G79: Phillies 2, Red Sox 1

Red Sox - 000 010 000 - 1 5 0
Phillies - 010 000 10x - 2 8 0
Another night in Philly and another strong pitching performance - Worley (7-5-1-2-5, 116) - stifles the Boston bats. The Red Sox will face Cole Hamels (lowest WHIP in the NL) tomorrow afternoon.

Lackey turned in one of his best starts of the season (7.2-8-2-1-5, 90) - and he drove in the Red Sox's only run! With two outs in the fifth and Josh Reddick on first, Lackey (.086 career average) fell behind 0-2, looked at three straight balls, fouled a pitch off, then clubbed a double to the wall in left-center. It was his second career two-bagger and second career RBI; Lackey is 3-for-8 since joining the Red Sox (can he play RF?). Reddick and Lackey were the only two Boston players to advance past first base.

Philadelphia scored a run on the first three pitches of the second. Shane Victorino lead off with a single on an 0-1 pitch and Raul Ibanez hit a first-pitch RBI single. Ibanez hit a solo home run in the seventh.

After all the fuss, Adrian Gonzalez had an uneventful night in right field. Ibanez doubled to the wall in right-center in the fourth, and Gonzalez deferred to Jacoby Ellsbury, who threw the ball back in. Ibanez's home run sailed far over his head. Jimmy Rollins grounded a single into right to start the eighth inning, which Gonzalez picked up cleanly. Two batters later, Chase Utley tripled off the top of the right field wall. Bert gave it a leap, but it was beyond his reach.
Example
John Lackey / Vance Worley
Ellsbury, CF
Pedroia, 2B
Gonzalez, RF
Youkilis, 3B
Ortiz, 1B
Saltalamacchia, C

That was SWEET! Could not see the game until I woke up at 6:30 as it was STILL blacked out on MLB.TV an hour and a half after game was over. To Laura k - I choose to see the game in archive over live audio. Guess I'll see tonight's game tomorrow am again, but then can see tomorrow's day game by later evening...a day/night DH.

So, how 'bout that Cliff Lee? And was heartened by Dom Brown's big hit (liked the comment yesterday alluding to "So how can Brown help you?"). The Flyin' Hawaiian did his thing. The Phils offense is pretty much limited to homers...lousy at small ball, thanks to Charlie Manuel.

Big Papi at 1st and Gonzalez in RF...trading defense for offense. I'd do it, especially against a rookie righty. Our best chance is for Lackey to be his normal self, although the Phils offense is known to nicely showcase mediocre pitchers.

Hope I'm wrong but predicting an 8-5 Sox win.

Predicting a score in a baseball game before it even starts. Could that be a definition of insanity?

wayneswhirld said...

But laura, then there'd be no such thing as predictions (and I only do predictions with the opponent winning).

laura k said...

But laura, then there'd be no such thing as predictions

And this would be a problem because...?

Jere said...

Call me Syd Barrett, but I predicted how the Red Sox would do in every single series this season.

Wait. Syd Barrett. ... Marty Barrett. ... Sid & Marty Krofft!

laura k said...

I predicted how the Red Sox would do in every single series this season.

But surely not the scores of individual games?

wayneswhirld said...

And this would be a problem because...?

Hmm...can't really answer that. Some people just like to make predictions.

Jere said...

"But surely not the scores of individual games?"

No. Sounds like somethin' I'd do, though:)

So are you referring to the fact that we really have no way of knowing what's gonna happen on any given night? I surely can get behind that, but if you want to make a prediction (which not everyone wants to do), you kinda have to do it before the game starts. If you care about getting full credit, I guess.

There's also "here's what I think will happen" (a prediction) vs. "I know what's going to happen." The second one's insane to me.

I predict Kathryn will post "I HATE LACKEY" at least once tonight.

AG, on RF:

Just shagging balls out there [to prepare]. I've been there in the past. Again, it's not something I'm going to try and make an outstanding play. I'm going to catch the balls that are hit to me, keep the base hits in front and make sure I hit my cutoff man. ... I don't think many people crash into walls or dive after balls unless the opportunity calls for it. ... It's just for a couple of days so Papi can get in the game. ... If the play needs for me to dive, I'll dive. ... I don't just react and do things recklessly. I'll be the same way in right field. ... I think we could have done it in Pittsburgh. But there was always a fear from Tito and management about the possibility of getting hurt. But I keep telling them, 'If you have fear about getting hurt, then might as well not play.' ... [Play RF growing up?] Not really. I played an occasional game in Little League and stuff. ... I'm never nervous. I could care [sic] less. I'll just have fun.

Buchholz thought he could be back by July 4, but now it won't be until after the ASB.

allan - I am aware of that from checking out your bio, and that you were born in the People's Republic of Burlington (and that's a compliment). Sorry my avatar doesn't have a sox B in it.

As to tonight, assuming Drew is playing, perhaps he should be wearing a batting helmet in the field as protection from D cell batteries.

wayneswhirld said...

The Red Sox are definitely hurting. Was talking with a fan at Bristol Fitness today (I was wearing my Ryan Howard Phillies shirt) and he pointed out all their injuries. The Phils have their own set of players on the DL, though not quite as many and significant as the Sox.

AG in RF, Lackey on the hill?

DRINK UP BITCHES!!!!!

Patrick said...

I like our chances a lot better in a slug fest than in a battle of pitching and defense.

The lineup is perfect!

allan said...

DRINK UP BITCHES!!!!!

With a day game tomorrow, I'm unlikely to hit the bottle, so I guess I have to drink 2 games worth tonight.

allan said...

And Tito was able to avoid all the good arms in the pen. If the Chin can hold 'em to 4 thru 6 or so, the boys will come swingin'.

allan said...

FUCK - ESPN!
Come over here, little bottle....

I do have to admit, i was amused by papi's glove "world's greatest papi" and the ensuing "father's day gift" comment.

allan said...

they beat into the ground, of course....

tim said...

yup, would've been nice if they left it alone a few pitches earlier. way to ruin everything, espn.

allan said...

looking forward to one of the first 2 hitters flying out to AG - and OB or Nomar saying "playing out of position, the ball just finds you"

yup. really looking forward to that ............

allan said...

Gonzalez:
LH lineup
wind blowing out to RF
sun shining bright
lackey giving up liners

what could go wrong?

tim said...

Gonzalez in RF today is going to be the equivalent of Okajima pitching and his head going down when he pitches.

Did you guys know that his delivery is so weird??!!

allan said...

So Lackey's ERA of 7.36 is the highest of any MLB starter with at least 10 starts. He sucks.

Nomar (on ESPN) says: "Lackey's ERA may be high, but he has been 3-1 since coming off the disabled list."

Well, that seems good.

Lackey's ERA in those 4 starts?

6.36.

Nice work, Nomar/ESPN.

what kind of asshole wears a vick shirt?

is there a dead dog carcass on the front?

allan said...

OB says the Sox have had "only a handful of base runners".

He notes all 3 of them.

The Phillies have had 4 men on base.

Wow, what a difference!!!!!

Amy said...

Good evening, all. Just tuning in...how has Lackey been? Only one run so can't be TOO bad.

allan said...

for lackey - he's been great!

for a mlb pitcher - good.

Amy said...

And how has Bert been in RF so far?

Amy said...

Of course, I tune in, and he gives up a double.

allan said...

that double was the closest he's been to a ball. and he defers to lyndon!

nothing has been hit out there yet.

allan said...

i take it back - lackey has been very good.

1st - with one out, 2 singles (1 a blooper), gets a DP

2nd - double and single on his 1st 3 pitches = 1-0, but gets the next 3 easily: K P5, 5-3.

3rd - OTT on 10 pitches: 6-3, 6-3, 4-3.

4th - two outs, double, out.

Amy said...

Thanks for the update, Allan.

allan said...

nice of espn to give advanced notice when kruk is coming on, so i can mute.

though mute has usually been on tonight.

Tom DePlonty said...

I'm in and out of this one taking care of a sick dog - did Lackey just get a hit?

tim said...

i've gone to full mute + music.

allan said...

on the replay, nomar said "and lackey freakin' crushed it" -- then paused half a beat and finished his thought with a semi-sheepish tone to his voice!!!!!

Kathryn said...

I <3 John Lackey.

allan said...

i have espn - o'brien and nomar.

Jere said...

Wow, D'Angelos has a commercial where it's the young guy trying to crunch numbers vs. the old guy who says to just go with what you feel. And they make the old guy win. And it's like an official Red Sox sponsor too.

Amy said...

Tom, I hope all goes well with your dog.

Since when is "freaking" a curse word? Isn't that like saying "shoot" or "darn"?

Jere said...

Worley track power

Amy said...

Pitchers want to hit. Huh.

allan said...

shit - play lackey in RF over mcdonald for his bat

Amy said...

Score more runs, please/

Jere said...

Well the hierarchy goes Fuck, Shit, Damn. So as their counterparts go, it's Freak, Shoot, Darn. So Freakin', while in the counterpart category, is at the top of the list, making it the closest to an actual swear.

Tom DePlonty said...

Thanks, Amy, me too.

allan said...

tom: good luck with the pooch.

(we may have an issue with tala's hip or leg. going in tomorrow morning.)

Amy said...

Oh, no, what is up with Tala?

Tom DePlonty said...

My buddy Claude has some kind of GI thing. Not pretty.

allan said...

something is wrong with her right leg or hip -- she can't put any weight on it and can't really walk stairs. yelps when she sits or lays on it wrong. doesn't seem to be a pulled muscle or something that would go away in a day or two (which she has had).

i think it may have been something that has been lingering for a few weeks. ... we kind of assume she needs an x-ray.

allan said...

is that a chronic GI condition?

Oh, poor Tala and Claude. Nothing worse than when a pet is not feeling well and you cannot talk to them to find out what they are feeling or to reassure them.

Tom DePlonty said...

Allan, no, something that started Saturday. He's already been to the vet and been on meds, but still has symptoms, including some blood. And he's a little dog (Italian greyhound) so things can can get bad quick.

Hope Tala is OK. What kind of dog?

allan said...

white shepherd/husky -- and she looks so little and small and sad when she is sick.

among the many issues our pit mix had in nyc was chronic stomach problems. big headaches. ... hopefully, claude's problems clear up quickly.

Amy said...

Lackey, hit it out this time!

Jere said...

"staying in the Philly area and being blacked out."

Gotta be a Philly station showing the game, did you flip around??

allan said...

put your chin into it!

tim said...

fuck. and the lackey we know and hate returns.

Kathryn said...

I thought T was having hip problems associated with old age. It was hard for her to get up and down. She fell when walking up stairs and sometimes had to be carried. Our vet felt around and said it was not her hips. Instead her spine is degenerating and causing the nerves to be weakened going to her back legs. She started on strong NSAIDs three weeks ago and is sooooo much better now. All this with no xrays. Maybe Tala's case will be as easy.

I hope all blog dogs feel better soon.

Lord Lynch said...

Jere - the price is right, staying at mum-in-laws guest house on the shore. We get Phi 17 and it was on last night but not tonight, and we don't get ESPN.

Never mind. It seems like Lackey's just coughed up the game.

tim said...

well, ortiz promised a dong tonight. sooner, rather than later, pls flo.

allan said...

bullshit -
we got 6 outs - top of the order in the 8th

allan said...

schneider, of course, takes the game "one day at a time"

Kathryn said...

All-sitcom team

Jere said...

I guess it would be on Comcast SportsNet in Philly area, but yeah if you don't ESPN I guess you're only getting network stations.

Tom DePlonty said...

Too early too concede the game. Isn't the Philly bullpen supposed to be not so scary?

Amy said...

Allan, was that a reference to the old sitcom with Bonnie Franklin?

Amy said...

I guess it was!

Jere said...

I worked for a company with Schneider in the name, and I kept wanting to wear a T-shirt to work with Schneider from ODAAT on it, with the company logo on there. (But considering what they fired me for, I'm guessing that would have gotten me fired, too.)

allan said...

I must have had a dog's sense of smell for those runs. Clearly, they are coming along a few innings after I picked up the scent.

tim said...

lackey pitches like a dog with ailments.

Lord Lynch said...

I watched a game here last week when Oswalt was taken out and they got spanked by the Cards, and it was as if there were a funeral in town - no offense, no bullpen, no consistency, no heart, and I looked at the standings and went - are these people for real?

Last night after Lee's performance I wondered (a) if these people suffer from bipolar disorder and/or (b) whether we should just cancel the season and give the Phillies the inevitable World Series trophy a rotation of Lee, Halliday and Hamels will provide?

A truly bizarre set of people.

tim said...

no disrespect meant to tala or claude.

Lord Lynch said...

Tom - re Philly bullpen. They claim here to have three closers on the DL. Given they keep running Lee out on over 110 pitches per game, someone else might end up there and then we'll hear some gnashing of teeth. (I'll be back in jolly ole England by then, though).

Amy said...

Wow, that show was one for almost ten years!

Tom DePlonty said...

Lackey really was not that bad tonight.

Jere said...

What's worse, sleeping with Eddie Van Halen or sleeping with your dad?

tim said...

"tonight" being the key word. i can't complain about tonight, that's for sure.

Tom DePlonty said...

Or, I guess I should say, has not been yet...he gives up the leadoff single even as I type this...

Lord Lynch said...

Not that it is a valid excuse, but the Interleague play has really messed with us this time around, especially on the road with the DH. Maybe the top order press too much knowing we have sub .200 hitters and call-ups down the bottom. As I said, not valid, doesn't explain the crap-a-looza against San Diego, but a dreadful quality game at Pitt on Sunday apart, we pretty much deserve the fate our offense has provided.

Amy said...

So would Drew have caught that?

allan said...

no. hit the top of the wall. seems like it couldhave been a dong.

Amy said...

LOL, Jere!

allan said...

if lackey wants to pitch like that the rest of the year, i'll be thrilled!

Jere said...

Blaming Interleague is ALWAYS a valid excuse in my book. I still can't believe they would have these games count and that somewhere somebody agreed to allow it.

allan said...

morales - that's our best option in a 2-1 game in the 8th?

Jere said...

In this NESN ad for Jay Leno live at Foxwoods, they show his routine about how men are stupid because they play golf in thunderstorms and say "I'll stand on this mound and hold this metal rod..."

What mound? If you're holding the flag, you're on the green, which I guess could be raised, but that's still not a mound. A green that's a mound would be like a practical joke--miss the hole, it rolls down the other side, and on and on. Stupid Leno.

Amy said...

OK, score a run please. At least ONE.

Kathryn said...

if lackey wants to pitch like that the rest of the year, i'll be thrilled!

Agreed x three!!

Jere said...

I'm still holding out for the 8-5 win.

Amy said...

A Papi dong would be just wonderful right now.

Jere said...

Or we tie it here and have a series of back-and-forths in extras eventually outscoring them by 3.

Amy said...

Sp much for that idea.
