G48: Red Sox 2, Royals 1

Royals - 000 000 100 - 1 5 0
Red Sox - 020 000 00x - 2 5 0
Masterson was superb yet again: 6.1-3-1-3-5, 91. ... Francona on post-game: Masterson promoted to Pawtucket!!

He allowed a two-out double in the first, a two-out HBP in the second, walks in the third and fourth that were quickly erased, a two-out double in the sixth -- but pitched out of trouble each time. (A leadoff walk in the seventh eventually scored.)

The Red Sox made their second inning rally -- Kevin Youkilis one-out single, J.D. Drew single, Jason Varitek BB, Julio Lugo sacrifice fly, Coco Crisp RBI double -- stand up.

Hideki Okajima had some trouble in the 8th: leadoff double, one-out walk, two-out walk. Jonathan Papelbon came on with the bases loaded and two outs -- and struck out Billy Butler. He then pitched a perfect 9th, a 3-1 grounder and two strikeouts.

***

A first inning throwing error by Derek Jeter allowed the Orioles to keep batting -- and they scored seven runs -- en route to a 12-2 victory over the Yankees. ... NYY = 7.5 GB.

***

Gil Meche (5.98, 71 ERA)+ / Justin Masterson (1.50, 286 ERA+)

Masterson's only other major league appearance was against the Angels at Fenway on April 24, 2008. Boston lost the game, but he put up an impressive 6-2-1-4-4, 95 line.

Tampa held off the A's in 13 innings last night to remain 1 GB. They play again at 10, while the last-place Yankees (6.5 GB) host the Orioles at 7.

I just put a new TV in my room. I had a 19", and this one is a 27". It...is...a...beast. I'm about four or five feet away from the TV. So, it looks like a big screen.

The problem, though, is this TV's picture. You know how NESN has their Edge on the bottom of the screen? This TV shows the left side at the bottom of the TV, and the right side about 3/4" above the bottom of the TV. So, it goes uphill. Everything kinda goes uphill. And I have no idea how to fix it.

phil said...

My googlefu suggests moving the tv (they're sensitive to the earth's magnetic fields) and calling a technician to fiddle with hidden service menu options.

phil said...

What's the model?

redsock said...

Okay, I'm here.

Steak is good.

phil said...

And we're off to the...

Boom. One out.

phil said...

Tofu steak?

Amy said...

Never seen that problem, Ish. Sounds very odd.

Amy said...

OK, no no hitter tonight.

redsock said...

No tofu. No.

ish said...

Hmm let's see...

Panasonic CT-27G7DF-1

..Hidden controls?

Amy said...

Googlefu. New word for me.

phil said...

This might be the procedure for accessing the hidden menus on that model.

You might also try: up up down down left right left right B A select start.

ish said...

Can someone tell me why Brad Mills is coaching, what is that, 3rd base?

Amy said...

Papi!

No no hitter for them either.

redsock said...

shift this.

let's go, being.

phil said...

Ok, *now* no no-hitter.

Amy said...

Ish, his wife is having medical tests. According to Remy/Orsillo.

Amy said...

I mean DeMarlo Hale's wife.

(Is that the right spelling?)

phil said...

Yes, "DeMarlo Hale".

phil said...

Four batters, two strikeouts. Small sample size, but I like the sample.

ish said...

These adjustments are interesting, Phil. I haven't been able to fix the problem yet... Trying to figure out what all the different numbers mean. That's just me not being a TV serviceman, heh. But I like tinkering with things anyways.

Patrick said...

Meche has had good success against the Sox and it makes me wonder what an all anti-Red Sox team would look like (with current players).

My ace would be Kazmir, and my catcher would be Posada.

phil said...

Panasonic apparently uses hex values for its service modes, so fiddling might be difficult.

Jere said...

Werner, when you just say "2012," the casual fan doesn't know you're referring to the 100th anniversary celebration.

redsock said...

FIRE!!!!

Patrick said...

NO! MUSSINA DIDN'T MAKE IT THROUGH ONE!!!!?!?!? Say it ain't so!

Zenslinger said...

Did I say Mussina couldn't keep it up? I sure was thinking it.

He's down 7-0 in the 1st...all on two outs after a Calm Eyes error.

Patrick said...

Baltimore is the anti-Yankees

phil said...

Mussina lasts 2/3 of an inning and gives up 7 runs to Baltimore.

Jeter throwing error means only one is earned, though.

Jere said...

Holy shit, 7-0 Orioles, "can life get any better? I submit that it cannot." - Brian Regan

Jere said...

7 runs all with two outs!

phil said...

Hmmm. A double play doesn't score the run, here.

Jere said...

Hey, is it possible for a Yankee fan to leave the Stadium BEFORE they arrive?

redsock said...

Hey, is it possible for a Yankee fan to leave the Stadium BEFORE they arrive?

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

phil said...

Circle looking for parking and go home?

Jere said...

cost us a run..

phil said...

Nice at bat.

Amy said...

Jere, there are no casual Red Sox fans, are there?

What was Werner's story about Rose Kennedy? I missed what he said, as I was focused more on him talking about Teddy making it until 2012.

Patrick said...

Coco Clutch

Jere said...

casual fans= "Yankee fans who happen to be tuning in to NESN", ha

phil said...

Pedroia does in one pitch what Coco couldn't manage to do in eight (end the inning).

Sarah Gates said...

Hey y'all!

I've just gotten home from work but apparently I don't get to watch the game because Dave, who has been home all day, already has the TV.

I'm not bitter. Much.

phil said...

Jeter follows up in the bottom of the first by grounding into a double play.

Jere said...

Jeter follows up his 7-run error by hitting into a double play.

Jere said...

Wow, we phrased that quite similarly.

(Will we repeat it with the follow-up comment?)

phil said...

Get out of my head, Jere.

Jere said...

Awwwww

Patrick said...

Jeter follows up in the bottom of the first by grounding into a double play.

Sounds like CI needs to commit seppuku to save some face.

phil said...

Awwwww.

Amy said...

Hi Sarah! Did you ever get to dinner last night? Or did you quietly watch the no hitter?

Patrick said...

Looks like furry bacon to me.

Amy said...

That was some bad base running.

redsock said...

Missed a bit of Werner also, but Ted Kennedy's grandfather was "Honey Fitz" Fitzgerald -- Boston mayor in 1912 who threw out the first pitch with Rose (wife?).

Amy said...

No, Rose was his daughter. She married Joe Kennedy, father of JFK, RFK, Teddy etc.

phil said...

Gordon gets caught in a run-down?

magnolia_2000 said...

is laura here tonight????

phil said...

Damon fielding error.

Patrick said...

Yankees should try punching some more clocks.

Amy said...

No sign of Laura yet, Magnolia. But Allan knows best.

Jere said...

They told that poor blind girl it was a kitty cat....

phil said...

BAL 72 |960
NYY 0 |012

redsock said...

71-0????

Cool.

L is here but we have guests and she is not online. All 4 watching
the game though.

phil said...

A-Rod reaches on a Mora throwing error. Maybe it'll be one of those games like we had the other night.

Sarah Gates said...

Amy, I'm pretty sure I'm incapable of quietly watching a no-no. I'd have been busy chattering about everything else I could think of!

We did make it to dinner, and we went to Dave's favorite bar, where of course, they had the game on, so I got to see a lot of it. Dave didn't understand why I was so obsessed but wouldn't tell him why!

Amy said...

Oh, good, Sarah. You got to have your cake and eat it, too! Poor Dave, he needs a class in Baseball 101. Did he get it once the game was over?

phil said...

Cora would've had that too. Hopefully.

phil said...

55 pitches through four. He's managed to put someone on each inning but has still been pretty darn efficient.

phil said...

BAL - 72
NYY - 00

Cano further slides into irrelevance this season. Isn't he supposed to be their future?

Sarah Gates said...

He got it, but I don't think he really understood how special it was. His best friend from home is a huge fan and she's given up, she spent years trying to explain baseball to him.

I suspect he's going to be like my mom, who was always willing to watch ballgames on tv, but mostly because dad would rub her feet!

phil said...

Baseball and foot massage. That sounds compelling.

Jere said...

"Cano further slides into irrelevance this season. Isn't he supposed to be their future?"

No you're thinking of 2008 AL MVP Shelley Duncan

redsock said...

bal - 72

anyone doubt i won't be posting tabloids tomorrow?

phil said...

"Gload" reminds me of "goiter".

Amy said...

So I take it you are doing the foot massages! Not a bad deal all the way around.

Amy said...

It reminds me of gonad.

phil said...

Well, the Mets have already lost half of their doubleheader (second's rain-delayed), so it's not certain whose sorrows will get top billing.

Sarah Gates said...

If I know the NY tabloids, the Yankees woes will be far more compelling to them tonight when they go to press. Especially if the current trend holds up.

Jere said...

Did the Mets give up 7 in the first at home to the Orioles though?

phil said...

I don't mean to completely turn this into a MFY game thread, but Materson is being brutally boringly efficient.

Jeter hit by pitch, gets pinch run for.

redsock said...

gload = "gonad" + "load"

not good.

Jere said...

I was just going to mlbtv to see how badly Jeter was hurt...

And I would've got there sooner had the orioles.com link not taken me to a list of OAKLAND A'S games...

Sarah Gates said...

Dave just set the DVR to record some stuff and gave me the remote! I didn't even have to play the massage card - he's gone to play one of the old gta games in the other room!

That's kind of personal , no....:)

phil said...

What is gta? Glad you got the remote, Sarah.

What happened to Jeter?

Sarah Gates said...

Nice Jere.

Amy said...

LOL, 9Casey!

Also to Allan for the gonad +load comment.

Sarah Gates said...

gta = grand theft auto

9casey said...

Werner was wierd in that interview...and Remy and Orsillo seemed taken off guard about all the Teddy Kennedy convo...Akward

phil said...

Grand Theft Auto [4].

Joe Grav said...

Good evenin' folks. I've been around but not on the computer.

Sweet stuff from Justin so far. I love it.

9casey said...

Werner actully ended the interview himself.

phil said...

"Adam Jones singles on a soft ground ball to third baseman Alex Rodriguez."

We can't all be Lowell.

Amy said...

Somehow the Kennedy story on the heels of the Lester story seems to have left a lot of people feeling a bit stunned. I am not surprised that Werner, Orsillo and Remy didn't quite know what to say, given the diagnosis.

Jere said...

On the play before, A-Rod made a shitty throw to first on an easy play and Giambi saved him an E

phil said...

JG: your link's getting chopped.

Patrick said...

Holy crap, you guys! Masterson is nasty!

9casey said...

I was looking for a loaded gun when he first starting talking (Werner on Kennedy)about it.

phil said...

I love our rookies.

Masterson's GDGD portrait is hilarious, though -- he's all neck.

Amy said...

Great photo, Joe. Is part of your job to wear that during games? :)

redsock said...

Masterson having too much trouble in the minors. Should keep him here.

9casey said...

Patrick said...
Holy crap, you guys! Masterson is nasty!

He has a very different delivery. It reminds me of someone I just can't place it..

phil said...

Later, folks.

Jere said...

FIrst they have Werner talking about Ted's cancer, then they have Clarke on, who once ran for office: "When asked by Leary what his platform was, Clarke replied "Fuck the Kennedys".

Patrick said...

8-0 Celtics.

Looking like a blowout ; )

Joe Grav said...

My dad keeps changing the channel to the celtics, so keep me updated over here in case he changes for prolonged periods of time

Patrick said...

Joe, Masterson is filthy, over.

redsock said...

mdc + lopez up

Jack Marshall said...

Masterson reminds me a little of Eck.

It looks to me like if Colon can pitch and Schilling actually coms back, the Sox will have 8 starting pitchers.

Then what?

Patrick said...

Who's coming in?

Jere said...

andy is masterson-bating

Sarah Gates said...

Another great outing from Masterson. I sure like him.

Patrick said...

Pistions come back 12-11 Cs

Joe Grav said...

I sure like him too. Let's hope we don't blow it for him the way we did last time

Jere said...

Jeter hit on wrist, still awaiting word on x-rays. You know, I like to beat the Yanks when they're at full strength.

"this is as hard as I've seen him get hit." - Ken Singleton

Patrick said...

Let's hope we don't blow it for him the way we did last time

I know! Please let us not blow another lead.

Jere said...

Now LaTroy throws at a dude's head and benches clear in the Bronx!

Joe Grav said...

NICe. keep us updated Jere. I hoep suspensions follow

Joe Grav said...

I'm glad the yankmes are enjoying their new rivals, tampa and baltimore

Sarah Gates said...

Yeah Joe, knock wood, I'd love to see him get his first big league win tonight. He's certainly done his part.

Jere said...

Man, Michael Kay is just as full of shit as ever. First suggesting that the Yanks should hit an Oriole even though he admits the Jeter HBP was unitentional. Next pitch is right at the guy's head. Hawkins ejected, and then Kay starts in with, 'you wonder if this kind of thing can wake a team up.' The desperate Yanks still just trying anything to win. Oh, we've seen other teams "unite" in a fight, well we'll just keep trying that. Face it, you fucking suck.

Jere said...

Jeter X-rays negative, day to day. Bring it on, we'll beat you either way, chokers

Jere said...

That spring training fight with the Devil Rays really caused the Yanks to come roaring out of the chute, eh, Michael Kay?

Jere said...

Millions of Dead Royals!

Joe Grav said...

well, i guess an '08 grad too, but i figure i oughta be specific.

damn, 2-1? what happened? we got the game on now

Jere said...

single made it 2-1 Sox, but MDC got out of inning. now 1 out, bottom 7

Amy said...

I have had some kitten issues. They keep chewing electrical cords. Any suggestions on how to stop that?

How did KC score the run?

Jack Marshall said...

Uh, Amy, if they keep chewing electrical cords, the problem will sorta take care of itself, one of these days....

Amy said...

Very nice, Jack....

redsock said...

rubbing tabasco on the wires might keep them away.

Jere said...

As a cat person, I hate how cat death is like a funny joke but if you even suggest petting a dog's fur the wrong way it's, like, appalling.

Amy said...

Yeah, or bitter apple. I am reading up on the internet. Thanks, Allan.

redsock said...

I have to ask: did Paps pull a Joba after that strikeout?

Amy said...

Thank goodness Pap has nerves of steel.

Amy said...

Definite Joba pumping there. Who cares?

Though quite a contrast to Lester's rather low key reaction after pitching the last out last night.

Sarah Gates said...

Come on guys, let's get some RUNS!

Jere said...

drinkwater was psyched on that last k

Joe Grav said...

so, are we officially concerned w/ oki yet or what

Jere said...

Luke Scott, the one who got thrown at before, hits a dong, 12-2 us

phil said...

I'm concerned. His ERA is deceptively low.

Amy said...

Concerned about Oki---yeah, somewhat. He was better than expected last year, so maybe this is more of what we expeced.

phil said...

Okajima's got a 461 ERA+, which is only going to get higher overnight.

Manny definitely slumping. The curse of the 500?
