G72: Rockies 2, Red Sox 1

Red Sox - 000 000 001 - 1 7 0
Rockies - 000 010 01x - 2 9 0
Lester (6-6-1-1-6, 90) allowed a single and a walk to start the fifth, and had nearly pitched out of danger when Todd Helton rapped an RBI single to right. Hideki Okajima gave up a run on three consecutive one-out singles in the eighth.

Chacin allowed four hits and five walks in 6.2 innings, but they were nearly all bunched together in two innings. Mike Cameron singled to open the third, but was thrown out stealing. Josh Reddick singled and, after a bunt from Lester, Marco Scutaro and Dustin Pedroia walked. With the bases loaded, Victor Martinez worked a full count but grounded to second.

In the seventh, Adrian Beltre walked with one out and Daniel Nava singled. After Chacin fanned Cameron, he walked Reddick to load the bases. Joe Neimel came into face pinch-hitter David Ortiz and Papi grounded to second.

Boston rallied in the ninth as Beltre lead off with a double. Nava struck out, but Cameron singled Beltre home. Pinch-hitters Bill Hall (F9) and Mike Lowell (6-3) could not deliver. Lowell's grounder was deep in the hole, but Clint Barmes had time to dive for it, tumble a bit, then get to his feet and throw to first. A turtle could have beaten it out for a hit, but, alas, Lowell is no turtle.

The Yankees beat the Diamondbacks 9-3 and the Rays lost to the Padres 2-1, so both Boston and Tampa Bay fell to 1.5 GB in the East.
Example
Jon Lester / Jhoulys Chacin
Scutaro, SS
Pedroia, 2B
Martinez, C
Youkilis, 1B
Beltre, 3B
Nava, LF
Cameron, CF
Reddick, RF
Lester, P
The last time the Red Sox played in Colorado was October 28, 2007, when Lester and friends finished a four-game sweep of the Rockies in the World Series.Lester gets the ball again tonight, as the Red Sox begin a road trip with three games each against the Rockies and Giants. (After that, five of their next eight games are against the Rays.)

AL East:
Padres/Rays, 7 PM
Yankees/Diamondbacks, 9:30 PM
Example
June 22:

1894 - Washington scores in every inning and beats Boston 26-12. Washington's George Tebeau scores four runs without getting a hit.

1912 - It's Ty Cobb's turn to bat with two outs in the bottom of the 9th, and the Tigers trailing 11-3, but no one can find him. George Mullin pinch-hits and flies out to end the game. Cobb was in the clubhouse taking a shower.

1916 - The Braves pull off a triple steal against the Giants in the 11th inning. It is the only extra-inning triple steal in National League history. It has happened only once in the AL: by the White Sox against the Senators on June 25, 1941.

Thanks for the kind words, RS.

Is anyone else shocked that San Diego is 40-29, +59 RD?

Also, the Red Sox have out-scored SD by 102 runs so far.

Thanks, WCS.

Do you live out west? I just moved to Portland, OR from Philly.

mattymatty said...

Yeah, Jonny L!

I can't believe we have to listen to Rockies announcers. That's how much Allan dislikes Dave O'Brien!

So on Thursday Tim will glimpse behind the gamethread curtain here at Chez L-Sock.

laura k said...

Mattymatty, how do you like Portland so far? My friends who have lived there really liked it.

So weird to see the pitcher bat. It's hard for me to believe that I used to watch all games by these rules.

laura k said...

I feel the same way re DH. But honestly, I hardly remember baseball before the DH. By the time I was a conscious fan, it was post DH.

Amy said...

Hard to imagine that. No wonder Laura gets pissy about it!

allan said...

CS - must have missed a sign. was dead easy.

laura k said...

Lucky Laura.

Indeed

Amy said...

I remember hating the DH rule when it was adopted.

laura k said...

Hard to imagine that. No wonder Laura gets pissy about it!

People may think I am impatient.

They are wrong!

Amy said...

And remember I was a Mets fan until 75 so really thought that the AL was ruining baseball.

laura k said...

Speaking of Allan complaining, one season I forbid the word JIMY to be uttered in my presence.

It came to that.

Then Jimy was gone, and it only got worse!

Amy, I was thinking of you re Mets and no DH.

laura k said...

Apodaca, great name. Sounds like an Italian dish. Chicken apodaca with pesto.

allan said...

mattymatty said...

Sorry for the delayed response, L-girl. I'm kinda in and out tonight (kids).

I love Portland. The weather has sucked since I've been here (about a month and a half), but today was beautiful. I love that you can see Mt. Hood from downtown. Never fails to blow my mind.

Also blowing my mind: Chacin's lack of control. Make him throw a strike Victor!

allan said...

L: "FLUbaldo

Amy said...

Maybe that flu is the key to Matty's predictions of his unsustainable record.

Patrick said...

AHHH!! NO SQUANDER, NO SQUANDER!!!

mattymatty said...

Wow, that sucked. At least we made him throw some pitches.

laura k said...

Amy said...

meunier said...

chupe la verga.

laura k said...

Mattymatty, that's great. I have only been to the coast in Oregon, but it was one of the most beautiful places I've ever seen. A whole coastline without commercial development - what a concept!

Kathryn said...

Yes Laura, we were at Sunday's game. Great seats behind home plate about 20 rows up or so. It was great to see HH regain his composure and pitch really well. I was hoping for a pitcher's duel and it didn't look like I was going to get one after the first two innings.

We tour Berklee in the morning and then back home.

laura k said...

Excellent, Mrs G, what a treat!

mattymatty said...

Jon Lester will crush you now.

The Oregon coast is incredible. Actually got married there on the beach three years ago before I ever thought about moving out here. One downside: the Oregon beach is much more exotic if you live in Philadelphia, PA. Telling people out here we got married on the Oregon coast isn't very impressive. (not that that's why we did it, but that's the joke).

Hope Lester is OK...

Amy said...

A whole coastline without commercial development - what a concept!

Like the National Seashore on the Outer Cape? I have never been to Oregon.

Uh oh, Jon. Ouch.

mattymatty said...

I think that hit him in the wrist.

Amy said...

Guess he is ok. What are those bugs?

allan said...

rox pbp guy said herrera had "a long at-bat" in the first and "fouled off a bunch of pitches"

it was a 7 pitch AB and he fouled off 2 pitches. TWO!

Amy said...

Bugs, sun---doesn't look like fun out there.

laura k said...

Well, it's the Pacific coast, so it's very different than the Cape. There's a coastal road linked by a series of bridges, each one unique and beautiful, and a whole string of state park beaches, with beautiful coves and rock outcroppings.

Before our trip, I didn't know anything about it, so it was also a complete surprise and revelation, which is so cool.

MM, very cool re getting married there. I'm not from there so I can be impressed. :)

Amy said...

Sounds amazing. We did the PCH from SF to LA in 2003 and although there obviously is some commercial developement along sections of that, there are also those long sections of state parks and incredible vistas. Is it like that?

meunier said...

Is the Rockies starter related to Cologne Man?

laura k said...

I've driven the PCH several times, and I love it, especially (of course) the Big Sur section. Oregon, the one time I was there, anyway, was even less developed and less traveled than that.

We were there in 2002. We drove from border to border, Canada to Mexico, coastal route the whole way. Saw 5 games in 5 parks - only San Diego wasn't home.

Plus of course sand dunes, sea lions, San Francisco, Seattle, etc etc.

allan said...

GRILLED SALMON SANDWICHES IN SEATTLE!!!!!!!!

laura k said...

Come to think of it, I think the PCH is more dramatic - the changes in elevation and the hairpin turns.

Did you see games while you were there in 2003?

Patrick said...

Bah, A-Rod 2run HR. 2-0

meunier said...

Found it on wikipedia; Jhoulys and Houston Astros pitcher Gustavo Chacin are second cousins (Jhoulys' mother is the cousin of Gustavo's grandfather).

mattymatty said...

Big Sur is unbelievably beautiful. The Oregon Coast, at least where I've been and I haven't seen the whole thing or close to it, is darker, colder and the beaches are wider. Also, the sea stacks... well, I won't describe them. You can see them here: www.smate.wwu.edu/teched/geology/GeoHaz/Erosion/Erosion-02.JPG

Amy said...

We saw a game in SF, but it was pre-season. It was late March.

It must have been amazing to drive the whole coast! How many days did you allow for that?

We loved the PCH---one of our favorite travel experiences. I loved all those parks, all the seals, birds, sea elephants.

The Pacfic NW is the next part of the US I want to see---I'd love to do Vancouver, Seattle, Portland, and the coast and wine country in between.

Patrick said...

It was a very memorable trip. The drive was the whole trip. We spent a few days in SF and a few days in Seattle, but other than that it was a road trip. Then we spent a few days relaxing in Solana Beach, outside San Diego. I think the whole trip was 17 days, something like that.

laura k said...

This sucks, been in and out from the computer, kept seeing baserunners for the sox but we are still scoreless. Must be one of them LOBotomys.

And I'm quite looking forward to Thursday, I'll have to bring the laptop over (in addition to the obvious wine).

BTW, we're going to a cottage on Lake Erie over the July 2 weekend, so close to the Pelee winery. Definitely going to have to tour that.

You're kidding?! What a rip.

But I drink their Pinot Noir - daily, if possible.

Canada's southernmost point. More southern than half of US states! (Counting any bit of state as a whole state.)

We saw cacti growing there, kind of strange to see in Canada!

Amy said...

Some place near Detroit is south of half of the states in the US? How can that be?

mattymatty said...

Scutaro has hit the ball hard up the middle twice and has nothing to show for it. Tough luck.

tim said...

Haven't tried the pinot noir in a couple years at least, dunno why. I'll have to pick up a bottle of it sometime this week ;)

I used to hate sweet whites, but my son-in-law introduced me to Reislings, which I now like.

In college I used to drink nothing but sweet wines. I thought when I went from Boone's Farm Apple to Sauterne that I had become VERY sophisticated.

Amy said...

OK, I am going to go look at some maps.

Kathryn said...

tim said...

Yeah, I'll stay over. I heard the drive to here is easy in the morning, so no worries!

Dinner sounds amazing. I love garlic, probably more than any other food ever, and I've always wanted to try gazpacho because I think I will love it, just haven't gotten around to making a batch.

Kathryn said...

I'm not big on champagne, but there is this amazing lightly sparkled white that we buy all the time. Great summer wine.

Hell, great wine any time.

laura k said...

I make killer gazpacho, and very garlicky. Yum, I'll make it tomorrow morning so it can settle in for Thursday. All we need is good weather.
