Red Sox Battle Rays Again

Rays - 000 001 010 - 2 7 1
Red Sox - 124 000 10x - 8 11 0
Masterson pitched well (3-1-0-0-3) and Papelbon and Daniel Bard both struck out the side in their respective innings of work. Bot allowed two hits. Tazawa pitched two innings and struck out four; he also allowed two hits and a run. The Sox pitchers struck out 15 batters in the game.

Someone wearing Julio Lugo's uniform went 3-for-3 with two doubles, two RBI, and a walk.

The Red Sox committed six errors and allowed nine unearned runs Saturday afternoon in a 15-7 loss to the Rays. (Boston actually out-hit Tampa Bay in the game, 11-7.)

The AL East rivals play again today at 1 PM. Justin Masterson will start; Jonathan Papelbon, Daniel Bard and Junichi Tazawa will also pitch.

Tim Wakefield threw 49 pitches over three innings and is already getting bored with the exhibition schedule:
I feel like I'm game-ready now. I don't think my pitch count would be Opening Day-ready. But it's not like I labored today. I felt like I could have gone at least one more [inning], maybe two. Once I get my pitch count up to about 95, I think from that point, we'll back it down to 70 right before the season starts and then we'll be ready. ...

My timing [with the knuckleball] seems to be better. I got a lot of swing-and-misses and three strikeouts, which is good. ... I'm happy with the way I felt.
Mike Lowell is scheduled to play (or DH, rather) on Tuesday, with an eye towards playing third on Friday the 13th against the Yankees. ... Alex Rodriguez has decided to undergo surgery on his torn right hip labrum Monday.

Today's WBC games:
Korea 14, China 0
South Africa / Cuba, 2 PM
Panama / Dominican Republic, 4:30 PM
United States / Venezuela, 8 PM
Australia / Mexico, 9 PM
Korea / Japan, 5:30 AM (Monday)
The United States/Venezuela winner will advance to the second round. The loser of Monday's Canada/Italy game will be eliminated.

So A Rod is over. Good. IK love the idea of the WBC but is it bad for MLB pitchers?

is it bad for MLB pitchers

They have pitch count limits, but as far as it being "bad", who knows?

The WBC is a nice idea, but there is no good time to have the tournament. During spring training is problematic; so is after the World Series. The All-Star break is too short -- and teams would not want their best pitchers going off in mid-season to throw in exhibitions.

woohoo! NESN baseball! no remy!

tim said...

Wow, this lineup is like the game I went to see last September!

tim said...

Yup, no good time for the WBC...This is probably the best time of any to have it but I don't really care about the idea (not a fan of nationstates/national "pride" to begin with)

Tim, I'm with you on the WBC but it is cool to group players together based on what country they come from and see who can make up the better team and win a tournament. But I'm glad to see the the excitement. I'm just not a huge ZOMG USA USA USA type of person.

Does anybody happen to have two televisions I can use to hook up right here? Got the Celtics, Bruins and Red Sox all on at the same time. Intermission for the Bruins, Celtics on the TV and Red Sox on the radio right now.

What's up with NESN's mucho Lugo love? Every time I turn the channel to NESN they're showing Lugo.

Haha, only reason I found out about the Red Sox is 'cause I saw the Bs game was going on so I turned on the TV and saw baseball!

Tek being tek.

Ish said...

Yeah Bs are on NBC.

Benjamin said...

Lars!

tim said...

Yeah, I don't get that on the TV here...over on the other one though. Might head over once the 2nd starts if the feed on NHL.com is shitty.

tim said...

Yup. It's a "Sean Avery" only feed. Fuck. Found it on here anyway...

tim said...

Any idea when Paps is expected to come in? I wanna go out and get breakfast.

Benjamin said...

Did you see that catch Daeges made?

tim said...

That was a nice catch.

WOW lugo 2/2! Going for the cycle???

Benjamin said...

Who is this bearded Julio.

Ish said...

Well it is Mucho Lugo Love Day after all.

Benjamin said...

Nice baserunning. There's the Julio we know.

That's our Tim!

redsock said...

Bot was listed first in the online story, though that doesn't mean he'll be the first out of the pen. Masterson should go 3?

Ish said...

Tuned in just in time to see a DONG.

Benjamin said...

Doenges.

I haven't gotten to watch many ST games so far, but Lugo genuinely looks like he's hitting the ball harder. That rbi single was the same sort of grounder he would've hit last year, but whereas it would've just been a little dribbler before, now it's hit sharply and goes through the hole into the outfield.

Benjamin said...

GDGD classified it as a double. It looked more like a single with an advance to second on the throw.

Benjamin said...

Pap's in.

redsock said...

Lugo genuinely looks like he's hitting the ball harder.

It's the 45 pounds of new muscle!

We'll take whatever improvement there is. I trust Tito will still bat him 9th though.

...

Right, Tito?

redsock said...

FUCK YOU, GERBIL!!!!!!!!!!!

redsock said...

who is this with don?

redsock said...

Cafardo in duh booth.

Looking forward to seeing Bard and Tazawa.

Benjamin said...

It was Cafardo. Now it's Larry Lucchino.

Just got an email:

Yahoo! is reporting a 5-year, $30M extesion for Lester.

redsock said...

Yahoo:

Boston Red Sox left-hander Jon Lester, who overcame cancer to become one of the best pitchers in the American League, has agreed to a five-year, $30 million contract extension with a $13 million team option in 2014, a source close to the team told Yahoo! Sports on Saturday.

The deal is contingent on Lester passing a physical Tuesday. The impending deal is the largest given to a pitcher with around two years of service time, doubling the four-year, $15 million deal Cleveland's Fausto Carmona signed at the beginning of last season. If the Red Sox exercise the option, they will have kept Lester off the free-agent market for two years.

Bard looking sharp.

redsock said...

Bard: The KKK Took The Rays Away!

redsock said...

That was my Jere's impersonation, by the way.

Benjamin said...

Gotta love the Lester extension.

Benjamin said...

Bases loaded for Tek.

Or not.

redsock said...

Through five innings, the entire Tampa Bay lineup has been unable to get more hits than Julio Lugo.

Benjamin said...

Now Lou Gorman in the booth.

redsock said...

Gotta love the Lester extension.

Yep. A solid foundation for the next lustrum has been set.

Benjamin said...

Lugo needs a couple more hits now.

Benjamin said...

A lustrous Lester lustrum, eh.

redsock said...

I have been waiting for a few weeks to use that word!

Ish said...

Castig in the booth with Don while Jon Rish is doing the game on the radio.

Ish said...

Well, he was in the NESN booth. Back to radio.

A rather unsavory afternoon in the Boston sports world outside of Fort Myers.

redsock said...

I disagree.

I really disagree.

Pedroia batting 2nd, Yook 4th for USA against Venezuela.

USA - 00
VEN - 0

redsock said...

US having trouble!

USA - 000 2
VEN - 001 2

redsock said...

USA - 000 208
VEN - 001 200

Bugger.

6th: FY with a 2-run double and Yook (still hitting like a beast) with a 2-run dong. USA still batting.

redsock said...

Ven comes right back with a dong and a double!

redsock said...

single and a dp = another run.

US 10-5.

Ish said...

I really like seeing the Aussies are not only holding their own against Mexico, they're now CRUSHING them 17-7 in the top of the 8th!

I am kind of torn about the Canada-Italy game.

Joe Grav said...

Also, I'm glad to see that the US team seems to want to participate this year.

I'm not sure the roster stacks up with the top teams in the tournament, but the US should at least make the semifinals.

Ish said...

Joe I agree with you. I just hope it ends up being a good, close game between Italy and Canada.
