Clay Buchholz (3.27, 136 ERA+) / NYY: RHP Chien-Ming Wang (1.23, 341 ERA+)
A rematch of last Friday's game. Wang threw a complete-game two-hitter (New York lost the other two games in the three-game series) and Buchholz allowed only one run and four hits in six innings.
That's the best start that I've had this year. It's just something to build off of. I didn't do anything great. I think I did the little things good enough to get by and keep the team in the game to win. ... They've seen me once and I've seen them, so I think each of us have maybe a little bit of an edge on one another.Manny Ramirez is 13-for-25 against Wang. ... Nine of Kevin Youkilis's 20 hits this season have been for extra bases, giving him a .635 slugging percentage and a team-high 186 OPS+. Plus, he's been kind enough to allow a family of sparrows to live in his goatee until daddy bird can find a new job.
For those of you outside New England who may be trapped with the MFY announcers tonight, there is an alternative: Jere! Check out his blog for info on hearing his broadcast.

tdcg: i'm a small breast man. if i was dr. frankenstein, i'd have erin tone it down. true fact.
Moeller looks a bit like Alan Trammell to me.
As Tom Hanks said, there's no crying in baseball. So no guilt either.
L just drove up. Bringing the rally mojo.
that was a strike dammit
Tom Hanks also said life is like a box of chocolates.
Who is this Moeller? Where'd they find him?
there is plenty of crying in baseball. a lot of it. i hate that quote. totally false.

Just ask Suzyn Waldman.
i hate their back-up catcher.
I just heard some weird Beastie boy like rap in the background in Yankee Stadium.
Out.
is tdcg here? i dont see any of her comments?
Drew's arm is ON FIRE as well!
eff you dud.
You are OOOT
TDCG - No doubt that Schill is a dwarf!
nice play at second by slugo and drew!!!
Why with all the Tom Hanks movies are those the only two lines I can think of? Oh, yeah, "Houston, we have a problem."
false or not - it's a great line where it's used
And a GREAT play with a little help from the wall!
BWAHAHAHAH!
Why with all the Tom Hanks movies are those the only two lines I can think of? Oh, yeah, "Houston, we have a problem."
WILSON!!!!
Replay doesn't like it, but I'll take it.
Tom Hanks: WILSON!! WILSON!!
Of course, that line is false---just as false as the line that life is a box of chocolates.
I have cried plenty because of baseball.
l is just watching tonight. no comments. but she's got the red wine and will bring us runs.

Hoping Drew's throw was a momentum changer.

Hi, Laura.
Ortiz - still struggling?
But Erin can make it better, no?

NOT a pretty swing :(
A: L says hi.
Heh. Jeter leap. Not good nuff.
Past a leaping Jeter.
Hey L.
- I
Holy shit!
CI is human! Do the announcers know?
There's those words again, "just out of reach of Derek Jeters glove", good thing he's CI.
Time for a sweaty dong!!!
Youk's still limping.
Yook,Yook,Yook
They wrapped an elbow pad around Youk's shoe.
shitty cut from the yookster.
Well, that was a bad swing from Youk.
But I hear the man up now is on fire.
hey - it's gettin late.
Nice of Joe to point out that you can see the ball better when it's in your eyes

Heh.
Bruney starts for the dugout.
Drew stays put.
morgan says home ump has been quite good.
yeah both clubs are wildly pissed athim.
Manny's not used to running with the pitch.
Did Manny really think Jeter was trying to get him to step off base and get tagged out on that foul?
come on drew!
I loved that shot from Manny to Jeter and back to Manny.
Talk about contrast!
more 9th inning magic baby. Give it to me.
this sucks.
crap!
Can the Sox win 3 games in the 9th on the road in a row?
hmmm, magic 8 ball says "Better not tell you now".
flag of white in there.
lowrie replaces yook at 3b.
I wonder if the Flag can finally retire the Juice Guy.
I hope Youk's ok. What was the injury time out earlier in the game? Yankees were in the field.
lol @ the tom hanks quotes.
i liked him in splash xo
tdcg: i'm a small breast man. if i was dr. frankenstein, i'd have erin tone it down. true fact.
ftw((
(my boobs were just like weehee!!)
ok we scored like 304985734 runs in the first 5 and we can't get TWO to tie it?? TWO.
(2 dollarssss)
Youk fouled one off his foot hard.
Then did it again a couple of pitches later.
heh. That pitch ducked in, Jeter did his little wussy dance.
hmmm, magic 8 ball says "Better not tell you now".
I asked and got a very solid 'definitely'
hgh would be up 6th -- timlin better not get that far
hgh would be up 6th -- timlin better not get that far
That would be the hope.
Walks don't help.
Youk is such a freakin' ball magnet. defensively and offensively. at bat he's hit seemingly endlessly and fouls off himself with regularity. Then on the field...well y'know.
Leadoff walk. Seen this before. At least Giambi isn't up now.
sox 9th:
tek
mayor
lugo
lyndon
i hate games like this if we end up losing.
hgh would be up 6th -- timlin better not get that far
Ish- was being positive, he's expecting the MFY's to have to bat again.
Splash---yeah, he was cute in that one. And Big.
So there, Erin Andrews worshippers.
Ish- was being positive, he's expecting the MFY's to have to bat again.
Naturally.
Hopefully not against Timlin. Perhaps of the likes of Jeemer, or the Bot.
Did Abreu just get teabagged?
Super slow mo of a ball bouncing up and hitting Abreu in the face.
Priceless.
Worse yet, he struck out swinging on the next pitch, against Timlin.
Our bullpen is sobering.
WEEI has a competition this year, every wed. they ask tito a second guess question. This weeks was "why have timlin pitch to HGH on friday"?
Our bullpen is sobering.
And it's making me an alcoholic.
TDCG - what was that ski/snowboard movie with the "2 dollarss" line?
My kids used to say that all the time.
Whew! Caught a break!
Crap!
Meh.
No need for Fruitbat now.
%#$^&&Q@@!%GW^$^@@%^#@^#^&W
Better off dead with John Cusak "I WANT MY TWO DOLLARS!"
Remy says this is a big situation for Timlin.
And he blew it.
Time to turn in my ticket. Don't see us scoring 4 in the 9th. Hate to give up, but ...
sosock - better off dead;)
amy - omg big. love that too. one of the best movies everr:))
game
god timlin is fucking toast.
Our bullpen is sobering.
And it's making me an alcoholic.
score.
not
over
And to Giambi we get.
Okajima, Pappelbon and nervous breakdowns.
Wow. That was crushed. Unmistakable sound.
amy - omg big. love that too. one of the best movies everr:))
Turner and Hooch, ftw.
Bloody hell.
ok now its over
fuck it.
get em tomorrow
I have about a dozen 'if only' regrets about this game. Most of which have to do with bad ump calls.
Hey, he didn't get a HR. Timlin is actually doing better.
Is Francona just letting him stay out there indefinitely since we already lost the game?
Amy
Tito turned in his ticket when he brought in Tin man.
Loyalty is one thing, but he is COSTING us, big time.
and yes, they let Timlin face GIambi yet again.
like gagne last year, tito is letting timlin show what he's got.
nothing.
fucking neo-con shitstick better retire by sunrise.
DFA Timlin. Please, for love of all that's holy?
So this is Timlin's third disastrous outing with one good one. How many more does he get?
maybe all these pitches will blow out his elbow.
we can only hope.
timlin's a neo-con to boot? Didn't know my opinion could go lower.
all those runs for nothing
bin watchin' since the 6th (fucking work burning me out)...but not commenting (MLB.TV and i want to watch fullscreen)
clearly fullscreen isnt worthwhile anymore. im still holding out for the 6 (so far) run comeback...fucking white flag. fuck.
a dozen, im guessing, amy.
Who can replace Timlin? We must have a ton of candidates in Pawtucket.
Oh, please don't remind me of Gagne. That one caused me serious indigestion last season.
But these things are more likely to happen when your starting pitcher goes 3 2/3.
Seems like we're in the middle of a shift in pitching strategies and ways to win in baseball. We went from pitchers throwing complete games, to guys coming in and closing a game out, to the need for good set up men. Now the importance rests upon middle relief. Not just to give innings, but to keep you ahead, or tied.
Why is that Ish? What is changing?
So this is Timlin's third disastrous outing with one good one. How many more does he get?
2?
I don't know which feels worse---coming from behind and then losing the lead anyway or being blown out from the beginning?
Why is that Ish? What is changing?
I think the starting pitchers are pitching less innings now than even a few years ago. Maybe it's just because it's the beginning of the season, but it seems like 7 innings is too much to expect now.
pitching strategy is always changing. from 1860 to now.
you always want good pitchers
i have to disagree with ish.
nothing is changing, its just that the starting pitching as of late struggles to go deep. the strategy is still to have the starter go deep. its no the strategy to bring in middle relief.
Pitching problems generally do seem worse when the weather is cold. But I don't remember last season having any problems with our starters like we are now.
why does joe morgan keep calling 2006 "two oh six"?
L says a lot of people are saying it.
So this is Timlin's third disastrous outing with one good one. How many more does he get?
He gets 5 for every good one, and 5 to start.
so...using good ol equation of a line...
y = mx + b
where
y = total appearances
m = 5 (# of appearances per quality start)
x = number of good appearances
b = 5 (default start #)
wow im a nerd
Am so glad that after tomorrow night we won't see the MFY's until July.
These long games are killers.
MFY's getting all their runs tonight, captain kick ass shuts them out tomorrow.
# of starter innings has been a pretty steady line for a century or more.
come on lugo! hit into a double play!
I have my own theories about human nutrition and physical degeneration. I think poor nutrition has to do with depleting vitality, but I have little evidence to back it.
Love the algebra formula, Tim. Your diverse skills continue to amaze me.
Remember when the MFYs scored four runs and we immediately came back and scored five? We need six. :/
arghdalskdjsadklsad.
time to shower/snipe(ebayauction)/sleep
ill see ya tomorrow.
wow im a nerd
But we count on you for the spinach man!!!
i have to disagree with ish.
nothing is changing, its just that the starting pitching as of late struggles to go deep. the strategy is still to have the starter go deep. its no the strategy to bring in middle relief.
Perhaps it's because hitters are being more patient. We see that routinely with the Red Sox and Yankees, but it'd be interesting to see if other teams have become more patient.
It'd be interesting to compile some numbers, like amount of pitches per outing, how many innings, how many pitches per hitter, etc. Throughout MLB.
It could be because of the cold, also. Ebbs and flows, I guess.
Yeah, yeah, tease us. We are six runs down.
I love the equation, but I hate what it means... at least seven more bad outings from Timlin before he hits the trash heap.
# of starter innings has been a pretty steady line for a century or more.
that's what I wanted to hear.
The early part of the sason does mean something.
I for one adjust my pitch count limits for my LL'rs all season, starting very conservative and stretching it out a the season goes.
X-Rays are negative for Youk's big toe.
Well, we did score six that one time. Like that, please.
How many pop-ups can you have in 1 game?
Patrick, was that some random thought, or related to the starting pitchers?
good god
SHUT UP JOEMORGAN\
SHUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUT
UUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUP
twas related to pitchers.
win tomorrow.
morgan just saying jibberish -- like a random baseball word generator.
seriously, he took a big step into senility tonight
Let me pose this question to the peanut gallery...
Who would tonight's MVP be?
)(*&)$*_$#$*)(*$_@)$+@)_#$(@_$)(*#_()__
Pitchers aren't being fed well?
Allan, am I wrong in saying that last season our starters lasted more innings per game in April than we have this season?
Who would tonight's MVP be?
Posada or Timlin
ish, thier backup catcher, two clutch hits
So much for that. At least Papi didn't have to make the last out.
Hawkins for MVP
Thank gawd, this thing is over.
Tonight's MVP: Hawkins.
Hawkins would be my MVP.
goodnight
Allan, am I wrong in saying that last season our starters lasted more innings per game in April than we have this season?
Probably not.
But let's remember this is a bitch of a schedule this month. We should be expecting struggles.
OK, I will be hoping for better results against the weaker teams.
And tomorrow night as well.
Good night, all.
Bruney gets the save.
OK, we've split so far this season.
Let's go back ahead tomorrow.
