G66: Marlins 2, Red Sox 1 (5, rain)

Marlins - 020 00 - 2 8 1
Red Sox - 100 00 - 1 1 0
Game called at 11:24 -- after a delay of 2:26. Sox lose.

***

8:58 PM: Rain delay in the top of the 6th, with a man on first and no out for the Fish.

All the runs so far have come on solo home runs, Kevin Youkilis for Boston and Dan Uggla and Ronny Paulino for Florida.

Lester (5-8-2-0-4, 110) was less effective than his recent starts, but had settled down after throwing 54 pitches through the first two innings and 70 through the first three.

The Red Sox had soggy bats against Nolasco. Their only base runner for the first four innings was Yook's dong to left field. In the fifth, David Ortiz swing on a 3-0 pitch, popped up and reached when Emilio Bonifacio dropped the ball. After Mike Lowell flew to left, Ellsbury forced Tiz at second. LBJ stole second, but was left there as Jason Varitek struck out swinging.

The Nationals shut out the Yankees in New York 3-0.

***

Rocky Nolasco (7.62, 55 ERA+) / Jon Lester (4.76, 99 ERA+)

Lester has really turned a corner in his last three starts: 22 innings, 7 hits, 7 walks, 34 strikeouts, with opponents hitting .099/.175/.127.

Since missing the Yankees series (June 9-11) with a right shoulder sprain, Jacoby Ellsbury is 8-for-20 (.400) with two homers, five RBI, five runs scored, five walks and five stolen bases.

In his last 10 games, David Ortiz is hitting .400/.545/.920, with half of his hits going for extra bases (including four home runs).

Rain is in tonight's forecast.

I knew that article was going to kill you, RS.

If you don't want to click through, it's speculation (by Edes) that Pedro Martinez might sign with the Yankees.

Even typing those words hurts.

redsock said...

So they are one of four teams checking him out....

Would Pedro want to come into the AL East and possibly/probably get slapped around? I'm not so sure.

Better for him (and me, and everyone!) to stay in the NL.

Ish said...

I heard of the story from a Mets fan who also said NO!!!! Don't do it!!!

Maybe there's someone in the greater Montréal area saying the same thing.

Ish said...

Tarp is coming off the field!

L-girl said...

No thread for me tonight, I'm working on a big transcription job today and tomorrow, and that's enough typing.

Rain delay is good, I'll get some work in and have more relax time tomw.

Later.

redsock said...

so ... 4 minute delay?

5?

L-girl said...

Well that wasn't much of a rain delay. Oh well, a lot of work tomorrow, but at least I can watch the whole game tonight. Bye again.

Joba not handling the Nats' offense well - 5H 1BB in 3+IP. Only 1-0, though.

Nice to see that the Rays lost to Colorado, though they almost came back, scoring twice in the bottom of the ninth.

Zenslinger said...

Haw, haw. Joba walks in a run...his old backup catcher, Wil Nieves, takes the rBBi.

Ok, joining late, but I thought i would post some pics of b-fly

Graduation Saturday!!!

Good thing, too...he was slipping into a slump, at least relatively speaking.

Zenslinger said...

Fuck a duck.

Zenslinger said...

More bad news for Joba...but Lester's in the same boat.

redsock said...

i was going to ask if there was any bad joba news to cheer me up.

Zenslinger said...

There is...3-0 Washington, 2 on and 2 out. Joba's WHIP for the day up around his fat ears.

s1c said...

Arm!!!

Get those runs back boys

redsock said...

don: "grounded to short. hanley ramirez .............. is the other team's shortstop. nick green makes the play!"

Zenslinger said...

That's freakin' hilarious.

redsock said...

ugh - statue of lowell can't make the play

Zenslinger said...

Lester escapes more runs. Yay.

Craig Stammen, undistinguished in five starts for the Nats, is doing a great job through six vs. the Yanks (4 hits, all singles, no walks, no runs).

Joba, who is being replaced for the sixth, earns a pretty damn cheap "Quality" Start: 6IP, 3ER, 7H, 4BB.

Zenslinger said...

Correction, Joba replaced *after* the sixth.

s1c said...

Another lamb like inning.

redsock said...

still only 2-1.

s1c said...

Yep still only 2-1, but this game may be called early so we need to get the fragging lead.

redsock said...

Thats awful , Manny Acta came into this series on the cusp of losing his job, you wonder if Giradi might start hearing rumblings about his job security.....The Nats had 16 wins going into yankee stadium and they win 2-3....oy vay

Ish said...

They won't call this game now that it's in the middle of an inning will they? Thought they had to suspend it. (Technically that's what they're doing right now anyways)

s1c said...

I listened to the fan after the yankee series and they were already calling for his head. Mostly they were saying though its play offs at least or he's gone. Number 1 candidate for his replacement #21

s1c said...

Ok, so I post senior picks of my daughter and not one snide remark. Where are the women?

I think they will call it...it hasn't stopped raining here in CT all friggin day, what a miserable June, so far....

s1c said...

Frigging day is correct, I was out in it all day. Remember this is the same storm that caused a 4 hr delay in NY.

redsock said...

small crowd tonight, s1c.
i'll look later, if you like.

not to nit-pick , but I think it was 5 hr. the yankees actually gave away tickets for the fans who left and the fans who stayed, Lord there is plenty to give away.....

How about this shit

BOSTON (AP)—Major League Baseball has announced a scoring change that takes a double away from Boston second baseman Dustin Pedroia(notes) and instead charges Yankees right fielder Nick Swisher(notes) with an error.

redsock said...

i gotta go get my white-out, i guess.

Ish said...

I couldn't think of anything snide. Plus I'm barely here.

Ish said...

Marlins guys and umpires going into Red Sox dugout, Ian Browne on Twitter tells me - now Amalie on Twitter as well. They both expect the game to be called soon.

Ish said...

I like this Twitter stuff.

Browne: Umpires and Gonzalez have retreated to the Marlins dugout. Rain still POURING down.

Ish said...

Still no word.

redsock said...

SoSHer czar:
Honestly, I'm amazed they're waiting this one out. Still looking at WSD-88, the rain will be letting up (again, not stopping, letting up) between 12 and 1, and you have to figure that it'll take at least 30 minutes to an hour to get the tarp off, get diamond dry or whatever they have on the field, etc. and you're not looking at restarting this game until somewhere between 1 and 2 AM; you'll be finishing up between 2:30 and 3:30. They can get it in if they REALLY want to keep waiting, but the last pitch will be much closer to dawn than anyone's willing to admit right now.

I ain't leavin'.

s1c said...

still no word, well post as soon as there is, because I am using this time to scan photos from the last 33 years.

Ish said...

Now guys are poking their heads out of the dugout. Couple of guys heading to Marlins bullpen. One Red Sox player going to Sox bullpen. Nobody seems to know what it means tho.

Ish said...

Game is called.

Marlins win.

Cock.

Ish said...

So if Florida had another series in Boston scheduled, they could have suspended the game and played then - but since this is Florida's only trip to Boston the Red Sox lose by 1 run in the 6th.

Fuck you, Interleague.

redsock said...

shit - i see eck and don with a clean desk.

Congrats on the graduation.
She's a beautiful young lady. I assume she gets it from her mom :>
Does she have further ed. plans already?
(Sorry if you've already covered this in my many recent absences)

SoSock said...

GDGD now says Final as well.
Bah!
Although I don't think they would resume the game even if there was another trip coming up. Once the game is official, I think it's...official. Unless of course it's tied or the 1st inning wasn't completed

s1c said...

SoSock - yep, Marist in the fall, and yes she gets the looks from her mother (thank god)!!!

I can live with a .666 records through interleague.
