Royals - 000 000 000 - 0 0 1

JON LESTER PITCHES A NO-HITTER!!!

9-0-0-2-9, 130 -- and he was hitting his spots all night long!

It's the first no-hitter by a Red Sox left-hander since Mel Parnell did it against the White Sox on July 14, 1956.

***

Luke Hochevar (3.94, 108 ERA+) / Jon Lester (3.95, 109 ERA+)

MLB.com:
Hochevar wasn't at his sharpest last Wednesday night but he still managed to shut out the Tigers for six innings, giving up just four singles. He showed an ability to work out of jams ... This was his fifth start since being called up from Triple-A Omaha on April 20. In all but his first outing, he's pitched six or seven solid innings. With an effective sinker, he's been good at inducing ground balls...
Hochevar has never faced any hitter on the Red Sox. ... Seven Royals are a combined 4-for-27 (.148/.273/.148) against Lester.

Tampa visits Oakland at 10 PM. The Yankees have the day off.

UPDATE: Nice short Q&A with hitting coach Dave Magadan about how David Ortiz began hitting off a batting tee for the first time on May 1. Since then, he has hit .354 and has been spraying the ball all over the field.

laura k said...

You I have been working on my succinctness.

I'm sure Allan wishes I'd do that, too.

Benjamin said...

Jacoby will not be deterred.

Rob said...

DOOT DOOT DOOOOO I'M GONNA STEAL THIRD AGAIN!

I AM JACOBY ELLSBURY!

laura k said...

You cannot catch him!!!

(Even though he was caught the other day...)

Joe Grav said...

by the time the pitch is out of his hand he's halfway to 3rd base. wow

Benjamin said...

Steal home. Do it.

laura k said...

JG with the 201!

Rob said...

Meanwhile, Pedroia stands at the plate, eating a sammich.

laura k said...

yeah, steal home!!!!

Remy: Somebody told me Dolly Parton's in the house tonight.

Don: Stop it.

laura k said...

No Jerry, it's just someone in a bad wig.

Rob said...

Dolly Anderson. Pamela Parton. That girl was a hybrid.

laura k said...

Hey, Dolly Parton is actually really smart and talented. (Seriously, she is.)

That was just some nobody in a bad wig.

Benjamin said...

Both of them are talented at what they've tried to do.

laura k said...

That may be so. I don't know anything about Anderson, really.

I just know Parton had a really tough life of being judged by boobs alone. And those are all hers! Not easy to grow up like that.

nick said...

geesum... he just keeps at it. 2SB. wonder what the most SB by a single player in a single game was. Shouldn't be that hard, but I don't know BR's interface well enough to figure it out.

laura k said...

Someone answer Nick's q...? I wonder too but I'm busy drinking wine and typing.

Benjamin said...

You're not going to argue that Parton's boobs are real, are you? She's admitted to having lot of plastic surgery.

Amy said...

I don't know BR's interface well enough to figure it out.

Nick, I am relieved to hear that. I find it rather user-unfriendly. That's why I am always asking people here (mostly Allan) to answer questions.

laura k said...

She's had plastic surgery later in life, for sure. But all her early life and singing career they were all real. She grew up poor, how would she have had plastic surgery?

I'm not arguing it, I'm stating it as fact.

allan said...

Most SB in a game - 7.

That was in the NL in the 1890s.

Since 1900

AL: Eddie Collins - 6
9/11/12 and 9/22/12

NL: Otis Nixon - 6
6/16/91

nick said...

yeah, I just went over tried a few things, felt dumb and thought I'd just ask rather than showing off my (not so) astounding research skills. What a failed research librarian I turned out to be.

The site seems so good, I just have not figured out how to grok its interface.

laura k said...

I mean, she's over 60 y/o. Of course they don't stand up on their own anymore. But she was performing at a very young age, and just as big. She's talked a lot about what a burden it was growing up.

Joe Grav said...

damn you wind

Benjamin said...

Looks like it's 4.

Guys with 7 SB:

George Gore, June 25, 1881
Billy Hamilton August 31, 1894

Most in an inning: 3
By many players, but the last time in the NL?
Dusty Baker ... that base clogger

Benjamin said...

Of course I misread "SB" as "2B". I'm clever.

Rob said...

What makes 7 SB's in a game so astounding is that you need to reach base a ton for that to happen. You'd need to reach base four times at least and steal second and third for three of those four. Or you could just reach seven times and steal seven times. That would be monumental.

allan said...

Most times stealing from first to home in an inning, career:

AL: Ty Cobb, 4 times
NL: Honus Wagner, 3 times.

Last NL player to do it: Dusty Baker, June 27, 1984, 3rd inning

Last AL player to do it: Devon White, September 9, 1989, 6th inning

laura k said...

cool theft stats

nick said...

stealing from 1st to home...that's pretty cool. and to have done it 4 times. wow.

nick said...

I've ignored emma for a bit too long. thanks for the cool stats.

later.

laura k said...

Figures it was Cobb too. I like it.

laura k said...

Bye Nick, say hi to Emma for me.

allan said...

That stuff is from my copy of TSN Record Book, which is from 1996. I assume those records still stand though.

laura k said...

Another Mel OTT inning for Lester.

allan said...

6 innings for lester .... you know ...

Joe Grav said...

Very efficient.

Rob said...

Bagels on the scoreboard for Lester!

Joe Grav said...

No, I don't know.

Benjamin said...

Solid work.

Joe Grav said...

beautiful people in that beautiful landscape making delicious beer

Rob said...

Me, to my dad: "Lester's got his A game tonight. 6th inning, 0 runs. Not many hits..."

Joe Grav said...

.......but Russia beat Canada in the world hockey championships. Take that Canada.

Benjamin said...

Hush, Allan.

laura k said...

5-4 in OT, what a heartbreaker. What, big Russia fan, are you?

Joe Grav said...

I'm pretty impressed with Hochaver's stuff. Without that error it would be a 2 runs right?

laura k said...

Every time Don says "Hoshaver" I hear "Ho Chi Minh".

Joe Grav said...

Definitely not, I was rooting for Canada, but I appreciate a good upset.

laura k said...

Hush everyone!

Rob said...

Meh. No hockey world championship on my TV.

Rob said...

Hush about what?

Joe Grav said...

it did get rather quiet in here, and at fenway

Rob said...

BOOOOOOOOOOM.

LET THE DONGS OUTSIDE!

laura k said...

CAPTAIN DONG!!

(Now that's a surprise!)

Joe Grav said...

no idea, ish

and i paid 4.95 to get the whole tournament online. as an added bonus i got the archived coverage of the world curling and rowing championships... yay...?

TEK SUPERDONG!

laura k said...

Hush about the scoreboard and what you don't see on it.

Just about the only superstition we go for in this house!

Joe Grav said...

91 MPH fastball at the knees right over the plate... perfect.

Joe Grav said...

Jackobee time

Rob said...

Yes, mom.

laura k said...

and i paid 4.95 to get the whole tournament online. as an added bonus i got the archived coverage of the world curling and rowing championships... yay...?

Too funny. Hopefully you got your $5 worth.

Curling is cool. I could never watch a whole tournament, but I find the sport strangely mesmerizing.

I also like it cuz it's very old and similar to many other old games, like bocce.

Rob said...

It's still not Tribe Time.

laura k said...

Yes, mom.

Ack! Sorry. :)

It's not just me. Your father says the same thing. Now clean up your room and take out the trash.

Joe Grav said...

"strangely mesmerizing" is the best word for it.

My friend and I were so "strangely mesmerized" that we actually went to two matches of the World Championships that were, oddly enough, held in Lowell, MA a few months after the '06 olympics.

It's pretty cool, and it's actually one of those things that gets more enjoyable if you watch it for a long time.

Joe Grav said...

Also, confirming my suspicion, it sucked in person without the Canadian experts explaining all the scheming and strategizing

laura k said...

Is that supposed to be a black screen?

Joe Grav said...

where's the strike call blue

laura k said...

Joe, I could see that. It's also supposed to be really fun to play, something totally non-athletic people like me can have fun with.

Cool that you went to matches. I haven't been aware of curling long enough to know all the terminlogy and rules and stuff. I'd like to though.

Joe Grav said...

ughh pitch count

laura k said...

I am getting very nervous.

Joe Grav said...

I've only seen it during the olympics, and at those two random matches.

The curling crowd was pretty fun, they had a big hospitality tent outside with lots of food and canadian-flavored merriment.

laura k said...

Is Amy still here? Wish I could call her and tell her to watch.

Amy said...

I need an off topic distraction. That's why I have been quiet. Hate tension.

allan said...

7 outs to go -- but he's at 92 pitches.

Joe Grav said...

nervous about what? it's 7-0 :)

Joe Grav said...

cmon jon.

Amy said...

I am watching. I am just superstitious. Harvey actually is the one who noticed. Not me.

Joe Grav said...

UGHHHH

laura k said...

Oh great, glad you are still here. I love the tension. I can't stand it but I love it.

Sometimes I have to leave the room and walk around.

Joe Grav said...

YEAHHH!!!

I do the same thing L but I'm afraid to move from my seat

Amy said...

What amazes me is how my heart can pound.

During the 04 post-season I worried that I would have a heart attack my heart pounded so heavily.

And some people say, "It's just a game." Tell that to my heart.

allan said...

97 thru 7.

Jack Marshall said...

He's gonna do it. This is the perfect team for Lester.

Patrick said...

I almost want our hitters to go down 1-2-3 just to get back to the action.

Rob said...

Is that supposed to be a black screen?

Yep.

I'm starting to get vocal about these recent happenings.

Joe Grav said...

=) hahaha yeah. i LOVE that feeling of tension and nervousness. absolutely love it.

laura k said...

Just a game, what do they know.

I know, it gets so tense I can hardly breathe. I don't know how the players do it.

laura k said...

Joe, me too. It's such pure baseball.

Patrick said...

Johan who?

laura k said...

Remy: "...started the season in Omahar".

allan said...

Just thinking how much fun the last 2 innings of the Clay game was! I think there was no more than 10 of us!

Joe Grav said...

come on manny

Patrick said...

I feel like Manny might really bust out after he gets by the angst which is 500.

Rob said...

Time to get nervous again.

Joe Grav said...

ok, go time

Joe Grav said...

me? nervous? Y

laura k said...

NESN skipped the commercials last year in HH's also, they love the dramatic. I wonder if they have Lester on a pitch count?

i missed it too - was at work - but watched the last 3 innings at home.

laura k said...

Me too Amy!! First ever seen from start to finish.

The 2 NYY perfect games in the 90s, we were at work w/ no radio or TV, only GDGD. I don't count those.

You know we had tickets to a game that turned out to be a no-hitter... and didn't go.
