G129: Red Sox 3, Blue Jays 2

Blue Jays - 000 000 002 - 2 5 1
Red Sox - 100 002 00x - 3 10 0
Buchholz (8.1-3-1-2-9, 107) was masterful, but was pulled after giving up a leadoff single and a line out in the ninth.

Hideki Ojakima -- facing two lefties, Adam Lind and Lyle Overbay -- allowed an RBI double (poof, there went the shutout) and an RBI single in only four pitches. Suddenly, Toronto had the tying run at first with only one out. Terry Francona went to Jonathan Papelbon, who retired Vernon Wells on a first-pitch foul pop-out to catcher, then got Kevin Millar to pop to third.

The Sox wasted a ton of scoring opportunities -- Romero (5.1-7-3-4-5, 116) was lucky he wasn't trailing 6- or 7-0 after three innings. Jacoby Ellsbury began the first with a double, took third on an attempted pickoff throw by catcher Raul Chavez and scored on Dustin Pedroia's single.

Boston stranded two runners in the second and left the bases loaded in the third. They also left the sacks full in the sixth, but they scored twice before doing so. Jason Bay and J.D. Drew walked, Alex Gonzalez rapped an RBI single, Pedroia (3-for-4, with a walk) singled to load the bases, and Victor Martinez walked to force in the third run. They ended the day with 12 LOB.

Ellsbury hit a stand-up triple in the eighth on a ball that sailed over Wells's head and rattled around in the triangle. LBJ took a wide turn around third, but DeMarlo Hale wisely stopped him.

The Yankees one-hit the White Sox 10-0 and the Rangers topped the Twins 3-0, so the standings stay the same: 6 GB in the East, 2.5 GA in the WC.
Example
Ricky Romero (3.91, 112 ERA+) / Clay Buchholz (5.02, 95 ERA+)

Romero in 2009
GS IP H R ER BB K ERA
vs Red Sox 3 12.0 19 15 14 13 15 10.50
vs Others 18 119.1 113 43 43 39 87 3.24
Boston has hit .388/.508/.735 against Romero. ... David Ortiz is 5-for-7 with one single, three doubles and a home run. Kevin Youkilis is 3-for-5 with two dongs.

Also: White Sox/Yankees at 1 and Rangers/Twins at 7.

Do the other Sox not realise they're in a pennant race? Are they confused by their own below .500 record?

Fuck. One reason why Boston may have jettisoned Penny too soon.

Amalie Benjamin:

Tim Wakefield has been scratched from his scheduled start Monday against the Rays because his back is acting up. He will be evaluated on Monday. ...

Tonight: Clay Buchholz

Sunday: TBA (Buccholz will start if tonight's game is rained out)

Monday: TBA

Tuesday: Jon Lester

Paul Byrd, who last pitched on Tuesday, is a prime candidate to start tomorrow if tonight's game is played.

tim said...

Fuck sakes. Can we get Nick Green in there?

tim said...

Also, fuck you CWS. Most useless bag of dicks this side of Cheyenne.

"Monday: TBA"

We don't have a game on Monday.

allan said...

Q: Maybe if tonight is rained out, it'll be made up on Monday?

A: No, Jays are playing Texas.

WTF Amalie?

A Conformer said...

WTF Amalie?

Simple typo, I think. Monday should be Tuesday, that's it.

allan said...

Game still set to start on time.

tim said...

According to my MLB schedule widget, Jays are in Texas Monday and we have an off-day.

allan said...

The Globe fixed it -- and now so have I.

tim said...

Also we've got Lester going sunday according to the widget.

A Conformer said...

If HH ends up pitching a one-hitter I'm gonna be pissed.

laura k said...

I can't wait to learn about the hookah from Tim and Ofer.

tim said...

I think I figured out part of the problem. We normally buy the coals in the red package - regular ones, which we have to heat up on the stove.

I bought a pack at a different store in a silver pack, which say "instant light" which I've been lighting the same way as the other ones, and I think I'm JD Drewing them (had to make this post sox-relevant) - in other words, they are ON FIRE.

So, i guess the question is have you ever used these and how to light them. It says to light them with a lighter, but I've tried and it does nothing for me (I think...but I'm really impatient)

tim said...

The DOCTOR IS IN!

laura k said...

Sounds like Lowell's foundation raises a lot of money for food banks. Radio guys say Dr D knows a lot about it - who benefits, how much $$, etc.

Every time I hear that "at the copa" ad I walk around seeing that friggin song the rest of the night. There oughta be a law.

laura k said...

A Conformer said...

So, i guess the question is have you ever used these and how to light them. It says to light them with a lighter, but I've tried and it does nothing for me (I think...but I'm really impatient)

Tim, when you put the lighter to them, do they start crackling, get red where the lighter is, and then the red spreads to the rest of the coal? That's what should happen... I have no idea what those stove coals you talk about are.

laura k said...

OTT

Unknown said...

6 pitch inning

I'll take that

laura k said...

I heard Allan kicking butt on his radio appearance this morning. Since we don't have a basement right now, I got to hear the whole thing. It was cool.

tim said...

You COULD light the stove coals with a lighter, but it would burn your fingers because it would take awhile.

The crackling/orange happens after about a minute on the stove. So yes, that's how we do it.

Maybe I'll give the "instant" ones another try and not expect it to crackle/orange in 2 seconds. I dunno, how long does it normally take?

tim said...

Taz gone, I can deal with that.

MacBeth, OK sure.

Gathright, wtf?

A Conformer said...

Maybe I'll give the "instant" ones another try and not expect it to crackle/orange in 2 seconds. I dunno, how long does it normally take?

5 seconds, I guess. 10 max. Almost everyone I've known that has a hookah has tongs too, so you grab it with the tongs, open the window, light up one side, then quickly get it out of the window so all the smoke goes outside.
Friends who smoke too much hookah often have their fingers become desensitised, though, so they don't use the tongs...

tim said...

well, there goes my satellite signal.

hamilton must have bad weather.

A Conformer said...

And the stove lighting, if I understand it correctly, would burn the coal down too quickly. I think.

Who is Gathright replacing, exactly? Or backing up, or whatever?

tim said...

Ahh I see, so those are probably "instant" light ones...Yeah I use tongs for sure, I can't see touching it without tongs. That's ridiculous!

I don't have windows that open that much so I'll just do it under the stove fan. Good stuff, I'll give it a try. But for now, sticking with the regular coals. I'm not feeling adventurous enough right now.

laura k said...

how about a run or two scoring here, doc

LOB by inning: 123

So they're gonna strand 4 next inning? Should be interesting.

tim said...

This sucks. 6 hits and 1 run to show for it.

COME ON!

A Conformer said...

Shit on french toast. I'd rather be OTT'd than Houdini'd.

tim said...

I also used cold, filtered water as opposed to the usual lukewarm tap water....maybe that helped....

tim said...

Alright, someone explain OTT please! Not in the glossary. Must've started up during my school hiatus from gamethreading...

A Conformer said...

So they're gonna strand 4 next inning? Should be interesting.

If you somehow manage to hit into a double play with the bases loaded while trying to stretch a single into a double (I guess multiple rundowns and Mike Lowell would be involved) would that be considered stranding 4?

Laptop's cruising. Would be nice if his teammates got him a little insurance.

There used to be a Mel Ott reference sometimes, but I think that was usually Jere's thing.

laura k said...

I was about to say Mel Ott, Jere, etc.

laura k said...

Big crossword puzzle name Mel Ott. Clue is often "Giant Mel", answer OTT

A Conformer said...

Tim, try using some anise liquor instead of water. Bourbon can work, too. Great taste, and it gives a really nice buzz.

tim said...

One Two Three....so simple yet so beautiful. I get it! Good stuff.

Unknown said...

On Fire

laura k said...

Beautiful as long as it's our pitcher doing the OTTing.

tim said...

Hmm. I've always considered using liquor, that was probably a future question for you. Thanks! But if the bourbon makes it taste anything like the actual stuff, which I can't stand, that may not be a good idea.

Of course, I've never had good bourbon so that may be a factor.

tim said...

But of course, L!

Unknown said...

Crap

A Conformer said...

Yeah, Tim, one important aspect of the liquor thing is that I love anise and bourbon. Well, maybe I wouldn't say I love bourbon, but it's usually good stuff. I prefer Scotch, but with the hookah, the sweetness of the anise/bourbon fits well.

What do you usually drink?

Unknown said...

Runs

Score many

Now

laura k said...

The hookah talk is interesting. A ritual I don't know anything about.

A Conformer said...

Man, this is the most one-sided pitcher's duel ever.

laura k said...

Gotta go. Hopefully I can see some of this game at home. Maybe we will score another run or two.

No, really. It could happen!

A Conformer said...

It seems like an awful waste of money, building an ice-rink in Fenway for one fucking game.

tim said...

I like this HH dealing thus far.

I do enjoy the anise flavour, sambuca/ouzo/absinthe stuff. Whiskey is also one of my hard liquor faves. I've been on a vodka kick lately, trying out some Polish ones after I watched some documentary on the Poland-Russia "vodka wars" but I wouldn't try that in a hookah, since it has no actual flavours.

Gin is also a favourite, maybe I'll give that a go.

But normally its just beer or wine for me.

tim said...

3 games, ofer...3 games....not that that's any better!

tim said...

And with the ticket prices, I'm sure money isn't their concern.

tim said...

Ouch.

Fuck anyone that says baseball players aren't tough.

A Conformer said...

And with the ticket prices, I'm sure money isn't their concern.

Oh, yeah, I'm sure they'll make a lot of money with it, but it doesn't mean it's not a waste. Maybe a waste of money isn't the right way to call it... But there's an ice rink in Boston already, so what's the fucking point?

And gin sounds like it could work. Wine and beer- almost surely not.

A Conformer said...

Romero's been up there all day long. It's as if he half-wanted to hit somebody.

Benjamin said...

Despite all the pesto I just made, we still haven't scored any runs. I'm starting to have doubts about cause and effect here.

Unknown said...

Sit

tim said...

Nope, wouldn't think about trying it with beer/wine...

HH rollin' - this is good.

Maybe if you coat some steamed spinach with the pesto we'll be in business.

tim said...

And yes I've given up on quoting people for now.

A Conformer said...

It's probably a coincidence, but it looks like HH has pitched well in close games and completely stunk up the joint when given a big lead early. Can't handle the lack of pressure?

Rob said...

Good evening, Thread. And hello, you sexy Seabass.

Unknown said...

Sea Bass!

allan said...

omg ANOTHER RUN!!!

allan said...

cito larussa. idiot.

Benjamin said...

As soon as I started eating the pesto, they scored another run. Guess the peepee finally touched them (pesto power).

I'm hoping for HH for the 8th, then HH for the 9th.

Unknown said...

"I'm hoping for HH for the 8th, then HH for the 9th."

Wow, I didn't realize he was still under 80 pitches.

Alright, I'll go for HH in the 8th and 9th as well.

tim said...

Nice....that's gotta be one of FEW fly outs from toronto

Benjamin said...

Clay's been filthy all night.

tim said...

So would I, Kevin, but given Tito's habits this season, we'll see Papelbon.

Everyone take your blood pressure pills now. They'll kick in by the time this innings done.

tim said...

Although Clay HAS been dealing....I really hope he comes back for the CG.

Unknown said...

"Nice....that's gotta be one of FEW fly outs from toronto"

9 ground outs
9 strikeouts
2 line outs to Lowell
4 fly outs

Unknown said...

"So would I, Kevin, but given Tito's habits this season, we'll see Papelbon."

Just score one or two more runs. If there is no save opportunity there is no use wasting Papelbon.

A Conformer said...

HH has just had everything working for him tonight. Especially the changeup. No luck, no hard hit balls, no nothing. Just a dominating outing. Let him finish it.

laura k said...

Wow, what a performance from Double-H. Good thing he has more than one hit, tho, or that bad call would be killing us.

laura k said...

Man, trying to explain to somebody why baseball is a cool sport while Cito Gaston makes 3 pitching changes in 3 batters is hard.

I've found that there is no explaining the greatness of baseball to people who don't get baseball.

Benjamin said...

At least it didn't hop out today.

allan said...

did he have a shot?

laura k said...

And that, ladies and gentleman, is my boy.

Benjamin said...

I've found that there is no explaining the greatness of baseball to people who don't get baseball.

A Conformer said...

I've found that there is no explaining the greatness of baseball to people who don't get baseball.

This isn't someone who doesn't get baseball. It's somebody that doesn't know baseball. Russian-born Israeli. I was explaining balls and strikes to him.

tim said...

Pen quiet. Good.

No shot, A. Wells got back there quickly. If he bobbled it or was slower than maybe.

Rob said...

I think Ellsbury would have gotten gunned down.

Castig says Hill dives to get Martinez's grounder and throws him out, but did he dive to his left or right? Why can't the radio guy tell us so we can visualize it? Grrrrrrr....

This game was not as close as the score indicates. It should be much larger.

Benjamin said...

We have a good friend who is a Ti-Cat fanatic. I keep one eye on their season because of him.

allan said...

tim said...

I'm just following them out of habit. Went to quite a few games as a kid during the 3 years they were somewhat competitive, then they sucked for a decade or so.

This year they're doing alright so I've been keeping an eye on em. Happened to be playing as I went to see how they were doing so I streamed it next to the Sox game. Tough loss tonight for 'em.
