G10: Red Sox 12, Tigers 6

Tigers - 000 200 130 - 6 10 0
Red Sox - 000 400 44x - 12 13 1
Very nice to see the Red Sox respond every time the Tigers scored some runs.

In addition to 13 hits, the Red Sox drew nine walks. Seven of those BBs came around to score.

Drew was 3-for-3 with a BBI and a sac fly; he scored twice and drove in two runs. Pedroia singled twice, walked, and scored twice. Ortiz walked twice and scored twice. Crisp singled, doubled and walked. Yook doubled in two runs, walked and scored twice. Manny had a two-run double and scored twice.

Wakefield battled through five innings (5-3-2-5-5; pitch countby innings: 22-22-27 23-14 = 108). Sexy Lips began the eighth with an 8-3 lead, but he allowed a walk, single, walk, single, single, before getting a 6U-3 double play on a nice play from Lugo. At that point, Boston led 8-6 and Ordonez was the tying run at the plate. Papelbon came in and got the third out. The Sox tacked on another four-spot in their half of the eighth and Bot mopped up.

***

Nate Robertson (9.00, 46 ERA+) / Tim Wakefield (4.50, 95 ERA+)

Lineups inside: Yook at 3B, Casey at 1B, Crisp in CF, and Cash at C.

Ughh! Lugo setting the table. He's fabulous in the 9 spot, I think we should keep him there. But alas, we'll see how he fares.

I wish they would just put Drew in at #5. We'd have the L R L R L thing going on, and Drew is hot sexy in the box these days.

CASHIE'S GOING DEEP!!!

Zenslinger said...

I am lost on the oatmeal thing and it's been going on a while.

The glossary says:

Oatmeal, We Have Oatmeal: [tk]

allan said...

Zen: L or I will epxlain closer to game time.

allan said...

Last year when the Globe would post the night's lineups, I'd often annouce them with a comment: "We Have Lineups!"

It reminded me of the signs we see in diners/coffee shops all the time. A paper plate tacked up on the wall with "We have oatmeal!" written on it -- usually with a little smiley face. There's never a professional oatmeal sign; it must be a diner tradition to have a hand-written one.

I looked far and wide for a picture of a hand-written sign to go in the Glossary, but there does not seem to be one in existence.

Zenslinger said...

Maybe because no one serves the stuff?

Jere said...

Did Lugo just get called "fabulous"?

41 and rainy tomorrow night for game one of Yanks series. Amy and I will freeze and get wet...

Jere said...

Lowrie up, Lowell 15-day. You know what, Lowell needs the rest anyway. He looked like a different guy at the plate.

s1c said...

NESN is saying Lowell to the 15 day, Lowrie's contract is being purchased.

Jere said...

Carmona: Not two, but four years, $15 mil.

So I guess both NESN channels get Bruins pre-game now, and then the "plus" goes to Sox game at 7, while regular NESN goes to the hockey game. Does this mean everybody's gonna talk about hockey again?

allan said...

Lowrie will wear #12.

laura k said...

I also looked like crazy for the "We Have Oatmeal" sign, to no avail. It is a diner tradition. Written with magic marker on a paper plate.

Why it means "we have lineups" is anybody's guess.

Zenslinger said...

Today's embarrassing admission: I read the gossip page. I find very little of merit there, but for some reason it helps me get through the afternoon at my office job.

So...slightly out of context and in honor of RS's Stones fandom, here's the latest
Keith Richards quote:

"I shove terrible things inside me."

laura k said...

That's quite a quote, even for Keith. We just saw the new Stones/Scorsese movie today (see my blog). Keith looks and sounds in rare, lively form.

Jere said...

My NESN+ channel's sound is muffled and annoying. You didn't think I wouldn't get a complaint in about this....

allan said...

whew -- saw comcast -- shit, det announcers.

wait, now it's fox with red wings intro. hockey????

shit, is it on another station? click click click ...

come back -- and it's nesn! ... whew

Benjamin said...

Laura, just get a paper plate and draw your own. The Internet's a silly place to worry about things like proper sourcing and fabrication of evidence. If anyone calls you out on your forgery, the result would increased blog traffic, Ebayable paraphernalia, and maybe even a Quaker Oats sponsorship.

allan said...

lowrie -- who i think played for pawtucket this afternoon -- in the dugout

laura k said...

Phrenile, I'm on it!

Last night I suggested I draw a We Have Oatmeal sign and take a picture of it. It seemed dishonest. Silly me.

laura k said...

YOOOOOOOOK!!!!

allan said...

wow -- great bare hand on the bad bag hop!!

yoooooooookk

Jere said...

holy crud. what a play by Youk!

s1c said...

Youk!!!!!

Jere said...

Sheffield pulls a Millar imitating Sheffield imitating Millar imitating Sheffield.

Jere said...

Youk pulls an "opposite of Lowell" and gets three defensive outs in one inning.

Jere said...

Opposite of Lugo, I meant to say...

Zenslinger said...

Yook retires the side?

laura k said...

Whew, glad you explained that, I was confused.

s1c said...

Re: Oatmeal, I think that the signs started in WW II as cereal was one of the Rationed foods and that was where the signs came from originally. However, I am not for sure (did you know Quaker was formed in 1901?)

Will take that Inning from Knucksie!

Zenslinger said...

(see my blog)

I did so.

laura k said...

s1c, interesting! i knew quaker was old, but not that old.

who here likes oatmeal? i do.

oh no, i said i wasn't going to blab on game threads...

Jere said...

Good hustle, Julio.

laura k said...

nice work lugo!

s1c said...

slugo!!

Jere said...

I like oatmeal cookies. Not regular-type.

laura k said...

"(see my blog)

I did so."

thanks :)

Rangers take a 2-1 lead over the Orioles in the seventh inning, with one out.

laura k said...

If Remy and Don talk about the Bruins, I'm going to have to say it: Go Habs!

Jere said...

plain "fuck" for FY

laura k said...

yeah, i caught that too.

usually if he Ks its FUCK ME

Jere said...

I like how phrenile gives us an Oriole update down to the out, heh heh.

Jere said...

Papi pulls a 2/3rds Lugo

Jere said...

The Japanese sword-fight way better than the Domincans.

laura k said...

What did they do for the Dominicans?

I would like this if it wasn't so Shea.

allan said...

cash with the baaaaaaaaaaaad throw

s1c said...

FY needs to be taller. (about 6 feet taller).

Jere said...

Dominicans did a lot of dancing basically. Dancing on dugouts, and dancing in concourses with crowds around, Washington Square Park style. Then they had the parents of a native Dominican, American soldier who died in Iraq throw out first ball. Then they had a woman sing the Dominican anthem. I could just FEEL the racist types getting restless around me. And those parents got a pretty half-hearted ovation. Usually you say "Iraq" and everybody gives a long standing O. Not when it's a non-"regular" white boy who died.

Jere said...

that was an awesome attempt...

(sorry for the "awesome," L)

Jere said...

Bill Lee successfully pulls that play off in the Baseball Odyssey movie.

s1c said...

re: Oatmeal - Bears love it also!

I have to admit that the Drew hit was a first for me.

laura k said...

Jere, thanks for the info. I love Latin dancing, so that sounds good, but I can just imagine the reception to the singing.

Rob said...

Hey everyone. I'm watching the Bruins game on NESN tonight, but I'll poke in between periods.

nick said...

"sw inging strike"?

hey all.

laura k said...

well, some things are awesome. they must be, or the word wouldn't exist.

allan said...

hearing remy stumble over every single promo he tries to read makes me think there must be about 16 hours of unused tape from those cvs ads.

Jere said...

"well, some things are awesome. they must be, or the word wouldn't exist."

Awesome.

allan said...

wake pitches
22 in 1st
22 in 2nd

laura k said...

you mean the sovreign bank ads, i think.

whoever worked that magic to get remy to say the whole thing right is a genius.

Jere said...

When I saw the Sox play at Shea in, like, '01, I think it was a "day." Possibly Hebrew day. Or Italian. I can't remember. I do remember being one-hit by some Met who wasn't a great pitcher.

laura k said...

They called it "Jewish Heritage Day," if I recall. I guess it sounded better than Jew Day.

nick said...

If he hits them, they can't get a hit.

Rob said...

Quite a pickle Wake's got himself in, eh?

Rob said...

Knuckleball > Cabrera

Zenslinger said...

Miguel's swinging strike came up WAY outside on CBS GameCenter.

laura k said...

cash is cool

s1c said...

Zen - the swinging strike was belt high middle of the plate and then 6 inches off of the plate. It is really moving.

s1c said...

Wakey gets out of the jam!!!!!

laura k said...

beauteous!

Zenslinger said...

Escape artist!

And a no-hit bid intact...uh, if he can throw 200 pitches.

allan said...

hell of a stop by cash -- plobby old belli might not have been as quick.

another bagel on the board in the you know what column from wake

nick said...

whew.

What are you all watching on? Not gameday? CBS, others?

allan said...

wake pc: 22-22-27 = 71

jeez.

Zenslinger said...

Thanks, s1c.

Sorry, RS. I didn't really think the jinx was in effect all things considered.

allan said...

Mayor Doubles.

laura k said...

we're getting nesn on our cable package.

we still get EI b/c there's no directv in canada.

yay.

Rob said...

Luis Tiant on the radio.

allan said...

a 200 pitch limit may not get wake thru 9.

andy said...

I love Casey at the bat

Jere said...

NESN plus. With its muffled sound.

laura k said...

so ish and joe grav and others must be busy w/ the bruins tonight.

life is easier when you only care about one sport.

Jere said...

Jew Day -ica.

Jere said...

hockey's a sport?

Rob said...

Yeah. I'm here in-between periods. But my main attention is on the Bruins, who are severe underdogs in the playoffs.

andy said...

on the contrary i do not love crisp at the bat

Zenslinger said...

Is it just me, or does it seem like the pickoff move to 2B was much more common 20-30 years ago?

In other news, in encouraging Lugo to drive Casey in, I just caught myself calling him "Sloogie".

And...another Fuck Me.

laura k said...

i guess if curling's a sport, hockey's a sport.

Zenslinger said...

Jew Day -ica.

Now that's gold.

I'm off to The Bar.

laura k said...

Jew Day -ica! Very good.

s1c said...

B-fly and I watch the curling every olympics. We love it!!!

What a waste of a lead off double.

Rob said...

Interesting definition of "sport".

If auto racing is a "sport", then chess would be a sport, and so would your daily commute.

And so would hockey.

Rob said...

Speaking of hockey...

Back in a little bit.

laura k said...

Curling is surprisingly fun to watch. (Surprise for me.) It's supposed to be great fun to play, too, even casually. I could see that, a la bowling or bocce.

It's on TV a lot up here. Provincial and natl championships and such.

laura k said...

Yeah, I gave my opinion of auto racing here recently. I agree, Ish. Enjoy the game.

The braveheart comment of the night - re - Oatmeal
When the Romans conquered England, they had no idea how hard it would be to fight the Scots, whom were invincible. Highlanders were noted for carrying oatmeal in their poaches. In fact, England used to say, "A grain which in England is generally given to horses, but in Scotland supports the people." With a comment like that, the Scots replied, "England is noted for the excellence of her horses; Scotland for the excellence of her men."

Time to break out my family plaid!

laura k said...

Remy: "Tickets are ten! Dollars at Fenway Park."

allan said...

cashedballa.

Jere said...

What's it called when Marcus Thames breaks his bat?

laura k said...

Jere, is that a riddle? OK, what is it called?

Jere said...

The Sliver Thames

nick said...

I'm a fan of feather bowling.

not so much of detroit scoring....but then, detroit is the only place to play feather bowling in the U.S.

Jere said...

It's Enrico Palazzo!

allan said...

What's it called when Marcus Thames breaks his bat?

2:30?

laura k said...

OK, I don't know what feather bowling is and I don't know what Sliver Thames is supposed to mean.

andy said...

You know I get it, we can't hate wake.. but I have had zero confidence in him for a couple years now. I know he gets double digit wins. But he also has double digit losses because he gives away the farm every outing. He got lucky to get out of that bases loaded 1 out situation. He is a mens slow pitch softball pitcher. I hate his game.

Jere said...

wow, the "Nah" goat ad is back.

laura k said...

Whoa.

I'm not into liking players b/c we're "supposed to", as most people here know. I never missed Trot Nixon and I couldn't wait for them to unload Mirabelli.

But Tim Wakefield and other knuckleballers, as long as they can be effective, have a place in baseball. It's different, but it's not bad, IMO.

It was insane to ever use him in the bullpen, but as a starter, as long as he can still do it, why not.

laura k said...

yeah, the aflac goat. it's cute, but it's old now.

allan said...

wake is a league average pitcher who pitches a decent amount of innings in a season. for a paltry $4 million. as long as remains about average (or better!) and wants to pitch, i say he stays.

nick said...

It is sooo time for "How Papi Got His Groove Back"...That's a movie I'd watch over and over.

Jere said...

Wake's way better than a softball pitcher.

laura k said...

Nick, you'll soon have a chance.

s1c said...

Amy - Knuckleballers are good for the staff because usually they are inning eaters. That is why they get so many decisions.

Wakefield is the ultimate go with the flow pitcher. When he is hot, ride him, when he is cold get the innings.

laura k said...

I'm assuming "softball" is exaggerating for effect. A softball pitcher would be creamed facing even the worst ML hitters.

allan said...

i remember when wakefield was the closer.

not good times.

allan said...

2 Sox on ... hey what's that? you smell something burning?

Jere said...

Bullpen band's a playin'.

laura k said...

He's ON FIRE!!!

Go Manny GO!

s1c said...

MBM and ON FIRE!!!!

Jere said...

That was bizarre. It's like Manny knew the ball would be cut off.

andy said...

Drew f'ing earned that RBI

and I apologize for my wake comments I just want to see someone pitch harder than i can. I clocked at 90 mph in my prime. That was 2 yrs ago.

allan said...

yep - drew's bat is smokin'

...

manny thought sveum was still at 3B, so he did the opposite.

laura k said...

No more Drew-plaining for now! It's been replaced with Lugo-plaining. (Which I am trying to think of a better word for.)

s1c said...

Tied game!!!!!!

ocoC should be at third!!!!

Jere said...

I think that hit above top of wall. Or the pole

laura k said...

You don't have to apologize. You're entitled. But don't try to tell us you can pitch better than anyone in the majors. The speed gun is not the only factor, as I'm sure you know.

Jere said...

yup. pole. wait, they're wrong, if it hits above wall level foul pole, it's out of play! idiots!

andy said...

ground rule off the pole

s1c said...

It hit the freaking pole! How freaking strange

Jere said...

I can't believe they took that long to figure that out. "Extension of the wall"? Come on, Remy.

allan said...

you could throw 100, but without location -- and two other pitches -- you wouldn't last a week in AA ball.

Jere said...

If that was the case, the wall heights would be "80 feet, 37 feet, 18 feet, 3-4 feet, 80 feet" from left to right

Amy said...

Amy - Knuckleballers are good for the staff because usually they are inning eaters. That is why they get so many decisions

S1c, I just got here. Were you talking to me or another Amy? I happen to love Wake, so need not explain his role to me. :

Jere, you going tomorrow night? Where are you sitting?

No game on NESN tonight, so I will be trying follow on the computer.

andy said...

I never tried to pitch for the majors or the minors. I wish I didnt give up baseball. But anyways I wasnt saying i could pitch better i was just saying, again an exaggeration for effect, that I want to see power pitching with control not random outcomes off soft pitches. I am just anti-knuckleball. Not a hardliner against it just right now I want to see fastballs. Of course I am anti-jinxing.

Jere said...

Andy--I'm just sayin', if you don't like him as far as his numbers go, why should it matter what kind of pitches he throws? If you look at the stats over his long career, would you even know he was a knuckleballer?

s1c said...

bye bye belli!!!!!

Ca Ching!!!

allan said...

cash checks in with his one hit for the first half of the season! and gets a ribbie.

Amy said...

How are you all SEEING the game? I hate watching by computer.

laura k said...

Many casual athletes mistakenly believe they could compete against professionals. It's a real lack of appreciation for how much better professional athletes are, how much better the game is.

s1c said...

Amy - that was meant for andy!

NESN should be on your back up cable, here in the hartford area its on channel 3 (cn8).

allan said...

beckett was firing fastballs in 2006 -- and he sucked ass.

i don't care how wake does it -- just turn in a 4.50 ERA or so. he does get frustrating at times -- but so does every pitcher when they struggle.

nick said...

Emma and I are watching gameday, but my battery is about to give out. Then it's off to read "Frog and Toad". Emma says that redsock's icon is her favorite.

Jere said...

There was Andy/Amy confusion.

I meant to say 3-5 feet, not 3-4.

AMy-I got a single ticket the other night. They put all these tix on sale. I got two together for Sunday and one for tomorrow. Face value. You realize every time this happens now I want to contact you but can't except through this blog, and there's no guarantee you'll see it? Ah well. Section 42, bleachers. Low row, too. So I'll be rained on.

Amy said...

Ahh, there it is. CN 8--Thanks, s1c. I never would have looked there!

laura k said...

Amy, I hope by now you've found the game. Your fellow New Englanders seem to have it on another channel.

Jere said...

Amy, RCN is also channel 8. check nesn.com

Jere said...

I almost brought up the '06 Beckett! I wa gonna point out Wake's ERA plus last year was better than Beckett '06.

Amy said...

Of course, I missed the big inning. Heard the Tigers' half on my way home.

Now I can see again.

allan said...

wake at 94 pitches thru 4.

tito would love him to get thru 5 with the lead.

allan said...

Emma says that redsock's icon is her favorite.

she has an appreciation for the arts.

Patrick said...

Just stopping in to say hello and give 2 cents.

Manny had me laughing so hard on his run. The guys on the radio said he ran right though a blatant stop sign from Demarlo Hale. They said Hale did everything short of tackle him to tell him to stop.

Man Ram keeps things loose around here. I love that guy.

s1c said...

Amy - glad you found it because the online springfield papers sites suck bilge water.

Jere said...

That is beautiful.

laura k said...

I also thought of Beckett in 06, but only said to Allan.

allan said...

KC 1, NYY 0 after 1.

Patrick said...

Wake though 5. Does that mean we get wild man Taverez now?

laura k said...

Hey Patrick, I love him too.

allan said...

MDC was warming last inning.

allan said...

manny: "outta my way, hale, i'm sparkin' a rally here!"

Jere said...

that is a slow man.

Amy said...

Springfield paper is getting worse, though I do like their Red Sox coverage.

When I watch on line at work, I usually use CBS or Gameday.

Damn, thrown out at second. Glad we are ahead.

Rob said...

Nice to see the Red Sox have taken the lead. You learn something new everyday, like how the foul pole is out of play even if the ball has hit the ground, etc.

laura k said...

s1c, you're into bilge water lately.

FY out at 2nd. Turning him into FM.

Jere said...

Don't take Wake out!

Amy said...

Papi really have a rough time.

Maybe one of those hawks can give him a spark.

allan said...

looks like millions of dead tigers is coming in.

laura k said...

Jere, did you ever explain your Sliver Thames comment? You totally lost both me on that one.

s1c said...

Aye, just returning to my nautical past (lots of inspections lately have reminded me of the bilges as in stinky and oily).

Jere said...

ooh, non-Yank announcers on mlbtv for KC-NY game!

Patrick said...

Pedroia doesn't know he's not 6'1" 200lbs

laura k said...

Aye Matey.

The closest I ever came to being nautical was a dog who looked like a pirate. Black patch over one eye. Arrr.

Jere said...

L: I lost both you? Wow:)

You know, a sliver. Of wood. The sliver Thames. Like the River Thames.

Amy said...

What was the foul pole controversy? That happened before I could see the game.

laura k said...

My typing: too busy modding.

Your joke: oy.

laura k said...

Pedroia is a terrier. They all think they're Rotweiller size.

s1c said...

So RS is Tito hoping for 2 from MDC or 2 from jeemer?

allan said...

"disposes of inge"

laura k said...

I swear Don just said "Possible Polanco".

Does he have a brother Probable Polanco?

allan said...

So RS is Tito hoping for 2 from MDC or 2 from jeemer?

how the hell would i know? :>)

ococ hit a ball down the RF line, it hit fair and then bounced up and hit the pesky pole. after some discussion on air, it was agreed that calling it a dead ball was right. double for cripsy

Patrick said...

That's the MDC we all know and love.

Jere said...

Melk dong. 1-1.

allan said...

doubt that jeemer will go 2 at any time soon. they wanna save his arm.

andy said...

I thought about it and I figured out my issue. When Beckett gets outta trouble or does well you know his control is on and he intended the pitches to go where they went. With Wake its all random. In the crunch I want a guy to go out there and laser his pitches, that's amazing. Wakefield just throws it out for chance to guide it in. I guess his pitching is more inspired. Would wakefield have the numbers he does were he a Royal? Pre-2008 Royal that is.

Patrick said...

Milky homered. 1-1 in Kansas.

Amy said...

Thanks for explaining the foul pole controversy, Allan.

JD really IS on fire! Wow!

laura k said...

The man's ON FIRE!

allan said...

With Wake its all random.

I'm pretty sure this is inaccurate.

Jere said...

Amy: 1. Did you see my comment to you before? 2. Where are you sitting? 3. That night I was announcing and said you were listening from Maine--that was a joke, imitating Joe saying who's listening from what station, and I like to say "Bath, Maine." I know you're in the four- one- thrizzle.

allan said...

drew 3-for-3 -- told ya so

laura k said...

If it was random, he could never have survived in the majors this long. That's like believing Manny doesn't know what team he's playing or what the standings are.

Jere said...

The W-L numbers? No. But that wouldn't change his effectiveness as a pitcher.

andy said...

God i hope papi gets it together soon. Even lugo is hitting this year. It is exciting. If we can continue this bottom order production and get the top 3 in shape, which should be any day now, we have a helluva season coming at us. This weekend would be a Hanktastic time to get all the cylinders going.

Jere said...

Baby Jordan in for the Tigers.

Patrick said...

I hope we'll be seeing more J.D. Dong this year. I'll take singles though.

s1c said...

Andy I think if you look at all knuckleballers you will find that they do about the same no matter how bad the team is around them, go take a look at some of Niekro's numbers and the bad teams he played for in the 70's.

andy said...

Ok so Wakfield knows where his pitches are going to end up? If he does he is the only man in the world that does, which is perfect. I am not gonna cut him from my team. I just do get frustrated with him when hes off.

Amy said...

Jere, O missed your comment before. Sorry!

We are sitting in our friend's amazing seats about ten rows back behind the dugout (the Sox dugout, of course). Where will you be?

My daughter and her friends will also be there. Not sure where they are sitting.

Could you please make sure it is warm and dry?

allan said...

worried about papi's bat = worried the sun won't come up tomorrow morning

andy said...

I am 0 for 3 tonight I believe. This is just not my game. but hey if it helps them win then call me 0 for the season.

Jere said...

Warm and dry, ha! No chance....

allan said...

Ok so Wakfield knows where his pitches are going to end up? If he does he is the only man in the world that does, which is perfect.

you know i didn't say that.

you said it was all random. i said that was highly unlikely.

I just do get frustrated with him when hes off.

me too - but i get frustrated when any sock is off.
