Ramirez Pulled From Lineup

Manny Ramirez was pulled out of the Red Sox lineup tonight only a few minutes before the game was about to begin.

Shit. Shit, shit, shit.

It's not to the Mets, if he's been traded - that's confirmed by multiple media outlets. Cameron and Huff are in their respective lineups, and there are rumors that Manny refused to play.

Meanwhile, Fenway boos Manny, and gives Kapler a standing O. Good lord.

Why "good lord?" They were welcoming back a player who always hustled his butt off, showed respect toward the fans, and played the game well. The fans understood that he was hoping to become a starter somewhere when he left at the end of last season, and I don't think they begrudged him that one iota.

To me, it seemed booing Manny last night was as much about the attitude and lack of effort he's exhibited lately as any trade rumors: anyone who saw the second game in TB knows he dogged it down to first base in the tenth, and so far no one's come forward to refute the assertion that Manny declined to play yesterday--not even his good friend David Ortiz.

Some posts from SOSH, whose servers are being taxed:

"Gary Cohen says he's not in the park and nobody knows where he is.:

Who is Gary Cohen?

"Just read this on Royal Rooters:.
'Stark is saying he was taken out to cool things down in Boston.'"

"The radio guys say that Tito pulled him (for the best interests of the club and Manny) and will explain his decision following the game."

Oh, please. This is ridiculous.

Thank you Andrew.

Please please please please don't let Manny be a Met, please please please...

SoSHer:

"Remy now guessing Manny was late to park tonight and thus, sat down by Tito. God, I hope thats it."

Not sure why they wouldn't say that right away. And why was Manny in the original lineup (up to a few minutes before game time?) if he wasn't at the park?

Another SoSH report.

8:24 PM: "Mets announcers just said the Manny trade is not going to happen. The Red Sox asked for too much."

Andrew said...

Ok... so Manny just showed up on the field afer the game, smiling widely, in uniform, to congratulate teammates on the W.

Which leads me to ask what the #$%@# is going on.

Stark's latest on ESPN.com is that the D-Rays were demanding that both Hanley Ramirez and Jon Lester.

Yeah, that'll work. Fuck you, Lamar.

What's up with Tito on NESN post-game? SoSH is slow, so ... Anyone?

Tito basically said that he pulled Manny aide and asked him to sit out today to clear his head. He also said that, contrary towhat Lucchino earlier said, he sees no problems with Manny regarding privacy, and came minorly close to outright contradicting LL. After that PC, and after Manny came out on the field, I'm gtting more and more certain that a) Manny's not going anywhere, and b) like 75% f this whole contoversy was essentiall made up in a perfect stormbetween Lucchino, the media, and fans.

None of this makes any sense to me. Why would Tito come forward to the press (a couple times) about Manny wanting to sit out a game they "really needed him for" (against the McClung and the Devil Rays)...only to back off his comments? And Lucchino making a big deal about what others have called an offhanded comment about being traded?

I'm not usually a conspiracy theorist, but maybe they were contemplating trading him away, in a possibly a pretty crappy trade to free up salary (before he became 10/5). And making him a little bit of a villain with the fans would make such a trade more palatable? Nomar's infamous Extra-Innings Sulk last year certainly saved them a large amount of grief (even though they were probably determined to trade him anyway), and maybe they were hoping for something similar.

Farfetched, I know. I'm just very confused about this whole thing.

Thanks, Andrew.

From SoSH:

21st Century Sox: "Could Tito look any more uncomfortable in that interview? The "best time" to chat with Manny was 5 minutes before game time? Is he kidding? I liked the staring down at the floor through much of it, very convincing."

Mugsys Jock: "Per CBS Sportsline, Manny was at the park, and in a pretty good mood, for a 10am workout... then left around 11am and came back "in the afternoon"."

Bucknahs Bum Ankle: "Manny to sit again tomorrow. Scheduled to start again Tuesday against the Royals. This is bizarre. I only heard the interview on the radio, but I agree Tito didn't sound very convincing. Staring at the floor certainly is an indication that someone isn't being forthright."

Sounds like this Q&A with Tito raised more questions than it answered.

NY radio call shows are pushing the deal-- Mets fans are drooling. But, a couple of days ago the press was saying that Manny was uncomfortable with the lack of privacy in the Boston market...... how is that gonna get better if he's the new savior of the Mets?? Now at least he's one of the guys... lotsa other talent and idiots to share the lime-light with. What's it really about???

One word Manny. Prozac.

It's Sunday morning and the sun did rise today...Manny is still a member of the team, and will be (my humble opinion) tomorrow morning at this time too. I do agree that last night's game had a bizarre atmosphere, to say the least, with Boomer coming through again.
