Smoltz DFA

SoSH post, 4:28 PM: "Tito says Smoltz DFA'd." (discussion/news)

Amalie Benjamin confirms it via Twitter. (Globe)

Per Francessa on WFAN, John Smoltz has cancelled his radio interview today and is flying to his Atlanta home for "personal reasons." Smoltz was scheduled to appear on Mike'd Up today to promote prostate cancer awareness. Given everything that happened last night, it's not a stretch to think he's reached the end.
And:
WEEI:
We're hearing Smoltz's career may be over.
Locker not yet cleared out.
Francona speaking shortly.

If only he had conducted his failed experiment with some other team.

SoSH: "Well, according to WEEI, it wasn't Smoltz's decision. Theo flew down to NY to tell him and told him they'll speak again if he clears waivers. Not a panic move necessarily, but it was Theo's decision, not John's."

Why am I not surprised? I had a bad feeling about this way back. Superstars have to learn to quit while they are ahead. Smoltz, Clemens, and others should have followed in Mike Mussina's footsteps and gone out as winners. I worry about Pedro's attempt to return also.

I guess I am not sorry I missed Smoltz's last appearance as a member of the Red Sox. I was much happier being at Fenway last night for a non-baseball event!

I never understood why anyone was excited about getting Smoltz in the first place. Too old.

I can understand why people want to keep trying, tho. It's what they have - what they know - who they are. It's not easy to walk away from all of it and reinvent yourself. If it was easy, more great athletes would do it, but few do.

Amy, I hope you had a great time!

Because peole still pay you a lot of money to do it, somewhat like the concert at Fenway last night...

Sigh. I miss Wakefield. Any word on when he might be back pitching?

I read that Wake was scheduled to throw a side today, but I cannot find the link now. No real news about a date though.

9C, Paul McCartney can still sing. Apparently, Smoltz cannot pitch.
