L must hate this Fios commercial... the "awesome" one.

DANNDANN said...

Jere: That made me roll about on the floor laughing ;-)

redsock said...

Jere: I almost want extra innings to hear that exchange.

(Will Don ask him if he ever gets mistaken for Larry David?)

DANNDANN said...

Does anybody else have the flutterings of a heart attack whenever Lopez comes into a game?

redsock said...

this inning is starting to resemble a bus crash.

ish said...

Interestingly enough, he's actually better against righties.

In a close game, I get a bit nervous. Not today, though. And certainly not as much of a heart attack as I'd get with Timlin

L-girl said...

I like Hammond because he's a famous person who I'm actually taller than.

Peter Dinklage?

L-girl said...

Jere, I never hear them. Mute to the rescue.

But I'm sure I would hate it. Thanks. :)

ish said...

Peter Dinklage?

Not quite, L. Not quite.

Richard Hammond from a (amazing) British motoring show called Top Gear.

Hell of a day for Milton Bradley .. first the sun-in-the-eyes play in left, and then a rally-killing K

I think Don's thinking, "every time this guy makes me have to think, I bring up another of his misgivings."

DANNDANN said...

Credit where its due to Lopez.

I-girl: Actual height conditions don't count ;-)

ish said...

I look up at the TV and there's the video of the infamous Flying Pizza.

redsock said...

nesn putting macha in his place -- force him to mention sox appeal. :<(

ish said...

Ken Macha can't wait for the Sox Appeal promo. Probably so he can look at all the pretty girls.

ish said...

The hawk is back at Fenway.

No relation to the White Sox.

L-girl said...

Ish, I was naming a famous person that most people are taller than.

DANNDANN said...

I remember the pizza..still freaks me out that you Americans would give away perfectly good pizza!

ish: that Hammond pic is almost life-size.

ish said...

Ish, I was naming a famous person that most people are taller than.

Yep. I googled him and immediately recognized him. Couldn't believe his name! Heh.

He's done appearances on some TV shows. One of which being Nip Tuck, that I used to watch. There was a sex scene he was in. Awkward.

DANNDANN said...

11 walks for the Sox...Nolan Ryan must be pleased.

Orsillo, stop with this under the weather shit...Remy just couldn't be bothered with getting up ;-)

Jere said...

"still freaks me out that you Americans would give away perfectly good pizza!"

The people who sit in the field boxes can afford that shit.

ish said...

I remember the pizza..still freaks me out that you Americans would give away perfectly good pizza!

That guy was crazy for throwing that pizza away. I wonder if that pizza was any good, though. There are certainly a lot of pizzas that are worthy of throwing rather than eating.

DANNDANN said...

Macha lists out the current Boston sports scene...it seems impossible that I actually got tied in with Boston teams on a fluke.

Thank the lord that happened!

ish said...

I wish Don would just come out and say Remy's got a bad back. Then we'd all sit back and feel bad for him, and then have a laugh because of his fear of showing that he's getting older. example: hair coloring.

Jere said...

Lowrie's elbow stuff looks like he has an armband. And I noticed it the day after Marzano died, so I thought maybe there was a Marzano armband..

L-girl said...

Isn't ballpark pizza always awful? Not that you need to buy it and throw it away, but it isn't really good pizza.

Like the pizza of our recent game thread... mmmm....

DANNDANN said...

True, the pizza may have been throw-worthy but what went on in that guys mind to throw it at a guy who botched a catch?

ish said...

it seems impossible that I actually got tied in with Boston teams on a fluke.

How is it that you've become the Red Sox and Bruins fan that you are? Besides our friend Lord Lynch, are there many others over there who watch baseball or hockey? I know there are hockey leagues further to the east, though.

L-girl said...

So DannDann, how did you get into Boston sports?

I'm not into Boston teams at all. Just team. Singular. This one.

Jere said...

As a vegetarian, I'm pretty much stuck eating the Fenway pizza every game. There are the slices, and then there's the Papa Gino's "whole pizza" which has the diameter of a quarter. They both barely get the job done... barely.

L-girl said...

True, the pizza may have been throw-worthy but what went on in that guys mind to throw it at a guy who botched a catch?

What indeed. That was so crazy.

ish said...

True, the pizza may have been throw-worthy but what went on in that guys mind to throw it at a guy who botched a catch?

If you listen to the local sports talk station, WEEI, and you listen to some of the people who call in, you'll realize there are a lot of people who would be a danger to others with pizza in hand.

L-girl said...

Jere, have you thought about bringing food? I started doing that at the Stadium many years ago. If you go to a lot of games (as you did, and as I used to do), the food is so bad and unhealthy, and so friggin expensive. I used to bring tuna sandwiches and we would just buy beer.

Jere said...

It was because the other guy had made fun of him for having the pizza. So he was like, "here's your pizza."

s1c said...

8-2, Sounded like HH had his change working today!!!

Guess we won't need a dramatic comeback today!!!

Jere said...

I save $ buy going to the water fountain, paying a few quarters for parking, and buying all tix at face value. So the one pizza slice before the game is do-able for me.

But yeah I should just pack a sandwich.

L-girl said...

Right, I forgot you don't drink. That certainly makes for a less expensive day.

And I always paid face value too. :)

DANNDANN said...

I-girl: I'll list it as short as possible...

1) Always liked UK ice hockey and saw a late night game where the Bruins beat the Avs so I hooked on with them...http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/recap?gameId=221014017

2) A friend suggested I watch the baseball with him one night, cant remember the game but i enjoyed it so I looked it up and thought "well I like the Bruins and Boston has a team" and it went on from there.

Just a case really of picking the first team I saw.

ish said...

Lopez's two strikeouts were to right-handed hitters.

DANNDANN said...

ish: I do listen to WEEI...well for about 5 minutes before I get pissed off with the hosts.

redsock said...

if you squeezed murphy's head in a vice for awhile, he'd look like luis gonzalez.

L-girl said...

It wouldn't kill Fenway to upgrade the food a bit. I know it's not about the food, but still.

ish said...

Just a case really of picking the first team I saw.

I figure that's as good a way as any to go about it. I wonder how it'd work for me on the other way around.

What British sport would I go for, and what team would I want to watch?

L-girl said...

DannDann, that's cool - so random.

(By the way, it's L-girl. As in Laura.)

ish said...

ish: I do listen to WEEI...well for about 5 minutes before I get pissed off with the hosts.

That's cool. And that's about as long as I can last as well. But my problem is with the callers. I like listening to the banter between the hosts, but then these guys call in who can't talk right and just go on and on and on about how the Red Sox should have traded Ellsbury, Buchholz, and Lester for Johan Santana or something.

L-girl said...

I semi-followed Newcastle United (Toon Army) because of a friend. I liked having a premiership team... but trying to follow anything but baseball is futile for me.

DANNDANN said...

well ish, football (soccer) is the main sport over here; I support Derby County, who are about to become the statistically worst Premiership team ever but enough about that ;-)

Most foreign fans follow either Man Utd or Liverpool.

Jere said...

Oh I would love if Fenway realized there a lot of vegetarians, and just people that don't want to live on pig butts all the time or whatever. They've definitely added a lot of stuff, but nothing compared to the newer parks.

DANNDANN said...

L-girl: I make that mistake ever Goddamn time ;-)

ish said...

Most foreign fans follow either Man Utd or Liverpool.

ESPN carries the occasional football game that I'll watch. I used to play as a child, so the game really brings me back.

I support Derby County, who are about to become the statistically worst Premiership team ever but enough about that ;-)

That's too bad. That was like how both the Bruins and Celtics were last year. Not the worst ever, but they were both at the bottom of the standings.

redsock said...

mmmmmmmmmmmm ... pig butts.

ish said...

Oh I would love if Fenway realized there a lot of vegetarians, and just people that don't want to live on pig butts all the time or whatever. They've definitely added a lot of stuff, but nothing compared to the newer parks.

Reminds me of that automatic hot dog machine.

Sl├╝go! 4 for 4 with a walk!

redsock said...

SLUGO IS UNSTOPPABLE!!!.

4-for-4 plus a BB

L-girl said...

Slugo 4 for 4!

Danndann, no prob, I didn't remember you had done it before. Now that you reminded me, next time I will be a real bitch about it. :)

Jere said...

Romney still there.

Jere said...

Cash trickles down to first.

redsock said...

thurston: 0-5, with a K and 4 foul pop outs!

ugh

Jere said...

You'd think Thurston would've just tomahawked one into the ground after the first three pop ups.

ish said...

Romney still there.

Wow. Well, it's not like he's got anything better to do today.

DANNDANN said...

ish: We're so bad this year we actually do a chant in the crowd lets pretend we scored a goal then we cheer manically.

The future is bright though; we have a new American owner in Andy Appleby (ironic) and a bright young manager so fingers crossed.

l-girl: yes it was mega random and i'm very thankful it turned out that way! ;-)

I've called you by the wrong letter at least 3 times I believe.

L-girl said...

Most non-UK fans follow Man Utd the way most non-US "fans" "follow" the Yankees. Which is to say, they don't know shit about the sport, they just know a logo, a few things they've heard about championships, and say they are fans of that team.

ish said...

Makes me wonder why they called up Thurston and not Brandon Moss.

Jere said...

"Reminds me of that automatic hot dog machine."

I heard about that on April Fools' Day. And after believing it for a while, I thought, Wow, I'm a sucker.

Then, last time at Fenway, I saw the machine. No one was anywhere near it....

DANNDANN said...

Exactly l-girl, the amount of Yankee caps I see in England is horrific.

L-girl said...

Allan and I still talk about the grilled salmon on baguette with garlic fries we had in Safeco. The food in the new parks is amazing. Even the "new" Comiskey has great food.

Toronto does not, unfortunately.

tim said...

where the hell did they find this thurston joke?

(back to work)

Jere said...

At least Toronto has a veggie dog.

ish said...

ish: We're so bad this year we actually do a chant in the crowd lets pretend we scored a goal then we cheer manically.

Heh! That's hilarious. Reminds me of the Bruins of last year again. Though I just stopped watching. At least you can have fun with that stuff.

"Let's Go Bruins" chant at Fenway. :D

L-girl said...

I've called you by the wrong letter at least 3 times I believe

well fuck you then :)

Jere said...

"where the hell did they find this thurston joke?"

Again, the guy made a great catch when it was still 0-0. And he wasn't just like found on the street yesterday or something. Surely somebody besides me watched spring training.

ish said...

Surely somebody besides me watched spring training.

Do Brandon Moss make those catches?

L-girl said...

Great veggie dogs! All over Toronto, too. That was a big surprise to me - the Toronto hot dog w/ all the fixins, and a big whole wheat roll.

Those are only outside the park, but it's still a good option.

DANNDANN said...

Yeah ish, we Derby fans are considered among the best in the country...we were effectively relegated months ago yet we still sell out every game and enjoy the Premier League while it lasts.

That chant is fantastic to see, even away fans applaud it lol. Last season with the B's I just kept trying to think we could turn it round this year...funny how things turn out.

redsock said...

poor jere -- left to defend players we'd just as soon rip!

ish said...

All Schilling can do on the DL is catch the first-pitch.

L-girl said...

John Kerry opened the wheelchair division of the marathon today too.

Jere said...

Okay, so Pats Day observed is today. So there are two Pats Days since '69. Maybe they counted both Pats Days to get those extra games? Probably not. But I'm just trying to figure that one out still.

ish said...

That chant is fantastic to see, even away fans applaud it lol. Last season with the B's I just kept trying to think we could turn it round this year...funny how things turn out.

That's what makes tonight so no-pressure. I look at this Bruins team and wonder how well they'll do next year.

L-girl said...

Jere, you can't expect Tim to know what's going on in today's game.

ish said...

John Kerry opened the wheelchair division of the marathon today too.

I'm glad that all he did was fire the gun, and not talk.

DANNDANN said...

l-girl: I stand corrected again ;-)

redsock said...

but the habs have to be feeling some serious pressure.

L-girl said...

I vote for double headers. That would easily make up the difference.

Jere said...

Just sayin, if people can be called a "joke" because of one game, especially after that whole month of April Pedroia had last year.....

Jere said...

As Joe runs right and the ball goes left...

ish said...

but the habs have to be feeling some serious pressure.

Oh yeah. Monumental amount of pressure. From a Habs standpoint, this was supposed to be a pushover series.

ish said...

Delcarmen having trouble closing this one out...

I wish they'd just keep showing the women wearing Red Sox shirts. Then tell us when the game is over.

redsock said...

o-cab shot off the scoreboard.

let's go little manny!

DANNDANN said...

I worry to be honest ish, it could go either way for the B's; either the kids continue to florush and Bergeron makes a big comeback or the kids show some growing pains and Wideman goes backwards again.

Much will depend on what happens with Murray and Fernandez methinks.

L-girl said...

Don says "Rangers not going quietly". But they're going, and soon... and we are soon 14-7!

redsock said...

carl everett set to make thelast out.

Jere said...

I'm honestly less offended by the "this guy sucks" than Red Sox fans suddenly acting as if they don't know who their own team's players are.

It's like when I was at Fenway on Opening Day, and they announced Aardsma, and the guy behind me really loudly goes, "Who???" Why are people proud that they don't know shit?

ish said...

Water and Brooms!!!!

L-girl said...

4 game sweep. Lovely. See you all tomorrow!

redsock said...

ish -- almost all of the globe and mail writers picked MTL in 4 or 5 games, but there was one guy who said MTL in 7.

Jere said...

Dirty Water--what is this, a Bruins game?

(Yes, another team "borrowing" from the Fenway template--I'll give 'em a break in this case though)

DANNDANN said...

Phew...never in doubt really ;-)

L-girl said...

I'm honestly less offended by the "this guy sucks" than Red Sox fans suddenly acting as if they don't know who their own team's players are.

I wouldn't say it's sudden. Not everyone pays attention.

Different ways of being a fan, I guess. Trying to be non-judgemental, because I know this person is a real fan, if a bit distracted and prone to snap judgements.

ish said...

Fernandez will be an interesting story next year, with the Bruins having a terrific #1 goalie in Thomas, and a very good #2 goalie in Alex Auld. But that falls under "good problems".

redsock said...

game lasted 3:33
our win% is .666

ish said...

Very good game, everyone. Great spending the day with you.

Tonight I'll probably venture off to a sports bar for the Bruins game.

See you all tomorrow!

Jere said...

It's fun to see some rookie Yankee pitcher and laughingly say "Who?" or whatever. But your own team? Knowing who your team's players are is not something only very special people can accomplish. Especially what with the internet and all.

Jake of All Trades said...

From last year's Patriots Day Press Release:

Patriots Day Data

PATRIOTS DAY DATA: The Red Sox are 63-48 all-time on Patriots Day, including 26 doubleheaders players between 1903 and 1966...Boston is 57-39 at home (50-38 at Fenway Park) and 6-09 on the road...The Sox have been scheduled to play at home on Patriots Day every year since 1959...Boston was postponed due to bad weather in 1959, 1961, 1965, 1967, and 1984 and did not play in 1995 during the players strike

ish said...

Clay: I felt better today than I have all year with this early start.

DANNDANN said...

ish: they should trade Fernandez IMO or buy him out...I reckon its Thomas and Rask next season...Auld should be able to get more playing time elsewhere.

Freed up cash, hopefully from Murray as well, will hopefully go towards a top scorer a la Hossa.

Anyway peeps Ive got to be off now so I'll sees you all soon...hopefully once the B's have done away with them Montreal fools.

Thanks for the good chat.

;-)

L-girl said...

Knowing who your team's players are is not something only very special people can accomplish. Especially what with the internet and all.

True. But as someone who reads almost nothing about baseball, watches no sports shows, listens to no sports radio, and doesn't pay any attention to spring training - but watches every game all season - I understand how it can happen.

I never heard of Thurston before he was called up. I don't brag about that, but I'm not ashamed of it, either. It doesn't make me less of a fan. (In my opinion, you might disagree.)

I wouldn't judge the player based on one game, but I don't really think that's what that one comment meant, either. Just an offhand remark.

Because you were very excited about Thurston, it might be maddening, I can understand that. But from another perspective, it's just there.

L-girl said...

Jake, thanks for the Pats Day stats! Daniel was right on the double-headers.

Joe Grav said...

one win down, one to go.

And danndann, I am one of those infamous foreign Liverpool fans, but I think I'm pretty good at actually following them and not just pretending I do because of their history. ;)

Morning after comments -
(spent the night at the hospital - no live game watching or threading :( )
absent characters - don't forget Charlie, he of the angels.
Thurston - I vote for Howell III.
Gilligan's Isle - heard a hilarious song on the radio couple of weeks ago, turned out to be the theme song from the never-broadcast pilot episode. Had a serious reggae side to it.
Buchholz - nice bounceback, kid's gonna go places, but hopefully not OTHER places for a while :)
Wife - infection is not clearing up like they hoped, will be in hospital for at least a few more days, more missed games :(
See ya
