G93: Dodgers 7, Red Sox 4 (12)

Dodgers - 300 010 000 003 - 7 9 2
Red Sox - 200 000 020 000 - 4 12 2
After Xander Bogaerts (#20) and J.D. Martinez (#19) tied the game with back-to-back home runs in the eighth inning, Hector Velázquez imploded and gave up three runs in the twelfth.

Velázaquez walked Joc Pederson, committed an interference error on the first base line that allowed Cody Bellinger to reach safely, gave up a single to A.J. Pollack, loading the bases, and then walked Max Muncy, forcing in the Dodgers' go-ahead run. Another run scored on a one-out single by Alex Verdugo and Los Angeles upped the score to 7-4 when a third run scored on a force out.

The Red Sox had squandered a chance to win the game in the eleventh against Dylan Floro thanks to some dumb baserunning. (What a surprise, I know.) Jackie Bradley doubled to lead off, but boneheadedly tried to go to third on Marco Hernandez's grounder to short and was thrown out. After Mookie Betts flied to right (and Hernandez tagged and went to second). Rafael Devers was walked intentionally. Bogaerts's infield single loaded the bases, but X was forced out at second on Martinez's grounder.

Starters: Hyun-Jin Ryu (7-8-2-1-6, 94) / David Price (5-4-4-3-7, 113). Price actually allowed fewer earned runs (1) than Ryu (2), but he also needed 19 more pitches to get six fewer outs.

AL East: MFY 4, Blue Jays 2. Rays 4, Orioles 1. ... MFY –, TBR 6.0, BOS 10.0.

Lefty Hyun-Jin Ryu leads the majors in ERA (1.73), BB/9 (0.83), and K/BB ratio (9.90). He leads the National League with a 0.908 WHIP. In 15 starts last season, Ryu had a 1.97 ERA.

Thank you for posting the right ERA for Ryu. Fox posted his last year's ERA. What do you think of his chances for Cy Young? He tends to choke on the road, but I hope that isn't the case this time.

He tends to choke on the road

Dodgers Stadium is a park that favours pitchers, so it would make sense if his ERA is lower there. And it is.

2019 Home: 0.85 in 9 starts (6 of 10 runs allowed are earned)
2019 Road: 2.98 in 8 starts (15 of 15 runs allowed are earned)
(2.98 is damn good. The NL league average is 4.39.)
2018 is the same deal: 1.15 home, 3.58 road

2017 is more even: 3.48 home, 4.04 road
2014 is flipped a bit: 3.82 home, 3.03 road
2013, same thing: 3.09 home, 2.87 road

Ryu's last road start was in Colorado (7 runs in 4 innings). His first two road starts of the season were bad and average. Here are the five road starts between April 21 and July 3:
May 1 at SFG: 8 IP, 1 R
May 19 at CIN: 7 IP, 0 R
May 25 at PIT: 6 IP, 2 R
June 4 at ARI: 7 IP, 0 R
June 10 at LAA: 6 IP, 1 R
4 runs in 34 innings: 1.06 ERA - That ain't choking!

Just bad flashbacks to a playoff game against the Brewers where he was lit like a Christmas tree.

Would he be the first Cy Young award winner of Asian descent? Looks like Yu Darvish came the closest. If that is the case, the media isn't playing it up.

These two teams sure like to play lots of extra innings when they get together.

I don't mean to be contrary, but tonight was the first regular season game ever between these two teams that went into extra innings. They have played 18 games and are tied 9-9.

There was, of course, the epic 18-inning WS Game 3 last fall. And the 14-inning WS Game 2 game in 1916.
