G37: Red Sox 5, Tigers 1

Red Sox - 030 020 000 - 5 13 0
Tigers - 000 100 000 - 1 7 0
A flurry of activity in the second inning -- consecutive singles from Lowell, Drew, Varitek, and Crisp, a wild pitch, a Lugo HBP and an Ellsbury sac fly -- put an early dent in Verlander's evening. Youkilis clocked a two-run dong in the fifth.

Crisp had three singles in four trips, Varitek had two walks and a single, and Ellsbury, Ortiz and Lowell each had two hits.

Beckett (7-6-1-0-8, 102) was excellent, retiring his final 10 batters after the Tigers got on the board. He threw 28 pitches in the fourth, bringing his total to 71. Over the next three innings, he threw 31 (7-11-13), giving the bullpen a breather.

Hansen pitched the eighth: 4-3, 3U, P4. Delcarmen took the ninth: K, 4-3, single, F8.

***

Josh Beckett (4.19, 104 ERA+) / Justin Verlander (6.28, 67 ERA+)

Game thread should be here tonight.

This will be an interesting match-up... Beckett did not fair well in his only start vs DET (6 H, 5 R, 4 BB in 6 IPs)... but Verlander has not been good in 2008...

You'd normally expect a 2-1 pitchers duel here, but both offenses are cranked up right now... I predict # 498 for Manny and a Red Sox win.

Blake two-run double! Cleveland cuts Yank lead to 3-2.

And old friend Kelly Shoppach sigles him home. 3-3. Top 5.

I'm back and getting set up.

Stay tuned.

fuck - got the fsn/tigers assholes.

Amy said...

How was Detroit, Allan? Aside from the end of last night's game, they must have been fun games.

allan said...

guillen takes his time - lyndon nearly beat it out.

everyone at threadsox?

allan said...

we had a great time. last night sucked, but the game was fun overall. a fun 4-day trip!

i think laura will write up some stuff we saw before tuesday's game.

Sarah Haendler said...

Yeah, me too, have had the whole series. They're being almost consistent about using the home team's broadcast this year, it seems to me.

Oh, and I benched Ococ on my fantasy team today, which means he's going to have a great night - every time I do that he makes me look silly.

allan said...

seeing 3 games, you cannot expect to see more than 2 wins, really.

Amy said...

Hmm, Blogger seems to be blocking my avatar. Not a Varitek fan?

Amy said...

Well, they were two good wins and one almost win. I do hate losing after a comeback like that, but at least our bats were moving.

Amy said...

Guillen looking like Lugo!

allan said...

speaking of tek ...

last night in the 6th or so, tek fouled off 2 pitches in a row to the rf side. the first one caromed off a railing and hit something else and came to a stop right behind laura's seat. but a guy in the same row as the ball ran over and grabbed it.

then the next one was caught by a kid about 5 rows behind us on the other side of the aisle.

Amy said...

Ah, gee, a Tek ball would be something! (Innuendo perhaps unintended.)

Amy said...

Is anyone else having trouble loading esp the avatars? Or is it just me?

allan said...

i see your avatar

Amy said...

Hmm, all of them now are coming up blank with a little red x.

Beckett letting Polanco know he is not going to get away so easily tonight.

Patrick said...

Hurray! It's been awhile since I've got to chat it up with yous guys. Baseball!!

Sarah Haendler said...

I wasn't getting any avatars for a bit there, but just wrote it off to my shitty laptop or shitty internet connection, or some combination thereof. They're back now.

These fsn guys annoy me.

Rob said...

Evening, chaps.

Couple of random bullets tonight, summarizing up my thoughts:

- I hate digital cable.

- There are too many bugs for May.

- Please limit the ground balls to shortstop. Please.

allan said...

fsn - yes, they are jerks. and from the last 2 years, i know that when the tigers grab a lead, they are insufferable, talking trash and strutting around the booth.

Amy said...

Hey Patrick and Sarah! Yes, the game threads were not the same over at Threadsox. Not much chatter there.

Amy said...

I got the Tiger radio team for part of the game on XM last night as we were driving back from the Berkshires and couldn't get a Sox station. They were quite annoying.

Amy said...

Nice K, Beckett!

allan said...

yeah i checked in the morning and saw 55-60 comments.

rod allen -- fsn guy -- clearly english is not his first language.

"initially, beckett did not make that trip to japan ..."

then after ordonez's single, says that since hitting polanco, beckett has thrown 18 pitches. no, only 9.

Sarah Haendler said...

My schedule's been such this week that I haven't been home for much of the baseball. I hate when that happens. I dropped by threadsox briefly, but wasn't much use in the chatter department...

Rob said...

then after ordonez's single, says that since hitting polanco, beckett has thrown 18 pitches. no, only 9.

Makes Yogi sound normal.

allan said...

he meant he had thrown 18 total -- but again, he cannot speak the language.

Patrick said...

By the way, the Red Sox fucking rock!

Sarah Haendler said...

Ah baserunners... A significant improvement over last week.

allan said...

ingeballa!

Amy said...

GO TEK!!!

Sarah Haendler said...

And away we go!

allan said...

on fire with the wheels!!!

Rob said...

Woo hoo!

Amy said...

Ococ! Great BUNT!

Rob said...

Thank you Detroit grounds crew! That ball died right there.

allan said...

time to atone, lugo

Benjamin said...

This inning is hilarious.

allan said...

LOADED for LYNDON!

...

come on, shut these fsn shitbrains up early.

Benjamin said...

Lugo breaks up the consecutive singles with his ass. :/

Amy said...

Not much speed in those oversized quads.

allan said...

fsn praising granderson for throwing to 3B.

yeah -- real heads up play that no other OF would think about.

allan said...

he throws to third again!!

GENIUS!!!1!!!111!!

Sarah Haendler said...

Wow - hang on to your loot (lute)? And I thought the TWC commercials were bad.

Rob said...

So Allan, how was Comerica and Detroit and Windsor? How long was the drive? Broad questions, yeah. It's been awhile since I've been on a road trip to someplace I've never been. January, I think. Maybe February.

allan said...

drove straight there on monday - 3.5 hours or so to windsor.

where our friends live, it was about 30 minite drive across the border and to the park. border crossing all pretty quick. uss guards = dicks on power trips -- same as buffalo.

Rob said...

Wow. TRUPED by Joe again.

allan said...

... maybe 40 minutes.

comerica was nice. basic new nice park. ... nowhere near as nice as tiger stadium.

Sarah Haendler said...

Go ahead Tigers, just keep hitting them at Ococ. He's gonna catch 'em.

Rob said...

uss guards = dicks on power trips -- same as buffalo.

Heh... how so?

The Customs agents in northern Maine are not bad at all. Well, not since the last time I crossed, which was three years ago, amazingly. Makes me sad. I love New Brunswick.

allan said...

little things.

first night -- we say we're going to the game. "yeah? can i see your tickets?"

second night -- he already knows we are both US citizens and live in mississauga and are visiting friends in windsor. looks at our passports: "so, how do you two know each other?" ... he was obviously doing this because he saw we have different last names.

a guard at the buffalo border last year actually asked L why she did not have my last name if we were married?!?!?!?

just little things -- to act like assholes. because they can. if you talk back, they can deny you/us entry into the country.

canada guards never do anything like this.

allan said...

first night -- we both are wearing baseball shirts, i have a cap on, we say we're going to the game -- "yeah? lemme see your tickets" -- so we have to fish them out of the back seat.

Amy said...

Although it rarely happens, it annoys me no end that people ask me if I am really married since I kept my name. Our kids have hyphenated names, which is a whole other story.

So are you guys really married? :)

allan said...

So are you guys really married? :)

No.

Amy said...

Orsillo is saying the first games he went to at Fenway in 78 Remy went 0-11. Must make Remy feel really old.

allan said...

Rod: "Derek Lowell"

????

Amy said...

So are you guys really married? :)

No.

LOL, that'll teach those border guards!!

Joe Grav said...

I find that 80% of people with a badge tend to constantly be on horrendous power trips.

Good morning folks, I just woke up from a semi-satisfying nap.

Amy said...

Still in finals, Joe?

allan said...

L back from driving our dogsitter home. She says hello!

Joe Grav said...

Yup... I just have to finish my aforementioned immigration essays, and take a chemistry final on Monday. It's almost ovah.

Sarah Haendler said...

I find that 80% of people with a badge tend to constantly be on horrendous power trips.

And the less important the badge, the bigger the trip. There's this one security guard at Brooklyn College...

The last time I was in Canada (three years ago maybe?) we had a similar experience. The Canadians were friendly and welcoming and the US guys were incredibly suspicious of us.

Joe Grav said...

How's Beckett looking so far

Joe Grav said...

And the less important the badge, the bigger the trip. There's this one security guard at Brooklyn College.

Ain't that the truth. I find that there is not a stadium I've ever been to where I've not been accosted by stadium security.

Granted, I have been obnoxious from time to time, but I'm fairly mellow now for the most part, and I still have constant run ins with a-holes w/ plastic badges, gigantic egos, and minimum wage jobs

allan said...

and we're a white couple in our mid-40s.

i wonder how they act towards young brown men...

Joe Grav said...

Can't trust the sneaky canuck menace

Amy said...

I don't have much occasion to deal with people with badges except when traveling. That is never pleasant.

One that got away from Coco.

allan said...

if anything, wouldn't we be a "sleeper" american cell sent north of the border, just keeping quiet and waiting for the signal to bust shit up?

Amy said...

I thought you had the chem final, Joe. Or was that just a test?

I am grading final exams. Be nice to your professors!

Amy said...

I like that image, Allan. I can see Cody and Tala as the bomb sniffing terrorist dogs.

Joe Grav said...

I can't tell you how many times I've heard "Canada has more terrorist cells than any other country..." I don't have access to the facts, but I'm going to straight-up assume that one is a lie.

allan said...

Can't trust the sneaky canuck menace

there is a lot of oil and fresh water up here. the usa will be turning its attention here sooner or later.

Joe Grav said...

the last chem thing was just a run-of-the-mill exam, this one's a final

have fun grading finals, that must be a blast

allan said...

"Canada has more terrorist cells than any other country..."

The CIA is based in Canada?

Amy said...

Plus all those comedians and musicians we need to keep our entertainment industry growing.

Joe Grav said...

I'm thinking the Yukon will be a nice place to put GWB and president Cheney in exile. When I'm president that's what'll happen. Sorry Canucks.

allan said...

Fox is a big one for that terrorist claim. O'Reilly and his braindead ilk. So yeah, go with "lie".

Amy said...

Oh, yeah, grading. Love it.

I always say that I teach for free and get paid for grading exams.

Joe Grav said...

Meanwhile, come on Beckett.

Amy said...

One more strike, Beckett. Let's get out of this.

Joe Grav said...

I've even heard it from mildly respectable sources, but they probably get their info from the government. I guess it depends on what you define as a terrorist group. I mean, I think PETA (as much as I loathe their tactics) is on there for no good reason, the Quakers have been spied on, Nelson Mandela is on the terrorist watch list, etc.

So who knows? Maybe there are a ton of 'terrorists' in Canada. Like that damn Celine Dion.

!@#!# base hit Detroit

Sarah Haendler said...

So who knows? Maybe there are a ton of 'terrorists' in Canada. Like that damn Celine Dion.

Potent weapon, that one.

Joe Grav said...

K!

allan said...

if they know there are groups of terrorists in canada, why don't they have the terrorists arrested?

i assume if bush called harper and gave him the addresses, he'd do it -- anything for his bff.

Joe Grav said...

What??!?!?! Are you suggesting that we would arrest anyone without probable cause?!?!?!!!! That is just silly, sir!

Patrick said...

LBJ time

Joe Grav said...

Yeagh!

Joe Grav said...

And that's the way to get it stahhhted.

Here comes the SB

Patrick said...

I hate how big this park is. It's a big contrast to the quirky fields of Fenway.

Joe Grav said...

What pitch will he go on?

Joe Grav said...

He'll go here.

Sarah Haendler said...

i assume if bush called harper and gave him the addresses, he'd do it -- anything for his bff.

Patrick said...

WHOLY SHIT! SWEATY DONGS FOR EVERYONE!

Sarah Haendler said...

Boy, Youk is a friggin' monster these days.

allan said...

a couple of fans behind us last night (sox fans, i think) referred to yook as "a sweat machine"

... like an RBI machine, perhaps.

Gambrinus said...

I normally get confused for half a second on home games because it always sounds like they're booing Yook, but they're just yelling 'YOOOK!' Today it's the opposite, and I'm more confused.

andy said...

is sweat now synonymous with RBI?

allan said...

there are a fair amount of sox fans yooking it up there in this series.

Patrick said...

Time for Beckett to get to business.

Joe Grav said...

Youkilis is so. awesome.

Patrick said...

2 outs, time to let a few man on.

andy said...

can you rewrite the james brown lyrics to say Sweat Machine?

andy said...

Get up, (get on up)
Stay on the scene, (get on up), like a sex machine, (get on up)

Patrick said...

Celts have a 14 point lead with 3min left in the third...

Joe Grav said...

They are about to blow them out patrick. A few buckets here and it's over

Patrick said...

I like that 'King' Lebron has to suffer defeat like the rest of us peons. I want the Celts to put him away and beat him up doing it. The guy could use a humble pie.

allan said...

Bwahahah! Joe C. said the Yanks are bringing up Kei Igawa!

Joe Grav said...

HaHAHAHAHA KEI IGAWA

allan said...

L wants to note that she wrote about the amp runner in the FSN Lincoln commercial when she (runner) was a teenager.

Joe Grav said...

Kei Igawa is a running joke between my friends and me, we say 'Kei Igawa' to represent failure or hilarity.

allan said...

i thought igawa was old news. didn't he come up for kennedy?

allan said...

FY: "get the fuck out of my way!"

heng brothers said...

What does FSN stand for? The TV station?

allan said...

Patrick said...

Theres no one I feel more confident about being in the batters box with men in scoring position that J.D.

Let's watch as he brings them home...

Amy said...

Of course, Fox Sports Network. Oh, God, I love looking dumb.

Patrick said...

Oh ya, that J.D. Drew.

allan said...

Let's watch as he brings them home...

did he bring them home on the nesn feed?

Amy said...

You mean the score isn't 7-1 on FSN?

Patrick said...

Yahoo has pooped out. It's stuck on Youk's at bat.

Patrick said...

This game might call for some cooked white bread.

allan said...

4 K for granderson -- that's a golden shower, right?

he's been a K machine this series.

Joe Grav said...

BECKETT. :D

Joe Grav said...

Ummm I think the term is golden sombrero lol

Patrick said...

Jere said...

Granderson pulling a lot of borderline "catch the ball!"s in the last few innings.

Patrick said...

Jere said...

I only know Windsor from that riddle: What city lies due north of Windsor, Canada?--Detroit.

allan said...

casey -- there are casinos in windsor. and teenagers from detroit come over to drink (lower age)
