G51: Athletics 8, Red Sox 3

Red Sox - 000 110 100 - 3 6 0
Athletics - 304 001 00x - 8 8 1
Four consecutive pitches from Wakefield with one out in the first inning -- Crosby double, called strike, Cust RBI single, Thomas 2-run dong -- put the Red Sox in an early hole.

Oakland got four more runs off Wake in the third. A walk and two singles brought in one run, then Ellis whacked a three-run dong to left, and it was Oakland 7-0.

Pedroia homered in the fourth. Ellsbury drove in Boston's other two runs: singling in Drew (who had doubled) in the fifth and Lugo (who had reached on an infield error) in the seventh.

Tampa Bay shut out Baltimore 2-0 to move back to 1.5 GB. The Yankees pounded Seattle 13-2, but remain locked in the basement.

***

Tim Wakefield (4.33, 99 ERA+) / Rich Harden (2.91, 131 ERA+)

Back on May 15, I noted (expected, hoped, etc.) that the Red Sox were going to "put an obscene beating on both the Brewers and Royals".

The team went 7-0, outscoring Milwaukee and Kansas City 49-28. That may not be obscene, but it'll do. The team batted .300/.377/.520 while holding its opponents to a .219/.312/.388 line.

Tonight starts a ten-game road trip with three in Oakland, three in Seattle and four in Baltimore. Then it's back to Fenway for a three-game AL East showdown with the Devil Rays.

As you can see by the schedule, the Sox have put together separate losing streaks of 3, 4 and 5 games as well as separate winning streaks of 4, 5, 6 and 7 games. All in the first 50 games of the season.

Heidi > Teener

Patrick said...

I'd rather he start in AAA

If he comes to the bullpen I would think it would be late in the season, August, Septemberish, depending on how our relievers are doing.

Patrick said...

Sigh! Heidi! So dreamy!

Joe Grav said...

nope

tim said...

nice 201 there

Joe Grav said...

Ish with the 201 and stating an undeniable truth

We just may come back

s1c said...

Heidi > Teener

But teener had a great ass!!!

Joe Grav said...

mike lowell is going to jack this one

phil said...

Someone needs to tell Manny he's closing in on his 500th fly out in foul territory. Then he'd start hitting homeruns instead.

ish said...

DR. DOUBLES!!!

Joe Grav said...

and by 'jack' i meant 'send to the gap'... i'm so good

ish said...

But teener had a great ass!!!

It's true. But the reason you'd be noticing is because she's walking away from you.

Joe Grav said...

Bring them home yookles

Joe Grav said...

burrrrrrn

Jere said...

Okay, nobody has ever hit back to back grand dongs, unless the 1890 Cubs (then Colts) did it. They scored 13 times in the fifth against Pittsburg including grand dongs by Kittridge and Burns, but no mention of them being four batters apart..

Patrick said...

Oh geez, there's no ladies around to keep you guys in line. Say 'earmuffs' if you begin talking about anything grown-up, to give me a heads up.

redsock said...

Her ass was a bit, umm, big, wasn't it?

Joe Grav said...

Fuck

Joe Grav said...

It wasn't really big in a bad way, though

/earmuffs

Patrick said...

You can tag up on a pop fly that's in foul territory?

ish said...

Very good news: 101 pitches for Harden.

Joe Grav said...

Yup

Joe Grav said...

AGGGH come on JD

Joe Grav said...

Umm... what is Tito arguing?

ish said...

Tim Sheedah is whipping out his sword and swinging it about.

Put it away and call the game.

Jere said...

Wow, I thought that was a fan, but you could hear umpy say, "You! Don't ever talk to me like that!" Oh, maybe it was "Youk"

redsock said...

wtf -- did o'neill get tossed?

(i mean, yook!)

Joe Grav said...

Wow, what a dickhole

ish said...

Nope. Magadan got tossed.

Joe Grav said...

anyone who ever says "don't you ever talk to me like that" or "respect my authority" deserves a slap

phil said...

So, uh, what happened there?

Joe Grav said...

f!#$

ish said...

anyone who ever says "don't you ever talk to me like that" or "respect my authority" deserves a slap

Well then. I give Tim Sheedah the new nickname of Cartman.

ish said...

So, uh, what happened there?

Drew hit a liner foul up the right field line. He went over to service is bat, but the umpire called him right back to home plate. Dave Magadan said something, umpire ran him.

redsock said...

Was just going to say "Anyone but Cartman, that is."

redsock said...

is that some of the new "speed up the game" shit?

s1c said...

well, that was a fragging waste of opportunity!!!

back to teener It's true. But the reason you'd be noticing is because she's walking away from you.

Like little animals when she walked.
Besides the bot seemed to like looking at it also (see surving grady)

Patrick said...

Respect Cartman's autoritai

I wonder if he ever did more than just look. Not to insinuate or assume anything...

Joe Grav said...

So are we done with the Leave Wake In strategy?

phil said...

Wins are overrated.

Patrick said...

Yikes...

s1c said...

Night, Night timmy, see you in Seattle!!!

Joe Grav said...

I'm pretty sure Papelbot describes more than just his pitching ability

Patrick said...

Who wants to win 8 in a row anyways? *sniff*

ish said...

So are we done with the Leave Wake In strategy?

For tonight, I guess.

I've never liked the idea of him being in the bullpen. Unless to be a long man. But even then... I'd rather see him retire than live the rest of his baseball life as a mop up man.

He's still a decent starter. Just up and down, up and down. I'm not sure that warrants him being taken out of the rotation, though. But it'd be hard if Buchholz and Colon were both pitching well.

Joe Grav said...

This one is perilously close to being over

Patrick said...

I don't know who's coming in, but I'd bet the farm that they let the two inherited runners score.

s1c said...

Ooh, pulling the IF in with 0 outs, not for sure I like that.

Joe Grav said...

If Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahh!!rdsma bails us out, I will renew my optimism about today's game

tim said...

s'go aardvark.

Joe Grav said...

Pedroia bails us out

ish said...

Castig said this is the first day the umpires have been told to crack down on things that are slowing the games down: batters who are slow to get into the box; pitchers doddling on the mound; and pitchers throwing extra warm-up pitches in the bullpen when they've been called into the game.

redsock said...

such bullshit. management has been complaining that games were too long and that they need new rules to quicken things up for at least 90 years.

Joe Grav said...

The bestest way to make the game faster is to make the strike zone bigger.

Joe Grav said...

come on jacob

Joe Grav said...

bah. 8-2./ not good

redsock said...

i wonder if mlb will do something about the REAL delay -- the long commercial breaks between innings? yeah, i wonder about that.

douchewhistles.

tim said...

i was watching some commentary show on TV yesterday and the announcers were discussing how slow the game is.....yet no one bothered to mention the most obvious answer - the fuckin advertisements and commercials...sure, blame it on the players. surely it isn't the constant ADS blistering through the game....

ish said...

such bullshit. management has been complaining that games were too long and that they need new rules to quicken things up for at least 90 years.

And yet, the umpires are still granting time to hitters while the pitchers have begun to pitch.

Happened tonight with Harden.

tim said...

i wonder if mlb will do something about the REAL delay -- the long commercial breaks between innings? yeah, i wonder about that.

douchewhistles.

That's right!

redsock said...

The bestest way to make the game faster is to make the strike zone bigger.

Meaning, of course, follow the rules.

Joe Grav said...

AFAIC it's just a slow game, that's just how it is. I think the fact that big games end too late for kids to watch has more to do with the crappy game times and endless commercials than the pace of the game

ish said...

Just what the hell is a douchewhistle? Doesn't sound like anything I want to hear or experience, ever.

Joe Grav said...

redsock: Right on.

s1c said...

After dropping 70+ on the game Wednesday, I want it to be an evening out not concerned about the game taking 3+ hours.

Douchebags.

Joe Grav said...

While I like it when my team walks a lot, as a neutral fan there is nothing more boring than watching a lot of walks in a game.

Joe Grav said...

Not bad, Aardsmah, not bad

Joe Grav said...

I really don't want to even imagine what a 'douchewhistle' would be

tim said...

I don't want to experience a douchewhistle either...which means that calling someone a douchewhistle = pretty good, in my books.

OK good work Aardvark, time for some rally now offense!

Patrick said...

Actually was a good inning by AA. I'll take it.

Joe Grav said...

speaking of offensive-sounding terms. oh my god i found perhaps the funniest website on the InterTubes

www.i-am-outraged.com

redsock said...

you think a game should last 2:30 or whatever? then check your watch at the first pitch and when it's 2:30 later, get up and leave.

ish said...

While I like it when my team walks a lot, as a neutral fan there is nothing more boring than watching a lot of walks in a game.

That's what makes the Red Sox/Yankees game so long, on top of the Networks and their extended advertisements.

And last night was no pitching clinic, either.

Patrick said...

Geez guys, earmuffs. Earmuffs.

ish said...

Geez guys, earmuffs. Earmuffs.

Be happy Andy isn't here. You'd need more than earmuffs.

Patrick said...

We're just a pair of grand salamis away from a decent lead. Nothing we haven't seen before.

redsock said...

a few years ago, i read a story about an woman who had died and she said that she didn't want flowers or anything at when she died, she wanted people to send $ to try to get bush out of office.

one of her children said she always called him a douchewhistle when she saw him on TV.

tim said...

www.i-am-outraged.com

I'll need to save that for later!

Joe Grav said...

ok, let's go

Patrick said...

You'd need more than earmuffs.

I'd need a bubble, and it would have to be opaque and made of kevlar.

phil said...

If there's one thing Lugo knows about, it's infield errors.

redsock said...

will the comemrcial breaks during the playoffs and WS be any shorter this year?

i should have timed some of them last year.

tim said...

the mid-inning pitching changes drag out games as well...starters used to go 8+ regularly, now we're into the pen in the 6th or 7th, that also drags out a game.....

Joe Grav said...

come on jacob

ish said...

the mid-inning pitching changes drag out games as well...starters used to go 8+ regularly, now we're into the pen in the 6th or 7th, that also drags out a game....

Yeah. Bud should outlaw pitching changes during innings.

phil said...

Pitching changes would take thirty seconds if they weren't an excuse for... more commercials.

ish said...

I bet he's thought about it.

Joe Grav said...

Run on the board

redsock said...

been a long time since starters usually went 8.

ish said...

Red Sox creep a little closer. Pecking pecking pecking away.

Come on guys. More pecks! Maybe a CHOMP.

tim said...

Yeah. Bud should outlaw pitching changes during innings.

Well that's just taking it out of context.

ish said...

Ellsbury finds out the hard way that speed kills.

s1c said...

Frack!!!

Jere said...

Dear Lugo, that's why you keep your glove on the guy in that situation

phil said...

Well fuck.

ish said...

Well that's just taking it out of context.

It's true. But he's had to have thought about it, right? Make the commercials longer in-between innings? Make it like Comedy Central. 20 minutes of Show per hour.

tim said...

Well maybe didn't usually go 8, was just using that as an example.....my comment should have been, teams are going to the bullpen earlier, therefore there are more pitching changes, therefore games are taking longer.....

redsock said...

damn, lyndon has got a bad habit of sliding past the base.

ish said...

I love it.

Pedroia goes AHHHHH FUCK!!!! Falls down... pauses... "I'm okay."

tim said...

It's true. But he's had to have thought about it, right? Make the commercials longer in-between innings? Make it like Comedy Central. 20 minutes of Show per hour.

I could see that. MLB could also go the blue jays route and have commercials IN BETWEEN BATTERS...stupidest thing ever there....

ish said...

Well maybe didn't usually go 8, was just using that as an example.....my comment should have been, teams are going to the bullpen earlier, therefore there are more pitching changes, therefore games are taking longer.....

Oh, I know. Plus you add the specialists as well. Come in for one batter... You could have 3 pitchers in one inning without giving up a hit.

s1c said...

I don't want to see Chandler, I want Kathryn!!!

It's midnight, I am at work and I want eye candy!!!

Patrick said...

Ish with 201 and 301. Screw Drew, Ish is on fire!

ish said...

It's midnight, I am at work and I want eye candy!!!

Need more Heidi.

Patrick said...

Did you say Heidi? Heidi is dreamy! <3

ish said...

Ish with 201 and 301. Screw Drew, Ish is on fire!

My dreams of hitting 401 are still possible! I will rule the world!!!!

It all depends on whether the Red Sox can stage themselves a little comeback.

tim said...

Oh, I know. Plus you add the specialists as well. Come in for one batter... You could have 3 pitchers in one inning without giving up a hit.

Yup. Them 3 pitchers could not only not give up a hit, but also not record an out....issue 3 walks...

ish said...

Did you say Heidi? Heidi is dreamy! <3

Shouldn't you be shouting earmuffs at yourself then?

ish said...

This is Mike Timlin's perfect time to pitch in a ballgame.

Patrick said...

Shouldn't you be shouting earmuffs at yourself then?

Puhhlease, a little boy crush is hardly gushing about Tina's ace.

phil said...

Timlin got someone to strike out swinging. First time this year?

tim said...

Alright, it's been a long day.....11 hours of drinking, i need some rest.

gonna watch the comeback without threading, as apparently me threading = bad karma for the sox.

i should just steam some spinach and keep my business to myself...

anyway, have a good night all, i will see you tomorrow hopefully!

no idea what happened there with the double post...

Patrick said...

Who's pitching? Yahoo is stuck on last inning...

Oh yeah, that's key! I forgot...

Patrick said...

NM, dave said Timlin, got it.

Too much dust? Too little ventilation? Too much porn?

Joe Grav said...

I'm guessing dust, since it still has the same amount of ventilation it used to have.... how do you clear the dust out? I suppose I should ask a computer professional huh

Patrick said...

Earmuffs!

Joe Grav said...

that was a poor at bat

and yes, i said heidi, the only person capable of sparking a rally here

Joe Grav said...

no earmuffs necessary

ish said...

how do you clear the dust out? I suppose I should ask a computer professional huh

A can of compressed air might do the trick. Shoot it at anywhere that looks to have dust. Maybe unscrew the bottom and see if there's any dust in there as well.

ish said...

no earmuffs necessary

I think it's because I said "porn"

Those Earmuff pictures of Heidi helped put this loss into perspective, though.

I feel like L would at this point, I think. Red Sox lost. Oh well. Get 'em tomorrow night.

Joe Grav said...

Let us channel the spirit of L
