Royals - 000 000 000 - 0 0 1
Red Sox - 005 002 00x - 7 5 1
JON LESTER PITCHES A NO-HITTER!!!

9-0-0-2-9, 130 -- and he was hitting his spots all night long!

It's the first no-hitter by a Red Sox left-hander since Mel Parnell did it against the White Sox on July 14, 1956.

***

Luke Hochevar (3.94, 108 ERA+) / Jon Lester (3.95, 109 ERA+)

MLB.com:
Hochevar wasn't at his sharpest last Wednesday night but he still managed to shut out the Tigers for six innings, giving up just four singles. He showed an ability to work out of jams ... This was his fifth start since being called up from Triple-A Omaha on April 20. In all but his first outing, he's pitched six or seven solid innings. With an effective sinker, he's been good at inducing ground balls...
Hochevar has never faced any hitter on the Red Sox. ... Seven Royals are a combined 4-for-27 (.148/.273/.148) against Lester.

Tampa visits Oakland at 10 PM. The Yankees have the day off.

UPDATE: Nice short Q&A with hitting coach Dave Magadan about how David Ortiz began hitting off a batting tee for the first time on May 1. Since then, he has hit .354 and has been spraying the ball all over the field.

Nuts, I wish I could have seen the whole game but b-fly and bh would have been pissed if I had skipped the induction ceremony.

Good for Lester!!!

Dietcokegirl! Where have you been all season? Why can't you post? Work?

s1c said...

that started w/ the HH game. that's when it became a magical season for me.

Have been thinking about this season in that way. After all the crazy travel, starting the season off with no days off for three weeks, the flu epidemic, etc. Its amazing these guys have done as well as they have.

laura k said...

it's a holiday here and people are doing fireworks outside. one of our dogs is afraid. and then we start yelling! poor girl.

Jake of All Trades said...

YES!!

Been afraid to look at the game thread. This is the first "real" one I've seen on tv. Watched the Matt Young game, but was doing radio for Nomo, Lowe, and Bucholz.

Rob said...

Now I guess I can go pee.

I peed like, 8 times the last 10 minutes! I guess that's what happens when I get nervous, lmao.

oh and yah work too (if work = WoW) ah-hah!! lvl60 night elf warrior((

ps. i'm not a mom btw. lol.

laura k said...

NHS, nice. I still have my little gold thingy from that.

Think of it this way, if you had been here for the game, it might not have happened.

That's what Allan tells me about the tickets we didn't use that turned out to be a no-hitter.

s1c said...

night elf warrior((

No surprise there!!!

WOW - will have to get involved in that again once b-fly is off to college.

laura k said...

new sweetheart, that's a good thing to be busy with. i see your comments now and again.

Amy said...

I think I heard parts of a Nolan Ryan no hitter back in the olden days, but never watched a whole game. Closest thing was the Seaver record setting strikeout game I listened to at the beach at Rye Playland almost 40 years ago. And that was on the radio.

Zenslinger said...

Well, I feel like an asshole for saying he had thrown too many pitches early. But his count was kind of high.

I was the only Sox fan in the Bar to celebrate. But that was cool.

My brother calls me with two outs in the ninth asking about negotiations for him to sell his first screenplay. I was like, "I'll call you in a few minutes!"

Rob said...

Umpire Bob Davidson, on last night's blown home run call for Carlos Delgado on the Mets/Yankees game.

"I fucked it up. I'm the one who thought it was a fucking foul ball. I saw it on the replay. I'm the one who fucked it up so you can put that in your paper. Bolts and nuts, I fucked up. You've just got to move on. No one feels worse about it than I do."

Amy said...

Congrats to your daughter, S1C! That's terrific.

And congrats to you, TDCG!

All good news tonight!

thatdietcokegirl said...

WOW - will have to get involved in that again once b-fly is off to college.

new sweetheart, that's a good thing to be busy with. i see your comments now and again.

'tis :))

the beach at rye playland - memories in itself.

the other day i was singing the commercial for palisades amusement park. funny how that stuff just stays in your brain for 40 years.

Benjamin said...

At Cooperstown, they have a wall of baseballs (final out balls, I think) and player photos for each no-hitter. This is the first one since Buchholz's, so they'll be next to each other forever.

laura k said...

My brother calls me with two outs in the ninth asking about negotiations for him to sell his first screenplay. I was like, "I'll call you in a few minutes!"

LOL. I can't even stand when our phone rings during a regular game. I always think, who is calling me during a game??

s1c said...

look me up on cairne if you do (edelgard is my main) we could instance together and pwn some hordies;))

Will do!!!

Amy said...

I remember that jingle!

Rye Playland has lots of meaning for me, as a place I loved as a kid, but more so, for the Seaver game and MOST importantly, it's where Harvey and I went on our first "date" once we went from friends to being a couple.

Amy said...

The Seaver game, btw, was in high school, years before I met Harvey.

laura k said...

it's where Harvey and I went on our first "date" once we went from friends to being a couple.

Oh very cool!!

"Ride the coaster get cool in the waves in the pool you'll have fun so come on over"

Amy said...

Tek has the MLB record for catching no hitters! Who knew?

laura k said...

that's cool! how many? (tek)

s1c said...

Actually, I think that is the record for most No-nos with different pitchers.

Gambrinus said...

crap, i completely forgot to watch tonight's game and then i see the box score! how could i miss it??

sigh. at least i got to see buchholz last year.

Amy said...

4

Yogi Berra has 3.

I didn't catch the rest of the names.

I am sure Allan will give us a list. :)

laura k said...

so what are both records? how many no-hitters caught at all, then how many for tek?

SoSock said...

Wow, quite a night I gather.
Came home about 15 minutes ago, kissed the wife and the grandkid, flipped on ESPN and the 1st thing I saw scrolling across the bottom was about the No-no.
Interesting that I didn't even go to RS,com, came straight here!

laura k said...

thanks amy

oh ben!! what a drag. but if you saw the HH one, that's very cool.

Amy said...

Actually, I think that is the record for most No-nos with different pitchers.

Can you explain that?

Rob said...

Reporter: What did [Lester] have going for him tonight?

Francona: Everything.

laura k said...

what a great night! g'night everyone, see you tomorrow :)

Benjamin said...

Some catchers have caught multiple no-nos pitched by the same pitcher, I assume.

s1c said...

Am pretty sure that same catcher has caught more than 4 No-no's but a couple of those were by the same pitcher (Ryan), I am just going off of memory from last year when they were talking about Tek catching HH's.

Will do some digging.

Amy said...

I am waiting to see Lester on NESN.

Amy said...

His arm is so wrapped up.

Rob said...

Oh man. Lou Pinella out arguing with Joe West. Showdown!

Amy said...

Oh, that makes sense, S1C and Phil.

Lord Lynch said...

Just woke up, in the middle of the night, to see this.

Hurry up MLB TV - I need to see this. The end, something.....

Congrats to Lefty Lester. Fantastic news.

Rob said...

A jolly good morning it is, isn't it Lord?

Rob said...

Lester: "I came out in the 9th and walked the first guy on five pitches. I had to step back for a few seconds and tell myself to stop being so fine. Let them put the ball in play and let the guys behind me do their job."

Lord Lynch said...

Got the 9th innings on now....

Don't tell me what happened :-)

Amy said...

What a poised, modest and articulate young man he is.

SoSock said...

Wow, been watching Lester's comments on a break in the Cubs game. This is fantastic, and I didn't even see it.
I did see one of Kevin Brown's, and I "watched" the whole Bucholtz game on GDGD whilst chatting on JoS

Rob said...

I'm having a really good time watching this press conference.

Lord Lynch said...

I went to a particularly good dinner party the night of Clay's, and crashed out on my mate's sofa with him no-hitting in the sixth.

This, I slept right through...

(I also found out that Curt blew his shot at a no-no while sitting in the Elephant and Castle bar in Washington DC!)

Amy said...

They just repeated that Tek caught a ML leading 4th no hitter without qualification as to number of pitchers. I wish I knew how to use that baseball reference page to get the whole list.

Amy said...

Gee, Lord, I was at a dinner party the night of Clay's no hitter. But it was on this side of the Atlantic, so I don't think you were there.

s1c said...

Amy - They left off Torborg on the list with 3 though.

Amy said...

LBJ so cute!

Lord Lynch said...

The way all good no-nos should end. With a K.

Fan-fucking-tastic.

Back to bed. Got to pick the potential mother-in-law up from Heathrow tomorrow.

Happy days.

Benjamin said...

Cubs keep padding their lead, to further delay Baseball Tonight.

Amy said...

Now I will wait to hear Tek talking about being the record holder. I may never turn off NESN tonight.

allan said...

I think Tek has caught no-nos from:

Nomo
Lowe
Buchholz
Lester

???

allan said...

The Tek info should be in every game story tomorrow.

Lord Lynch said...

Amy, all I can say was I had a very big headache when I found out about Clay's no-no.

Now, I feel OK....

Do I wake up my Yankee girlfriend in bed upstairs to tell her ;-)

Benjamin said...

BR's list is already updated.

Amy said...

So what were Jason's 4 No hitters? Buchholz, Lester, Lowe and ?? Who am I missing?

Benjamin said...

Here's a list of no-no catchers.

Ray Schalk caught 4 on 5/14/1914, 5/31/1914, 4/14/1917, and 4/30/1922, each with a different pitcher.

Amy said...

Lord, I will say that Harvey, my Yankee fan husband, was very happy for Lester. How can anyone not want him to succeed?

Benjamin said...

You forgot Nomo's nono.

s1c said...

Redsock - You are correct it was Nomo's, Lowe's, HH's and Lester.

Amy said...

Oh, Nomo. I forgot all about him!

M@ said...

So... I'm expecting a pretty convincing show from the Sox tomorrow night, y'hear?

(We should've watched the game tonight!)

Benjamin said...

Schalk's 5/14/1914 nine-inning no-no actually was a loss in 10 innings, though, so he officially only caught three.

So Varitek's the only catcher with four.

Amy said...

Wow, that's interesting about Schalk's fourth one not counting.

Not that I am complaining, being as it puts Tek at the top!

9casey said...

Those are fun.....God it's great to be a Red Sox fan.....

Benjamin said...

Pedro would care, since it's the same retroactive change in the rules that took away his 9-inning no-hitter (broken up in extra innings).

s1c said...

Yep, Shalk is only really 3, so I stand corrected. Good for Amy's favorite player!!!

allan said...

note: m@ and his partner will be watching the game tomorrow at chez sock! i do not think he'll be threading, however!

i'm adding screenshots of various sites to the post, btw.

Benjamin said...

Apparently also Lester's first complete game.

allan said...

Putting mod back on, but will be back in half hour or so.

9casey said...

Varitek .Four no-hitters..Schalk is a Hall of Famer......is Tek. He'd get my vote(but I don't have one)

Benjamin said...

SoSHer Rudy Pemberton:
I was telling my Yankee friend that Jon Lester has more no hitters this year than the combined win total of Hughes and Kennedy.

Brilliant.

Joe Grav said...

still buzzing at Chez Joe

well, I'm still buzzing anyway. everyone else went to sleep.

thatdietcokegirl said...

great post redsock:)

ps. lol 'm@'. i love that! er, th@ ;)

SoSock said...

Interesting that we've had 4 now since '01 but you have to go back to 65 or so before that.

andy said...

Just wanted to get my post in on this wonderful day.

I like how the NESN crew doesnt ever mention the no-hitter. You know if it were Fox they would be hacky and be talking about no-hitters with factoids about other no-hitters and all that.

MLBTV was full screen all game and left it on for a few minutes at the end to see all the hugging.

Jere said...

Woohoo!!!!! This is fucking awesome. Right after the bucHHolz no-HHitter, I remember my friend saying, "Imagine what Cashman is thinking right now.." And now BOTH of our key young'ns have pitched no-hitters. All the talk of Kennedy and Hughes and how we should all be shaking in our boots, but who's throwing the no-hitters?? And getting the rings!!

I like to think I was making my diving catch in the outfield at the same time Jacoby made his tonight. Now to watch all the highlights....

Rob said...

I like how the NESN crew doesnt ever mention the no-hitter. You know if it were Fox they would be hacky and be talking about no-hitters with factoids about other no-hitters and all that.

Ironically, the radio guys were mentioning no hitters and such. Not that Lester was throwing one, though.

nick said...

Well, look what I missed. I love how the comments are terse one liners for the last couple of innings, then expand in length as you all get comfortable in your revelling (and found bathrooms).

If I'd been around for the curling discussion, I'd throw around a reference to feather bowling again, making JoS the baseball blog with the most references to feather bowling (if they keep statistics on that sort of thing).

awesome!

Sean O said...

I was there. Yeah.

M@ said...

i do not think he'll be threading, however!

I could bring the Lappy... should I bring the Lappy?

ps. lol 'm@'. i love that! er, th@ ;)

:) Thanks!

Sarah Haendler said...

Man was that awesome! I only got bits of it on the radio in the car and then on the tv in the bar, but way to go!

Jack Marshall said...

Redsock et al.: Can anyone justify Francona's decision to put Cora out there in the 9th? It's a seven run game and a no-hitter---you're not worried about an error, you want the guy most likely to get to the ball, make a great play. Lugo has the range but is erratic, Cora is limited but steady. Isn't Lugo the obvious, logical one you want out there in THIS game? What am I missing?

Benjamin said...

That last photo is even better in the non-cropped version.

allan said...

Jack: When the inning started, I said Cora was in and that he had shitty range. I could totally see a grounder sneaking through. (I'd rather have the guy with range out there anytime. Errors are still rare.)

Up 7-0 and Lugo makes an error -- who gives a shit? Having a statue at short and having him imitate Jeter watching a single to his left ....

***

M@ - Up to you! Ofer watched 2 ALCS games at our place with his laptop last October. All three of us had our laptops going at once! You may want to sit and watch and chat (voice only) though.

just got home from my friends house where i watched the no-no!

506 comments on a Monday night game in May.
That's excitement!

laura k said...

Apparently also Lester's first complete game.

!!!!

laura k said...

So Jere, did you have the game on the radio at your softball game? We were speculating about that.

Rob said...

I've been looking through the thread from last night, and chuckling about some things that were said before we even thought about a no-hitter...

Patrick, 6:50 pm...
Our pitching hasn't been that impressive, statistically, but I feel like that will correct itself as pitchers get more comfortable.

Joe Grav, 7:17 pm...
A 1-2-3-4-5-6 inning. (I really want to make that phrase stick)

Zenslinger, 7:46 pm...
49 pitches for Lester...maybe Chris Smith will get his chance tonight.

etc.

Jere said...

L: Funny you should mention that. I did bring my 1980 Lake Placid Olympics portable radio. I was glued to it as we walked out to the car on the way to the game with Manny up in the bottom of the third and the bases loaded. Yet by the time we got to the field, with the 5-0 lead (and, again, with neither of us realizing it was a no-hitter for some crazy reason), I figured, This one's in the bag! So I didn't bring it out onto the field.

I have to say, though, there just wouldn't have been much time to listen, as I played the field in every inning. If I did have it, sure I would've got the rare update, but still might not have realized what was going on by getting one-minute clips. And then if I did know, I probably would've just been pissed: "A no-hitter's going on and I'm missing it!" And then I might have said, No, I can't play short this inning, I have to sit here with this radio, and that wouldn't have been cool. So, it all worked out...I guess.

Jere said...

And I should add to that--while walking out to the car on our way out, I had the radio at my ear, while Kim had her phone at hers, getting the news that her mom's chemo DID work on the tumors in her lungs, a good sign that it's working in general. So it was kind of fitting and I'm sure inspiring for her that that game would end up a no-hitter for Jon Lester. (Sorry if this breaks the "let's not bring up cancer anymore" rule, but, it's different if you actually have cancer.)
