G23: Angels 6, Red Sox 4

Angels - 111 011 001 - 6 13 0
Red Sox - 011 020 000 - 4 10 0
For his first career start on three days rest Lester's line (5-9-4-2-1, 81) was pretty much on par with his other starts -- too many baserunners and an Angel run in all but one of his five innings.

But the Red Sox slapped Garland around too. Lugo drove in Drew with a two-out single in the second, Cash began the third with a double and scored on Pedroia's sac fly, and Ortiz drilled a line-drive, two-run homer to right in the fifth. The game was tied 4-4 after five innings.

Hansen made his 2008 debut in the sixth. After two quick outs, he surrendered a solo home run to Kotchman. The Angels got an insurance run against Timlin in the ninth. The Red Sox failed to mount a rally against either Speier, Shields or Rodriguez in the last three innings. They had two men on with one out in the eighth, but Lugo grounded into a double play.

Hansen was sent back to Pawtucket after the game. Justin Masterson will make his major league debut when he starts tomorrow's afternoon game.

***

Matsuzaka is the latest Sock to get the flu, so Jon Lester (5.06, 89 ERA+) gets the ball tonight.

Youkilis is out of the lineup tonight with a sore back.

***

Craig Hansen (not Dusty Brown) was called up and David Pauley was sent back to Pawtucket. Hansen has been great this season: In eight appearances over 12.1 innings, he has allowed three hits, four walks and no runs. Hansen, in today's ProJo:
I've gone back to the way I pitched at St. John's. My mechanics have changed. ... I was able to get a lot of things done in spring training that I needed to. Pitching in different situations, getting myself in different situations and pitching my way through it. It helped out a lot.
***

Jon Garland (4.81, 89 ERA+) / Daisuke Matsuzaka (3.14, 143 ERA+)

In 24.1 innings this season, Garland has faced 109 batters -- and struck out only three of them.
             W L PCT GB
Red Sox 15 7 .682 ---
Orioles 11 9 .550 3.0
Yankees 11 10 .524 3.5
Blue Jays 10 11 .476 4.5
Rays 9 11 .450 5.0
Third-best record in baseball, behind Arizona (15-5, .750) and the Cubs (14-6, .700).

Sounds like Tek is feeling better, so no Brown.

I'm excited to see if Hansen is comfortable in the Majors. If he proves he's ready, it would be a huge plus for us, considering the heart attack inducing toast we send to the mound regularly.

A few things I'd like to share:

-My friend made this hilarious animated GIF from last year's ALDS:

Just ease Hansen in, alright? None of this "Let's just see how he does with a 2-run lead". I'd like to be 4 up or down before they try him out.

Blogger Note:

"Blogger will be unavailable Wednesday (4/23) at 4:00PM PDT for about 10 minutes for maintenance."

So we may have no thread for a few of the first batters.

Joe Grav said...

Boo, doesn't blogger know how important game threads are?

Hansen just need to have clean innings...Please for Christ's sake no walks......

he has the ability I think he just has no idea where the ball is going......

Allan - No Dice tonight. He was scratched with.....the flu. Almost comical now.

Starting in his place will be Jon Lester.

Zenslinger said...

Lester going instead of Matsuzaka accoring to Extra Bases.

Fuckin' epidemic.

'Flu epidemic, that is.

BULLETIN: Dice-K has been scratched with the dread flu---Lester is now starting.

Can't we send this flu to NY somehow?

Amy said...

Just saw the DiceK got scratched. This flu must be awfully nasty. Who gets the flu in April? Is this some bug they picked up in Japan? Could it take that long to surface? It just seems rather odd for all these grown men to be so sick in non-flu season. Could it be a Steinbrener act of sabotage?

Zenslinger said...

My brother and his family in Boston have had it.

Shan-a-Funk said...

damnit....f this flu

First time in his career that he has gone on three days.

Hmmm, must be supper time at Chez sock. So cruising the web looking at various things when I came across these quotes:

1) you will now ask why I’m sucking up to you Yankees fans? It’s because I’m about to say this.

Seriously, have you people lost your freaking minds?

GDGD says wind is 26 mph out to CF.

26???

laura k said...

Hey, guess what I had today? Peanut butter on a ripe Bartlett pear. Totally yummy.

Those who missed last night's gamethread will think I am loopy.

Hey Jere, were you at the game last night?

Zenslinger said...

Someone describe the play at the plate! I missed it.

allan said...

ballhit to lcf and the wall, manny got the bounce, bobbled it a tad, fired to lugo in short lcf. he set and fired a one hopper to cash who tagged kotchman as he slid in. close play but clearly out. nice throw from sluggo.

Patrick said...

96.7 died!

Patrick said...

Socia apparently calls every pitch. I would be annoyed by that if I was Mathis...

Patrick said...

wow, listening to mlb audio and 96.7 at the same time, there is almost a whole minute lag for mlb audio. It's ridiculous.

Zenslinger said...

Thanks, RS.

I'm listening to RKO online. Try not to check too often with the comments because it spoils the suspense.

Nice, Lugo! I just kicked him off my fantasy team, too...

laura k said...

I can't believe I-Bar made that play as he was falling down. Geez.

laura k said...

The only way MLB audio works is if you don't gamethread at the same time. I wish I would remember that when I'm at work.

What's the word for a blogger who leaves comments on other, higher-traffic blogs, for the sole purpose of driving traffic to their own blog?

Someone who doesn't read the blog, isn't part of the community, just pops in, pastes an excerpt from their own post and their URL - and they only do that, never anything else.

Is there an internetty kind of word for those folks?

Amy said...

Well, let me restate. I almost gave up on Lester....

Jere said...

I'm back from Cambridge Common.. (I kind of like the Tim theory of letting everyone know why you're late.)

L: I was not at Fenway yesterday. Had a softball game and then saw much of the game at a restaurant and got home right when it ended. But I will be there for the afternoon game tomorrow.

Benjamin said...

General question about mlb.tv:

I got it a couple years ago, and the framerate was about one frame very 10 seconds, even over broadband. (The audio was fine.) Have they improved the framerate now so that it's actually like watching live baseball? Or is it still just a marginal improvement over radio?

allan said...

Amy: That's normal. I've given up on Lester.

laura k said...

Jere, sounds like fun, I'll be here tomorrow too.

I'm not even supposed to be here tonight, I had a meeting, but didn't go.

you may have had the 400 (that's what i bought this year for weekend work)

1200 is supposedly very nice.

Jere said...

L: I meant I'll be "there" as in at Fenway tomorrow.

And did you know the Bartlett pear was named after my cousin?

heng brothers said...

phrenile,

Generally it's like watching the real thing on TV, as long as you've got a steady high speed connection.

It's really glitchy though, MLB sucks at this whole internets thing.

laura k said...

Oh duh, of course you meant that. Cool, lucky you.

How old was your cousin? Like 110? Haven't those pears been around a while?

Jake of All Trades said...

L-Girl: Maybe a astroturfing or meatpuppet? Both are slightly more complicated than that, but fall under the general gist.

From wikipedia:

Astroturfing

meatpuppet

s1c said...

Amy: That's normal. I've given up on Lester.

I can't say I've given up on him because I was never that high on him.

Would be nice if he proved me wrong though.

allan said...

MLB sucks at this whole internets thing.

They sure are. And they feel they don't have to master one simple task before adding more bells and whistles.

Jere said...

L: Bartlett pears joke--from Curb Yr Enthusiasm. "Bob Bartlett."

Jere said...

very nice by Lugo on the 6-3 DP

laura k said...

I haven't watched Curb in probably 4 years. (And never watched it that much in the first place.) Sailed right by me.

s1c said...

L-girl - are you getting that lately (traffic drivers)?

Nice DP by Slugo!!!

heng brothers said...

Our future double play combination: Lowry-FY-3.

Rob said...

Evening, chaps. Got my ice cream, but in doing so I didn't really see (or hear) how the Red Sox scored two runs. Or how LA scored three. And I was listening to the radio.

It's Wednesday Night, which is Church Lady (Dale Arnold) night. The middle of the game becomes a blur if you're not watching it.

Benjamin said...

Hard to argue with a nine-pitch inning.

Rob said...

Hard to argue with a nine-pitch inning.

Unless six of them were dongs.

Jere said...

Casey "safe" at second with a double

laura k said...

Thanks, Jake. I know what astroturfing is, hadn't heard of meat puppets.

I guess it's closer to astroturfing. Meat puppets (according to that Wiki age) are invited by the blogger, so that wouldn't be it.

Maybe some subset of astroturfing?

Are you high on Buchholz?

s1c said...

Church Lady??? I have to admit that is better than cousin Dale.

Our future double play combination: Lowry-FY-3.

3? is Yook being traded?

Jere said...

Maybe more of a FieldTurfing

s1c said...

9casey - I think HH has good potential because he has 3 real good pitches and he throw strikes. Solid #3 possibly a solid #2.

I've always thought of Lester as a 4.

Jere said...

Man, that was the quickest waste of a leadoff double of all time.

Rob said...

Church Lady??? I have to admit that is better than cousin Dale.

I just think church lady when he talks. I don't not like him. He's got good pipes and knows what he's talking about. He just needs radio baseball experience. And he's getting it. And it's only one game a night per week.

Benjamin said...

AFAIK, it's just called link spamming.

heng brothers said...

There was no way Slugo could have hit that into a double play... why on earth did he do that?

allan said...

so a leadoff double -- and 3 outs on 3 pitches?!?!?!?

Amy said...

I would love to see Lester succeed, given his challenges. But he has not proven too effective lately.

Buchholz...my fear is that his first game will always be his best game.

9casey said...

s1c said...
9casey - I think HH has good potential because he has 3 real good pitches and he throw strikes. Solid #3 possibly a solid #2.

I see your point and actually might agree , but the front office must not feel the same way or the Twins didn't feel they were 1's or 2's

Jere said...

heng, confused about your question....

he bunted for a hit knowing we'd get a successful sacrifice out of the deal even if he was out.

heng brothers said...

9casey: I was leaving Yoook out only because the Mayor is playing tonight... it's Yook's spot though.

laura k said...

Amy, I think you mean his second game. It probably will be his best start ever, but that's ok. We don't need a no-hitter every time out.

Rob said...

I've always seen a lot of potential in Lester, but I know that if he doesn't work at it, and stop nibbling, then he will only be a 4 or 5 started.

I'm a firm believer that when Buchholz gets more time and more starts under his belt, he'll be top tier.

Castig and Arnold are arguing over who has control of the TV remote.

Jere said...

Amy--Clay's no-hitter was his second start I think... if it was his first, I'd have seen it!

Jere said...

Sarge Dong

laura k said...

Phrenile, I guess that's it, link spamming. I was hoping for some cooler name, but that will do.

Rob said...

Craig Hansen warming.

No-hitter was Buchholz's second start. I concur.

heng brothers said...

With nobody out though, unless he executes the bunt flawlessly (which he does fairly often) he's giving up an out to get a base for Casey which... eh, I give up.

It doesn't matter too much if Lester gives up a dong to HGH, Jr.

Amy said...

Second start, huh? Gee, once again the memory fails me. But yeah, I don't expect him to pitch no hitters all the time or even close to it. But his recent starts have been pretty unimpressive.

Rob said...

Vlad's going to send a few people to the hospital tonight.

Jere said...

These guys don't remember John Castino?? I can picture his 81 Topps sticker right now...

s1c said...

9casey - Actually I think the twins thought that they would be able to play the MFY's vs Sox angle and get Lester, Masterson, etc for Johan, but Theo wouldn't play that game and the MFY's balked also. I still think the Lester, ocoC and Lowrie was a better deal than what they got from the mets but we will have to see.

Amy said...

Thank goodness for the DPs or Lester would be in much worse trouble.

Jere said...

L: How about we call it "spelunking"?

laura k said...

Most Red Sox pitching has been unimpressive lately, but it hasn't mattered. Hopefully it will start to kick in soon.

Benjamin said...

Yeah, the DPs are helping keep this respectable.

laura k said...

Great word, spelunking. I'm happy to use it anytime.

We used to have a friend who was a caver. He just called himself a caver, not a spelunker.

Spelunking it is.

allan said...

But his recent starts have been pretty unimpressive.

Monday: 6 shutout innings with only one guy to third base.

s1c said...

FY - don't hurt yourself FY!!!

laura k said...

FY stretching out all 5'1" of him!

s1c said...

Redsock - I concur, HH's last start was pretty good.

Jere said...

PAPI DONG

laura k said...

PAPI DONG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Amy said...

Go Papi!

s1c said...

PAPI DONG!!!!

Wow, he's now tied with LBJ for dongs!!!

allan said...

THE LARGE FATHER!!!!

heng brothers said...

Thanks Garland! That'll do!

allan said...

HH also had a good outing against the MFY -- but Wang stole the spotlight with the complete game 2-hitter

Benjamin said...

Cavers hate being called spelunkers, in my experience. They consider spelunking to be what idiots do who wander around caves without proper equipment or training.

Amy said...

I don't recall the last start being that great. Just that our hitters were better than theirs. But weren't there a lot of walks and base runners? As proven already tonight, my memory isn't that great...even for events from two days ago.

s1c said...

10-1 Tito pulls Sid, especially with the game now tied.

Frag, another GIDP for ON FIRE!!!, WEEI haters will be out tomorrow.

allan said...

clay v texas on monday

6 innings
5 hits
0 runs
2 walks
6 K
103 pitches

worst inning was the 2nd, got the first 2 outs, then two singles and a walk loaded the bases, but he got the third out

Amy said...

Actually, I do remember the Wang game since I was there, and you're right...Buchholz was quite good that night.

Sorry, Clay. No offense intended.

s1c said...

Do we have a nick for Hansen yet?

laura k said...

Cavers hate being called spelunkers, in my experience. They consider spelunking to be what idiots do who wander around caves without proper equipment or training.

Sounds right to me.

Plus who would want to be called a spelunker?

Benjamin said...

Jere's always gone with "Mmmbop"

Amy said...

I stand corrected. AGAIN.

This is just getting too embarrassing. But remember, I am the same age as Jim Rice....

Snuffer, Jr.?

heng brothers said...

I take that back.

Amy said...

Thanks for the understanding, guys, and yes, I will look before I leap from now on, Laura.

Jake of All Trades said...

Only an inning into his return, but more Dimmer Jr than Snuffer so far...

s1c said...

I really hate the Lablatt commercials.

Lets get the run back boys!!!

laura k said...

I know Snuffer, and Mr. Hansen, you are no Snuffer.

laura k said...

Amy, I think you just left your most recent comment on wmtc!!

laura k said...

Btw, I once did that, too. I posted a Jos gamethread comment on my own blog. And another gamethreader saw it and knew what had happened, it was very funny.

allan said...

nesn's news scroll tells me that the red sox recalled craig hansen from pawtucket today.
