G55: Yankees 6, Red Sox 5

Yankees - 010 030 011 - 6 12 1
Red Sox - 000 050 000 - 5 11 1
Jeemer and Snuffer get beat in a hell of a game (and Slappy'll get some positive press with his solo home run in the 9th off the 'bot).

The Sox should be plenty tired when they touch down in Oakland early Monday morning -- still holding an 10.5-game lead.

***

Andy Pettitte (2.51, 169 ERA+) / Josh Beckett (2.65, 169 ERA+)

Matching ERA+! They are tied for 4th in the AL, behind Dan Haren (262) and Chad Gaudin (185) of Oakland and John Lackey (179) of the Angeles. Kansas City's Gil Meche is 6th (157).

Redsox.com:
In his first start against the Yankees this year [April 21], Beckett allowed a season-high four earned runs in 6.2 innings, but still won the game. ... Pettitte's worst performance of the season came against [Boston] on April 27, when he allowed five earned runs and 11 baserunners in 4.2 innings. ...

Ramirez batted .327 with a .577 slugging percentage in May, and is off to a scorching start in June [5-for-8]. He has tormented Pettitte over his long career, batting .418 with 11 extra-base hits against the southpaw in 67 career at-bats.
Doug Mientkiewicz (BR page sponsored by JoS) suffered a mild concussion, cervical sprain and a fractured scaphoid bone in his right wrist. He'll be placed on the disabled list today.

Ouch. Poor Malphabet. I retract my "HAHAHA" comment from yesterday when he was down, before I realized what had happened/how serious it was.

Also, question: I'm looking into getting an Alternate Red Sox Jersey (Yook) - just to confirm, the ones they wear on the field are only the number (no name) right?

allan said...

Home unis have # only. The road ones have name and #.

I wish they would drop the names. I think only the MFY and the Giants have no names at all. Much classier (and traditional).

tim said...

Not the road ones - the red alternates.

tim said...

I looked it up and I'm 99.9% sure its just number.

I don't want a road one cause I'm not a big fan of the grey.

One of my biggest pet peeves is seeing white jerseys with names on them, or with "BOSTON" written on the front - they stink!

I also think they should get rid of the names on the road jerseys.

allan said...

Let's start a petition!!!

What is worse is seeing Red Sox jerseys with "Williams" on the back or Yankee jerseys with "Ruth", "Gehrig", etc. on the back. Guys that never wore their names on the back.

A Sox fan ought to be able to wear a #9 jersey or a Yankee fan ought to be able to wear a #3 jersey without needing a name on the back. Those just appeal to morons who don't know any better or think that passersby won't know whose jersey it is.

And Ruth didn't wear a number at all for most of his Yankee career (the first 9 years, I think).

Also a very good point.

This one in particular also drew my ire. Sooooo uglyass.

9casey said...

In my opinion , I feel as though anyone over the age of ten wearing a shirt with some one elses name on it is a bit ridiculous

laura k said...

Let's start a petition!!!

Hmph. Why do I sense I'm being made fun of... :/

Boston should definitely go back to traditional name-less jerseys. They are so simple and classic. I wish all the original teams would do that - Detroit, Chicago. But Boston for sure.

Of course everyone would say they were copying the Yankees, but whatever.

laura k said...

What does it mean if 9Casey is more mature than me? Should I be concerned? :)

I spent a big portion of my 30s wearing shirts with people's names on the back. Now I'm closer to 50 than 40, and I'm considering wearing Papelbon's name. But I haven't made the leap to Red Sox gear yet.

laura k said...

Why is that regular white jersey w/ red lettering uglyass?

Uglyass are those stupid green jerseys. Or pink ones that little girls wear. Yuck.

While I agree with you about the pink ones, I kind of like the green ones.

As for numbers and names on the jersey. I think if you went back most teams had the names on the road jerseys for the fans on the road would know who they were seeing. At home, it was expected that the fans would know the home team players.

Are we looking forward to the ESPN boys tonight? Talk to you later as I am off to see the nephew play!

tim said...

Because the "BOSTON" on the front is brutal, looks like it was designed (not just made) in some sweatshop in Beijing.

allan said...

Names appeared on the back of uniforms for the first time in 1960 when the White Sox did it.

I can't find when each of the other teams started doing it, but I know it wasn't right away. Clubs were afraid that having names on the back of uniforms would cause a decrease in scorecard sales.

...

In January 2005, the Cubs decided to remove the names from the backs of their home jerseys in an effort to "revisit early baseball tradition".

The Dodgers also did this some years ago, but they brought the names back.

1922: First use of Cardinals birds-on-bat.

Also -- first team in the modern era to wear pinstripes: 1907 Boston Doves (later Braves).

The Yankees introduced pinstripes in 1912. Copycats.

allan said...

Also during the communist "Red Scare" of the 1950s, the Cincinnati Reds actually removed their team's name from their uniforms and started referring to the team as "Redlegs".

laura k said...

Dodgers, oh yeah, forgot about that. What a shame they brought them back.

I love the Cardinals logo, it's one of the best in any sport.

How bout when you see highlights from the late 60s or 70s, some of those seriously ugly unis, supposedly hip then, how stupid they look now.

laura k said...

Great tidbit about the Reds! That is better than Liberty Cabbage.

What insanity.

laura k said...

Clubs were afraid that having names on the back of uniforms would cause a decrease in scorecard sales.

This is funny too. Whenever there's a change, or a not-change, follow the money.

How do you sponsor a Baseball Reference page? What does it entail?

Jim said...

Great flashback, Redsock, I've never forgotten this. I laugh my ass off every time I hear the Republican states being referred to as 'Red' states.

allan said...

How do you sponsor a Baseball Reference page? What does it entail?

Paying $!

AT BR's page, click on "Classic BR" in the top left corner, then click on Newly Available Pages to see what is newly available. And if you go a player's page, you can see if anyone has spornsored it. If not, it gives the annual fee.

I did Snook's for $25.

The 2007 Red Sox page is available for $240!

(A lot of pages are sponsored by companies and not strictly fans, which is a drag, but BR is a site worth supporting.)

allan said...

Thus ends the commercial portion of our broadcast.

You have got to see footage of the manager of the Mississippi Braves. It is the ultimate on-field meltdown. Makes Sweet Lou look like a creampuff.

laura k said...

I haven't found video yet, but here's a story.

laura k said...

Google News for "Mississippi Braves Manager", lots of fun stuff. You must see the video to fully appreciate it.

laura k said...

Re BR sponsors, who sets the price of the page? Is it only ML players, or minor leaguers too?

Jere said...

L: We saw the vid on ESPN earlier today. Ho--ly--Shit. Seriously.

allan said...

BR sets it. Scrubs from 1910 go for $5, while stars are much more.

Only majors.

Jere said...

Red Sox won 2 World Series' wearing pinstripes--before the Yanks ever did. Again, copycats.

About the current jersey situation: The way I've been justifying it is just what s1c said: We've still got the traditional home, without names, because we know the names. The roads let the other city know who we are. It would be nice to see the current roads without names. That'd look cool.

I agree, though, the "Ruth 3" shirts are ridiculous, not just because they look stupid and never existed, but because you really should know the only guy to ever wear 3 for the Yanks. (Even though, two years ago, a Yankee fan at Yankee Stadium asked me what number Ruth wore.)

allan said...

Here it is!!!

Love the crawling on his stomach up the back side of the mound and lobbing the rosin bag as a grenade!!!

Sexy Lips has never done that!!!!

allan said...

Other Yankees have worn #3. In fact, they gave it away as soon as possible -- the year after they booted Ruth out the door:

George Selkirk: 1935-42
Bud Metheny: 1943-46
Eddie Bockman: 1946
Roy Weatherly: 1946
Allie Clark: 1947
Frank Colman: 1947
Cliff Mapes: 1948

CaKeY said...

Its when he does the grenade bit. That's hilarious!

CaKeY said...

Man, im not seeing all the comments before posting or something...

Jere said...

I was gonna say "first Yankee to wear 3," but since I knew they started using numbers when he was on the team, I figured I'd say "only Yankee to wear 3," not even thinking they might have given it to anyone else AFTER he was gone. Wow. I never knew that. Thanks.

allan said...

I figured I'd say "only Yankee to wear 3"

They used it for another 13 years.

(TJ on that one, Jere. :>) )

allan said...

FYI: If Ruth's spirit was going to curse/haunt any team, it would be the Yankees. They treated him like a piece of shit at the end of his career in New York.

It is ever thus. And I don't mean just in New York.

This minor league manager absolutely tops my previous favourite meltdown, by Lloyd McClendon. I think he was managing the Pirates at the time. After getting ejected for arguing a call at 1st, he stomped back on the field, picked up the base and stomped off with it. "YOU'RE SURE AS HELL NOT USING IT!!"

Pretty sure he threw the base back on the field when he was done.

tim said...

lmfao, what a great video (miss braves)

allan said...

According to the Globe, it looks like we'll start on time.

allan said...

ProJo: "According to multiple industry sources, the umpires’ postgame report, filed after Friday’s game, stated that Proctor’s actions were deliberate and warranted a suspension. But yesterday morning, Bob Watson, Major League Baseball’s vice president of on-field operations, overruled the umpiring crew and told the Red Sox that Proctor wouldn’t be subject to further discipline."

Yankee Bob to the rescue.

allan said...

More from ProJo:

"I guess what this means," said one angry Red Sox source, "is that the next time we want to hit someone, all we have to do is do it with a 2-and-2 count, then have Varitek escort [the hit batsman] down to first base."

laura k said...

And make sure he keeps his mask on for good measure.

s1c said...

Ah back from seeing the nephews team win 5 to 1. Love watching the kids play LL.

Redsock, I wasn't aware of the names being 1960. I thought it was earlier than that, good to know.

Raining here in norther CT and the clouds look packed north of here. Not sure if I want them to play, might be best if the team calls this game for rain early since the Sox have game tomorrow vs A's.

10:05 starts the next three nights, glad I will be in the office instead of on the Road tues and wednesday.

allan said...

I'm going to go out on a limb and say Joe Morgan says 2 intelligent things tonight.

Let me know, though, because I'm watching on mute.

laura k said...

Oh no! Don't even think about a rainout. This is my last full game for a while, as I fall asleep in the 3rd inning of west coast games.

laura k said...

Let me know, though, because I'm watching on mute.

You know, that's not fair. Now Tim and I have to battle it out on the honest reporting front. Come on now, put your sound on and suffer with the rest of us.

Or I'll start a petition.

tim said...

Now Tim and I have to battle it out on the honest reporting front. Come on now, put your sound on and suffer with the rest of us.

Actually I find ESPN much more tolerable than Fox. I hate Buck on so many levels.

I'm finding this amusing. Is this game on Sportsnet in Canada? I'm watching on MLB TV, as this room has canadian satellite and computer. the TV room has US satellite and no computer.

but canadian satellite is down right now anyways (storm)

laura k said...

Actually I find ESPN much more tolerable than Fox.

Oh god, me too. I really don't mind the Sunday night team. My partner, on the other hand...

Yeah, it's always on cable, Rogers SportsNet, every Sunday night. Not only that, if you have cable, and the Jays aren't playing, they'll usually go to NESN for the Sox game! That's what you get for having satellite.

allan said...

beckett looks good. let's light up tucan sam.

s1c said...

The key to this game may be who can get to the bullpen first. Posada is smoking this year.

allan said...

WMP fielded it cleanly!!! yay!!!

laura k said...

Well, bullpen to bullpen, there's not much contest. I think the key to this game is playing it, cause if we play it, we'll win.

laura k said...

WMP fielded it cleanly!!!

"Jerry got it open!"

allan said...

keep in mind that in most of the sox-mfy games this year, ny gets a lead, blows it and loses.

so this one in unfolding according to plan.

s1c said...

L-girl said...
You know, that's not fair. Now Tim and I have to battle it out on the honest reporting front.

Unlike yesterday when I was restricted to the radio, I am able to watch the espn so will gladly referee.

allan said...

damon taking balls at first? is his arm strong enough to turn the 363?

allan said...

Milk Dud!

s1c said...

Not surprised to see Damon at first, I know they put M-alphabet on the 15 dl but you got to figure that wrist will take longer than 15 days.

laura k said...

I find it much easier to tune out Morgan than McCarver, and Miller is harmless.

laura k said...

Miller just said it feels like October. You know he meant the chilly weather, cuz the Yankees won't be playing baseball in October!

laura k said...

(He actually did mean the weather.)

laura k said...

YOOOOOK

allan said...

jeter goes to his left about as well as dick cheney.

yoooooooooook

allan said...

man, the espn camera truped the hell out of me on lowell's fly ball

s1c said...

Actually I kind of like Miller, its Morgan who gets me on edge. He does what, one game a week? Has he ever heard of prep work for games.

laura k said...

i know you hate jeter, but there's no need to compare him to satan.

laura k said...

I like Miller too. Harmless is a compliment when it comes to national baseball announcers.

allan said...

Has he ever heard of prep work for games.

No, he has not.

You ever read the commentary on Morgan's chats at FJM? When asked a question about a team or player, he almost always says something like he hasn't seen the player enough to answer. Almost every time. It's hilarious.

laura k said...

Oh no, don't bring up 1975 with Joe Morgan around... greatest team in baseball... blah blah blah...

allan said...

Morgan the Analyst:

I haven't seen enough of him this year
It's tough for me to answer that question from afar
I don't see how they go about their business on a day-to-day basis
I can't answer that because I don't know what they think individually
Well you cannot compare anything anymore anyway
I don't know much about their front office and their scouting systems
I won't say someone's overrated because I don't see him every day
I know Roger pretty well, but I'm not going to predict what he will do
I won't say someone's overrated because I don't see him every day
I can't answer if they're the worst ever, because I didn't see all of the others that didn't win
It's hard because I didn't see the 27 Yankees
I don't know either of them well enough to make the statements that you made
I'm going to have to wait until the season's over
I haven't seen him play first base
I don't know what the city needs
I'm not sure that's going to happen next year
I'm not sure how much he's going to want or how many years
I'm not sure if it's ever happened before
I'm not sure if it ever happened before
I'm not sure about three different players.
I have no idea where he'll play. I have no idea
I just don't know how good the Dodgers are
I haven't seen him play much
I live in the Bay area, so I get to see a lot and read a lot on the Giants
I'm not there to see how he's throwing and his mental state
I haven't had much of a chance to check him out, but I have heard some good things

allan said...

Joe will never top this one:

"Well you cannot compare anything anymore anyway."

allan said...

THERE'S a shortstop!!!

laura k said...

Miller just told the *correct* story about the Pesky Pole. That might be the first time I've heard it correctly on TV.

s1c said...

LOL on the chats. As for the 75 Reds, they were good.

The 75 WS still ranks in my mind as the best Seven Game Series even though the Sox lost it was a great series. 2nd best seven game was the 2001.

Best 4 game of course was 2004!!!

allan said...

that pesky never hit any home runs down there ever at all in his whole career?

laura k said...

Scrolling up, I thought some maniac had just spammed JoS. But no, it was Allan being Joe Morgan!

laura k said...

Many people think 1975 was the best WS ever.

Others think 2001 topped it. Hmm.

that pesky never hit any home runs down there ever at all in his whole career?

That he rarely hit HRs, but the only way he could have hit one was to get it right around that pole. As opposed to, that's where he always hit them.

allan said...

Fact -- he hit only 6-7 HR at Fenway in his career and NONE of them went near the pole.

Someone went back and looked at the Boston newspapers.

allan said...

damn - got work.

guess i'll have sound on and listen along and watch if anything happens.

laura k said...

just checking, prior to this year, did any red sox player ever get a hit besides manny & tiz?

Good link, thanks s1c.

tim said...

"you know I believe wins and losses is how you judge how well a guy is pitching..."

What a complete retard. I heard that...

Now he's talking about how the A-Rod "Mine!" had something to do with an unwritten rule.

laura k said...

Uh, no. He's saying that people say there are unwritten rules, but that's basically b/s. He's agreeing with you and me about Alex's yell.

laura k said...

Right before Tim said that, I was about to post: I hate it when Joe Morgan makes sense. :)

s1c said...

I like his kindlier / gentle game now. Of course I blame his network for it being the way it is with warnings being issued etc. If ESPN hadn't been playing the donny brooks etc on Sports center and other wise stirring up the pot then the enforcement would have been left on the field.

Well at least that's my story and I'm sticking to it.

tim said...

Uh, no.

There was nothing wrong with my comment ;-)

I just said it had something to do with unwritten rules...not about his position on it...(i didnt hear the first part of it, all i heard was "A-Rod...unwritten rules...blah blah blah...")

tim said...

Arrrrrgh...dont think Lowell should've thrown that one...

s1c said...

This may be a few innings late but, how about when Peter Gammons validated Morgans point about Youk's hitting streak by saying Youk did not think he would have a long hitting streak because he walked so much and then you could almost see Morgans ego getting inflated and he talked about it for the rest of the inning.

Jeff said...

Awful call on Wily e

laura k said...

Yeah, I caught that - Youk, hit streak, Morgan. :)

ZS, cool! Now I remember you mentioned that. I can't imagine why your game is blacked out.

Uh, no, don't hate you. A bit confused why you're posting that here, but what do I know. Maybe everyone here gets it but me.

i was looking for hockey tickets on craigslist when i got distracted and saw an ad with that title. very...ugh, and i thought that i would share it to see what other people's reactions are :P

laura k said...

Looked out to me, but we need a better replay angle.

Lugo, Lugo, Lugo. Everyone knows you make the out AFTER you score the run. Get home safely and keep running to first next time.

I don't know, Tim, don't you live in Hamilton? Maybe you're cross-posting on JoS. ;-)

108 pitches thru 6? ok.

allan said...

don't worry, tim: we won't ask why you are looking at that ad during the game. ... not that there's anything wrong with that.

...

(my father's gay)

tim said...

watching it live, it looked like he got blocked then stepped on the plate right before he got tagged.

the ONE replay looked like i may be wrong, but who knows for now.

thatdietcokegirl said...

is that a gay-toned ad?

laura k said...

incredibly steeped in gayness

allan, everyone here now thinks your (deceased) father is gay

laura k said...

no, the ad is men seeking women.

hahahaha, i'm sorry! i didn't realize that craigslist had personals, and upon clicking on them that was one of the first to show up. so naturally i had to read into it, what in the hell is going on.

(ive really got no way outta this)

s1c said...

We only get the one replay on that play at the plate? Grrr.

Heart stopped watching Pena go for that ball.

Lopez in for Abreu.

laura k said...

yeah josh!!!

"IF the bullpen can hold it"?? Whatchoo mean if, Mr Miller?

laura k said...

(ive really got no way outta this)

nope

thatdietcokegirl said...

i love my dead gay son!

sorry. hey gay is oK! ;D

yeah miller needs to shut up with the 'if' crap.

laura k said...

I know, where are the replays? (And where is Allan telling us it's because he was safe and ESPN has a pro-Yankee bias?)

allan said...

i was unloved as a child. ... i was breastfed by my father. [/rodney]

lugo looked out.

(that guy in the ad has a early papelboner.)

laura k said...

gay is fine, gay is great, but why is Tim posting about his Cialis adventures? :D

thatdietcokegirl said...

cause all guys are interested a sentence that has 'hard' and '36 hours' in it?

s1c said...

could really use a DP here.

laura k said...

Hey, you're all invited, I'm just assuming Tim's the only one here in Canada. (Woti's already invited, he can't make it.) (But we met him at the last Sox game here.)

thatdietcokegirl said...

but yeah to act on the posting about it thing....not so sure there ;)

Jeff said...

Lopez fails to do his job

laura k said...
