Pedroia Suffers Strained Left Oblique

Dustin Pedroia left the US WBC team today after feeling a shooting pain in his left side. He has a strained left oblique and will be further examined by Red Sox doctors tomorrow.

Pedroia said he felt the injury during a workout on Friday and hoped it would sideline him for only a few days. He doesn't know if the Red Sox will allow him to continue playing in the tournament. FY:
I've never really had anything like this which is why it’s frustrating. Obviously I train real hard in the off season to get ready and try to prevent something like this from happening. Maybe I tried a little too hard too fast to get this going.
And that's why so many fans are against the WBC.

Granted, there's no good time to play these games and players can get hurt doing just about anything (sneezing, turning off an alarm clock, driving a car), but Pedroia would be far less likely to play all out in a spring training game against the Pirates than he would representing the United States on the world stage.

Other people seem to enjoy the WBC, but I just keep thinking, "please don't let any Red Sox players get hurt." It seems I'm the only one who doesn't like it. Then again, I hate the olympics too.

I'd be suprised to see this WBC last much longer, MLB can't want the MVP on the sidelines to start the season.....the whole thing is plain stupidity, a complete joke..

Lots of people don't like the WBC. People say it all the time.

laura k said...

That was a response to MattyMatty.

So why is the WBC plain stupidity and a complete joke? Does it have to be either the greatest thing in the world or total crap?

You are far from alone. Plenty of Sox fans are thrilled the DR was knocked out quickly and wish Japan was too.

Puerto Rico's up 6-1 in the colonial game so far.

Players can get hurt in ST games too. The problem with the WBC such as it exists is in either lack of or excessive amounts of playing time.

Benjamin said...

Lugo surgery could come as soon as Tuesday.

tim said...

I see no point to the WBC. Fuck nationalism.

But as someone at SoSH posted, it is somehow "okay" when a player gets dinked up under the direct supervision of the team. If FY strains something during a spring game, that seems more easy to deal with as a fan than if he is off playing in a worldwide tournament.

Maybe if FY stayed out of the WBC, he would have been hit by a bus in Fort Myers. Who knows?

Benjamin said...

(And like Brian Giles, Lugo's in ST camp instead of representing Domestic Violence Nation in the WBC.)

tim said...

oops, sorry for the politics. I'll be mum on the issue from now on!

allan said...

As long as I agree with you, gripe away! And on nationalism, I do.

allan said...

P. Rico 7-1!

laura k said...

Fuck nationalism.

Now that's something I can get behind.

Be not mum.

laura k said...

Domestic Violence Nation

Terrible overcrowding there.

Then we could all say Fuck Public Transit! Fuck Florida!

[Fuck Florida anyway, of course.]

tim said...

Well also fuck the WBC because I can already see it - this is going to be one of those things that goes away for a bit, then comes back and haunts us through August-September-October, then eventually FY will require surgery post-season....hope I'm wrong though!

Can't believe no one said this yet, but...

I'll play.

Baseball and all of professional sports is a form of sublimated nationalism. Both involve adherence to collective geographic identity and alcohol. You cannot take the nationalism out of baseball, and the WBC actually subverts nationalism through its fluid definitions of team eligibility.

and fuck public transit in canada at least, systems here are pitiful. more people would use it if it weren't so shitty...i know i would. i still do use it but not when i need to be somewhere in a timely fashion.

Logging off for the night - Benjamin I'll touch base on that one tomorrow, I had a similar thought as well but too wiped to elaborate on it. Ridiculously busy day.

I do not feel any loyalty or allegiance to Boston, though. They play half their games in that city, but it's not part of my attachment to the Red Sox at all. Anytime I use the word "Boston", I mean "the Red Sox team".

Beltran dong = 8-1.

Benjamin said...

They do PED testing for the WBC, right? (Pudge.)

Benjamin said...

It'd be awesome if this game ended under the mercy rule.

allan said...

I don't recall what testing they do, though I think Flo mentioned contributing blood.

Benjamin said...

And it did.

11-1.

Back to Pedroia... I was thinking last year that Mighty Mouse is just TOO explosive. He doesn't do anything at other than full effort. I've been expecting him to tear something off something since I first saw him. Hopefully, this is only a pull and he'll get better soon...but one of these days he's gonna do his tiny frame some serious injury...now if he just turns 40 first that'll be OK.

It was meant to try and sell the game to other countries ,a marketing tool , nothing more nothing less, so with that comes stupidity.....When professionals play games that mean nothing at all , with a complete set of different rules they usually play with ,its a joke...

The little league world series is more of a WBC then this will ever be. Owners and GM's must despise this "classic" ....

I am not sure , but I don't believe because you are small you are more prone to injury, I'm no doctor....And do you actually watch the games thinking he may get hurt, that is kind of wierd...Motherly in fact..

Motherly? Now that's sick.

In defense of Julio Lugo, the domestic violence charge against him was eventually tossed out, as it was revealed his ex-wife cooked up the whole thing with her brother to get back at Lugo. It made big headlines in Florida (when Lugo was with the Rays) but got almost no attention anywhere else.

I don't blame Dusty's injury on the WBC. He plays 100 MPH everywhere, and could have happened as easily in Ft. Myers.

so it's official -- the guy hasn't hit a fucking thing for years.

I can't believe it either! Good thing someone is keeping up.

I think that's true to some extent. Tribal loyalty and all that. But it's so deeply sublimated as to have morphed into a completely different experience. We are instantly welcoming to our "tribe" - Sox fans - no matter where they live and what they look like. In fact, when they live faraway and/or look significantly different, we like them even more, because they must make such a special effort to remain with the tribe.

And for many of us, there is the team/tribe identity, but no geographic identity. I've never lived in New England and never will.

Fuck public transit when it's actually cheaper to drive your car to a game and pay for parking than to take the train, even when the train is convenient! (Altho never timely because it runs once a never.)

In this case it's not fuck public transit, it's fuck the fucked up systems that gave us highway traffic and exhaust instead of frequent and inexpensive train travel.

OK. I can see that, altho I don't think it's as evil as you make it out to be. I suspect part of why people don't like it is because it's different.

From this perspective everything in baseball, and in most professional sports, is just a marketing tool.

I write stories that are just excuses for publishers to sell ads, and these guys play a game that's an excuse to sell overpriced beer and t-shirts.

But that's the world we live in. They're still playing baseball, so I'm still watching.

People were bound to go crazy the first time someone was hurt in one of these meaningless games.

I don't think it is evil, and I hated it before anyone got hurt.....I also don't see what you mean by different.....

Just wake me when its over.

I've never had a sip of alcohol in my life, and I grew up a die-hard Sox fan from birth with the Yankees being the closest MLB team to where I was.

Reminds me of a George Will quote from Men At Work:

"Football combines the two worst features of American life. It is violence punctuated by committee meetings."

...

Reading or listening to George Will on anything other than Men At Work is the third worst feature of American life.

New, different, out of the ordinary, something that didn't exist a few years ago.

And in defense of everything else, there is disagreement about this version of events. Victims recant stories of violence all the time - violence that actually happened, but they still back off when faced with police, court, exposure. Many people in the anti-DV community believe the original stories about Lugo were real.

Heh. Very good.

I didn't read this carefully the first time. Alcohol has nothing to do with nationalism or tribal identity. It's part of some cultures, but it's not inherent to nationalism.

Believe it or not, alcohol has nothing to do with baseball either!
