G52: Athletics 3, Red Sox 0

Red Sox - 000 000 000 - 0 1 0
Athletics - 010 000 11x - 3 9 0
Duchscherer was senational (8-1-0-0-4, 101) (again), retiring the first 15 Red Sox before plunking Jason Varitek to start the sixth.

Boston's lone hit was a clean line drive single to center from David Ortiz with one out in the seventh. Neither Varitek nor Ortiz advanced past first base.

Beckett (7-7-2-0-9, 107) had a rough first two innings, but settled down after that, at one point setting down 11 straight A's. MDC pitched a shaky eighth, giving up two singles, a walk, a stolen base, and a run on 22 pitches.

There was no need to rush this game along, as it was played in a tidy 2:17.

***

Josh Beckett (4.67, 93 ERA+) / Justin Duchscherer (2.67, 144 ERA+)

In four games against Boston, Frank Thomas is 7-for-16 with three homers and 10 RBI.

Also: Mariners/Yankees at 1 and Orioles/Rays at 6.

A two-out error led to a dong for Abreu, making it 7-4 Yanks. Earlier, the Ms intentionally walked Cano. Cano! And their fifth run came in after that.

Joba's being extended as we speak, just left two runners on in his second inning of work. 7-4 at Cotton Eye Joe/God Bless America/Take Me Out to the Ball Game/ Freebird/Stairway to Heaven time....

They really put Arthur Rhodes in there? This is just what they needed--to play the worst team in baseball. I guess the Royals weren't exactly hot shit either, though.

We'll see.

I will be mostly absent from the first half + of this game. First of all, I need to rest because I did an impromptu, EPIC 41 mile bike ride today. I think it was a little much, but whatever.

Got the Celtics and the Stanley Cup Finals, as well. Got two TVs in the living room going, and I wish there were three. I'm thinking 11:00 or so I'll pop back in here.

Enjoy the game(s) everyone!

they have so many beers here and the bathrooms are pentiful and empty.

jacoby is nervous, we have a big night back at the hotel.

the crowd here feels like 50 50 split. thats nice. a lot of A's fans maybe 70 30 them.

we need to pull crisp and play manuel.

the stadium is 75% full. alot of empties

thats what i got for this part of the game see you in a couple innings. Andy McGuire checking in from the Oakland Coliseum, back to you Allan.

PS: i was pissed i thought the batter held tek then he waved to the sox dugout to tell them tek was hurt. classy. i am proud to be human today.

Amy said...

So when do we plan our JOS group trip to Fenway? I was thinking about this earlier. If we can get Allan and Laura to come to Boston, I bet the rest of us would find a way to get there since most of us live closer by (except SoSock and Lord and those west coasters). Maybe next season?

So when do we plan our JOS group trip to Fenway? I was thinking about this earlier. ... Maybe next season?

Our last trip to Fenway was 2005. I really want to go next year. We shall see.

Benjamin said...

I'll definitely be a lot closer starting in September.

Patrick said...

Oh man, Amy. That's what makes me hate Fenway. It's like an impenetrable fortress, and trying to get in when you want is an epic battle.

Jere said...

speak for yourself, patrick. the whole next homestand is on sale and has been for sometime. It's so easy this year.

Amy said...

Yeah, I really am serious (even after two drinks). I think it would be amazing to all go to a game together.

OK, I should watch some of this game. How is Beckett doing? Besides being a run down.

allan said...

heh. don't ever say you can't get tix to fenway. even if jere is out and it's buried in a 600 post thread, he'll suss it out!

he'll get us a big block of tix, i'm sure!

Patrick said...

I <3 Beckett.

Amy said...

Oh, no. Patrick, you are in trouble now. Jere is always telling me how easy it is to get tickets! I have not found it to be true. But with planning for a large enough group, we can do it.

Patrick said...

SoSock said...

I'm really hoping Jere is right.
My son & I are planning to come to Boston in August for our 1st Fenway games.
With enough notice I bet we would find a way to come again next year.

allan said...

damn it koko.

allan said...

einstein says: e = P5

Benjamin said...

Less shitty baseball, please.

Jere said...

I think the best thing to do--since you can only get 8 tix together at most--would be to just snag as many SRO tix ($20, or 25 for the pavilion level SRO if we can get them) for a weekday night game against a shittier team. That way we could all hang out together instead of each person only being able to talk to the people on their left and right.

Amy said...

Good night, Laura. I am wiped out, and I didn't work today.

I hate these west coast games.

SoSock said...

Cap'n is not so speedy, will take a BIG hit to plate him

allan said...

then we all crash at jere's place!

Jere said...

I love how Don mentions the no-no at every opportunity when it's the other team.

Benjamin said...

Still a nohitter. :(

Amy said...

Jere, what does SRO really mean? Is there really no place to sit? Not sure I can stand for a three plus hour game, But I am game for trying.

Jere said...

Hey we're moving out of the Boston area when our lease ends....not too far out, though.

allan said...

baby steps -- we got a guy on first.

we build on that in the 7th.

...

anyone else feel like it's 6-0 and not 1-0?

SoSock said...

GDGD - Ellsbury grounds out SOFTLY to 3rd. (my caps)
Geez, rub it in a little, will ya?

Patrick said...

Woops, I had though Josh's 73 was through 6. No so money, but he can still go 7.

Benjamin said...

JD only has 78 pitches through six.

Jere said...

Standing Room Only. Yeah, I guess if you don't like to stand for that long, it would be tough, but the last few rows of grandstand, so many people just stand in the SRO area anyway, that seats open up, and you just hop right in.

Sarah Haendler said...

I'm not feeling well either, Laura. And no cocoa and massage are forthcomming.

And going to bed in the middle of the game is a pretty big hint that I really am feeling crappy, right?

Good night guys...

Jere said...

But Amy, the SRO areas in Fenway offer some of the best views in baseball for cheap. You're still so close. You just may have to see through a pole:)

Benjamin said...

Celtics are up 24 points. Maybe they're bogarting the Boston mojo tonight.

Benjamin said...

Beckett's making Cust look silly tonight.

allan said...

oh yeah oh yeah oh yeah
sez the ump!!!

Patrick said...

YES! HELL YA! V-TEK! V-TEK! DOUBLE PLAY!

Jere said...

I'm also thinking of doing a Wiffle Ball game this summer for the readers of my own blog--but it could be for both those people and you guys. We'll see if I actually do it, though.

allan said...

could that 2B ump have been in a worse position to call that play? no, he could not.

Jere said...

aw shee-it

Amy said...

I know what SRO stands for---I just meant what does it really mean at Fenway. I know those new right field pavilion tickets have some bar stool type seats, but not real seats. Like I said, I could be game for standing. But I am not sure for three hours!

So it looks like soon it will be another guys night here.

Oh, damn, that was annoying.

Benjamin said...

Runs, please.

Or at least hits.

Hits, please.

Well, one hit.

Hit, please.

Joe Grav said...

Good evening kids. GO SOX!

Amy said...

Yes, this is my last half inning.

At this rate, that seems to mean another two pitches.

Jere said...

The pavilion level SRO give you a shelf to lean on, and a pole below to stand on to gain a couple inches if the people in front of you stand up. It's a little less taxing to be up there. But in general all the areas for standing are much better than they used to be, as they've opened up a lot of areas around the park. So you could go hang out in the roomy areas between innings and stuff... You know what else we could do is get a bunch of $12 upper bleacher tix for the same game, and those people could sit for a while and occasionally join the rest of the group in the SRO areas.

Jake of All Trades said...

If MLB succeeds at their stupid game shortening mission you'll only have to stand for 2 hours.

Jere said...

And there goes your no-hitter. And soon, there goes your shutout.

Amy said...

Wow, no no hitter. Finally.

allan said...

That sounds like a great plan, Jere. Bleacher seats for when our (my?) legs give out.

Any seat in Fenway is a good seat, as far as I am concerned. Though some are better, all are good.

Jere said...

Stretch time at whatever Oakland Alameda County Coliseum in currently called.

Patrick said...

Sigh. Still, we're only a dongs length from being tied up.

allan said...

My rule is: If a visiting fan is being a dick, taunting the home fans, drawing attention to him/herself, they deserve the treatment they get. If they're there to cheer for their team they should be allowed to do that without getting hassled. And I think this is followed at Fenway from what I've seen. I've never seen a visiting fan at Fenway get hassled unless they were being a prick. (Yankee games excluded, but even then, if you're a good fan, you usually get treated accordingly, as I usually have when I go to the Toilet, as I'm not a dick.)
