G47: Red Sox 7, Royals 0

Royals - 000 000 000 - 0 0 1
Red Sox - 005 002 00x - 7 5 1
JON LESTER PITCHES A NO-HITTER!!!

9-0-0-2-9, 130 -- and he was hitting his spots all night long!

It's the first no-hitter by a Red Sox left-hander since Mel Parnell did it against the White Sox on July 14, 1956.

***

Luke Hochevar (3.94, 108 ERA+) / Jon Lester (3.95, 109 ERA+)

MLB.com:
Hochevar wasn't at his sharpest last Wednesday night but he still managed to shut out the Tigers for six innings, giving up just four singles. He showed an ability to work out of jams ... This was his fifth start since being called up from Triple-A Omaha on April 20. In all but his first outing, he's pitched six or seven solid innings. With an effective sinker, he's been good at inducing ground balls...
Hochevar has never faced any hitter on the Red Sox. ... Seven Royals are a combined 4-for-27 (.148/.273/.148) against Lester.

Tampa visits Oakland at 10 PM. The Yankees have the day off.

UPDATE: Nice short Q&A with hitting coach Dave Magadan about how David Ortiz began hitting off a batting tee for the first time on May 1. Since then, he has hit .354 and has been spraying the ball all over the field.

Looks like the most normal lineup we've seen this season. Haven't seen this lineup very much. But this is what you envision in the offseason as your lineup.

Sarah Haendler said...

I think Dave and I may be going out to dinner tonight to celebrate his being done with his tour contract, so I'll miss most if not all of the game. Enjoy!

Jack Marshall said...

Ish: Good point. And that's why I think the Sox performance so far is just a shadow of what we should expect. From Lowell's injury to Ortiz' slump to Beckett's lost Spring Training, through the Japan trip, the Varitek flu and the weirdness of the last road trip, the team has never been able to settle down and show just how good it can be over a long period.

Rob said...

You too, Sarah. Good food!

allan said...

Isn't it somewhat rare that a team can roll on for weeks or a couple of months without any sickness or injury to any of its regulars?

Amy said...

I think we were spoiled by last season. As I recall, there were almost no injuries of any degree of seriousness. Of course, feel free to correct me if my memory has, as usual, failed me.

laura k said...

Monday night = theatre people night off. Have fun Sarah, see you tomorrow.

Jack Marshall said...

Sure, redsock, but don't you think the past month has been unusually weird? The flu particularly; No way the Devil Rays sweep if the team is healthy. I just feel that we have yet to see the Red Sox with all their plugs firing---don't you?

Patrick said...

It's hard to imagine we have yet to see what this team can do, when we top league in most offensive categories. If we can simply maintain our offense, that would be amazing.

allan said...

I just feel that we have yet to see the Red Sox with all their plugs firing---don't you?

I agree -- but there is always something. Even if we have the regulars in there for awhile, at least one of them will be slumping at some point. Then there is the starters and bullpen.

With everyone doing well at once, yeah, that would be something. Maybe in October!

Patrick said...

Coming into tonight we are second in the majors in runs, first in hits, first in total bases, first in average, third in OBP, first in slugging.

Our pitching hasn't been that impressive, statistically, but I feel like that will correct itself as pitchers get more comfortable.

laura k said...

It would be very rare to have a season without injuries or even a series of injuries. I didn't think the flu thing was weird. I actually didn't understand why anyone thought it was strange. But I was in the minority there (what's new).

allan said...

2007 Sox

Fewest games played by a regular: Tek - 131 and Manny - 133 and Pedroia - 139.

Can't recall anything serious, but no one missed any significant time.

(Jeemer was shut down for most of September.)

Amy said...

Well, and Tek played that few because he didn't catch for Wakefield---that wasn't an injury.

Last year was atypical, so this year does seem worse. Though I do think the number who were out with the flu was surprising.

allan said...

At redsox.com site, you could scroll through the transactions from last year for any disabled list activity ...

Rob said...

Time to steam some spinach and let the dongs outside!

Jack Marshall said...

L-Girl, I can't EVER recall a Sox team having multiple players---and starting pitchers!-- actually knocked out of games because of illness at the same time. Believe me, that really was unusual, just like the multilayered injury-heart palpatations-cancer avalanche that hit the Sox in 2006 was like nothing I've ever seen. For my money, last season's relative injury-free sreak made up for THAT.

Sarah Haendler said...

Can't seem to rouse sleeping Dave from the couch!

Is anyone else getting intermittent Spanish?

Is anyone else getting intermittent Spanish?

From NESN?

Sarah Haendler said...

From the NESN feed on EI.

Rob said...

I've got straight up NESN and no intermittent Spanish.

allan said...

we had some spanish -- but no spinach

laura k said...

We were getting Spanish audio too. Funny!

Rob said...

we had some spanish -- but no spinach

I'd like to switch that around.

Amy said...

Yes, Sarah, I was getting Spanish also. Not for a while now though.

SO are you going to wake him up or stay for the game? :)

laura k said...

I hear you, Jack, but I think memories are extremely faulty when it comes to those types of details.

allan said...

players could have still been banged up and not playing for a bit without a DL move, of course.

Amy said...

Love those 1-2-3 first innings.

Benjamin said...

So far so good.

Let's see what our regular lineup can do.

Joe Grav said...

Good evening folks. This is the first game I've gotten to watch in a while due to various conflicts. Hooray

laura k said...

1-2-3 innings now known as Mell Ott. Thanks to Jere.

Hi Joe!

Joe Grav said...

Also if you guys don't mind me making a cheap plug (I promise I won't be annoying about this), I'm working for a New England Collegiate Baseball League team this summer and we're opening up on June 7.

We're the North Shore Navigators and we'll be playing at Lynn's Fraser Field. website: www.nsnavs.com

The NECBL is a pretty sweet wood-bat summer league... check it out if you get the chance this summer.

(It's baseball related, so it's okay right? :P )

Sarah Haendler said...

I got a sleepy wake-me-up-in-a-little-while from Dave, so I'm going to watch the game for a bit. If he's not up by eight, I'm ordering a pizza! Or maybe chinese...

Joe Grav said...

So, no walks for Lester so far. Yay!

Joe Grav said...

I'm taking my mom to the game on Thursday afternoon (belated Mother's Day gift) , so I'm hoping Manny gets 499 by then.

Amy said...

Why Mell Ott? I must have missed that one.

Sounds like fun, Joe. Are you playing or doing front office work?

We go to Cape Cod League games during the summer. Lots of fun.

Rob said...

The NECBL is a pretty sweet wood-bat summer league... check it out if you get the chance this summer.

There used to be commercials here for the Sanford Mainers. Makes me chuckle. I looked for their baseball field up in Sanford, which is about 25 miles from here. Couldn't find it.

laura k said...

Joe, good luck this season! Wood bats = good.

Joe Grav said...

A 1-2-3-4-5-6 inning. (I really want to make that phrase stick)

laura k said...

Jere said One Two Three = OTT

I said that Mel Ott is a big x-word puzzle name - as you know, Amy.

And the rest is history. Jerestory.

Joe Grav said...

I'm working in sports information. Thus my job right now is to reach as many media outlets as possible to get the word out there. JoS counts as a media outlet. :D

I am not looking forward to the first road trip to Sanford.

Lynn, for all its faults as a city, has a very nice pro-quality ballpark that is pretty easy to find.

laura k said...

But the Mell was a typo. Just plain Mel Ott. One L, two Ts.

laura k said...

Damn right JoS is a media outlet! :)

Rob said...

Another high-five!

Amy said...

Ah, I wondered why it was Mell. THought that was part of the joke!

Sounds like fun, Joe. Is sports marketing where you want to end up as a career? Or is this a summer thing only?

Rob said...

I am not looking forward to the first road trip to Sanford.

Not looking for it because of the distance?

Joe Grav said...

I want to work in communications, but not sports communications. Still, any writing/media interaction experience is good.

Joe Grav said...

also, wood bats rool, aluminum bats drool

Joe Grav said...

a walk

Jack Marshall said...

I KNEW IT! You wait---pretty soon Manny will be high-fiving after every other play, then kissing people, then lord knows what. Just wait. This will get out of hand.

Sarah Haendler said...

Manny the politician.

allan said...

Yeah, I'd start worrying about that right away, Jack.

Rob said...

This will get out of hand.

Andy would be jealous.

laura k said...

I knew it. You wait. Jack now has something new to complain about.

laura k said...

Ish :)

Joe Grav said...

boo slow bouncing balls

Sarah Haendler said...

Joe, I don't think I want to see aluminum bat drool. It would probably be toxic.

Joe Grav said...

And re: Sanford, yeah, the distance. That one and the Vermont Mountaineers trip will be long ones indeed.

allan said...

You wait---pretty soon Manny will be high-fiving after every other play, then kissing people, then lord knows what.

Maybe spitting at the fans....

Oh wait.

Joe Grav said...

The only time I would support use of aluminum bats would be BC getting to use them against the Red Sox in the annual spring training game.

Jere said...

Let's not forget (you too, Don ORsillo) that Manny (and others) has been high fiving the crowd in the front row by the dugout after home runs for years.

Rob said...

Silly Jon. Throw to the plate.

Joe Grav said...

That was ugly

Sarah Haendler said...

Wow - Dave is up and stumbling about. He was really zonked!

I might get to go out for dinner yet!

Rob said...

And re: Sanford, yeah, the distance.

Sanford's not that bad. 70-90 minutes away from Lynn, I'd say.

laura k said...

Joe, when's the NYC trip?

Jere said...

That Spanish thing was weird, huh? I kept thinking the cat stepped on the SAP button.

Joe Grav said...

Amanda and I are going to NYC for one day on May 31 and are doing the two day trip on July 22-23 (? or maybe 23-24, I'm not sure)

Rob said...

Does Don hit on Heidi?

laura k said...

Powerful cat, she got our TV too.

Jere said...

Did Don say before that Ortiz' Red Sox HR total passed that of Manny's? Cuz that ain't right...

Joe Grav said...

we're going to the Paley Center for Media (the artist formerly known as the museum of TV & radio) on the 31st , plus just kind of strolling central park and getting dinner. The July plans are less hashed out, but they revolve around attending a concert.

At some point we want to hit up Ellis island.

We're geeks.

Amy said...

Ish, is that Youk in your avatar? It looks sort of like him, but somehow I cannot imagine him posing for a picture giving someone the finger. If not, who is that?

Sarah Haendler said...

We're off - see you guys tomorrow.

laura k said...

We'll be down there just before you, for a wedding. The "boy" I used to be the nanny for is getting married.

Way to feel old!!!

Rob said...

Ish, is that Youk in your avatar? It looks sort of like him, but somehow I cannot imagine him posing for a picture giving someone the finger. If not, who is that?

Yep. That's Youk.

Joe Grav said...

I feel old when I see pro athletes younger than me.

laura k said...

bye sarah, have fun!

Amy said...

Geeks rule, Joe. Ellis Island is definitely worth the visit. I haven't been to the Museum of TV/Radio and didn't even know it had been renamed.

Where will you stay? NY hotels have gotten totally out of hand.

Amy said...

Jesus, they are on the air dissing American Airlines.

Amy said...

OK, do they know they are on the air? What happened to the commercial?

Joe Grav said...

the 31st is just a day trip, but we are doing an L-girl special in july, the amsterdam inn.it's not bad

the museum of tv & radio is very simple: a massive archive of historic tv & radio broadcasts, with private listening/viewing booths.

basically, my paradise

Jere said...

well he said crap but no fuck or shit

laura k said...

"I feel old when I see pro athletes younger than me."

I've had that for too long, it has no effect on me anymore. :)

You know, wanting to do stimulating and interesting things when traveling is not geeky! We're all adults, we don't have to be too cool to be interested in stuff.

Jere said...

That was great!!! They forgot to go to commercial so we got to hear Rem and Don dissing American Airlines as the camera focused on a plane. I started taping but after Remy said the word "crap."

Amy said...

That was weird...did anyone else catch that on NESN?

Jere, are you referring to the Sue Simmons slip on TV in NY with Chuch Scarborough?

laura k said...

Joe, you didn't tell me if you took me up on any of those recommends. I'm glad it worked out for you.

Ellis Island is great. (And includes my grandfather's name on the wall.) MOTR is great too. I'd rather go next door to MOMA, but both are great in their way.

Amy said...

I feel old when I see pro athletes younger than me.

No comment, but LOL.

Jere said...

I was just referring to the fact that whenever that happens, I root for swears, but we only got a "crap." But I did enjoy Sue's "Fuck are you doing?!"

laura k said...

We heard it. Holding our breath to see what they would say.

Joe Grav said...

I'm surprised Lugo actually made that play.

Rob said...

I feel old when I see pro athletes younger than me.

I'm beginning to deal with that, as well. 19 and 20 year olds in the NHL, NBA, and MLB.

Joe Grav said...

Crosby makes me feel inadequate

Rob said...

Oh boy. We're about to get a very red western sky.

Jere said...

How sweet would it have been if Remy has just been like, "Oh fuck. Fuckity fuck fuck fuck. Fuuuuuuck."?

Sometimes in those situations, you see "beavershooting" by the cameraperson. This time it was just a plane going over, then a zoom into a cardboard sign in centerfield bleachers, which I'm sure we'll see soon.

laura k said...

"I'm beginning to deal with that, as well."

Everyone will if they're lucky.

allan said...

i have only 2 thoughts when that happens:

please don't cut to commercial
and
please say something really offensive

Rob said...

Crosby makes me feel inadequate

I agree. Even guys like Lucic and Kessel.

Amy said...

I hope American Airlines isn't a NESN sponsor.

If you do Ellis Island, you might also want to do the Tenement Museum on the Lower East Side. I found that fascinating---to imagine my grandparents living there a hundred years ago or so.

Jere said...

So is that Rem/Don uncensored thing living forever on the mlb tv saved broadcast? And the Spanish?

Rob said...

Did that say what I think it just said??

NESN.com

Hit it.

Amy said...

I wonder whether they are getting any shit yet. No apologies or comments yet from either of them.

Zenslinger said...

49 pitches for Lester...maybe Chris Smith will get his chance tonight.

Benjamin said...

What makes me feel old is thinking about the incoming freshman class at college (my partner's a professor). They were born in 1990, after Communism fell, etc. etc.

Rob said...

On a NESN Bruins broadcast earlier this season, they didn't go straight to commercial and Andy Brickley (color guy) was talking about something and blurted out "Fuckin' right!" and then realized they were still on the air and said "Oops. Sorry." Then they cut away.

Joe Grav said...

Class of 2012

laura k said...

Tenement Museum is fantastic. I second that - although it's not exactly convenient if you're not in the area already.

I learned about one of all-time favourite NYC books there: Banished Children of Eve.

Joe Grav said...

droooooooooooooo

Jere said...

Yes ish, NESN going the "sex sells" route just like every other stupid corporation in the whole damn world. It's pathetic. At least they had the sense to avoid "Get Some."

Benjamin said...

Drew gets first blood.

laura k said...

Just a PS on the feeling old thing: I'm not complaining. It's good. I'm glad to have the opportunity.

allan said...

Didn't Burger King have some slogan for one of its burgers: "I'd Hit It"?

I have to assume that they usually would not talk off the cuff between innings. Even if it's not broadcast, someone might get a tape and make it available via the internet tubes.

laura k said...

Nice! Thanks Capn.

Jere said...

I gotta play softball at 9, under the lights-style! I'll catch you all later. Try to record any fucks or shits from Remy...

Amy said...

I don't know that book. What is it about, Laura?

Youk! And Drew with fast wheels!

ANd stop all this talk about what makes you feel old. You don't want to get me started, do you?

laura k said...

I don't know if it's a guy thing, but I wouldn't think sex when I see "hit it". I'm not exactly naive, but that wouldn't come to mind.

Benjamin said...

How noodly is German's arm? From that spot on GDGD, Manny would've held the runner to second.

Amy said...

Haha, I got Youk and TEk mixed up.

Who is feeling old now?

Joe Grav said...

I'm not a big hit and run fan, but I love to see it when it works perfectly like it just did.

laura k said...

Amy, it's not nearly as known as it should be. It's historical fiction, focuses on the 1863 draft riots. I've read tons of NYC historical fiction and this book is my favourite.

Zenslinger said...

I am starting to feel old with my students not remembering Reagan or Cyndi Lauper or -- get this -- almost none had watched the Sopranos. But I'm happier in my 30s overall than I was in my 20s, so, I guess it's all right.

Isn't it a relief when Varitek hits?

laura k said...

Author: Peter Quinn

Rob said...

O'Brien: "It's not real sexy, but the Sox will take the run..."

Joe Grav said...

Lugo: even when he's driving in runs, he sucks

Benjamin said...

"I'd hit it" was McDonald's's ad.

It definitely has sexual connotations, although it's sometimes used in non-sexual ironic ways.

Looks like we at least got a run out of Lugo being Lugo.

Rob said...

JACOBY WHEELS FOR A TRIPLE!

Amy said...

I will have to add it to my summer reading list. Who's the author?

My students are now younger than my children. Enough said. But like Laura said, I am not complaining. In fact, this decade is the best yet. The Feisty Fifties.

laura k said...

My wireless connex shut down while My Boy was running to 3rd!!

Hit it, I'm sure it has sexual conntations, I meant I just wouldn't have thought of it.

I have never seen a single episode of The Sopranos either. Just some clips here and there. Not age, just choice.

Amy said...

Laura, FWIW, I see no sexual connotation to "Hit it" either. Must be male locker room talk??

Rob said...

My 40s are ending soon so I'll look forward to that.

laura k said...

Laura, FWIW, I see no sexual connotation to "Hit it" either. Must be male locker room talk??

That's what I'm thinking.

Amy said...

Got it. Just have to remember it or write it down. (One down side to the feisty fifties...)

laura k said...

Saw one ep of Sex and The City, hated it beyond my power to express.

Mostly I just don't watch much TV. I'm sure Sopranos was great, I just can't be bothered.

OK folks, bases loaded, 2 outs, how many score...???

Joe Grav said...

Huge at-bat here. Gotta get multiple runs out of this inning.

Rob said...

I laugh when kids ask what a film camera is.

allan said...

I'm getting sick of posting "#21 grand slam for Manny?" every time he comes up with the sacks full.

Just hit it, Being!

Benjamin said...

It's sexual.

GDGD is pushing video of "Lugo's rbi", but he doesn't get an rbi for hitting into a double play.

Zenslinger said...

"I'd hit it" = "I'd fuck her"

laura k said...

Film is great. We use both.

Man-ny! Man-ny! Man-ny!

Rob said...

Heh. He said hit it. Sex sex sex sex.

laura k said...

I repeat: I wasn't doubting it was sexual. I said, I don't think of sex when I hear that. Take three.

Joe Grav said...

Girls say "I'd hit it" too, but it probably started with guys

Rob said...

I repeat: I wasn't doubting it was sexual. I said, I don't think of sex when I hear that. Take three.

laura k said...

Some pedants like to argue that most "ground-rule doubles" don't result from the ground rules. In their view, a true "ground-rule double" is like when the ball gets lost in the ivy on the wall at Wrigley. Other doubles governed by rule 6.09 are then deemed "automatic" doubles, although the rule doesn't contain that word.
