Diamondbacks - 101 110 001 - 5 12 2David Ortiz belted a two-run home run in the third -- and reached base four times -- but Daniel Nava was the hero of the late innings.
Red Sox - 102 012 02x - 8 10 1
Nava doubled to start the fifth and scored on Marco Scutaro's dobule. He singled in the middle of the sixth inning rally -- and a throwing error on the play increased Boston's lead from 5-4 to 6-4 -- and he had an RBI double in the eighth. Scutaro drove in three runs; and Beltre singled and walked twice.
Lackey hung on long enough to get a W (6-8-4-2-5, 112), but was not particularly sharp.
The Yankees lost 7-1 and the Rays lost 3-1 -- New York and Tampa Bay each managed only four hits each -- so they remained tied for first, with the Red Sox now only 2 GB. Boston has not been this close to first place since April 15 (after G8).Dan Haren / John Lackey

Yankees/PhilliesJune 17:
Rays/Atlanta
1880: John Montgomery Ward of the Providence Grays pitches a perfect game against the Buffalo Bisons (5-0). It is the second perfect game in National League history and the second in six days! Lee Richmond of the Worcester Ruby Legs beat the Cleveland Blues 1-0 on June 12. It will be 84 years before another NL pitcher throws a perfect game (Jim Bunning, June 21, 1964).
1915: Zip Zabel comes out of the Cubs bullpen with two outs in the first inning against Brooklyn. He pitches 18.1 innings -- the longest relief appearance in major league history -- and wins 4-3. (Another likely unbreakable record.)
2005: The Arizona Diamondbacks give up 10 runs in the third inning of a 13-6 loss to Cleveland. In their previous game, June 15 against the White Sox, they had allowed 10 runs in the sixth inning. The last team to suffer 10-run innings in consecutive games was the 1969 Mets, who did it in both games of a doubleheader, July 30 against the Astros (11 runs in the ninth inning of G1 and 10 runs in the third inning of G2).

PA notes:
Matsuzaka threw a 39-pitch bullpen session today that he described as "normal." He will throw a three-inning simulated game on Saturday.
The Sox signed 1B Ryan Shealy to a minor-league deal. Shealy, 30, was released yesterday by the Rays. He played with the Royals and Rockies from 2005-08.
Shealy exercised an opt-out clause with the Rays. He wasn't dumped.
SoSHer Section15Box113 reminds us that Theo tried to trade for Shealy in 2005. It was the failed Larry Bigbie deal -- Bigbie and Shealy for Kelly Shoppach, Adam Stern, Abe Alvarez, and another unnamed minor leaguer.
I rocked my interview for full-time teaching this AM and am psyched for 3pm (out here) beisballa action.
That's great, Zen! I know that's what you have been aiming for. When will you hear?
I am on the Cape, and we just got a call that Rebecca may be having contractions. Two weeks early, so could be just false labor. So we are sitting with our bags, deciding whether to unpack or to put everything back in the car...
Looks like false labor for now. We have unpacked, Harvey had a beer, and now we will eat. Enjoy the game.
We're on the subway headed to downtown Chicago.
Go Sox.
i hate rogers cable, but they are giving me nesn when the package is determined to torture me with gracie! so yay rogers -- for 3 hours.
Amy, this is your daughter? How wonderful.
enjoy wrigley!!! if i wasn't a sox fan, i'd love it as much as fenway. maybe more, because it lacks the huge commercial-playing scoreboard.
come on, lackey, i want you to show me tonight you can be an top of the line starter. it's the fuckin' d-bags, for fuck's sake.
FY SB!
remy: "haren has a high leg kick" -- replay shows haren's foot maybe 1-2 inches above the ground -- "well, it's not that he has a high leg kick ..."
tied, mofos.
looked catchable off the bottom of the wall, but if nava thought he couldn't grab it, he did the next best thing -- quick throw in to hold it to a single.
good freakin' lord - remy is *butchering* that soccer promo. is it against the law for him to look at it before he goes on the air?
smart decision to make that throw.
way late
QUADRANGULAR!!!!!!!!!
but still alone
Just checking in before I get to studying for the night. How about we stop giving up baserunners and coughing up the lead???
Also, regarding Rogers - I'm going to call and find out why they only show certain games in HD. It's bullshit, I don't think we need 10 NHL/NBA HD channels which are NEVER used during May - September. The past couple of Sox games have been on regular EI, but not in HD. There's no reason for it, especially when I'm paying for the package.
I've gotta stick around for a bit now, don't want this to be a one man thread.
thank you!
so, ummm, you get to help me carry a dryer out of the basement next week ...
nesn shows a NL pitcher HR allowed graphic:
the dbacks pitchers we are seeing in this series are the top 3, followed by a brewer (i think) as #4, so don says the starters in this series are 3 of the top 4.
oy.
That's cool. This game feels like a dryer being carried out of your basement.
lol, TC doing the weezer promo. guess they took remy off.
I got so excited when I opened the slingbox program and tuned to NESN.
Don said nothing for about 3 pitches, and I thought they were airing it without commentary. Then my hopes were crushed.
They had some hockey game a couple years ago on CBC that had no commentary, it was amazing.
lackey is lacking.
richardson: "hey amy, i'm warming up!"
may have to check out this remy playing the OF story...
Lackey is crappy.
Its OK if he gives up 8 in 4 1/3, as long as he gets the W is all that matters.
remy: you got to wonder if lackey is bothered by that ball that hit him in the foot earlier in the ball game.
redsock: you got to wonder if lackey is bothered by the fact that he
sucks.
if he goes 4.1, he can't get a win, silly.
Maybe i meant he gets the last 2 outs of the 5th after giving up 8...and, and, leave me alone!

Can't say I've been impressed with Lackey.
i'm not sure anyone can, unless you look at the hits and runs and see that they are not really hits and runs.
i would like some potato chips.

If the Sox cared about children's cancer, they'd steal more bases.
why am i suspicious that that company signed up AFTER ellsbury was out of action? :>)

gotta fan this clown
he is 0 for 10 in the series, with 8 K
and 237 K this year
whew - maybe a gift!
that coulda been bad...
FLO - on base 4 for 4
shouldn't you go to 2B and stand there and watch the ball? if it's caught, you can easily get back to 1B. if it hits the wall, you are clear to get to 3B, at least.
bad running by tiz.
bot & atchison up
awhile back, don said the rays and atl were 0-0 in the 4th.
now he says they are still scoreless, but gives no inning. that info is worthless.
don: "jeemer has allowed no runs in 13 of his last 16 appearances."
but maybe he has allowed a shit load of inherited runners? please give us relevant info, okay?
grumpy and gettin' drunk,
redsock
ha ha - fy says fuck you!

OK, I admit that I am drunk. Two really good cosmos, no idea what the score is. Did we get dirty water? HELP.
drunk is good - one out to go!
Very good, Allan. That makes my night! OK, I can sleep tonight--no grandchild yet, and the Sox win. Peace reigns, except in the real world!
yoinks. that was close.

come on, bot, ya hick, close it out.
arizona has lost a franchise record 13 straight road games and they are singin' the blues because ...
the water is Muddy!!!
go phillies and team that plays in atlanta!!
That's what I needed to hear!!
OK, the rest of New England will wait and see if the Celtics win, but I am happy enough for tonight.
Celtics tied 25-25, 7 minutes left in the half.
MFY down 4-1 in top 9th
haha - ump's wrong call give phillies a SB!
joba choking.
Go Boston---any and every Boston team!
I hate basketball, but what the hell...GO GREEN!
Phillies have scored 4 in the 9th, 3 off JTC. HA!
Could this be 2 straight nights that the Sox win and NY and TB both lose?
Over at the toilet. MFY lose.
Gotta love it
Two games back. Take a minute and let that sink in a little.
May 17th, the Red Sox had a -9 run differential. They were in fourth place, 8.5 GB.
June 17th, the Red Sox have a +58 run differential and are in 3rd, 2 GB.
From -9 to +58 in a MONTH!
And as of today, the Red Sox have scored the most runs in baseball. 373 to New York's 367.
Browsing JoS from the 2010 World Cup!
I apologize if this comment has come through 3 times, I will delete it if it has...having internets difficulties here.
ACK!!!
The bees!!
And we have an Ace in waiting.....
i was out and couldn't keep up with the game or thread very well. I was able to get score updates from my phone.
Good to come back and read the thread. So Lackey wasn't good again? Too bad. It looks like this is what we've got from him.
Very sweet to be 2 back.
I'll be at Wrigley tomorrow afternoon. I get to see Kazmir/Carlos Silva matchup.
Don't know if anyone will see this, but Red Sox now have the third best record in all of baseball (and the third best record in the AL East).
Lacky gets lucky again.
A guy at the job said yesterday afternoon "toobad you're Sox gt such a horrible start, the're doing all right now but it's probably too late"
????
I just stared blankly and said "Yeah" at first.
Then I asked if he had looked at the standings lately, and proceeded to relate that the Sox were tied (at that time) for wins with the top NL teams, and had more wins than any AL team except the Skankees and Evil Rays. AND that they were only 2 behind those 2. And that 2 back with, ohhh, almost 100 to go was not really insurmountable. It's more like a dead heat.
It was his turn to to stare blankly.
Braves fans - yeesh!
I noticed there were < 100 comments on last night's game thread, so decided to scroll through. I learned Amy might have become a grandmother but didn't, Tim has been warned about the dryer, and Allan got drunk last night. That's what happens when I'm 2 hours away crying with war resisters. Go figure.
Very entertaining thread.
