Red Sox - 000 000 116 - 8 9 0Lester was strong (6.1-4-0-3-4, 102), but simply ran out of gas in the seventh inning. With one out and Boston up 1-0, he walked the bases loaded (his only walks), as almost every one of his pitches was sailing up out of the strike zone.
Orioles - 000 000 002 - 2 6 0
Daniel Bard came in and calmly put out the fire, getting pinch-hitter Luke Scott to fly out to shallow center and Corey Patterson to foul out to third. Bard also pitched a perfect eighth, with two 3-1 grounders and a strikeout.
Kevin Youkilis's line drive home run to left put the Sox on the board and Josh Reddick's triple and Marco Scutaro's single upped the lead to 2-0 in the eighth. Those hits ended Guthrie's night (7.1-5-2-1-4, 95). He had been superb, at one point retiring 15 batters in a row.
Boston sent 11 men to the plate in the ninth inning, with Darnell McDonald, Bill Hall, and Youkilis each whacking two-run doubles.
The Rays lost to the Rangers (again) 6-1 and the Yankees lost to the Blue Jays 3-2 in 14 innings. Tampa Bay stays 2 GA of New York, but only 3.5 GA of Boston and Toronto.Jon Lester / Jeremy Guthrie
Jeremy Hermida is getting x-rays and an MRI on his ribs. Adrian Beltre is also out of the lineup (sore knee). Josh Reddick has been called up. The corresponding roster move has not been announced. [Now it has: Scott Atchison to Pawtucket.]Scutaro, SS
Pedroia, 2B
Ortiz, DH
Youkilis, 3B
Martinez, 1B
Drew, RF
Varitek, C
Reddick, CF
Hall, LF
On April 24, Lester had a bloated 8.44 ERA. Since then, he has made eight starts and posted a 1.43 ERA. Earned runs allowed in those starts: 0, 0, 1, 2, 4, 1, 0, 1. His overall ERA of 2.97 is 10th in the AL.
Lester leads the league in Fewest Hits per 9 Innings (6.19) and he is 3rd in Most Strikeouts per 9 Innings (9.54).

MFY/Jays in extra innings.
2-2 in the 12th
MFY - 000 020 000 000
TOR - 010 000 100 00
FKR - 0
TEX - 3

Tex with 5 strike outs. What is that called? Golden sombrero is four, right?
For me, 4 = the Golden Shower.
Not sure what to call 5.
Well, I guess you have to figure out what is better or worse (depending on your take) than a golden shower.
Maybe we should go with tradition and have 4 be sombrero, and 5 be the shower. Except 5 probably happens far less often than 4.
Just did a search at B-Ref. Last year, there were four times a player struck out 5 times (Jason Bay was one of them; so was Bill Hall!). And there were 100 instances of a player with 4 K in a game.
MFY - 000 020 000 000 0
TOR - 010 000 100 000 0
FKR - 010
TEX - 301
MFY lose!!!!!!
Yanks bite it. Yay.
I walked into my father-in-law's (the MFY fan) house just in time to see the bunt and winning hit. TV went off before the run crossed the plate.
MFY - 000 020 000 000 00 - 2 8 0
TOR - 010 000 100 000 01 - 3 10 0
VS new pitcher Gaudin: Encarnacion walks. Lewis sac bunts 5-4. Hill singles to left-center! (Gaudin threw 9 pitches)
FKR - 010 0
TEX - 310 0
Man, Beltre is a one-man wrecking crew. Didn't he take out LBJ?
Yes, he did.
Teixeira struck out 5 times!
Golden Shower!
FKR - 010 000 00
TEX - 310 002 00
Last chance for the Rays.
Crap, it still comes after your post of the FKR/TEX score.
Teixeira had 5 strike outs!
Rays lose, too. Could be a good couple of days, here!
Tex with 5 strike outs. What is that called? Golden sombrero is four, right?
That's what I meant when I posted this. But I guess coming right after your score of the FKR/TEX game that didn't register.
This isn't a must win, but it looks like a game we should win.
Let us gain a game.
Tommy Hunter (9-5-1-0-4, 117) vs Rays. Called up from AAA this week. First start of season. 101 degree heat.
So Rays and Yankees lose. We had better win, especially against Baltimore.
I will be missing the game again....and likely tomorrow also. Busy weekend---graduation party, wedding, etc., etc.
GO SOX!
I hate that Fangraphs takes the weekend off. I'm spoiled.
Lord Lynch is at tomorrow's game, so we have to win both.
Curtis Granderson is a jock, but he speaks like a human.
I like this guy.
I was about to announce Lord Lynch's presence at the game tonight, but... no need. :)
Kevin 1.035OPS Youkilis
Patrick, that's a nice piece. I've heard Ellsbury talk about Griffey, too - grew up idolizing him, aspiring to play like him. Very nice.
I think tonight's lineup is a testament to how well Theo has done giving us a deep, quality bench.
This lineup is still better than most teams everyday lineup.
SAFE!
Okay, maybe out.
LMFAO!!!
Varitek volunteered to play left tonight.
.....
You know, it's one thing to miss an inning because of work, it's another to miss an inning because of BLABBERMOUTH AT WORK. For fuck's sake, STHU.
I think tonight's lineup is a testament to how well Theo has done giving us a deep, quality bench.
Silly Patrick, you know Theo hasn't done anything good in years.
/sarcasm
I had to miss an inning so I could start making dinner. You know what? Fuck dinner.
And some of these strikes Lester's throwing tonight are nowhere near the plate.
Fuck the blabbermouth
Fuck dinner.
I smell a rant coming on.
WOW!!!!
That was just posted on Yahoo.
Seriously made me cry.
Sorry, I've been distracted by these links today.
This game needs some Ks and Dongs for them and us (respectively).
OOoooo, 3 pitch K! There we go.
Random YouTube postings. Patrick, it's a good thing you own this blog, that would be so threadjacking.
Seriously. I can change the theme at a moments notice.
You are very powerful.
Wow, that was a nice catch.
The catch by Patterson wasn't bad, but it's not like he high-fived a fan on the way down or anything.
There is only one Being.
Yep. That reminds me. I was at Camden for Manny's 500th. That was great. All of the fans were into it. A very long standing ovation.
Oh that's great! I miss Manny.
"Red Sox not expecting shit out of Julio Lugo." Or at least that's what I wanted Don to say.
See that Adrian? That's how you make a catch without trampling anybody.
Hit the pole, no?
Ooh that was close.
(chant) Hit the pole! Hit the pole! Hit the pole!
Can you tell?
Tough to tell...
Guess not. :(
Maybe dudes in yellow shirts shouldn't sit next to the yellow poles.
Dumb guy on MASN (Thorne?) is asking, "What if it wraps around the pole on the foul side and lands behind the pole where it would be fair?" Really? He has to know the rule, doesn't he???
Dumb Guy on MASN is a redundancy.
Okay, I finally relented and ordered tix from the Red Sox for the Dodgers game. They still are lumping them in with another game. So, I have two tix to the Diamondbacks game on 6/17. Anyone interested?
G19, Row 14, Seats 1 & 2. $52 face, plus fees = $112.50. I'll sell them for $90 for the pair to a fellow Sox fan.
Are you going to cast a wider net than who happens to be threading today?
Sure, how should I do that? I don't want to be obnoxious about selling them.
YOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOK!!!
I was just thinking if you need to sell tickets, gamethreads may not be the best way. There are a lot of lurkers, but it's a weekend, and lurkers may not come out, etc. etc.
I'm sure there are lots of places to sell tix - SoSH, Craigslist, etc.
YOOOUUUKKK!!
I was in the process of writing, "It's time to score some runs."
Now that's what I wanted to see.
yoooooooooooook
Love that sweaty water!
I've never tried SoSH. I'll check over there. I usually use StubHub but hate paying the fees.
Heh, just realized why you were talking about 5 Ks in a game earlier. Ain't no sombrero big enough to hide that shame.
Right, I figured you'd rather deal directly than go thru Stub Hub. I try never to use stuff like that (not that I have tickets to sell on any kind of regular basis).
You can always use CL and ask people to pay through PayPal.
is the pen up?
OK, Julio, you're still on our payroll, so the least you can do for us is hit into a quick DP. Thanks!
Bard is up
bard has been up.
leaving pitches up -- tiring.
dp pls.
okay, tito. it's about that time
Gah. WTF happened here, bases loaded on BBs!
Okay Bard, first pitch they are able to make contact with = DP.
sid just ran out of gas.
wow - HUGE ovation for that pop out!!!!
BARD = BALLS
Shakespeare to the rescue!! We love you Bard!
Shakespeare...done.
I've missed Rudolph.
bogar should have waved him in ....
"24 minute wait for jeremy guthrie"
Yeah! 2-0
Scutaro jetered that one.
Rudolph?
I thought Rudolph was the nickname you all eventually came up with for Reddick. (I was lurking back then). Remember that game when he had a bloody nose? The talk went from red nose to Rudolph.
I must have missed that thread, definitely didn't know the name or the bloody nose.
I'm an off-and-on threader myself.
Obie just said Bard "did a first-rate Houdini". He's reading JoS!
hola jos!
reporting to you from florida for the last time...enjoying this shutting out of the Os...day 2.
back to canada tomorrow morning!
victor and bard going thru a spring training drill this inning
florida .... get the fuck outta there!
You guys are still in Florida? You have a much higher tolerance than I do. :)
no tarballs here. yet.
Do you miss Winston?
We love the hot weather/beaching it, but our tolerance for my dad is long past its end! Looking forward to getting the fuck outta here!
We missed Winston the day we dropped him off to Steph's friends!
Found it. Rudolph
Puppy > > > dad !
wtf is wrong with remy?
wtf is wrong with remy?
Do you want a list or is this a rhetorical q?
he was having a huge problem raeding his promos. like say 2 words, wait two seconds, say 2 more words, wait two seconds ...
i couldn't hear any laughing.
I gotta pack up to go home. It would be good to score a few more runs before I have to leave.
That would have been funny.
DO'B: These are the Orioles.
The left fielder was not even running!!
YES! The Microwave comes thru
Evening. A Lovely Bloop Double evening from Maryland!
Did he think it was going foul?
I gotta run. Don't drink the water, it is DIRTY!
Patterson -- Is he that slow? He's their leadoff hitter.
someone yells to hall "line it in the gap, baby"
next pitch --he does!
The wheels are falling off...
Now if we lose tomorrow, you'll know who to blame!
Have a great time Lynch. Have you been to Camden before?
I went there three years ago and saw them beat the Rockies.
It's fun to go to a Sox game there. It is amazing how many Sox fans there are. You will feel at home in your Red Sox garb.
Pretty park, don't you think?
BTW, how was your trip up the Parkway?
Try booking a hotel in Baltimore! Currently staying just outside Washington watching the game on MASN.
John Lackey does not fill me with hope.
Bard awesome tonight.
Hotel rooms are impossible to come by during these games. And crazily expensive!
We had to cut our trip short by a day so did smaller parts. From Galax up to Roanoke and then did about 70 miles on the Skyline Drive today which was absolutely amazing. You don't realise how high up you are until you turn off....
Yep, I've got MASN too.
It is gorgeous. My husband and I were on the Skyline Drive last Sunday. We went up to Baltimore last Saturday to get away and drove the Skyline Drive back.
a sweaty slam?
Oops, change that. It was Sunday/Monday. I forgot about Memorial Day.
But, I guess Memorial Day doesn't mean anything to all of you outsiders. :]
samuel probably thinking about quitting ...
I'm surprised Bogar didn't want to clear the bases!
Ok, got to go...
91 degrees and a chance of storms. Story of my week.....
Turn Lackey around!
This is a tough debut for Samuel.
Poor Bot won't get a save.
somewhere kirk is yelling at his TV, "oh yeah *I* was the problem, fire the manager and all will be fine. well, fuck you!"
Not only that, he's saying, "Look at my record against the Sox this year."
Hey Nelson, we need some outs please.
i want this shutout, joe.
THROW A STRIKE!
unacceptable.
Now Pap has to warm up again. Along with RamRam.
TP? That would be fitting.
One.
dp pls.
Crap, no shutout.
Least we didn't lose the shutout on our own dime.
Well, there is that.
Poor Bot won't get a save.
Nelson's trying his hardest to get him one.
it's the 9th inning that would not end.
Two.
bullshit -- stick it in his ear.
I was wondering if Jason Heyward's rookie season was comparing at all to Ted Williams'. He's got a 151 OPS+. Williams had a 160 OPS+ his rookie season.
But Ted Williams had a lifetime OPS of 1.116 (190 OPS+). Wow.
The water is Muddy!!!
3.5 GB!
(and 1.5 GB the mfy)
Three.
Watch out MFY, here we come.
Attendance was 40,001!
If this pattern were to repeat itself again tomorrow, that would be something else.
When I left work it was 6-0 in the 9th. Get home to learn it ended 8-2. Hmm.
