home runs! The game-winning blast was clubbed down the right field line, plenty high and deep enough, and it stayed fair -- his first walkoff dong since September 12, 2007.

Boston's other slugger -- Alex Gonzalez -- hit a solo shot in the sixth.

And Victor Martinez's night of dealing with the knuckleball was a complete non-event. It was never an issue. ... Plus, 21 of Wakefield's first 22 pitches (and 27 of 30) were strikes.

The Yankees beat the Rangers 9-2, so Boston stays 6 GB in the East. The Rangers fell 2.5 GB Boston in the Wild Card. The Blue Jays scored twice in the bottom of the ninth to beat the Rays 3-2 and drop Tampa 4 GB in the WC.
Example
Gavin Floyd (3.98, 118 ERA+) / Tim Wakefield (4.31, 110 ERA+)

Wakefield returns from the DL (lower back and left calf) for his first start since July 8. His pitches shall float like a butterfly while the Red Sox bats sting like a bee. A big fookin' nine-stinger stabbin' bee. Well, maybe an eight-stinger bee, since Seabass will be in there.

Brave Victor Martinez will be behind the plate:
I'm really looking forward to it. I've had a chance to catch four or five of his [bullpen sessions]. ... I'm pretty excited. ... You don't have to look pretty catching it. You just have to make sure that you catch it.
Since Wakefield's mobility in somewhat uncertain, Tito will go with strong gloves at the corners: Kotchman 1B and Yook 3B, with Tiz DHing.
Example
Also: Rangers (Holland)/Yankees (Pettitte) at 7 PM.

Did Wake field AJ's bunt?

Unknown said...

Alright, only one run, not too bad

11 pitches - all strikes

allan said...

lots of swings and misses though. that looked good.

the bats will be there

Edward Lee said...

Anybody else think Konerko's triple was going to be a pop-up off the bat? There must be a jetstream localized just above the ballpark or something.

Iridescence said...

It did carry farther than it looked like it would

Unknown said...

That inning went too quickly

Iridescence said...

"son dad and some other persons make a fucktrain"

i *really* don't want to know what this person was searching for.

allan said...

was not a bunt, though play went 3-4

s1c said...

If the wind is blowing to center that is when Wake's knuckler, really knuckles.

Of course MLB has it as a 12 mph wind W.

allan said...

15 pitches, 15 strikes

s1c said...

As for the search - at least nuns weren't involved.

allan said...

nesn had the wind at 10 mph to RF

Wait...so this is a search string that yielded JoS as a result?

s1c said...

If you look how the park is situated, a wind from the west will blow to the triangle/corner of the bullpen.

allan said...

jos is the #2 and #7 response to that search.

3 balls in 30 pitches, that's insane

Unknown said...

Fucking Passedballa dong, 3-0 MFY

Zenslinger said...

I have resolved my issues and am rooting for the Yankees as long as they're playing the Rangers or Rays.

Maybe I should revise that. I'm not rooting for them. But I am happy for them to win.

It seems like there's a difference.

Rooting for the MFYs is just a manifestation of your Stockholm syndrome. It's more than a little sad, imho.

Unknown said...

I need to stop wondering away from GDGD, I keep missing us scoring.

Anyway: PAPI!!

allan said...

since we will win tonight, i shall root for texas.

Iridescence said...

Big Papi and other Red Sox persons make a dong train

Unknown said...

As long as it's a slugfest and both Texas and New York have to burn up their bullpens, I'm happy.

Iridescence said...

Texas is Dubiyas's old team. They're only slightly below the MFY on my shit list anyway.

Edward Lee said...

I have resolved my issues and am rooting for the Yankees as long as they're playing the Rangers or Rays.

I'm cool with the Yankees taking the division and going up against Justin Verlander and Edwin Jackson 3-4 times in 5 games while Boston whales on the Angels.

I just said I wasn't rooting for them!

Stockholm syndrome...hm. I'd rather be in first place than second, but I'm not sure it's that severe. Clever of you to make the comparison, though.

allan said...

I'm cool with the Yankees taking the division ...

This seems worse than any racist or sexist comment.....

Sorry, double post.

C'mon, Toronto. Bases loaded vs. Kazmir...run(s) already!

Iridescence said...

The Jays are leading the league in LOBotomies unfortunately.

allan said...

Zenslinger said...

Damn, DP train is coming.

Hah, there's another porny phrase for Google:

DP Train!

Iridescence said...

I would rather the Sox take the division for home field advantage. I think having HFA in 2 series is bigger than playing the Angels instead of the Tigers.

Unknown said...

DP, nice

allan said...

people can actually think what they want, i hope i did not scare edward off. :>)

Benjamin said...

Since rooting at home in front of the computer or tv has no impact on the result, why debase yourself? It profits a man nothing to give his soul for the whole world, but for the Toilet?

You're going to have to live with the result regardless. No need to root one way or another.

A Conformer said...

C'mon, Toronto. Bases loaded vs. Kazmir...run(s) already!

No, go Rays! I want the MFY in third place and at home in October...

(I am, of course, aware that that is borderline insanity).

Iridescence said...

Don't know how he'd expect a different reaction to that comment from Red Sox fans.

Benjamin said...

Wake's getting shitty run support even with a real catcher in the lineup.

allan said...

GIDDAMN IT

Iridescence said...

Edward Lee said...

Hey, I was rooting for the Yankees to beat the Indians in 2007 as well, because I thought they were clearly the worse team. Didn't turn out that way, but having money on the Indians (1.8:1 dogs) was nice.

And the stolen base ends up not mattering at all

Let's get some runs

Patrick said...

Wow, I didn't realize I missed Wakefield, but it is great to have him back.

Patrick said...

I appreciate him all the more because of Penny and Smoltz.

Iridescence said...

LOL "fastest fastball in the fifth inning" 67 MPH
Gotta love Wake.

Benjamin said...

All today's fans care about is the money.

Fucking fans these days. Back in my day, we didn't have beer: we drank choleric water and we LIKED it. And don't get me started on team apparel. When we wanted a red jersey, we wore the shirt we wore while tending to our hemorrhagic comrades.

About time you woke up and realized the greatness of Wake and decided to endorse his cy young award.

Patrick said...

Thank goodness that stayed in the park.

Amy said...

Nice to have Remy back also. Feels like things are back to normal with Remy and Wakefield back.

allan said...

the bit with remy doing a rehab to read some promos is funny.

remy saying nah, the rehab guy has to buy dinner for the team and he's too cheap to do that!

allan said...

victor to cactus: "knuckleball -- what's the fuckin' big deal?"

Unknown said...

Wake's looking pretty damn good so far

Benjamin said...

Since Gonzalez and Wagner have their logjam at uniform #13 and Masterson's left, Gonzalez should get 6-3.

Iridescence said...

I read somewhere that if you take salary into account you could make a case for Wake as Red Sox MVP many years. It wasn't a totally far out argument either.

A Conformer said...

Hahaha, WS announcer just said the Sox' outfield has good arms all around...
He's right. Except for LBJ and Bay.

Wake and V-Mart making the infinite Timmeh option a no brainer for next year.

Amy said...

He may be my new favorite SS.

s1c said...

Bay doesn't have a terrible arm, it is rated above average last defensive I've seen.

Iridescence said...

pleasantly surprised at Sea Bass's not completely horrible offense.

Unknown said...

"Bay doesn't have a terrible arm, it is rated above average last defensive I've seen."

He has 12 outfield assists this season, definitely not a terrible arm

Patrick said...

Regardless of how good or bad things seem, at least we're not the Mets. What a sad, sad club.

allan said...

wow - that white sox trainer is a major pile of goo. guy could lose 70 pounds. there's a guy i wanna take health advice from.

Iridescence said...

I don't hate the Mets bu their fans need to quit whining. Try being a Royals fan if you want a truly hopeless team.

Unknown said...

Alright, time for a two-run Blue Light Special

allan said...

now if the mets' cloud of suck can move a bit north-west....

Edward Lee said...

I read somewhere that if you take salary into account you could make a case for Wake as Red Sox MVP many years. It wasn't a totally far out argument either.

Fangraphs calculates WAR (wins above replacement) for players and converts that to dollars; Wakefield's figures are here.

Wakefield provides quite a bit of value over his salary, maybe the most on the team if you throw out the cost-controlled guys.

Rob said...

Good evening, Thread. Good one we've got going. Pleasantly surprised by Wake's outing so far.

allan said...

tizzle squeeze???

Amy said...

The Mets really are a sad story. I feel for the many Mets fans in my extended family

Patrick said...

Talking about value per dollar, I think Lester is far and away the best deal for this team.

Edward Lee said...

tizzle squeeze???

IIRC he bunted for a clean base hit against the Cards in 2004. That was awesome.

allan said...

i have read crazy things about that fangraphs $ formula, like (not actual example) nick green being worth $14 mil. (no idea how it works, tho)

Rob said...

If Nick Green is worth $14 mil, I should be worth a cool $500,000 for just being me.

Edward Lee said...

As awesome as Nick Green is, he only weighs in at $1.2 million for this season, and actually took money off the table in 2006 and 2007.

Unknown said...

Green is worth $1.2 million this season, supposedly.

He somehow managed to have a negative $2.3M value in 2006.

Unknown said...

All right, I'm starting to get creeped out by how frequently I have nearly the exact same thing to say as other threaders.

Patrick said...

Oh god. That radio telethon is starting soon.

Amy said...

Ish, you are worth far more than that. Maybe not to a baseball team, but in general!

allan said...

wake - 94 thru 7.

allan said...

ish hosts other threads -- but is that really worth a half-mil?

i'd say $20 K tops. it's only 5-6 games a year.

Unknown said...

Former Red Sox prospect David Murphy dong off of Pettitte, 4-2 MFY.

Unknown said...

Alright, time to start piling up the insurance runs.

allan said...

Actually, the blog generates no money whatsoever.

Sorry, ish, you get nada.

Iridescence said...

73 strikes for Wake. out of 94 pitches. Wow.

Rob said...

FAIL. But putting other things that I do in my life into consideration... If Green should get $14 mil I should get .5mil.

Rob said...

My ego enough is worth a couple mil.

Iridescence said...

Stolen BAYse nice.

allan said...

Le steal.

Unknown said...

Thunder on wheels!

Amy said...

Go for it, Ish. Go for the full million!

Iridescence said...

Where do you get Green at $14 mil? FG has him 0.2 WAR this year

allan said...

actually, we are in new mexico for a week very soon. ish may earn his imaginary money after all.

allan said...

i made it up (and said so)

Iridescence said...

I agree their projections sometimes seem a little off but usually not THAT bad :)

Patrick said...

It says Wells has been worth -3 million so far this year.

Talk about an unforgivable contract.

s1c said...

i made it up (and said so)

Who do you think you are, CHB?

allan said...

there was a sosh discussion about drew and his contract. posters named a few people i did not recognize as being "worth" 14-16 mil. but again, i know nothing about the stat.

ram ram a comin' in

wake = superb

Rob said...

Time for some hot Ram-Ram action.

Benjamin said...

Not that kind of action.

Iridescence said...

damn

Patrick said...

I've been noticing this blatant jeter/yankees love in an unexpected place: The MLB highlights in the MLB audio.

Take a look now if you have it up. One of the highlights is "Jeter's golden glove". The "HIGHLIGHT" is a routine double play. ROUTINE!

I noticed it a lot during the sox/yanks series, but it wasn't blatant enough to point out.

s1c said...

Time for some hot Ram-Ram action

It is not april or may any more.

Unknown said...

Well...there goes Wake's win.

Pedro, wtf?

allan said...

that wells deal was among the very worst contract in baseball before the ink was dry.

allan said...

yo, assassin, time for action!

Unknown said...

Ugh, Pedro, don't fuck this up

Edward Lee said...

I believe Scott Podsednik should be tested immediately after the game. He's never hit a ball that far in his life.

s1c said...

Now, lets get a dp and get the bats going!!!

Iridescence said...

They really love defense on FG. Guys like Franklin Guitierrez and Adrian Beltre get rated very highly there. Depends how much you buy into their defensive stats. I personally don't think they're as accurate as offensive stats yet.

Unknown said...

Well, that makes the DP a hell of a lot more difficult

allan said...

WSJ in the Skydome! 2-0 Rays

Unknown said...

Alright, one more out

Do not let Beckham score

Unknown said...

Ooh, Bard time

Unknown said...

Franklin Guitierrez is really, really good. Beltre seems very good, but I'm not sure how much of a difference a 3rd baseman can make vs. what an outfielder can make. I mean, Mike Lowell is a great third baseman, but he doesn't really have all that much range and really hasn't ever. He's just got great instincts, a strong, accurate arm, and soft hands. So if you can play a brilliant 3rd base without great range, then you're not really responsible for that much territory, right?

But yeah, FG spits out some strange stuff. It's got Teixeira as below average and Jeter as above, when it seems like, watching them play, a lot of the plays Jeter's been making have been Teixeira digging out rushed throws. I don't know, maybe I'm wrong, but I don't have a lot of faith in advanced defensive stats.

What's up everybody?

Edward Lee said...

I was headed to Charlotte to see Hot Tuna when I got a call saying the show had been cancelled.
Bummer.
Hope it's just tonight. They're in Chapel Hill next week, so we're shooting for that now.

Check out "Live at Sweetwater" sometime.

I so stoked about Papi's walk-off. I tried to BR the last time he did that but I'm not a paid subscriber and couldn't figure out to get it without being one. Probably could be done but would take a little more imagination than I have right now.
