G78: Red Sox 8, Rays 5

Rays - 000 000 122 - 5 12 0
Red Sox - 000 032 30x - 8 10 1
Lackey (7-8-1-2-3, 108) was a bit Diceian -- he allowed at least one baserunner in six of his seven innings and stranded two runners at third -- but he kept the Rays off the board until his 30th batter.

Boston needed five relievers to navigate the final two innings, including Daniel Bard and Jonathan Papelbon, though they each faced only one batter and threw only five and six pitches, respectively.

David Ortiz launched a three-run bomb in the fifth. The first three batters in the sixth reached base against Shields (5-7-5-2-6, 109) and two of them scored, with Jason Varitek and Daniel Nava getting the RBI. Varitek added a sac fly in the seventh and Bill Hall hit a two-run dong.

Adrian Beltre went 4-for-4, with two doubles and two runs scored.

The Mariners scored in five consecutive innings off Phil Hughes and beat the Yankees 7-4. The Red Sox are 1 GB New York.

On May 24, the Red Sox were 8 GB the first-place Rays. Since then, there has been a shift of nine games in the standings, and Boston is now 1 GA of Tampa Bay -- and 2 GB the Yankees.
                     Rays Red Sox
April 6 to May 23 32-12 24-21
May 24 to June 28 12-19 22-10
The Rays have won only three of their last 11 games, and five of their last 16.

On Sunday, center fielder B.J. Upton jogged after a triple in the gap and had to be restrained when Evan Longoria confronted him about it in the dugout. Longoria called it "the byproduct of a frustrated team". Manager Joe Maddon said it was "obvious" that Upton "did not run as hard as he could after the ball".

Shields's last six games: 8.12 ERA, with a .954 opponents OPS.

Also at 7 PM: Mariners/Yankees
Example
June 29

1897 - The Chicago Colts of the National League establish the record for most runs scored in a game, beating Louisville 36-7. No team will score 30+ runs for more than 110 years, until the Rangers defeat the Orioles 30-3 on August 22, 2007.

1905 - Moonlight Graham of the Giants plays in his only major league game.

Quite a weekend. I enjoyed the Friday game in San Francisco, however cold it was. I wanted to scream at the medical staff when they let Pedroia convince them he was OK after the injury. It wasn't until he had to go to first that they noticed how badly hurt he was.

Then I was in Las Vegas, hearing about the other injuries and just wondering if the % to make the playoffs hadn't taken a serious hit. But six weeks for Pedroia, 15-day for Martinez and no DL for Buchholz is not as bad as I had feared at first.

I got home last night to find out that I did indeed get the full-time teaching gig I had applied for. So, celebration!

Zen, congratulations!! That is wonderful news. Best of luck in the new position.

laura k said...

I'll be watching the game, but if we get NESN, I won't be threading. I'm collecting research for a future blog post.

laura k said...

NESN! See you all later. :)

does 9 still equal 8?

A suggestion for Mad Joe Maddon: try putting everyone in right field when Ortiz hits.

Rob said...

It would be great if there was a blackberry Blogger application. Oh well. Just got a Blackberry today.

Rob said...

Actually this isn't that bad!

mattymatty said...

Nava hasn't done much in the last week or so... and he continues the trend.

Ish, what model BB did you get? I love my Pearl. But I don't have a data plan, don't use it for email or FB. Weird, I know, but it works for me.

I'll have to come back later for your answer.

Hi Everyone. Crazy times here. Daughter leaves for Orlando tomorrow, house in disarray, workmen in and out. We had soot damage upstairs and the insurance company is beginning their work. Room by room cleaning, painting, and recarpeting. This will take forever.

SCUTARO!! Let's score some runs.

Kathryn said...

remy on bunt: if you can't get it to go fair, make sure it goes foul.

We heard that and chuckled. My husband says it would be pretty hard to mess up in that case.

allan said...

ugh - does not sound pleasant.

Kathryn said...

You had insurance work done with the water damage, right?

allan said...

we rent - so it was the landlord, but he did get some insurance $, yes.

Patrick said...

eastern bank inning - so i say "hey, why not put some runs in the bank?"

BOOOOOOOOOM!!!!!

laura k said...

The LL's insurance paid him about 1/4 of the work he did. He put in a whole new basement and bathroom.

But it took a very long time.

Kathryn said...

That pitch was fat and happy. Right down the middle.

laura k said...

Mrs G, is that just an expresion, or does your insurance co actually contract the work? Don't you get a payout and contract it yourself?

Kathryn said...

The whole insurance process is strange. The adjuster has been nice enough and they are repairing/replacing just about everything. We even had to turn down some services, like cleaning all of our clothing and replacing all of the ductwork. So, no real complaints about coverage or anything. They just seem to work at a very slow pace.

My husband is counsel for the insurance company, which could complicate matters, but so far has been okay.

allan said...

nesn must be training someone new on updating the count in the on-screen box. it has been wrong many times tonight, only to switch back.

Kathryn said...

L, we had options of how we wanted to handle it. The insurance company has a restoration company that they usually use. We went with them because they take care of everything. But, we also took the opportunity to upgrade a couple of areas, which we then are responsible for. It takes a little bit of coordination, but no big deal.

The payout is interesting. Right now, we have a fairly large check sitting on our dresser made payable to us and the restoration company. We then have to go back and figure our credits/overages, etc. I guess it will all work out in the end, we'll see.

laura k said...

Sounds as painless as can be expected, which is never painless, of course

I didn't know insurance co's did that.

Amy said...

Here I am in Brooklyn, NY, no Red Sox on TV. Now I know how you all feel.

It seems like the only Red Sox news I have seen in two days is about injuries. WTF?

Kathryn said...

How's the grandbaby Amy? Congratulations.

Kathryn said...

I'm not looking at the Yankees score until the game is over!

allan said...

amy, that has been about it.

laura k said...

Hi Amy! CONGRATS :)

Amy said...

Thanks, MrsG. He is WONDERFUL! We are renting an apartment nearby to help out, but have tonight "off."

So Harv gets to watch baseball on TV, while I watch on the laptop. What a role reversal!

Amy said...

Thanks, Laura, and thanks to you and Allan for your emails!

allan said...

harv, en-joy the game!

Amy said...

Harv just set me up with his mlb.com account.

allan said...

you could have used mine, too, if you want.

Kathryn said...

I think there must be something special about that first grandchild. My mom and daughter have a very special relationship, as I do with my grandmother (who is 102!).

Kathryn said...

It's a hit parade!!!!

Gotta love it.

Amy said...

Yay, Tek! An RBI!

Amy said...

MrsG, how did you know about the baby? Yes, I am looking forward to sharing with the new baby. He will, however, be a Mets fan, so we will have to share other things besides baseball!

Kathryn said...

Tek with a RBI for Nathaniel.

allan said...

102? wow.

Kathryn said...

I think Laura posted it on a non-game thread of JoS.

Amy said...

Cool! Thanks, Laura. :)

Kathryn said...

He will, however, be a Mets fan, so we will have to share other things besides baseball!

That will still work out. My father-in-law (MFY fan) selflessly gave my son a World Series Red Sox collage for Christmas after the 04 season.

Rick (f/k/a westcoastsox) said...

Lurking while working, but popped in to say CONGRATS, AMY!!!

Is Hall any better at 2B than in the outfield?

Amy said...

Thanks,WCS!

What's with these strike outs? Wow.

Quick drop-in to congratulate Amy. June is a good month to be born--in the opinion of this Sagittarius.

allan said...

L (and me) to Tim: enjoyed the sparkling wine tonight. thanks!

tim said...

Yeah, congratulations on the birth of Nathaniel!

Also, 'grats on the teaching job, zen.

Good news all around tonight.

Amy said...

Thanks, John and Tim!!

Amy said...

Oh, Zen, you got the job?? That's great!! I missed that news.

I guess despite all the bad Red Sox news, there has been some good stuff for JOS these past few days. :)

And we are beating the Rays, so that's good.

Kathryn said...

How does he do that? From one knee?

Amy said...

Wow, Beltre!!

I worry he will hurt himself with that one knee thing.

Patrick said...

Beltre is hitting his way out of Boston.

allan said...

cacti rbi!

Patrick said...

The Rays usually scare the shit out of me, but these guys look terrible.

laura k said...

June is an excellent month to be born, says Laura and Tim.

laura k said...

But I'm not really here.

Amy said...

Tim has a June birthday also?

Patrick said...

Kathryn said...

Billy HALL!!!!

allan said...

KINGDOM HALL!

laura k said...

Hallelujah!

Amy said...

Hall!

So....how DID the Rays dominate for so long this season?

Kathryn said...

How'd that pitching change work out for you, TB?

Amy said...

If the Red Sox make the post-season this year despite all these injuries and the slow start, then Francona should win some kind of award.

Patrick said...

So....how DID the Rays dominate for so long this season?

Luck! I could geek out and explain this in number, but ef that. They've been lucky.

allan said...

SEA - 011 113 000 - 7 12 1
MFY - 100 001 002 - 4 8 2

Amy said...

So Patrick...has their luck run out? Can we count on this continuing decline?

Patrick said...

I have no idea. They are good, and I think it's obviously a three team race.

I hope they dive bomb into fourth.

laura k said...

Tim's bd is 2 days before mine.

I can only post in btn innings. :)

Patrick said...

Must we rely on Bard for every non-starter inning?

We should make a trade sooner than later. Bard needs a break.

Amy said...

I agree, Patrick. Having only one reliable arm in the pen is dangerous.

allan said...

5 pitches for bard and atchison in the 9th.

Rick (f/k/a westcoastsox) said...

See, e.g., Zumaya

Benjamin said...

It feels like most of the suspense in this game has been whether we're going to rip off their heads before shitting down their necks.

Amy said...

Great images, Benjamin.

allan said...

rip heads tonight and shit necks tomorrow?

Benjamin said...

Zumaya had a history of lightly treated elbow injuries. That said, let's not give Bard any of his own.

Kathryn said...

That's a final on the MFY game?

I was serious about not looking until it was over.

allan said...

Fin @ Toilet.

Patrick said...

Standing O for Vlad in LA on his return as a Ranger.

Showing up Sox fans. Stay classy, LA.

Amy said...

What was the final score? Harv not watching so I figured it was bad...

Bad for him, good for us, that is.

I am one tired person...be patient with me.

Kathryn said...

Nice catch by the boy in the stands. I love it that everyone high fives him after that.

it was atchison and richardson -- they are not good. jeez.

Kathryn said...

Yes, I understand that we didn't use our best relievers. But it seems like a trade off. We saved some arms, but ended up using Pap.

As for the game, it took a while but hot damn is that water dirty!
