The Red Sox have signed right-handed pitcher Collin McHugh to a one-year, $600,000 contract.
McHugh, who turns 33 in June, could earn more with a number of performance and roster bonuses. In his career, he has made 119 starts and 91 relief appearances for the Mets (2012-13), Rockies (2013) and Astros (2014-19).
McHugh is currently recovering from a flexor injury in his right arm and has not started a throwing program. Manager Ron Roenicke: "He's willing to do both. So, we'll get him ramped up, extend him out and then see where he fits in our staff."
This is a good pick-up by CBO Bloom. McHugh is a low-cost arm with some interesting potential. I could see him following an opener and throwing three or four innings.
Hector Velazquez was designated for assignment to clear a roster spot.
