G59: Red Sox 4, Spiders 1

Red Sox - 101 000 110 - 4 8 2
Spiders - 000 000 001 - 1 6 1
Dice: 8-4-0-2-5, 112. Matsuzaka has pitched eight shutout innings in two of his last four starts (1.98 ERA in 27.1 IP).

Marco Scutaro: three doubles (ties career high; also June 5, 2009), two runs scored, walk. Looking at the win probability values, the biggest hit of the game was Scutaro's double to start the game. He had three of the five top plays in WPA.

The Red Sox are now in third place, 4 GB Tampa Bay and 1.5 GB New York.
Example
Daisuke Matsuzaka / Fausto Carmona
Scutaro, SS
Pedroia, 2B
Ortiz, DH
Youkilis, 1B
Martinez, C
Drew, RF
Beltre, 3B
Hall, LF
Reddick, CF
Cleveland (21-34) is last in the AL Central, 11 GB the Twins.

The Spiders are 12th (out of 14 teams) in the AL in runs scored (222); the Red Sox and Yankees are tied for first, with 314*. When Cleveland has allowed more than four runs in a game this season, they are 1-29 (Boston is 10-17).

* In fact, among all MLB teams, the Red Sox are first in OPS (.851) and second in OBP (.351), slugging (.464, .006 behind Toronto), home runs (79) and doubles (136, 1 behind Toronto).

Cleveland is hitting .239/.308/.365 over its last 20 games, and is 8th in team OBP and 12th in slugging in the AL. Austin Kearns (.309/.386/.475) and Shin-Soo Choo (.283/.382/.458) are their top hitters and Russell Branyan leads the team with a .482 SLG. Boston has four players slugging over .500.

The Spiders' pitching staff has the worst ERA in the AL (4.84) and worst WHIP (1.559); those numbers rank them 27th and 29th, respectively, among the 30 MLB teams. Carmona (3.53 ERA) and Mitch Talbot (3.54) are their best starters. The Red Sox will face Talbot on Thursday.

Boston is tied for third place with Toronto, 4.5 GB the Rays. The rest of the AL East is off today.
Example
June 7

1908 - The Tigers turn a triple play against the Red Sox for the second day in a row.

1911 - Heinie Zimmerman and Al Kaiser of the Cubs both steal home in the seventh inning against the Dodgers.

1927 - Browns starter Milt Gaston is pulled in the third inning and on his way back to the dugout, he leaps into the stands to punch a heckler.

1938 - At Fenway Park, Cleveland pitcher Johnny Allen is told by the umpire to cut off part of his dangling shirt sleeve so the batters will not be distracted. Allen refuses and walks off the mound.

2000 - Blue Jays pitcher Clayton Andrews hits an apparent single to right field for his first major league hit, but Atlanta's Brian Jordan is playing shallow, and Jordan throws Andrews out at first base. Jordan will throw out a total of three runners at first base during the season.

2007 - Curt Schilling loses a no-hitter with two outs in the ninth when Oakland's Shannon Stewart singles.

Also, from PA:

Hermida running in the outfield along with Ellsbury. ... Bonser is here and will be added to the roster. No word yet on the corresponding move.

Benjamin said...

Corresponding move is Bot bereavement.

There are only 2 teams with more wins than the Red Sox (33*):

Rays (37) and Yankees (35)

[* Also with 33: Blue Jays, Twins, Atlanta, Cubs, Cardinals, Padres, Dodgers]

PA with the latest from Tito:

Papelbon on three-day family leave/bereavement list; no other info.

Ellsbury will go to California later this week for a third opinion on his ribs. Scott Boras suggested it; Red Sox agreed.

Cameron scheduled to play tomorrow.

Hermida available to pinch hit, hopes to play tomorrow.

Delcarmen doubtful for today.

Ortiz's wrist is fine.

Why, oh why, is there so much lack of balance in the divisions? The three teams with the most wins---all in OUR division....just not fair. Maybe they should realign the divisions since geography seems rather irrelevant in this day and age. You can get from Boston to Atlanta or Cleveland or Chicago as easily as you can get to Tampa. Maybe they should run the divisions across the country instead of vertically.

I know it will never happen, but it stinks that our chances at a wildcard are severely hampered by the fact that we are in the same division as the Yankees and Rays. Thank goodness for Baltimore.

CLE may not hit well, but they are 5th in the AL in walks, after the Twins, Red Sox, MFY, and FKR.

They do not hit HR (13th in AL), so Dice should pound that effin' zone.

allan said...

We should win at least 3 of the 4 games. Splitting the series is not acceptable.

Wait, who's left? Do we have 9 guys on the field right now?

allan said...

don was saying tito doesn't have many decisions to make because he doesn't have a lot of players.

"okay, you 9 guys are playing. don't get hurt, because you gotta make it thru the whole game!"

...

9 pitches for dice in the 2nd, 8 strikes.

fusionmouse said...

Wow look at Dice pound the strike zone 19 of 25 pitches and two quick innings!!

Must be the good DK not the evil DK.

Is Amy watching?

Reddick didn't hop up after the slide, but that still looked like obstruction afterwards. There's no reason to crouch in the basepaths waiting for a ball that's sailed into the outfield.

allan said...

redmond had thrown out only 8% of runners? ... how about we take adv. of that for a change.

...

STOP BUNTING!!!!!!!!!!!

fusionmouse said...

I concur... I want laser show not bunt!

Kathryn said...

They can't turn the DP x 2!

Aaaaghhh. Did the Dice K with a goatee (i.e. Evil DK) take the mound this inning?

s1c said...

Oh and thanks for the wishes yesterday, L-girl and Amy!!!

fusionmouse said...

He escaped... but he nibbled working from behind this inning.

fusionmouse said...

V-mart lead off double!

fusionmouse said...

Look at JD leave the bat on his shoulder! If he cared he'd swing at those pitches off the plate.

allan said...

he looked at 5 pitches!!! how is OB taking it?

Just tuned in for a few. I do not want to be responsible for DiceK imploding. GO SOX! I will be back, probably after DiceK comes out at some point.

Amy said...

Hi, S1C! Good to see you here, and hope you had a good birthday. If I encouraged you to return to JOS, then I have done one good thing this season. :)

s1c said...

Ok who's going to go see A-team!

allan said...

after the world series ...

i would like to rent a season or 2 of the tv show and relive that too!

allan said...

if zen is out there, don was talking about carmona being 1-10 in his rookie season, then 19-8. i know he did better in year #2, but that was the only stat don gave for both seasons.

s1c said...

well Flo and FY are in big time slumps now

Kathryn said...

Caught stealing. Well done!

Amy said...

I am in and out. But I still believe I am all powerful and the DiceK curse.

Zenslinger said...

Carmona was amazing his 2nd season. 2007 if I remember and a close third behind Extra Cheese and Beckett for the Cy Young. But to me, ERA is the measure of a pitcher's performance. It's not perfect, but it's what I look at first. I guess W-L is still the first go-to for most announcers and such. Perhaps they know better, but don't think the audience does, and don't think it's their job to teach it.

I'm going back to Bikram Yoga tonight after a long absence. Scared.

allan said...

tell her a joke, shecky!

:>) !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Zenslinger said...

3.06 ERA (148 ERA+) with a 1.21 WHIP.

Kind of hilarious to see who sponsors his BRef page.

Angry Steve said...

all of these LOB's are frustrating...

fusionmouse said...

DK's doing well but the offense is weak. 0 for 9 with RISP and 7 LOB through 6.

Please get more runs!

Angry Steve said...

On a side note, Sox pick upcoming in the MLB Draft...

Zenslinger said...

Have only noticed because he's been on my fantasy team last year and this year, but Choo is the shit. Some power, steals bases, belive his defense is good, too.

Zenslinger said...

Vmart sporting a .300 BA now. Nice.

OPS around .840. And rising.

s1c said...

Dear Red Sox - a couple of runs would help the anxiety factor in the s1c household.

thanx

falls behind 3-0, gets the count full and then a swinging K!

I come back -- a little shaky -- from my first yoga in months to good news.

Dice: 8 scoreless, 4 hits -- all singles. Did anyone get to second, much less third on him?

Eggg-sellent.

allan said...

. Did anyone get to second, much less third on him?

One guy got to second -- Crowe stole second after walking with two outs in the third.

(Also Kearns got to second "and beyond" (somewhat) as Beltre tagged him out on the baseline; not sure if that counts, since it was all part of Branyan hitting the infield grounder)
