G54: Red Sox 6, Athletics 4

Athletics - 300 000 001 - 4 12 0
Red Sox - 200 020 11x - 6 10 0
After a questionable out call at first base to begin the game, Matsuzaka gave up a double, another double, and a home run. After only 12 pitches, Boston trailed 3-0.

But then -- just like the old saw about Tim Wakefield getting it back as quickly as he lost it -- Dice settled down. He scattered a handful of singles over the next 5+ innings and the Red Sox bats took the lead.

In the bottom of the first, Marco Scutaro singled and David Ortiz doubled off the Wall. Kevin Youkilis singled them both in and it was 3-2. Darnell McDonald opened the fifth with a double and Ortiz smoked a two-out dong to right. Boston led 4-3.

With two outs in the seventh, Dice hit a batter and allowed a single, but Daniel Bard got out of the 1st/3rd jam by striking out Kurt Suzuki. Bard then pitched a 1-2-3 eighth. In the meantime, Scutaro and Dustin Pedroia hit back-to-back doubles (FY's 1st RBI in more than two weeks) in the seventh and Scuatro blooped an RBI single into left center in the eighth.

Jonathan Papelbon gave up a solo home run in the ninth, but got the save.

In addition to his double and dong, Flo walked twice. Scutaro had three hits. McDonald had two hits and a walk. J.D. Drew tripled to start the sixth, but watched in dismay as the next three hitters all popped out.

In Toronto, the Blue Jays shit the chambre for the second night in a row, blowing a 2-1 lead in the ninth inning and losing to the Rays 7-3. The worthless Jays dropped behind the Red Sox with the loss. The Yankees beat the Orioles 9-1.

Victor is sitting because he'll have to catch Wakefield in the day game tomorrow. So it's Cactus Time tonight. Martinez last caught Dice on May 17 at Stade Fasciste.

Charlie Watts turns 69 today!

Watts said "he has had a compulsive habit for decades of actually sketching every new hotel room he occupies – and its furnishings – immediately upon entering it. He stated he keeps every sketch, but still doesn't know why he feels the compulsion to do this."

What to do, what to do. Watch DiceK and get aggravated, endanger my health, and go to bed mad or be hopeful, stupid, and brave and watch the game?

Perhaps tuning in late will be the compromised approach. And tuning out early, if need be.

allan said...

Watch DiceK and get aggravated, endanger my health, and go to bed mad or be hopeful, stupid, and brave and watch the game?

Isn't watching the game both choices here? ??

David Ortiz and Jon Lester have been named American League Player and Pitcher of the Month, respectively, for May!

Zenslinger said...

ARI-LAD scoreless in the bottom of the 12th.

Amy said...

Oh, Allan, you are just so logical... Yes, the choice is whether to watch or not. I will go get ice cream, come back and see what is happening, and THEN decide.

GO SOX!

allan said...

Your Q boils down to:

"Watch DiceK ... or ... watch the game?"

SoSock said...

Amy would be glad to know the 1st pitch was a called strike

allan said...

fack - stuck with the oakland guys. who are going on and on and on and on about how slow dice works.

may need mute.

allan said...

ah - now they can imitate the rays b'casters and whine for 5 innings.

Kathryn said...

NESN for me!

Kathryn said...

BTW: Catch the ball!

allan said...

is hermida is a trance? wtf?

maybe i should put on some music ,...

SoSock said...

Perhaps a little of that trademark wildness would be in order here

Zenslinger said...

Are there any workarounds to get games on the Web? I'm fasting/abstaining and can't go to the Bar now. And I found getting MLBtv wasn't worth it for me.

allan said...

pitching to contact -- not working out so well.

Kathryn said...

Dice and Lackey are in the same boat for me!

Sucky.

SoSock said...

Jeez, 4 batters - 3 extra base hits.

What are we going to listen to allan?

Dr. Jeff said...

3 runs in 1 out. So that should be 9 runs an inning, if we extrapolate. Thanks for mentioning that ridiculous "Lackey vs. A's" stat.

Dr. Jeff said...

Granted, one of those runs is unearned, right?

allan said...

and i think the first out was actually safe.

Zenslinger said...

Somehow, I can hear, all the way across the country, in Amy's house: the sound of a television being switched off, and an ice-cream container opening.

SoSock said...

Dr J - GDGD did not show Hermida being charged with an error, so no. All earned. Unless the official scorer has it differently

Amy said...

You are right, Allan. As a lawyer, I am deeply embarrassed that I phrased the question that way! I think, however, that Dice has answered my question for me this inning. I am going to get ice cream now. If the score is any worse when I return, I will drink myself into a deep sleep.

My question should have been: Dare I watch the game or should I spare my health and watch something else instead?

This is a tough crowd.

Dr. Jeff said...

Batters vs. individual pitchers can be useful, but usually those involve less than a dozen at bats, so no one talks about the reliability of small data sets.

Dr. Jeff said...

OK. I thought he should have made the catch.

allan said...

i have read that any set of AB less than 100 is suspect, and most batters will never get that against any pitcher. even getting 50 against one pitcher is tough.

unless it is 12-for-13 or 0-for-20, it probably means poop.

SoSock said...

pfffft

Angry Steve said...

Well, it's time for Beltre's bat and the rest of the offense to dig us out of a hole yet again...

allan said...

hahahaha!

i tried oak tv again. they are whining about pitches to scutaro.

allan said...

a big fat dong would do wonders for me right now

allan said...

close!

SoSock said...

Petey is really struggling. If one can believe GDGD that pitch was batting practice, and he flies to right.
Still love him tho

Zenslinger said...

a big fat dong would do wonders for me right now

I would venture to say that you speak for us all.

allan said...

FY needs to increase his red bull consumption.

allan said...

YOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOK

3-2.

Kathryn said...

YOOOUUUUKKKK!!!

Zenslinger said...

Yeah yeah yeah YOUK.

The Dodgers win it with 2 outs in the bottom of the 14th, 1-0.

Kathryn said...

The problem in that Dice has to go back out there.

allan said...

mrs g:
there is always a flaw in every plan.

allan said...

Music for 2nd inning: Coltrane Jazz.

SoSock said...

Yook!

We may have a footballish score here before it's done

allan said...

amy: why not watch the game AND drink yourself silly?

SoSock said...

I do NOT have the statistical data to back this up, but.....
it seems to me that even in his "good" games Dice tends to start slow and get better as the game goes on

allan said...

maybe, but by the time he gets untracked, he's at 80 pitches!!!

allan said...

i think pennington is 0 for his last 27

allan said...

cat like reflexes, but bad throw.

Kathryn said...

What does it take to get an error this game?

allan said...

davis couldn't have hit that pitch with an oar

SoSock said...

Raining like hell here all of a sudden. Gotta go pick up my son, who rode his scooter to the skating rink.
BRB.
BTW - SCORE SOME RUNS

allan said...

jeez - tek was almost in the dugout when sweeney was throwing the ball back in.

allan said...

outs pls

allan said...

dice likes 'trane.

allan said...

BAL - 000
MFY - 04

FKR - 00
TOR - 11

allan said...

let's get sweaty on these sheets.

SoSock said...

Large man walking

allan said...

crap - time to burn the sheets

allan said...

fuk

SoSock said...

A little discipline would be nice. Second pitch pop-up by Youk and a first pitch ground out back to the pitcher by Drew.
Not very selective

Amy said...

OK, what the fuck is the score? I am back.

allan said...

OAK - 300
BOS - 200

Amy said...

Mod on? uh oh.

Amy said...

Still 3-2. OK. I will give Dice a chance. One ice cream and one cosmo = slightly more tolerant.

allan said...

yeah - trash-talking A's fan...

allan said...

more cosmos, pls

allan said...

& a mf dp

allan said...

yes
give us outs
we need them

Amy said...

Cosmos > Dice K

Not. even. close.

He truly sucks.

allan said...

that was nice.

allan said...

maybe i missed one, but dice threw 13 pitches in that inning, all strikes.

23-18-9 13 = 63

SoSock said...

Nice

allan said...

breaking news on oak tv

griffey announces retirement

Amy said...

I don't care how many strikes he threw. He still gives me way too much agita.

Yes, they announced about Griffey on NESN also.

Kathryn said...

What do the A's fans have to talk trash about?

Amy said...

It seems Laura and I are never threading on the same games this season. :(

allan said...

oh you know ... billy beane is a great author, theo will never write a book as great as moneyball. ... fenway sucks because there is no foul territory. ... that sort of thing ...

SoSock said...

Oof.
Personally, I think if Amy has to watch Dice pitch, the least Tek can do is hit a dong for her. After all the loyalty she has shown to him, it's not much to ask.

Amy said...

I agree, SoSock. Seeing Tek's dong would definitely make it worth watching DiceK "pitch."

allan said...

dice has struck out 3 of last 4 batters.

Zenslinger said...

I have Don and Jerry on this wonderful MLBtv that some kind person let me borrow.

Amy said...

Are you trying to persuade me to like him? If so, you have a long way to go.

allan said...

Dice is rolling.

Let's change discs -- Powerage!

Zenslinger said...

Don: Dice has been ahead of seven straight batters 0-2.

Love that OTT.

allan said...

Yes that is my goal. By October, I'll have you begging to buy my Dice cap for $20.

...

Did you know I had Dice-K cap?

allan said...

Microwave likes Bon Scott.

Zenslinger said...

What does a Dice-K hat look like?

allan said...

it is blue like a sox cap, but it has the japanese characters for "strikeout" on it.

SoSock said...

mmmmmmmm......
Billy Beane is a great statistician and thinker, only an average writer. Theo probably won't ever write a book as great as Moneyball. Who cares? Beane will never coach a team to a World Series title. Fenway is GREAT because the fans are close to the PLAYING FIELD, and therefore the players, instead of watching from the other side of an avenue's worth of non-playing-field ground.
Is taht all they got ;>

Hey - an OTT for Dice and a lead-off double!
It's a start

Amy said...

It may take til October. But I doubt I will want your DiceK cap.

allan said...

bust that slump, fy!

SoSock said...

Pop-ups with men on - very non-productive.
Wait, that's bad english isn't it?

Amy said...

Another perfect game going on, going into the 9th.

allan said...

holy fuck - galaragga!
wtf??
better switch over again!

Amy said...

Did anyone hear what team/pitcher it was?

allan said...

75 pit thru 8!

Amy said...

What the hell is going on with perfect games?

Amy said...

Cleveland against Detroit

SoSock said...

Poor Petey. It's gotta hurt. But Papi's coming back. He will too

allan said...

batting dilution.

Amy said...

I can't find the game. Is it on ESPN?

allan said...

still bottom of the 8th, 2 outs.

Amy said...

ESPN says it will switch over from St Louis Cinci game

allan said...

lotsa perfect games is a sign of the end times, isn't it?

allan said...

PAPI _____________

Amy said...

DiceK better be kissing Papi for that dong.

Amy said...

PAPI!!!!

Zenslinger said...

Hah hah.

So Large. So Fatherly.

allan said...

lemme bedazzle that shit for ya, sheets

allan said...

going to the 9th in det

meunier said...

That is what the Spanish announcers call him.

Amy said...

End of time or end of baseball.

Same thing, I guess.

SoSock said...

I see run(s)!

meunier said...

EL MAS SEXY!

Zenslinger said...

It's Detroit's Galaragga vs. Cleveland. One inning to go.

allan said...

i'm with the tigers game.

allan said...

OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

WHAT A CATCH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

allan said...

tigers annc have to change their pants.

allan said...

allan said...

allan said...

2 down?

he's still batting on my TV

allan said...

ok 2 down.

sosock has a mole ind et

Amy said...

Two down now.

Amy said...

What a play by Jackson!

allan said...

this is why the package is so cool.

click over to anything

allan said...

oh that ump has balls!

he's right i think but OWW

SoSock said...

Oh Noooooooooo!

Amy said...

SAFE????

Amy said...

Once again I hold my breath. This time for a pitcher I have never even heard of!

allan said...

he was out.

OMG -- cl;early out

det tv: "what an absolute travesty!"

Kathryn said...

OMG. How does he make that call?

Unbelievable.

What is it with umps this year?

Amy said...

HE WAS OUT!

allan said...

det tv sound seriously heartbroken.

crowd still booing

back to sox.

SoSock said...

The ESPN announcers in the studio are saying it should have been an out. I don't have it on. Redsock?

Amy said...

Man, that is AWFUL.

allan said...

in real time, i thought he made a gutsy but correct call.

replay -- clearly safe. by half a step. no question about it.

Amy said...

I think baseball needs to use instant replay. That is just awful.

Kathryn said...

First baseman jawing with Joyce.

Zenslinger said...

Donald singles vs. Galaragga.

Anyone else kind of relieved? Three perfectos in the space of a month would be a little creepy.

Amy said...

He was SOOO far out. How could he call that? Where was the manager??

allan said...

DREW -- TRIPLE, MO-FOS

Amy said...

OK, back to the Sox.

Amy said...

Boy, that really is unfair.

Makes me less mad at DiceK. Have to use my anger towards that asshole umpire.

allan said...

you figure at that moment, an ump will err on the side of history, call the outside pitch a strike, bang bang play goes to pitcher, etc.

damn.

allan said...

he ain't gonna feel so good in about 20 minutes when he sees a replay.

Zenslinger said...

Look at that passionless speed as Drew gets into third easily.

Zenslinger said...

Uh, my sense of relief did not include any knowledge of the bad call.

allan said...

drew: "wtf? i'm on third, you assholes."

Zenslinger said...

Two fucking pop-ups after a leadoff triple? Damn.

SoSock said...

O.M.G!
Just saw the replays. The call was horrendous!
He was clearly out - by a foot or more.
And even worse that it came after that absolutely incredible catch by Jackson to keep it alive

allan said...

i don't now how far the inning went, but they should reverse the call and wipe out the other batters after the #27.

SoSock said...

Next batter was out. Game over

Amy said...

Next batter made the third out.

Kathryn said...

Next batter was out. Players got on Joyce and then Leyland was in his face.

He was in perfect position. I'm always amazed that they usually get those close calls correct, even when it looks different in real time. I don't know what happened here? It's like he wanted to break up the perfecto. Be the story.

SoSock said...

Make that THREE pop-ups.
Drew - "No wonder I don't care enough to really try"

allan said...

fuck it - dice is dealing now.

Amy said...

Interesting, Mrs. G. He sure will be the story.

Kathryn said...

Maybe his moustache got in the way.

Okay, back to the important game. Keep dealing Dice.

allan said...

could they get the umps together and reverse the call? they *could* but won't.

BAL - 000 001
MFY - 402 00

FKR - 000 010 0
TOR - 110 000

SoSock said...

How about this. 7th inning and Dice is still in there. No walks. 78 out of 100 pitches have been strikes.
Is there a slight warming of the ice in Amy's heart.
Oh, that's just the cosmo :)

allan said...

ack - you may have jinxed the no-no.

Amy said...

Somehow there should be some appeal process when a call is that blatantly wrong.

Amy said...

LOL, SoSock! Yes, I am feeling some warmth, likely the cosmo. But I have to admit he has been pretty sharp as the game has progressed.

allan said...

bard has been up

Amy said...

I should have kept my mouth shut.

SoSock said...

Nice outing by Dice.

Now get him the fuck outta there!

SoSock said...

Bring on Shakespeare!

Have I.....nevermind

Kathryn said...

Whew, just foul each way.

Amy said...

K!

Kathryn said...

Nice slider.

allan said...

dice: 6.2-10-3-0-7, 109

SoSock said...

thx

SoSock said...

In just 15 minutes you could score a hell of a lot of insurance runs.... with or without Geico.

Bust out Petey!

allan said...

FY RBI!!!

SoSock said...

There it is!

Hells yeah!

Amy said...

Nice to see FY being gritty.

allan said...

why does the oak tv have bos up 6-3?

isn't it 5?

SoSock said...

Been a while since we've seen this :)

Amy said...

Maybe Oak TV knows Youk will get a hit?

Kathryn said...

My son is listening to the Tigers postgame. They said that Joyce admitted it was the wrong call.

SoSock said...

5 - yep

Amy said...

So it will be Drew who drives in the 6th run.

Amy said...

And what does that admission do for the pitcher, the record books? Is there no recourse?

Kathryn said...

I just heard the press conference. Joyce's comments:

No, I had a great angle on it. I just missed the damn call. I missed it. I missed it from here to the...wall. I really thought I got the call right. I thought he beat the play. I thought he beat him to the bag. I thought he beat it. At that moment...

Now that I'm standing here and I've seen it on the replay...I missed it, I missed it.

SoSock said...

Clarifying - Been a while since we've seen Papi with the IBB.
Or at least it's been a while since I'VE seen it.
GDGD - "in play - no outs". Me - "yay!" Then it goes on to describe a routine fielder's choice.
pffffft

allan said...

bot up

Kathryn said...

93 mph change. You gotta love it.

allan said...

top 9 for tampa
jays 2, rays 1

allan said...

K-ust

Kathryn said...

SoSock, GDGD should say out(s) and run(s). That would help.

Amy said...

And yet...despite that? No recourse? No way for MLB to correct such an obvious mistake?

Sometimes I hate baseball.

Zenslinger said...

The slider that got Cust was probably high, but still very nasty.

Zenslinger said...

Fucking Tampa tied it up.

Kathryn said...

top 9 for tampa
jays 2, rays 1

I'm not watching. Let me know when it is over.

Amy said...

Are you serious? They tied up the game. Damn, they really are hard to beat.

allan said...

they are tough -- but the jays suck ass.

Amy said...

When I first heard the crowd chanting Beat LA, I thought perhaps they thought that Oakland was in Los Angeles.

Zenslinger said...

Tampa's up 3-2 and looking for more.

That occurred to me, too, Amy.
