G41: Twins 7, Red Sox 3

Red Sox - 300 000 000 - 3 12 1
Twins - 202 030 00x - 7 11 0
Buchholz struggled again (4.1-8-7-5-4, 90) and the Red Sox's early 3-0 lead -- helped by Manny Ramirez's #498 career home run -- vanished.

Unlike Sunday night, there was no comeback. Although Minnesota retired the Red Sox in order only once, Boston had no runner advance past second base from the second to the ninth innings. Indeed, after the first, only three Red Sox made it past first.

J.D. Drew went 3-for-4 and Alex Cora and Manny each had two hits. Craig Hansen pitched a perfect seventh inning -- two groundouts and a strikeout on 13 pitches.

Tampa beat New York 7-1 -- and are now .5 GB Boston in the East.

***

Clay Buchholz (4.50, 97 ERA+) / Livan Hernandez (3.83, 104 ERA+)

Buchholz has a drastic home/road split this year:
GS ERA IP H R HR BB SO BABIP
Home 3 1.04 17.1 14 2 0 9 15 .298
Road 4 7.40 20.2 27 18 3 6 24 .381
2nd-place Tampa hosts the .500 Yankees, also at 7 PM (Pettitte/Garza).

For those of you interested in the "what was Bot explaining to Jeemer at Comerica?" story, we've had a very cool development.

First go here, then go here.

Not only are there more photos and videos, but the person who took them is in my own post about the batting practice we saw.

(And what are the odds... her name is Joy.)

Probably a good time to sit the man with the woodchuck attached to his chin.

Note: Moderation will be on tonight.

laura k said...

Ack! ESPN tonight. I haven't seen NESN in ages.

s1c said...

Espn? I hope it isn't JM!!

laura k said...

Thankfully he's only on Sunday nights. But Steve Phillips is no picnic.

Jere said...

If you had the top of the first in your "When will Remy say the word 'eephus'? pool, you win!"

Almost another dong for Coco!

laura k said...

Ococ knock!

allan said...

ococ si no erif

s1c said...

!!!ocoC

Would be nice to get on top of these guys and just pound them tonight.

Jere said...

Morgan only does Sunday night.

As far as I know.

Benjamin said...

Off to the races.

I found some working wifi, so I get to join folks tonight.

Amy said...

Great for Coco! He sure is making his mark these days.

allan said...

BUNT????????????????

are you fucking kidding me???

cut that shit out!

Jere said...

Dustin barely out on NESN's views.

Benjamin said...

What's this sacrifice crap?

Amy said...

I think he beat it.

Moderation on tonight?

laura k said...

Amy, it's necessary.

Jere said...

Love when Papi goes Oppy

Amy said...

I love when we score in the first inning.

nixon33 said...

why is it that i always have to "sign up" again, instead of just logging in? so weird.

1-0.
tavarez and not timlin?
hmmm

Benjamin said...

Getting spammed on non-game threads during games?

Run(s) are good.

s1c said...

Watched a little bit of the Monster Monday on NESN - Remy thinks the weak spot on this team is the middle relief with SS being the second trouble spot. I think I could agree with that assesment.

Papi brings him home!!!

laura k said...

it's worse than that.

Jere said...

dong

Jere said...

s1c said...

MUMMY!!!

Dong!!!

allan said...

no troll talk please.

laura k said...

498!!!

Benjamin said...

Sweet. Too bad about the sacrifice, eh.

Laura: what's in papelbon's back pockets in that gambling video? It looks pointy.

laura k said...

Phil: it's a bottle of water.

Zenslinger said...

There he goes...trotting the bases...yes, ladies and gentlemen: the best Left Fielder ever to play for the Red Sox.

I love Manny. I did not love Manny in 2003-4 the way I love him today.

laura k said...

i too love the bad man

Benjamin said...

Besides the waterbottle, I mean. It's pointy on the right butt cheek. Just slack from having his pants stretched to accomodate the bottle?

laura k said...

a mel ott mention on espn

Amy said...

So why Tavarez and not Timlin? Any theories?

s1c said...

ON FIRE!!!

Jere said...

let's bat around

nixon33 said...

I love Manny. I did not love Manny in 2003-4 the way I love him today.

AMEN. same here.

Benjamin said...

So Livan's ridiculously low BABIP... not so sustainable.

Jere said...

were the announcers getting bored and doing the x-word?

s1c said...

So why Tavarez and not Timlin? Any theories?

Probably because they were trying to trade him (if the rumors were true).

laura k said...

jere, ha :)

Benjamin said...

Tavarez is useless and nobody likes him. Timlin is useless and Francona likes him.

Honestly, Timlin has more upside.

laura k said...

i wanna see # 500 tonight!

Jere said...

"I love Manny. I did not love Manny in 2003-4 the way I love him today."

Always loved him the same: a whole effin' lot.

allan said...

tek = statue.

looking, looking, looking.

...

ott was mentioned re manny's dong. manny is 13 or so away from him. manny one back of eddie murray.

laura k said...

me too

always loved him.

Jere said...

I got the Manny jersey the winter we got him. Granted it was a replica. But they were only 50 bucks back then. I still wear it--even though there's a permanent Sharpie mark on it from Veteran's Stadium.

Benjamin said...

DFA can also be a prelude to a trade, and there's been plenty of trade talk with Colorado. I haven't seen any speculation about any interest in Timlin. (Maybe Milwaukee needs a new closer for their new committee.)

allan said...

i have loved manny since 1993, but really loved him since 2001.

Zenslinger said...

Timlin vs. Tavarez

I think it also has to do with what's expected of each. They believe Timlin can still get the 3 outs in a relatively low-leverage situation. Tavarez's advantages have been nullified: Aardsma's a better long man, and several others are better backup starters.

allan said...

bow before the curve, twins!!!

Jere said...

Wow, a big shot at that dude, as Remy says DON has a better swing than the one Gomez just took.

Amy said...

What is Timlin's upside over Tavarez? Tavarez has started, he has done long relief; Timlin hasn't done either or not in a long time. Both are unreliable, but at least Tavarez has more versatility.

Amy said...

Manny defines loveable.

laura k said...

For a while there, many Red Sox fans hated him.

Benjamin said...

If the Sox plane goes down over the everglades, Timlin would be better equipped to bag Papi some gator and roast it on a spit.

laura k said...

And that's important in a pitcher.

Benjamin said...

I didn't know any Sox fans (as distinguished from Sox-covering columnists) who hated Manny. The furthest anyone got was questioning whether he was providing a good return on his (then-high, now-typical) salary.

laura k said...

Well, fans on this blog used to rag on Manny.

allan said...

Papi would roast Timlin on a spit. Might be a little chewy and gamey, but it would keep him alive.

Benjamin said...

Everyone gets ragged on. I've been reading this blog for years, and nothing stands out, but maybe I have selective memory.

Amy said...

Oh, come on. Let's not give up the lead....

laura k said...

Or maybe I do. But this wasn't ragged on in the way everyone gets ragged on. This was real anti-Manny stuff. I thought so anyway.

Zenslinger said...

Well, fans on this blog used to rag on Manny.

Damn their filthy hides!

Benjamin said...

:(

nixon33 said...

just JD being Trot.

Jere said...

As for Fenway reaction--it seems like you always had the one fan in your section who'd yell at Manny to hustle or whatever, and I'd just assume the guy read Dirt Dogs the day before and was told he should hate Manny. But the for the most part the at-the-park love was always there, as opposed to your call-in show people and journalists.

laura k said...

do call-in show ppl = anonymous commenters?

Jere said...

yes, your anonymous internet types, too

Jere said...

also, racists have always hated Manny and still do

Zenslinger said...

And according to today's reports, our next head-scratcher is going to be: Colon or Buchholz?

Benjamin said...

Sack up, maybe?

Jere said...

Should be a 27-18 Red Sox win!

laura k said...

"also, racists have always hated Manny and still do"

that's where the lazy thing comes in. but you already mentioned dirt dogs.

Benjamin said...

Yes, like that.

allan said...

And then the national media would come into Boston, read CHB and his ilk and tune into EEI and hear the mouthbreathers, and go on to report than Red Sox fans are tired of Manny.

Even though Manny always got huge cheers at Fenway.

Jere said...

Pettitte's no-no is history. (1 2/3)

Benjamin said...

Why would racists hate him? It isn't like he's a highly paid and successful dark-pigmentned athlete with dreadlocks and a winsome smile.

nixon33 said...

1-0 cowbells at the trop

laura k said...

i do love those dreads and that smile!

(what a heartbreaker for andy)

Jere said...

Yeah that's when I realized it's best to ignore certain media: The media was telling me we all hated Manny, yet I'd go to Fenway and 30,000 people would cheer him loudly over and over.

nixon33 said...

heidi pulling a chevy chase a la spies like us

Benjamin said...

It must be sad to be racist sox fans these days. It's been a while since they could root four most of our position players. With Matsusaka, they can't even root for a racially pure pitching rotation.

Jere said...

A Jonny Gomes stolen base leads to a Rays run, 1-0 TB.

laura k said...

i bet you already knew to ignore certain media

laura k said...

racists fan can always console themselves that those people are just good at sports

Jere said...

"bet you already knew to ignore certain media"

well...yeah

Jere said...

technical foul!

Benjamin said...

Let's see if FY sac-bunts with two outs.

nixon33 said...

Jere said...

laura k said...

question for you all, do you see something in HH's face that tells you he is pitching against himself, rather than competing?

no?

i didn't think so.

steve phillips does.

Jere said...

Adam Everroyo. (same face as Bronson. Sorry if this has come up before)

laura k said...

really? i like bronson's face. i'll take a look.

Jere said...

Was that the guy some say is faster than Jacoby? Because he almost got doubled up on that play.

laura k said...

he is supposed to be very fast.

also he's papi's little guy, supposedly.

allan said...

everett's on base % is .231. still can't believe he whacked a dong last night.

i can't see steve phillips's face, but i can tell he's full of shit.

Benjamin said...

Better than the first inning.

Benjamin said...

Maybe this is Timlin's upside?

Jere said...

Is ESPN showing the ball-marking stuff, too?

laura k said...

no ball marking here. what's up?

allan said...

but we just dfa'd our bowler.

Jere said...

They're showing how the bat boy goes out to the ump with special marked balls for the ump when Manny comes up, then takes them back and puts them in the "Manny box" under his chair after the at bat. Since the milestone HR is coming up. Standard practice nowadays for MLB.

Benjamin said...

Imagine how many runs we could score if we didn't spot our opponents two outs before starting a rally.

laura k said...

thanks jere. i figured it was b/c of manny's 500 but they weren't showing it on espin.

Benjamin said...

They spot us outs. We spot them baserunners.

allan said...

phillips calls HH a junkballer

amazing, these guys can get a top paying job and do no research, no prep work, and be as ignorant as fuck.

what a country.

laura k said...

that doesn't seem fair

laura k said...

i mean what phil said, not what allan said.

Benjamin said...

:(

Patrick said...

This is upsetting.

laura k said...

yes

we are doomed

Jere said...

Here's a video I made with a great Castig/Trup call of the play where Tavarez dove at the guy at on second from the mound when time was out. Rare to hear Trup and Castig cracking up like that. (The video is just shots I took of the two of them at Fenway--better than a blank screen.) I love the sound of the guy in the background losing it.

laura k said...

jere, i'll have to remember to look at it tomorrow.

allan said...

hey espn -- if HH is throwing too many breaking balls and getting knocked around, why don't you mention that one way to stop that might be FOR THE CATCHER TO START CALLING FOR OTHER KINDS OF PITCHES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

(thank fucking god our GM is not steve phillips. )

laura k said...

STEVE PHILLIPS PLEASE SHUT UP YOU ARE SUCH A MORON WHY DO YOU EVEN HAVE A JOB SHUT UP SHUT UP

they rag on clay for allowing 3 (now 4) runs but praise livan for pitching as he does and allowing 3 runs -- makes sense.

Benjamin said...

GDGD still thinks it's 3-3 after the inning's ended. Can we keep that score?

orel says he had 8 career SB and 2 triples

...

wow -- dead right. 8 SB and 3 3B!

he was 8 for 11 in SB attempts.

laura k said...

yeah, what's up with that? it's a tad too early to consider tb a serious threat.

Jere said...

When Hershiser and Sax were on LA, did everyone say "Orel Sax" a lot, or was that just at my house?

Zenslinger said...

1-2-3! Hurrah.

laura k said...

jere, splain the mel's diner thing again? is it ott?

Jere said...

9mayor: I was from the "slums" of Fairfield County...not the "gold coast." 84 territory, not 95.

Sarah Haendler said...

Hmmm... maybe I should go back to work. I liked the score better when I was there! No worries though, Manny's going to be a bad man again here.

Also, why do I always miss Coco doing cool stuff? Seriously, I'm always on the train or in a show when he justifies my irrational love.

Jere said...

yes, Mel OTT

allan said...

5-zip, Pettitte losin' it in the 4th

with the yanks a .500 club this year, am i going to do a S-post every time they lose? that could add up. not sure how to proceed.....

Jere said...

Clay letting it Flo now

9casey said...

I don't in anyway want the Rays to catch the Sox , but if thay can somehow finish in 2nd place......Good for them.

Jere said...

"S-posts" are fun!

laura k said...

it would be very cool if tb could finish 2!

Jere said...

5 runs on 8 hits thru 4 for Andy

laura k said...

unassisted triple play in cleveland against the jays. those are the best!

Jere said...

I would be very happy if the Rays finished ahead of the Yanks no matter what places they were in. Can you imagine Hank after that season??

Jere said...

the ass dribbler got the UTP. I was hoping it was a brak brak brak.

laura k said...

they showed it but we couldn't figure out the 3rd out. we only saw 2.

allan said...

brak x3 = tirple paly?

laura k said...

i remember randy velarde (as an A) turning a UTP against the yankees. it took me like 3 or 4 replays to figure out all the outs.

Jere said...

Clay is "fresh off his first 2-3 outing" --Don

9casey said...

The video is on gameday..catch , tag base, tag runner..

Jere said...

laura k said...

right, we saw that, but who is the out when he steps on the base? is it a force? and if so, how?

laura k said...

RV

9casey said...

runners were on first and second

Jere said...

NESN just showed it. He caught it, touched second--and the guy you saw just past second was the runner on first originally, as both runners were running on the pitch. So he tagged that guy for the 3rd out.

Jere said...

yeah the touching of second was an out because the guy who had been on 2nd was around 3rd at that point

laura k said...

ah-ha. leave it to espn to not say that or show it. thanks.

Benjamin said...

Bleh. Bleh I say.

laura k said...
