G55: Mariners 4, Red Sox 3

Red Sox - 000 003 000 - 3 7 1
Mariners - 201 000 001 - 4 8 1
Once again, the Red Sox rely on Timlin in a tie game in the ninth inning when Papelbon is presumably available. And once again, that decision ends in a quick loss.

Brad Mills was calling the shots, after Terry Francona was ejected (along with Lugo) in the fifth inning, shortly after Matsuzaka left with a possible hip injury. In the ninth, Balentien reached on an infield single that Cora could not field in the hole. Balentien moved to second on Cairo's bunt and took third on Reed's grounder to second. After Ichiro was walked intentionally, Lopez lined a game-winning single past Lowell at third down the left field line.

... Timlin -- never a good decision.

(Although, honestly, Old Yeller did alright, all things considered. If Cora makes the play in the hole, everything might have been fine and the game might have gone to the 10th.)

Dice allowed three early runs before Manny tied the game with his 499th career dong.

***

Daisuke Matsuzaka (2.40, 180 ERA+) / Miguel Batista (6.47, 61 ERA+)

Clay Buchholz could come off the disabled list on Wednesday, but he'll make at least one more start for Pawtucket -- Friday against Durham.

Jon Lester was named the AL Player of the Week. (His father has been diagnosed with lymphoma.) ... Julian Tavarez has signed with the Brewers.

The Washington Post today has an astounding article, which, if true, shows the Yankees brain trust have lost their minds. It says that the Yankees see Joba Chamberlain filling the role of "a Beckett" in this year's rotation, making their rotation a play-off threat. Talk about unfair expectations! Clemens took three years to become dominating; Ryan took longer. Projecting a rookie into the staff ace is ridiculous. It's happened, yes. But it's never LIKELY to happen. Poor Joba. Set up to fail.

Sarah Haendler said...

Wow. Never thought I'd feel sorry for a Hutt... Pretty dumb at the toilet these days.

Zenslinger said...

Projecting a rookie into the staff ace is ridiculous.

Yes -- we can see how well putting unreasonable pressure on young pitchers who have shown promise has worked out for the Yanks this year.

In completely and utterly unrelated news, Ian Kennedy's given up four runs in the bottom of the 2nd to erase the four-run lead the Yanks built on a couple of HRs (including a 3-run HR from Damon).

Well, that's not completely true; a passed ball and an A-Rod throwing error helped with the fourth run. The first three came on Millar and Hernandez HRs.

The Globe says the lineups are thus:

Crisp, CF
Pedroia, 2B
Ortiz, DH
Ramirez, LF
Lowell, 3B
Drew, RF
Varitek, C
Casey, 1B
Lugo, SS

Suzuki, CF
Lopez, 2B
Vidro, DH
Ibanez, LF
Beltre, 3B
Johjima, C
Balentien, RF
Cairo, 1B
Betancourt, SS

Maybe they mean JtC will be a "2006 Beckett". That's well withn the realm of possibility.

If the guy can be an effective starter, he should start. Otherwise, he's being wasted in the pen.

Whether he can sustain his pitches over 6-7 innings is a whole other matter.

allan said...

Dear Sox Bats: Pound the poet.

Your humble servant, JoS

Jere said...

two outs nobody on and the Yanks get a single and a double, 5-4 them, top 4.

Jere said...

And now a fuckin dong, 7-4.

Zenslinger said...

Ugh, Abreu HR, 7-4 Yanks.

In other news, our divisional rivals are down 7-2 to Texas.

Heh heh.

Ugh, Abreu HR, 7-4 Yanks.

Looks like they have a decent shot at stepping slightly outside the basement for a day.

Jere said...

well they blew the last 4 run lead, let's see if they can blow this one, as it's now 8-4.

Zenslinger said...

A-Rod error #2.

Ohlendorf comes in for IPK -- why not our stretching out Joba (or, he's probably known to Yank fanks by the telling initials J.C. -- "He's the Savior!")

Rob said...

I'm watching the ESPN game tonight. Dodgers at Cubs. Hiroki Kuroda has really turned out to be a good signing for Los Angeles. 1-0 Dodgers.

Kuroda this season: 2-3, 62 IP, 3.48 ERA, 125 ERA+, 1.27 WHIP, 18 BB, 34 K

TEX - 250 0

Only two of the Texas runs are earned, though.

Two-run jackson for Mora.

Jere said...

8-6 now, as Mora dongs

Jere said...

8-7!!!

Zenslinger said...

Yanks lead only 8-7 now. A real day for HRs there in Camden, eh.

Rob said...

On the Yankees Radio Network driven by Jeep, they think Joba can.... HOME RUN Luke Scott!!! 8-7!

They think he can throw 65 pitches... in 5 innings. Perhaps, but do you really expect him to start his first ever game in the majors and...

TIE GAME!!! Buckethead!!!

...throw 65 pitches in five innings?

Jere said...

EIGHT dongs in this game and they're only in the fifth.

Jere said...

8-8 on a Millar DONG!!! The ninth of the game

Rob said...

So... safe to say Camden Yards lets the dongs outside. For sure.

Jere said...

Two four-run leads completely blown in four innings. I love the '08 Yanks!!!

Rob said...

Watching Kuroda vs. Fukudome. Interesting matchup.

Benjamin said...

What's the over/under on Hughes and Kennedy ever getting a win this year?

Rob said...

John Sterling, earlier... "There have been eight home runs in this game!"

Just now: "I have been corrected... (in the background) 1, 2, 3, 4, 5.... The Orioles have had 5 home runs... there have been NINE home runs in this game."

He actually seemed a little excited when the O's went back to back.

Rob said...

Long AB for Fukudome. 4.3 pitches per AB that leads the NL for Fukudome. And he walks.

Patrick said...

Yankees radio announcers mentioning perhaps a trip to the DL for Kennedy.

Might that mean....more IGAWA?

Rob said...

Record for home runs in a game: 12.

Zenslinger said...

That dong-a-thon is crackin' me up.

Yeah, Lou Merloni.

Jere said...

Yeah they're easing him in by having Macha hold his hand I guess.

"If the guy can be an effective starter, he should start. Otherwise, he's being wasted in the pen."

Redsock, would you apply this to Papelbon as well? I don't disagree with you at all, by the way: recall I was the one bellyaching about not shifting Pap to starter in'06 when the rotation was falling apart.
But I'd think Joba and Pap are pretty good equivilents, no? Or do you feel Pap is an exception?

allan said...

There are a few differences. Right now, JtC is an 8th inning guy, Bot was the closer. Also, Bot's shoulder was an issue, no?

There were questions whether Bot had the 3rd pitch to compete as a starter. Not clear whether Joba has the pitches, though I do remember reading something about how much he'd have to dial down his velocity if starting.

I'm also trying to remember how I felt about Bot in the rotation. L says I was not opposed to it (she was, though).

Patrick said...

This is an interesting line in the Cleveland/Chicago games:
-D. Dellucci stole home, G. Sizemore stole third, J. Carroll stole second

Anyone know how this happened?

Jere said...

If my calx are cx, Millar's OPS tonight is 3.250

the ol' triple steal

Instant classic today in Wisconsin.

D3 National Championship game - Johns Hopkins vs. Trinity

Hopkins takes the lead in the top of the 9th, 4-3.

Bottom 9, 1 out - Longmeadow, MA's Kent Graham singles to get the rally started.

Next guy singles to put runners on first and third. The runner on first steals 2nd, putting runners on 2nd + 3rd with 1 out. They intentionally walk the next guy, then strike out the following hitter.

With the bases loaded & 2 out, Trinity got 2 consecutive walks to win it 5-4. The last at-bat was a Yook-esque 11 pitch struggle.

Awesome game.

Rob said...

How set in stone is this voting process for the all-star game? If there are 5 Red Sox players who are voted in as starters, does that mean they will start? Or does MLB do anything to prevent 5 from one team from starting?

Amy said...

DiceK--no walks. Please.

Patrick said...

At least you're here, Amy. I've been having to use earmuffs to protect my sheltered self from these animals where there are no ladies around to keep us in check...

laura k said...

I very rarely get colds. So I guess I'm entitled to complain a bit.

Did someone say Amalie Benjamin? Amalie is dreamy! <3

Unfortunate for her when she has to sit next to Heidi Watney, though.

laura k said...

I won't tell him. :)

I also scrolled through the woman-less thread. Heidi this, Heidi that, blah blah blah.

Joe Grav said...

Bah. crap

Benjamin said...

Fucking Sox.

Reds designated Scott Hatteberg for assignment today...

laura k said...

But of course not next to HEIDI...

Patrick said...

Did you say Heidi, L-Girl? Heidi is dreamy! <3

I also scrolled through the woman-less thread. Heidi this, Heidi that, blah blah blah.

FUCK.

Rob said...

That was much more offensive than the Heidi stuff.

Wait, you found that offensive?

laura k said...

Damn, no Ococ magic that time.

Although we did get a "full bore" sighting out of it.

New euphemism: useful information. Intriguing reports. Wow, her reports are so intriguing...
