G62: Spiders 8, Red Sox 7

Red Sox - 410 000 002 - 7 10 0
Cleveland - 003 003 002 - 8 12 4
The Red Sox were down to their last strike, trailing 6-5, but J.D. Drew was hit by a pitch and Adrian Beltre homered to left.

Daniel Bard loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the ninth (4-pitch walk, double, 5-pitch walk), but then nearly escaped trouble. He struck out Travis Hafner looking and got Jhonny Peralta to foul out to catcher. But Russell Branyan blooped a hit over Dustin Pedroia into short right field -- Cleveland had two bloop hits in their sixth-inning rally, also -- and the Spiders won the game and split the series.

Bard's inability to throw strikes when he first came in could have been because of not having enough time to warmup or because he has been worked like a mule this season. (While still being our most effective reliever.) He has pitched in exactly half of Boston's 62 games (and six of June's 10 games). Among AL pitchers, only Tampa Bay's Randy Choate has pitched in more games (32). But the differences between the two pitchers is stark.
       GMS INN BF PIT
Choate 32 16.1 70 247
Bard 31 32.2 130 477
Bard has now pitched 32.2 innings, tied for the most among AL relievers, and before tonight, he was 6th in most pitches thrown.

Nuxhall: "Probably two weeks prior to that, I was pitching against seventh, eighth and ninth graders, kids 13 and 14 years old. All of a sudden, I look up and there's Stan Musial ..."

PA, EB:

Hot:

Beltre has hit safely in 16 of his last 20 games with 10 multi-hit games. 30 of his last 80 (.375)

Martinez is 27 of his last 57 (.481) with three homers and 11 RBIs over 16 games.

Youkilis is 15 of his last 35 (.429).

Hall is 12 of his last 31 (.387) with two homers and eight RBIs. That's over 11 games.

Not:

Pedroia is 16 of his last 90 (.178) over 22 games with three RBI and 11 strikeouts. He is hitless in his last 14 at-bats.

Ortiz is 1 for 23 in his last seven games with two RBI and six strikeouts. That has dropped his batting average from .275 to .242.

Lowell is 2 for 22 since May 9 with one RBI.

When Beltre's six-game hitting streak was being discussed last night, NESN put up the stat for his batting average during that streak: .318! Amazing!

Except it was lower than the .333 he was hitting for the whole season. They make some strange editorial decisions at NESN.

Red Sox Medical Director Dr. Tom Gill and Dr. Lewis Yocum issued the following statement today in regards to outfielder Jacoby Ellsbury:
“An MRI of Jacoby’s thoracic spine and posterior rib area, recommended by us jointly, revealed a non-displaced rib fracture and edema in the left posterior-axillary line. This fracture, which is in a different area than the initial fractures and which was not present on previous scans, is likely the result of a new injury which occurred when Jacoby dove and impacted the ground during his brief return to play. Jacoby will require several weeks of rest and physical therapy.”

In other news, Tony Massarotti is still an asshole.

I'm looking forward to reading an apology from Mazz in tomorrow's Globe.

HA HA HA HA HA!!! Sniff...

Remy: The Cleveland defense is brought to you by...nobody.

mattymatty said...

It appears DO is either off tonight or caught in the bathroom. Not a word from him through the first three pitches.

allan said...

where is don?

RedSoxDiehard said...

Much better already!

mattymatty said...

No outs and already we've surpassed our offensive output from last night. Good start.

mattymatty said...

Still haven't heard anything from or about DO. Remy doing PBP and color.

mattymatty said...

They have someone else sitting in for DO now.

tim said...

Whose this doing PBP? I wish I tuned in for the lack of PBP, sounds like it would've been sweet.

All this guy's done is say whats going on on the screen.....like all PBP i guess. Zero value added.

allan said...

it's john rish -- from radio -- and he is doing radio -- telling us everything in front of us, including that yook is batting RH

allan said...

i think we just matched out baserunner total from last night!!!!

allan said...

rish clearly thinks that any dead air will somehow = a subtraction from his salary.

shut up and let the game breathe,

Andy Marte: the gift that keeps on giving.

Kathryn said...

Ouch, three errors in one inning, by the same guy!

RedSoxDiehard said...

3 errors?

I'm feeling a little better about former Red Sox prospects now than I was last night.

allan said...

making that throw was highly stoopid.

Zenslinger said...

Andy Marte: the gift that keeps on giving.

Yeah, the trade gets better and better for us with every error.

mattymatty said...

Lester better get that call too (4 inches off the outside corner).

Kathryn said...

Yep, I guess we could have had a guy like that?

Zenslinger said...

Butt-head with a long first inning. Gets out of it down 2-0.

tim said...

Orsillo on the shitter?

mattymatty said...

One batter in and Lester has more Ks than HH had through 4 innings last night.

mattymatty said...

Austin Kerns, Nationals cast off, #3 hitter for the Indians.

ump called pitches 1 and 4 strikes to scutaro. they were outside. pitch 5 was closer to the zone than both of 1 and 4 and he called it a ball.

Our offensive strategy today: hit it to Marte

rish has called hernandez "donald" on two straight plays. they do not look alike.

mattymatty said...

I don't think Rish has much idea whats going on. In fairness,he probably didn't get any notice he would have to do this.

mattymatty said...

Im calling the grand slam here.

mattymatty said...

Crap... Beltre 0-2 w/ bases loaded today.

allan said...

hafner swings. rish: "hit to center field, not deep."

pedroia caught the pop up, barely off the infield dirt.

mattymatty said...

Defense? Lester don't need no defense.

allan said...

batters thru two innings:

Looked like Cameron never really ran very hard. Also looked like he was safe anyway.

allan said...

wtf - jogging from 1st to 2nd?

Kathryn said...

Safe.

allan said...

and if he is not 100% and cannot run well WHY THE FUCK IS HE TRYING TO STRETCH HITS INTO EXTRA BASES????

mattymatty said...

Good question, RS. I don't think he ever really though there was a possibility he'd be thrown out. Thats the only theory I can come up with.

allan said...

man, rish is a top graduate of the "trupe school of judging the distance of fly balls to the outfield".

Patrick said...

oh yeah, he remembers, I'm jon fucking lester.

RedSoxDiehard said...

is it my imagination, or does Beltre have problems running the bases?

OK, as I'm typing that, Remy is praising him... but it seems to me like he always rounds too far and risks getting thrown out. Plus there have been a couple of times he's been thrown out @ Fenway misjudging balls off the Wall. It's like it seems awkward, but he always does it that way, I guess, like hitting homers from one knee or trampling outfielders.

allan said...

remy likes that for sure. pressure on the other team, etc. (i thought it looked very risky to go to 2nd on that, but the play was not as close as it first seemed). has he been gunned out for being too agresssive?

Hey all--skimming but not posting while I do other things.

Patrick said...

OB with absolutely useless stats: when Jon Lester is given a lead of 4 runs or more he is 29-1.

Don't bother to put that into context, just wow me.

allan said...

we are here!

don got sick before the game, it sounded like. had never missed a game before. (i think he is resting on the floor in the back of the booth)

Amy said...

Congratulations to you and Laura! That's wonderful news for you guys and for Canada.

Amy said...

Poor Don. That's amazing that he has not missed a game. He must really be sick.

allan said...

thanks - have printed out passport applications already!

Amy said...

SHIT

Amy said...

Are you guys keeping both passports? I think I remember that Laura said you could keep both and be dual citizens.

allan said...

yep - dual.
no need to choose.

Benjamin said...

Poop.

nick said...

congrats a grats!

I'm leaving this joint for a while. Tell Cleveland to stop with this shit. It's not OK.

RedSoxDiehard said...

has he been gunned out for being too agresssive?

There was one for sure, part of the 4-game sweep by the Rays in April, the one Garza pitched. It was the 5th inning and the first hit we got but then he was thrown out by a mile trying to stretch it to a double. I remember thinking, "The new guys can't read the Wall yet" because Hermida and Hall were having trouble fielding out there too. Maybe the impression of that one time has just lingered in my brain.

Wasn't he also tagged out at 2nd one time after sliding past the bag?

He just scares me with those really big turns.

Benjamin said...

Yay, passports mean you can come visit.

Amy said...

WTF is going on??

RedSoxDiehard said...

This is NOT cool. STOP IT.

Amy said...

That's good. You have a hard enough time at the border with a US passport. And we need you to come back for JOS 3!

we should be able to use canadian passports when we go to buffalo to fly out at the end of july. very curious what (if anything) happens.

according to the application, we do not need to supply our US passport data. so if the countries do not share data and they ignore our license plate, we should not get harassed...

Amy said...

You mean US customs will be less suspicious of your Canadian passports than they were of your US passports?

allan said...

no, that they would not get a message pop up on their computer screens saying "harass these people for 30-60 minutes" when they swipe our passports.

Amy said...

Ahh, got it.

allan said...

everything goes like normal until they swipe the passports. then it's please turn off the engine and give me your keys.

next time we go through, if we had US passports only, i want to turn off the car and hand the keys in with our passports.

custom guard: why are you giving me your car keys?

me/laura: you'll see.

(laura thinks it is not a good idea. maybe i'll just put the car in park and turn it off.)

mattymatty said...

OH GREAT... Youk is hurt.

bunt?

Kathryn said...

Let Scutaro hit.

mattymatty said...

Please don't bunt... aww, dammit! When did we become the '78 Cardinals? We pay that guy lots of money to hit.

allan said...

we need a hit, mr. fy.

Benjamin said...

Playing for the tie on the road, eh.

mattymatty said...

That's a prime reason you don't bunt. You only get so many opportunities in an inning and giving one up is plainly self defeating.

allan said...

booo.

yook - mild back spams

("soft")

mattymatty said...

Ortiz has missed at least two very hittable pitches this game.

mattymatty said...

Wait for the Mazz column tomorrow pronouncing Youk a softie.

Kathryn said...

I bet he wasn't running out of the box.

mattymatty said...

F!!! I can't believe he didn't beat that out...

great idea to bunt.

Bard's inability to throw strikes when he first came in could have been because of not having enough time to warmup or because he has been worked like a mule this season.

I beleive neither fact has anything to do with the way he pitched, In my opinion he looked scared and very tentative. He was ineffective, no excuses ,just bad.

But why would he suddenly be scared and tentative? He's not usually, and he certainly couldn't be intimidated by the Cleveland lineup.

There's a difference between excuses and reasons, I think.

Do you think he walked Crowe, because he is being overused?

Or didn't have long enough to warmup?

He gave it up , and like I said he never looked comfortable, stepping off alot pacing around the mound ,rubbin his head.

Another point overlooked, although I didn't read the whole thread, we very rarely play a no double Defense late in games(remy mentioned it though), we are not having this conversation if Beltre is on the line...

laura k said...

Are you implying that's not possible? I don't know the answer, of course, as I'm not Bard, but it's certainly possible.

I'm not big on post-mortem, to me the whole thing is pointless. I just don't think "scared" is a reason in this instance - more like a symptom but not the disease.

allan said...

Turns out Bard did not get up until Beltre's dong. He was absolutely rushed into the game. He said his mind was going a mile a minute when he got to the mound, he had not had a chance to settle down and get calm. Plus I did not look at the f/x data, but I recall he was being squeezed.

So does that make us both right?

9casey said...

Then you have to wonder why Tito didn't start the inning with Ram Ram, wait till the batter was introduced. then bring in Bard.
