G73: Rockies 8, Red Sox 6

Red Sox - 000 204 000 - 6 12 0
Rockies - 022 100 003 - 8 13 0
It took only eight pitches for Jonathan Papelbon to give up the lead and the game, allowing a solo shot to Ian Stewart to start the bottom of the ninth and then a single and a one-out, game-winning, pinch-hit, two-run home run to Jason Giambi. It was Colorado's first win this season in a game in which they trailed after seven innings.

Lackey (6.2-10-5-0-7, 110) put Boston in a 4-0 hole, but he helped the comeback against Jimenez (5.2-10-6-0-7, 106; ERA now 1.60) with his stick. Daniel Nava had doubled home two runs in the fourth and he doubled again in the sixth, scoring Adrian Beltre. Then, with two outs, Darnell McDonald belted a two-run, game-tying dong to left-center. Lackey followed that with a double to deep center field and he scored the go-ahead run on Marco Scutaro's single to right. (Lackey came into the game with a career batting line of 1-for-31; he went 2-for-3!)

It was Papelbon's second blown save of the season, and his fourth loss, but it was especially painful because the Red Sox had managed to score six runs against Jimenez, who had allowed only three runs in April and four in May. In 13 of his 14 starts this year, he had allowed 0, 1 or 2 runs.

The Yankees beat the Diamondbacks 6-5 in 10 innings and the Rays lost to the Padres 5-4.
Example
John Lackey / Ubaldo Jimenez
Scutaro, SS
Pedroia, 2B
Martinez, C
Ortiz, 1B
Beltre, 3B
Nava, LF
Reddick, RF
McDonald, CF
Lackey, P
Adrian Beltre has an 11-game hitting streak (and has hit safely in 16 of his last 17 games). ... Daniel Nava has reached base in all nine of his major league games.

Also:
Padres/Rays, 7 PM
Yankees/Diamondbacks, 9:30 PM
Example
Lots of good stuff happened on June 23:

1910 - Three members of the New York Giants are jailed for attacking a fan who had been heckling them during a game in Brooklyn.

1946 - Eddie Waitkus and Marv Rickert of the Cubs hit back-to-back, inside-the-park home runs in the fourth inning, but Chicago loses 15-10 to the Giants at the Polo Grounds.

1963 - Mets outfielder Jimmy Piersall hits his 100th career home run and celebrates by running around the bases backward.

1981 - Pawtucket and Rochester resume and finish what is the longest game in professional baseball history. The game had been suspended on April 18-19 after 32 innings. The teams play only one inning, as Pawtucket scores a run for a 3-2 win in 33 innings. The time of the game was 8:05. There were 882 pitches thrown. Rochester's Tom Eaton, Cal Ripken Jr., and Dallas Williams each have a record 15 plate appearances.
Rochester - 000 000 100 000 000 000 001 000 000 000 000 - 2 18 3
Pawtucket - 000 000 001 000 000 000 001 000 000 000 001 - 3 21 1

Continuing the earlier comment I posted in the other thread re: the earthquake, yeah, it was scary. Wasn't sure what was going on and everything was shaking. Ended up being a 5.5 or something, which was pretty strong since everyone could feel it.

I'm surprised you guys felt nothing and neither did my dad in hamilton. As soon as it happened, I went on twitter to see what the hell was going on (how's that for 2010 news search) and wondered if was something to do with the G20.

It was felt in Waterloo, and all over the northeast Canada/US according to twits. Haven't looked at any news since then, but it was crazy sitting here and watching the google news feed of tweets/posts/news update every second with new "wtf" comments about it.

tim said...

Also, I'm disappointed at the lack of post about the Red Sox mickey mouse statue being vandalized in Cali :P

laura k said...

Oh here you are. I posted this on the other thread with your FIRST earthquake comment, so here it is again.

* * * *

Yes, 5.5, epicentre 61 kms north of Ottawa. Don't go by us, tons of people in Mississauga felt it! But we didn't. All my Ottawa and Toronto Facebook contacts are going nuts over it.

laura k said...

My favourite comment so far:

"Reports say earthquake caused tsunami at the Fake Lake"

Brilliant!!

Apparently many people in Ottawa thought it was a G20-related bomb.

allan said...

1:41 pm.

I wish I had noticed it.

tim said...

Downgraded it to 5 so I was right on the money when I made my initial estimate :)

Great news article I'm reading now:

"On Parliament Hill, the historic buildings were evacuated, but there was little evidence of damage. Staff were told to go home."

Fucking useless fucks.

They say it was felt down here in Rhode Island, but I didn't feel anything. And yes, I remember the Longest Game!

tim said...

Heh, I was mildly amused at the first letter pattern of the 2-9 hitters of Colorado.

Ubaldo will be screaming for 5-7 of that pattern by the third inning, me hopes.

L-Girl: "My favourite comment"

"Favourite." You Canadian!

Rick (f/k/a westcoastsox) said...

LOL @tim's comment re the letter pattern. Can BR find out if there has ever been a lineup filled with 9 players whose last names start with the same letter? Or are consecutive?

allan said...

wcs: dunno. i do remember that last year we had a lineup with several players in a row whose first name started with J.

august 1: we had the first names of the 6-7-8-9-1 batters go:
Jason
Jason
Jed
Josh
Jacoby

Rob said...

Ironic that the longest Tennis match ever happens on the anniversary of the longest pro baseball game ever...!

allan said...

ish - i saw news of that at jere's blog and clicked. i first thought it was a charity/world record attempt - like two friends playing for 20 hours or whatever -- then i realized

IT'S REAL!!

AT FUCKING WIMBLEDON!!!!

i am having a hard time believing this happened. or how it happened. it is mind boggling to the extreme.

allan said...

nesn!

bah - ubaldo ain't shit!!!!

Patrick said...

YAY! Besibol!

Amy said...

game time

Rob said...

Allan - I couldn't believe it at all, myself. I tuned in when they were at 30 games and I was very confused for a minute, then it began to become clearer and clearer, and watching the next TWENTY-NINE GAMES, I was in absolute awe.

Still am... and they're not done yet!

allan said...

what might be the baseball equivalent?

if this game goes 85 innings and both teams match scoring various times along the way?

i sometimes dream of waking up and seeing the results of games that are like 189-46. maybe like that.

(yes, i have had those dreams many times. odd!)

Rob said...

Jose Reyes has hit a triple, single, and home run in the Mets vs. Tigers game tonight.

Rob said...

And it's still just the 7th inning.

tim said...

Whaaaaaat! I've gotta go read about Wimbledon.

Fuck Jiminez.

allan said...

THE FIFTH SET ALONE shattered the record for the longest game by time in history.

My comment at Jere's blog hinted at the Iowa Baseball Confederacy. You know the novel? By WP Kinsella*, the guy who wrote Shoeless Joe (aka Field of Dreams)?

*: Canadian!

Rob said...

I actually tried to calculate that today. If you think of a point as similar to a pitch or two, then a game an at-bat... You'd have to take the MLB at-bat per inning average and calculate that based on how many games were played... The range would actually be in the neighborhood of 33-38 innings, I would estimate.

allan said...

somebody better release that on dvd.

legally or not ...

tim said...

What is this soccer at fenway shit?

They better not ruin the field.

Rob said...

So far 163 games have been played in this match... and in a fit of clownshoes right here:

If the 5th set was more traditional, say, 8-6, that would be a total of 59 games.

And in the 5th set ALONE, each player has WON 59 games.

Rob said...

They're going to put grass over the part of the diamond that would be on the pitch and they'll be able to fit the soccer field on it, I believe they're even able to avoid the mound.

Rob said...

R.A. Dickey, the knuckleballer, pitching in this game and he was still batting in the 7th inning.

tim said...

I just hope it doesn't get torn up.

I don't really get tennis, and I'm too lazy to look it up, but the way I understand it is that in the 5th set, someone has to win 2 in a row in order to win?

That's fucking nuts, it'd be like (if the bottom of the inning didn't end the game) teams repeatedly scoring then the other team tying it up, and on and on and on...man.

Rob said...

Yup. Tiebreakers for the first four sets, then you have to win by 2 games in the 5th set.

And what happened here was one of them repeatedly went up by a game and the other guy came back and tied it. The other guy never went ahead himself. He was always, EVERY TIME, coming from behind.

Patrick said...

I hope Lackey can keep this up. Jimenez looks as advertised.

tim said...

mmm, lackey on his way to the new K record.

allan said...

i've decided the tennis match did not actually happened. it's a huge psy-ops.

what for, i don't know. ... but it's gotta be big ...

Rick (f/k/a westcoastsox) said...

6 batters, 5 strikeouts in the first inning. It's going to be one of those soccer-type scores, like 1-0?

Rick (f/k/a westcoastsox) said...

Great sports day, what with World Cup, Wimbledon madness, and the 27K Lackey performance.

Rob said...

I made sure to continue watching just because this had never happened, and is sure to never happen again. Once in a lifetime, and maybe once in forever.

Had to watch it, and I will (try to) watch it again tomorrow. I'm not even much of a Tennis fan.

And then the World Cup... By 2 PM this had already been an amazing sports day.

Patrick said...

I'm watching Min @ Mil on mute, and I am always shocked at how big Fielder is. That doesn't look healthy.

Rob said...

What the fuck - Ole ole ole chants at Citi Field? Prompted by the sound system there, but still!

Reyes grounds out to second. Maybe he'll get another shot at the cycle.

allan said...

he's a vegan - he'll be fine.

---

and the match began on tuesday and was suspended, then picked up today. now it'll go into thursday!!!

allan said...

lackey will K 27 and ubaldo will pitch a perfect game?

Rob said...

Yup. They finished the 4th set tiebreak, suspended the game, came back today, began the 5th set in the early afternoon today and was suspended again shortly after 9 PM.

Amy said...

Lackey is once again...lacking.

WE NEED SOME MORE PITCHING.

allan said...

lackey allows a double, triple, and home run -- but no single (yet).

We'll be fine!

DARNELL!!! Man, that hit felt like a huge victory.

Rob said...

In Chicago this afternoon there was a tornado warning around 6 ET which resulted in strong straight-line winds of up to 80mph... there's a live streaming webcam right outside of Wrigley Field that I watched the storm on, and even now as the sky to the north and west is clearing, I can still see lightning flashes reflecting off of the side of the Wrigley Field building.

Rob said...

Lackey would have better luck bunting with his nose.

tim said...

bunt? que the fuck?

Amy said...

Lackey no help at the plate.

meunier said...

What's with all the derecho's hitting Chicago this month?

Patrick said...

Joe declaring a NYY victory because Dontrelle Willis is starting for Arizona.

Defeatist, but he has a good point.

Amy said...

I doubt Lackey is going to see 27 outs tonight, let alone 27 Ks.

Rob said...

I'd love to see Dontrelle find his mojo at least for one night against the Yankees.

But it's all stacked up against us here tonight, with us facing Ubaldo and the Yankees facing Dontrelle. Oh well.

Rick (f/k/a westcoastsox) said...

Ha, Amy, but he has allowed the cycle already, and it's only the third inning. He's working on his second one.

allan said...

he may not see one-half of 27 batters.

Amy said...

Well, at least we aren't using up HH or Lester facing Ubaldo.

allan said...

well, this is #13, so i guess he will.

tim said...

Fuck lackey. Making me drink.

Going to finish the wine that was started yesterday.

laura k said...

Hi thread. I'm back early and making myself a bloody mary.

My campaign friends had champagne and a gift for me to celebrate our citizenship! So I am a little tipsy, must get more so.

Nice catch, Daniel! But a run scores.

Rob said...

R.A. Dickey went 8 scoreless innings for the Mets and only gave up 4 hits and 2 walks.

meunier said...

Ugh, getting 4 against Ubaldo does not seem likely.

nick said...

Can't read the whole comment thread just now, but... geez, I hate Lackey; tennis wildness is insane; didn't feel a thing all the way down here; what the fuck, Beltre?

Can we trade Lackey for, uh, a few burritos and a soft serve machine?

Amy said...

Not looking like a fun game for our side tonight.

Rob said...

Guess I'll join the drinking party.

Amy said...

I am with you on Lackey, Nick. I'd even throw in Ramram on the deal.

allan said...

if tek is the cactus, is lackey now "soft serve"?

tim said...

send farrell out to the mound with a memo for lackey

"ideally, we would like to see you get outs without runs scoring on them"

Amy said...

Drinking definitely seems to be the right approach tonight.

Amy said...

Soft serve. He sure serve them softballs.

tim said...

I don't think with Lackeys, er, stature, he'd last through 118 points of a tennis match. Let alone 5.

nick said...

soft serve always melts down on a hot summer day.

Patrick said...

If someone would take his contract, I would include the burritos and the soft serve machine. I'd even throw in Mike Lowell.

tim said...

Testing this mlb audio streaming thing on the iphone for 5 min to see how much data it eats up. Maybe I'll go 10 min since it only tracks it by MB.

Kathryn said...

Just got into the car to start the 2+ hour trip home. We'll have the sox on the radio but a little better pitching would be nice. Great sports day. We were able to stay in the hotel room just until the winning goal before having to leave for the berklee tour. Then watched the tennis marathon after the tour. Crazy stuff. I don't know how those guys were still standing.

allan said...

our feed now says "rain delay" and we have blue jays radio

nick said...

I thought about including Lowell, but I like him too much. seem ignominious. that's a word. wonder if it's what I meant.

Rob said...

For me it's Sea Dog blueberry wheat ale with a scoop of frozen blueberries.

Amy said...

OK, leadoff hitter on base!

allan said...

okay, back to see the hit. assholes.

laura k said...

ha, didn't even realize I posted that right after Tim's drinking comment.

Amy said...

Nah, Lowell is a good guy. We may not need him, but I wouldn't insult him that way.

Amy said...

Rain delay? Is this earthquake related?

meunier said...

Is the Sea Dog beer sold at Hadlock Field?

Amy said...

Mrs. G---how did your son like Berklee?

HIT!

allan said...

no - some rogers employee/asshole hit the wrong button.

nick said...

make it "within one", oh father.

meunier said...

Steal 3rd?

Rob said...

Not sure, but this beer is brewed and bottled in Portland.

Amy said...

Maybe he was shaken up by the earthquake?

We felt nothing out here on the Cape, btw, but apparently back home in western MA, there were some tremors.

Amy said...

Blueberries in beer just seems wrong.

(Delayed reaction.)

Rob said...

Cool thing about this Sea Dog blueberry is it's local, but they also sold it at the neighborhood grocery store where my sister lives just outside of Charlotte, NC.

allan said...

well, the earthquake was 8 hours ago ...

Rob said...

If you like blueberries, blueberries in blueberry wheat bear is brilliant and tasty.

meunier said...

Ohhh he should have crushed that!

Rob said...

A guy I follow on Twitter who lives in the GTA wrote, "Best text from the earthquake: 'Excuse me.'"

nick said...

frack.

nick said...

have to head out to radio land.. two hours of droney scrappy blippy-ness.

Beltre, bah! I want runs, dammit.

Amy said...

I like a fruity beer, but not fruit IN my beer! I just like to drink without chewing.

Amy said...

We really need to score here, Nava.

Amy said...

YES!

meunier said...

THE ROOKIE!

Patrick said...

NAVA!!!!!!!!!!!

Rob said...

Down south I had (no fruit in it, mind you) a strawberry ale which was amazing.

Patrick said...

We need a nick for Nava.

allan said...

NAVA -- on base in all 10 games of his career.

allan said...

OLIVOBALLA

Amy said...

My friend's daughter had a baby in March named Nava Grace; the parents and grandparents are all Sox fans. I am sure they had NO idea that there would be a rookie star named NAVA on the team this year.

(Nava is Hebrew for lovely or something. Ofer would know...)

Kathryn said...

Nava!! Sorry for the delay. Sketchy cell service.

Amy, he really liked Berklee. He likes that it is a music school with liberal arts opportunities. He was very impressed with the music options. He is not thrilled about it not having a real campus but says that is overcome by it's proximity to Fenway.

Rick (f/k/a westcoastsox) said...

Nava means "beautiful" in Hebrew. Not sure how that translates into a nickname. It's not like we're going to call him "Cutiepie" or anything.

Rob said...

Great throw by Reddick!

Amy said...

I like his priorities, MrsG---music, liberal arts, and Fenway! My mother's next door neighbor's son just finished his sophomore year at Berklee and loves it there. His parents were a bit concerned about the lack of campus, but apparently it has not been an issue.

Stupid baserunning, Stewart!

meunier said...

Saved us a run also.

Amy said...

Lovely, beautiful---I was close! It was a new name to me, but now every time I hear Nava during a game, I chuckle.

meunier said...

WTF was he swinging away?

Amy said...

How was he safe??

Kathryn said...

It was a good tour.

Stop it lackey!

Rick (f/k/a westcoastsox) said...

Lackey is bored with spreading the first cycle over 2 innings, so he's trying to squeeze this one all in one inning?

Rick (f/k/a westcoastsox) said...

Just saw this on Twitter: opponents batting .204 against Lester, and over .300 against Lackey.

Amy said...

I hate Lackey. Always have, still do.

Kathryn said...

What time was this earthquake? I felt some strange dizziness/vertigo for a brief time this afternoon. Mostly on/after elevators.

Amy said...

WCS, you back in Pacific time or still on the east coast?

allan said...

1:41 pm est

Amy said...

If Beckett comes back, can we send Lackey away?

meunier said...

Well he just got a hit at least

Amy said...

Has this guy's BABIP changed since this game started? (I have no idea how the calculate that one.)

Rick (f/k/a westcoastsox) said...

West Coast. Have like 5 trips east in July and August. Dreading it. Am struggling to keep 7/28 free (when L and A are in town and we have tix to the SF Giants game with Zenslinger).

Amy said...

Of course, we do not need Lackey to hit in 90% of the games in the season.

Kathryn said...

Hmm. It was more like 12:30 til 1:45 or so, until I got back to the hotel. Probably not related unless I have some premoniscient abilities.

Amy said...

Ah, yes, JOS 2 West Coast Style!

Your run around NYC sounded incredible.

allan said...

6 for 17 this game, so far. that's better than .333.

Rick (f/k/a westcoastsox) said...

Yeah, I'm running the marathon 7/25, so I should be able to barely walk again by the SF game.

Amy said...

Oh, well, wasted those hits.

Amy said...

Marathon in SF? Those hills must be killers!

Amy said...

What was it before the game? Below 200, IIRC?

Rick (f/k/a westcoastsox) said...

Odd start to NYY-ARI, bottom of the first, walk-single-single(thrown out at the plate)-walk. Then K-K. Then single, runner thrown out at 3rd (but not before 2 runs scored).

2-1 ARI after 1. In the first inning, there were 5 walks, 4 singles, and 2 strikeouts. Willis looks horrible, but so does Vazquez. True suckfest.

Rob said...

Don & Remy riding on a rickshaw? Awwwww. BROMANCE.

Rick (f/k/a westcoastsox) said...

SF Marathon actually not that hilly. Goes around Embarcadero by water. Hill to get up to Golden Gate Bridge - get to run the center of the bridge and back. Then a jaunt through Golden Gate Park, which is flat. The last 6 miles are flat or downhill, mostly. I plan to steal some poor kid's skateboard.

allan said...

we can come back, but we have to stop allowing runs.

Kathryn said...

Ok, my turn to drive. I'm with Allan...stop giving up runs.

Bye.

Amy said...

Sounds like another beautiful run. Not that I can run, but we did bike some of that route in SF.

Amy said...

Beautiful Nava!

tim said...

Back for some more NAVA!!!!!!

That was a fucking NAVA hit!

allan said...

NAH-VER!

Amy said...

So we can get runs off the guy. We just need to stop letting them score. (I realize that has already been said.)

Rick (f/k/a westcoastsox) said...

Amy said...

I think you missed Ish drinking blueberry beers.

Probably won't get there until around 7, if thats not too late for your dinner. I have class until 4, then have a couple of hours of work I *should* do. But hopefully class will end early or I'll say fuck it and defer the work until Friday.

allan said...

L sez "defer"

Rob said...

Actually it was blueberry beer. Singular, unfortunately. But then again, that's about how many beers I drink.

I heard the expression "How's your dick?" at some point or another and felt it (barely) appropriate here.

We better win this game! This is so fucking great!

laura k said...

Lackey! Holy shit!

tim said...

Anyway, before that awesomeness, I was going to ask if you have a suggested route. I'm at Keele and the 407. Figured 407 to 427 to 403 or some combination of them roads.

Amy said...

There is perhaps some continuing appeal to that old style of baseball.

laura k said...

OK Ish, you blame the beer, I'll blame the champagne. Or the vodka.

I'm trying to decide if I should make myself another bloody mary. What do you say, threaders?

allan said...

we want to eat and relax a bit before the game. i'd say 5, 5:30 if you can swing it.

Rick (f/k/a westcoastsox) said...

I think mattymatty was on the mark: Jimenez can't win them all. See everyone later - will be listening to the rest of this one in the car.

allan said...

i did not seriously thing we'd come back so quick.

lackey's 2-for-3 may be nuttier than the tennis match

laura k said...

Tim, if you don't mind taking the 407, that's fastest. 407 to 427 to Burhamthorpe, then local west on B'thorpe. Or 407 to 403 to Cawthra, and you're right around the corner from us. Do you have our address?

If you don't want the 407... let me think.

Patrick said...

(alleged) best pitcher in baseball, meet the best offense in baseball.

Humbling, I know. Just ask Halladay.

tim said...

I love the 407. Not the fees. But I enjoy taking it and don't mind paying since I have a transponder (and the car is registered to my dad so I don't get the bills!)

Re: Bloody Mary, DO IT!!!!

laura k said...

6:00 latest. No to work! Come right after your classes. It's our only chance to hang out all summer, probably. (Ok, maybe that's not true, cause we'll see you in Stratford. But that's not the same.)
