G22: Red Sox 7, Angels 6

Angels - 003 200 010 - 6 11 0
Red Sox - 100 131 01x - 7 16 1
Ellsbury gave the Sox a 1-0 lead with a home run to start the first. After Pauley retired the first six Angels, his slider stopped sliding, his pitches stayed up and the Angels battered him for three runs in the third and two more in the fourth.

Down 5-1, Boston began its comeback in the fourth, as Lugo doubled home Drew. Pedroia doubled to start the fifth, and he scored on Manny's single. Then Youkilis bopped a dong to left and the game was tied at 5-5. Ellsbury smacked his second home run of the night with two outs in the sixth, putting the Red Sox back on top.

Okajima worked out of a two-on, no-out Tavarez mess in the seventh, but surrendered a solo home run to Kotchman leading off the eighth. Jeemer got the next two outs on only three pitches, but gave up a double to Aybar (his third of the game). Timlin came in -- gulp! -- and got Figgins on a grounder to short.

With one out in eighth, Ellsbury beat out a drag bunt to first. Shields came in and was quite focused on Lyndon, making three throws to first while falling behind Pedroia 2-1. FY ripped a line drive past third, down the line and into the corner. Ellsbury scored standing up, Pedroia had his third double of the night, and Boston led 7-6.

Papelbon pitched a no-nonsense ninth. He threw 11 pitches and all but one of them was 98 or 99; the other one was 100. He fanned Matthews on three pitches, got Vlad on a check-swing strike three and forced Anderson to pop to Manny in left.

Sixth straight win -- 15-7 record -- 110-win pace. Good times!

Jered Weaver (3.60, 117 ERA+) / David Pauley (2006 Sox: 16 IP, 7.88, 60 ERA+)

UPDATE from Amalie Benjamin, Globe:
Josh Beckett [5.12, 86 ERA+] has been pulled from tonight's start because of a stiff neck. David Pauley will start in his place. Joe Thurston was designated for assignment to make room for Pauley on the roster.
Jeff Horrigan, Herald:
Jason Varitek was so ill this weekend that he was unable to drive himself to the ballpark Sunday.

Kevin Cash, who caught Tim Wakefield in Sunday's victory, played again yesterday. Red Sox manager Terry Francona indicated Varitek may need another day off tonight against the Angels.

And Josh Beckett was forced to head home prior to Sunday's game against Texas after becoming ill.
Manny Ramirez was named AL Co-Player of the Week for April 14-20. He hit .417 (10-for-24) with four homers and eight RBI in seven games. He shared the honor with Miguel Cabrera of the Tigers. It's the 10th time Manny has won the award as a Sock, and the 16th time in his career, the most of any player in history.

Inane question of the day, "Can the Sox do tonight what they could not do last year, win six in a row?"

redsock said...

I know you mean the regular season, but they did end the season with 7 straight wins.

Beckett is out because of a stiff neck and not the flu?

redsock said...

Updated Amalie:

Pauley was pulled from his start yesterday, spent last night in a Boston hotel. At 2 PM, Pauley was told that he wouldn't be needed tonight -- that was reversed around 4 PM.

Neck issue came out of nowhere this afternoon.

Varitek is sick. Two emergency catchers -- Cora, Lowell -- are both on the disabled list, so Dustin Pedroia has offered to go behind the plate, if necessary.

FY!

redsock said...

Note: Benjamin did not type "FY".

Amy said...

Wow, these guys are dropping like flies---Schilling, Lowell, Cora, and now Beckett, Tek, and isn't Crisp hurting also? And then there's Remy as well.

Imagine how many games we would be winning WITH these guys---can't do much better than they already are.

Who is David Pauley? What do you know about him?

ish said...

Go back into your Common Sense encyclopedias and think - how long can the flu last? and, Can the flu cause a stiff neck?

For those reasons, it sucks he's not pitching tonight, but I'm not worried about long-term Josh Beckett.

s1c said...

Redsock said: ...with 7 straight wins.

Ooops! Yes I did mean the regular season, so after tonights win and tomorrow nights win the question will be can they win 8 straight!!!

Positive thinking, positive thinking!!!

redsock said...

Hey, Tito: Start FY behind the plate to get Cash's "bat" out of the lineup. Have Cash be the emergency catcher.

Not that I don't trust Dustin and his Napoleonic Nads, but I'm praying we don't see him waiting on a relay throw as Vlady or Gary Matthews Jr. are barrel-assing down the 3rd base line with a head of steam.

Personally I'm more concerned about Beckett's backup than Cash's. (Stiff neck + flu better not equal meningitis.)

Too bad about Zora, too. I assume he'll pass through waivers in April with zero major league hits to his name.

Zenslinger said...

Stiff neck?

PRIDE GOETH BEFORE THE FALL!

Heh, just kidding. We're tied for the second best record (the tie is in terms of W/L standings, not winning percentage) in the MLB, undisputed best in the AL. Despite playing a lot at home, no one can call our schedule easy.

If we can take two of three from the Angels, it would very impressive. Don't know what Pauley's been doing lately at AAA or what the other options would have been, but, let's hope he can keep us in the game.

And Josh can't be too badly off. Stiff neck. Hunh.

Zenslinger said...

Too bad about Zora, too. I assume he'll pass through waivers in April with zero major league hits to his name.

Zora? Waivers?

I don't get it.

s1c said...

If Pauley can duplicate his start from 2 years ago in NY I will be happy (that was the game that Milk dud robbed MBM).

NESN - 1.17 ERA for Pauley this year.

Sarah Gates said...

Small mammal with wings, right? Popular around Halloween?

Jack Marshall said...

Does everybody really think that Lowrie is going to be sent down? I've seen all I need to: he's versatile enough to play a lot as a reserve, and unlike Cora, a useful hitter coming off the bench. He makes the team better...so keep him! A no-brainer, if you ask me.

s1c said...

NESN saying TEK and MDC sent home, both having the flu.

Zenslinger said...

he's versatile enough to play a lot as a reserve

Conventional wisdom says that someone his age needs to play every day to continue to develop.

phrenile said...

zenslinger: one of the tragedies of the end of the Thurston era is that we never managed to pick a nickname for him. My bid was "Zora [Neale THurston]".

s1c said...

Jack - Jedi will be sent down just like LBJ was sent down last year. Theo's and Tito's philosophy is that it is better for them to play everyday instead of sitting on the bench.

s1c said...

And is that the first Sarah Gates sighting that I see?

Zenslinger said...

zenslinger: one of the tragedies of the end of the Thurston era is that we never managed to pick a nickname for him. My bid was "Zora [Neale THurston]".

Oh -- cool. I teach Their Eyes Were Watching God.

But he doesn't have to go through waivers, does he?

Sarah Gates said...

Hey s1c! I dropped in a bit yesterday as well, I've been having some trouble getting my tv, my computer and my self in the same room this season. Laptop's DTD.

s1c said...

In the why did we trade 2 players for him category:

Gagme blew his 4th save!!!

WSJ with the game winner in the 12th!!!

Sarah Gates said...

Assuming we see Thurston again, I'm totally behind Zora. I'll take the smart nickname over the obvious any day of the week. (And twice on Sunday.)

Sarah Gates said...

I dig the recycling patch!

s1c said...

Ah the wonders of the internet, since I wasn' sure what the lovely ms. gates meant when she said DTD, I am assuming you meant the Day to Day and not one of the other ones like diastrophic dysplasia.

Amy said...

Gee, another game with Cash catching. Poo. Poor Tek.

nixon33 said...

i bought my 3 year old nephew and his dad (my bro) tix for tonights game! it's his first sox game!

Sarah Gates said...

hahaha! I don't even know what that IS, but it sounds awful enough for my laptop... Yeah, I meant day to day.

Amy said...

That's cool, Nixon. I assume first game for the nephew, not your brother :)

Amy said...

I have no memory of this Pauley character. Sometimes the holes in my memory are downright scary. Am I supposed to remember him from 06? Was he any good? Where was he in 07?

nixon33 said...

ha, amy yes for my nephew.
my bro took me to the playoff game last year vs. the indians at fenway where schill pitched and nixon knocked in the go ahead runs late in the game vs who other than gagne.

Sarah Gates said...

Aww, Nixon33, that's awesome. What a good uncle you are.

nixon33 said...

thanks sarah, but im not that good of an uncle, they are upper bleacher tix!
HA!

Amy said...

Nice brothers also, getting each other tickets to Fenway!

nixon33 said...

amy, paulie pitched a hell of a game vs. the yakns last year, i believe.

Amy said...

WHOAAA! LYNDON!

Sarah Gates said...

Brilliant! I love you Lyndon.

s1c said...

Amy he pitched in Pawtucket last year.

In '06 he started three games. His start in NY (on 6/6 )was the only good one as he went 6 2/3 an only allowed 2 runs.

LBJ!!!

Amy said...

Where is Laura??

Nixon, he pitched for the team last year? I can't believe I have no memory of his name, let alone any of his pitching.

phrenile said...

Pauley's 2006 stats. Not too inspiring, although holding the MFYs to 2 runs over 6.2 innings was respectable.

Zenslinger said...

THIS LBJ would have run in '68!

D-d-d-DONG!

On my fantasy team, too.

Amy said...

You guys are amazing that you remember these details. I don't even think this is age related. I just don't remember that level of detail unless it is a historic game.

WOW! Two up, two extra base hits!

redsock said...

just finished interviewing a new dog walker. we're back tho!!

Sarah Gates said...

Hey, none of MY uncles give me tickets at all. Though my sister's boyfriend is turning out to be quite useful in the sox tix department, when my brother was up the Thursday after the home opener to look at Harvard, Brian totally hooked him up with tickets to that night's game.

s1c said...

FY what were you thinking?

Amy said...

How did the interview go? Did you ever find out what happened to your former pet sitter?

L-girl said...

Hi all, just got done meeting with our new dogwalker... I hear my boy showed his dong!

Amy said...

So far Jered is reminding me a lot of Jeff.

Sarah Gates said...

Yeah, zen, he's on mine as well. He, ROY and Youk (who's newfound 3B eligibility is terrific).

L-girl said...

Amy, we found someone great, and a good backup person too. Huge relief.

No word from D - nothing. We're changing the front door lock. :<(

Amy said...

That's great, Laura and Allan. Nothing like peace of mind.

Amy said...

I think he gets his pot from Jeff.

Sarah Gates said...

Amy said...

Too bad Pedroia got himself tagged out. That could have been a run.

redsock said...

can't ask for better news that that!

L-girl said...

Depending on how you pronounce Pauley - what kind of accent you have - he could go on my girls' team.

L-girl said...

What's the story behind the recycling patch? I like it.

Amy said...

Yes, I always loved when Jeff pitched for the Yankees. Harvey would just cover his eyes.

Amy said...

Where is this recycling patch?

Amy said...

Oh, well, at least we got one run out of that. And hopefully shook up Weaver.

Sarah Gates said...

It's an Earth Day observance - shoulder patch. I want one.

Zenslinger said...

And hopefully shook up Weaver.

For one thing, he had to throw 30 pitches.

L-girl said...

Oh Earth Day, of course. Duh. It's great, I want one too.

Yes, I always loved when Jeff pitched for the Yankees. Harvey would just cover his eyes.

Indeed. They gave up Ted Lilly too (girls team again), who I liked.

Amy said...

Ahhh, I see it! I thought it was on the page somewhere. Dumb me.

Pauley is off to the good start and I think it is pronounced Paul not Poll

redsock said...

josh who?

L-girl said...

Many people would pronounce Pauley, Pawley and Polly the same way. Depends where you're from.

New Englanders pronounce the woman's name Dawn and the man's name Don nearly the same way (to my ears).

L-girl said...

So did everyone read our Redsock's words of wisdom in today's Herald?

phrenile said...

Pauley versus Beckett.

The fun thing about having one data point is you can draw your line in any direction you want.

Sarah Gates said...

Yeah, but with the right accent, Pauley could certainly make the girls team.

Oh, and of course you can buy the jerseys with the earth day patch.

s1c said...

L-girl, I agree about the dawn / don etc. Was just saying that it sounds like dawn o is saying paul as opposed to poll, to me any way.

Amy said...

Allan was quoted in the Herald? I haven't had time today to read much on the blogs or elsewhere, so will have to look during the game.

L-girl said...

We need more pitchers on the girls team, so let's just get the right person to announce him when he pitches.

redsock said...

amy - link is in the post under this one.

Amy said...

New Englanders could very easily pronounce Pauley as Polly, or very close.

Or pronounce Polly as Paulie.

Lugo!!

s1c said...

L-girl said...

I'll put him on my list.

I actually have a list. I got tired of re-creating it all the time and wrote it down.

L-girl said...

Finally saw LBJ's HR on a replay. Yay.

Amy said...

Nice quote! But now I need to read your original post, which I started the other day, but didn't get to finish (that was the one I meant I needed a longer break for, not the one right below this one).

Congrats! Did she call you or the quote or did she take it from the blog?

s1c said...

Crap, there goes the no hitter.

redsock said...

actually she emailed me during the 7th inning during yesterday's game. ... i had not heard about the news about the affidavit so her emailed freaked me out! i found the sportsing news story right after that.

i spoke to her for a while after the game yesterday, but she didn't use much of what we talked about. she could have used another 2000 words!

today, i taped an interview with someone at wbz/cbs radio that may air tomorrow morning.

i'm talking with the museum curator tomorrow and hope to find out a bit more about the docs they have.

s1c said...

c'mon kid, get that sinker down in the zone.

Joe Grav said...

uh oh. Pauley remembered that he's Pauley.

Amy said...

Seems I went to read Allan's other post, and Pauley went to shit. Better stay here.

Amy said...

That's great, Allan. Seems like you may need a update for the next edition of the book!

L-girl said...

Most off-topic comment ever:

Amy said...

Oh, shit.

Don is definitely saying it more like Polly than Paulie. At least the way I saw Pol v Paul.

Amy said...

I think you sent me that cute puppy. It is a very very cute puppy!

Bases loaded, finally one out.
Finally.

Amy said...

Guerrero is always a scary one to see at bat with the bases loaded.

L-girl said...

Sarah, did you notice if you can buy the patch without the shirt?

L-girl said...

I think you sent me that cute puppy.

Oh no, I am out of control.

redsock said...

i hate mrs. garret.

Amy said...

Shit, shit. What happened to our pitcher?

Amy said...

One can never get too many pictures of cute puppies. Or dogs. Or cats. At least I can't.

s1c said...

Cute puppy. Not something will be seeing in the s1c house. BH stated quite firmly no other dog after Gambit.

L-girl said...

Manny with the leather!

Amy said...

Manny making my heart skip a beat there.

Let's get back those runs now.

L-girl said...

We'll never have a puppy, since we are committed to rescues, but when it comes to getting another dog, never say never.

Sarah Gates said...

Wow - no joke Laura. Very possibly the cutest baby animal ever.

Say, while we're absurdly off topic, what does Coke use to sweeten Coca-cola in Canada? Is it the evil HFCS like in the US, or actual sugar like in Mexico (and, as far as I can tell, the rest of the freakin' world?) I bring this up because I'm enjoying some wonderful Passover Coke, with none of that nasty #2 corn.

redsock said...

I do not approve of the Red Sox's recycling policy.

Dump Timlin!

L-girl said...

I wonder where Ish is tonight? No hockey, so...

Amy said...

We saw the cutest little 13 week old puppy while walking Cassie today---Golden Retriever. Cassie got VERY excited. The puppy was not as excited to see her.

s1c said...

The ORTIZ jersey is now up to $72,000.

I am all for getting another dog, but BH says no way, no how, and its either the dog or me.

L-girl said...

Sarah, I assume it's the disgusting HFCS, because I believe Coke made that change worldwide. Also, if it's US and Mexico, changes are it's Canada b/d of Nafta.

But I don't drink soda (pop, here) at all, and never drank coke, so I don't know for sure. But it's safe to assume it's HFCS.

Amy said...

Sarah, it's funny you mention that. My daughter today was very impressed to find KFP Diet Coke, though of course Diet Coke never has corn syrup.

redsock said...

s1c: but as don said (a bit excitedly) "shipping is free"!!!

Joe Grav said...

Good to see Manny back out there. How about a dong?

Amy said...

HFCS=high fructose corn syrup?

(Trying to redeem myself after the EVOO thing)

s1c said...

this is starting to look like Saturday's game. Opposing pitcher on the rope in the first inning and then looking like cy freaking young.

L-girl said...

changes are it's Canada b/d of Nafta

translation: chances are it's in Canada b/c of Nafta

Sarah Gates said...

Good one, Allan!

L-girl said...

amy, that's the one :)

if you read Michael Pollan, you recognize it as evil

L-girl said...

I had to think about what KFP meant. Took a few secs.

s1c said...

For $72,000 the shipping better be free.

Listened to the guy who's running the auction site for the Sox Charity. He had to be very specific about the web page because there are numerous knock off sites.

MBM hanging tough!!!

Amy said...

Haven't read Pollan's book yet. Is it evil because it is bad for you or because it's a misuse of corn or some other reason?

L-girl said...

Damn. Now Mr Weaver, please return to your Weaverness.

Sarah Gates said...

No worries, I totally got the NAFTA line the first time. The last time I was in Mexico (two years-ish) it was actually cane sugar there, and I am given to believe that HFCS (got it in one, Amy) is not the worldwide standard, just the US one. KFP uses sucrose from sugar beets and it is MUCH better than the damn corn.

L-girl said...

Amy, not just his book(s), many of his articles and essays, too. It's the corn industry, and how industrial food production is all about supporting it, and how it has changed the food web completely, all for the worse.

L-girl said...

The winner of some contest is named Lyndon Braun. Lyndon B!

L-girl said...

Sarah, that's good news. I will find out about Canada.

Amy said...

It's interesting --- I have had an easier time finding products without corn syrup this week, for example, yogurt---in the past, most fruit yogurts had corn syrup, but this year I am finding the sugar beet juice. I doubt it is because of Passover, so there must be some other pressure to move away from HFCS.

Amy said...

redsock said...

...

i may have to sign cody up for kid nation -- she's about 11 -- i think i need a FY lunch box.

s1c said...

Ugh, this call up hasn't worked out.

Lots of reasons for the Corn fructose, one though is the sugar cane industry keeping out the sugar cane from other countries.

Sarah Gates said...

I want a ROY lunch box!

And yeah, Amy, check him out, he's great.

L-girl said...

OK, Amy, here's what I found. Mixed results. In one discussion, I saw this: (no link, but who cares)

I've heard that Coca-Cola sold in Canada, like that sold in Europe, is sweetened with actual sugar, not high-fructose corn syrup as it is in the US. Can anyone confirm this? I'm 100 miles from the border, which is close enough for a soda run. :-)

As far as I know, (as a Canadian cokaholic) only when they make special products that are Kosher for Passover. Because eating corn or corn products is forbidden to Jews during passover. That's when I seek out a Jewish neighborhoud and stock up on the good stuff. It DOES taste better. The flavour is smoother, more subtle. You could do the same in the USA. I believe the labeling in the USA is stricter and "corn syrup" is listed - in Canada they can say "glucose-fructose" without giving the source.

Then I found this. If you search for the word Canada, someone says Coke is sweetened w/ sugar here. Someone else says it is in Mexico and Australia, too.

redsock said...

i miss the good old days when there was actually cocaine in coke.

L-girl said...

The corn industry has extremely powerful government supports, it has created an unbeleivably huge surplus of product which is not edible to humans, and it has engineered new ways to have those products used. One is feeding corn to cows, who cannot digest corn (they are meant to eat grass) so they get sick, so they need antibiotics... and they are fed corn in feed lots, which brings e coli into the food system...

It has very little to do with the sugar industry.

L-girl said...

i miss the good old days when there was actually cocaine in coke.

Don't we all.

L-girl said...

Amy, I haven't read his most recent book, In Defense of Food, but his previous book, Omnivore's Dilemma, is tremendous. His website is also a good place to start, if you have the patience to read online. (Which can be difficult.)

L-girl said...

I honestly can't believe people drink Coke. I can't imagine wanting to drink so much sugar and chemicals. But apparently I am odd that way.

Amy said...

Very interesting stuff. So maybe some of the other companies like Stonyfield Yogurt are moving away from the corn syrup for all those reasons.

BTW, it is very hard to find Coke around here that is marked KFP. Not enough of a Passover-observing population, unlike NYC or even Boston. (I just read ingredients to avoid the corn products). But maybe it's also because there are people hording the stuff because of taste!

L-girl said...

Oh great, my last four comments are not even remotely about the game. I will stop that now.

Amy said...

I drank a LOT of Diet Coke until a year ago, when I took all soda and caffeinated products out of my diet for health reasons.

L-girl said...

Ka-ching!

L-girl said...

I'm a caffeine addict. I've given it up several times, but can't quit altogether.

s1c said...

Actually the sugar industry has a huge impact (US pays 3 times world prices, which is why the corn fructose is used) as this Wall Street Journal article
shows. Found this via Keith Laws blog.

L-girl said...

So maybe some of the other companies like Stonyfield Yogurt are moving away from the corn syrup for all those reasons.

It could certainly be that. Many people are avoiding products w/ HFCS, so companies whose customers are health-conscious probably want to cater to that.

Amy said...

The good news about being forced to get off the stuff is that you do get used to living without it. I don't miss it at all now.

On the other hand, I REALLY miss chocolate.

L-girl said...

s1c, I'll disagree on that one. :)

Sarah Gates said...

Yeah, soda is such a completely worthless source of empty calories, but it may as well still have cocaine in it. I have trouble kicking it entirely, I just try to reduce my consumption and make sure I'm drinking it to enjoy it, rather than just as somthing to drink, you know?

Oh! Hey look! A baseball game!

L-girl said...

s1c said...

L-girl said...

Amy, I quit caffeine many times, twice for an extended period, and I never stopped missing it. The physical symptoms (which were very intense) did go away, but I never stopped wanting it. Every. Single. Day.

I finally just figured, if this is my worst addiction, well, whatever.

L-girl said...

I just try to reduce my consumption and make sure I'm drinking it to enjoy it, rather than just as somthing to drink, you know?

Totally. I think that's the key to a lot of things we enjoy that are not really good for us.

I'm lucky, I guess. I prefer drinking water to any oher non-alcoholic beverage.

Patrick said...

Hey guys.

9casey said...

Caffeine...Good......I have suffered from migraines in the past and the only thing I can actually attribute it to is lack of caffeine....very convienent of me, right.....

s1c said...

Patrick said...

I'm listening to the LAA anouncers today for a chance of pace.

Patrick said...

I think a lot of people like bananas with pb

Amy said...

Interesting, S1C, though not surprising that the sugar and corn growers exert that kind of power over trade matters. What's to disagree with there, Laura?

I guess I am lucky---caffeine never had much of a hold on me, and so I don't miss it at all. It always just made me way too jumpy.

Is there a baseball game somewhere?

L-girl said...

Bananas and PB are great together! I don't do that, only b/c I enjoy my daily banana on its own so much. But they do go together.

In fact peanut butter with anything except bananas! My father eats peanut butter with cheese. Also, with butter. I prefer it either alone or with grape jelly, just like in grade school.

I can't live w/o bananas or PB. Barely ripe bananas, all yellow w/ a touch of green on each end. And crunchy all-peanut PB w/ nothing else in it. No sugar, no salt, no nothin.

Patrick, you quickly succumbed to the food talk! What's the problem with fruit and other foods? What does that mean for thing like blueberry muffins, apple pie, raisin bran, yogurt with fruit, etc?

Patrick, I have read that eating protein with fruits is very good for you. I think of PB and apple as an extremely healthy snack. (And delicious, as Sarah says.)

From my understanding the typical healthy American breakfast, oatmeal with bananas or muffins with fruit, is not that healthy. The only reason being they don't digest very easily.

Apple + PB = awesome

I like Peanut Butter and I like Bananas just not together. Actually the best Peanut butter take 3 tablespoons of PB, 1 tablespoon of Maple syrup, Mix and slather on a slice of bread, mmmm!!!

Papi says "shift this!"

I don't know if it's true, though I believe it, and I'm just putting it out there.

Papi is so out of his slump!!!

Its time for MBM to be well, a bad man!!!

Hmm... starting it early today, I think.

Gotta love Papi. That's like 3 hits through the shift in the last 2 days, awesome.

I think the typical American breakfast does not include fruit, muffins, oatmeal or any other healthy food.

I'm highly skeptical of this fruit theory.

Tie it up.

s1c's PB and maple syrup sounds delish. I've never had that, maybe next time we're in Vermont. People are always pushing maple syrup on us there, we never know what to do with it.
