Beckett (6-4-1-2-8, 113) pockets his #20 win - Ortiz (4 RBI, 3 hits) and Lowell hit back-to-back dongs in the ninth -- Varitek bopped a solo dong in the eighth -- Ellsbury and Pedroia each scored twice -- and Gagne looked great with a 1-2-3 ninth inning in which his pitch speed ranged from 68 to 95. (box)
The Yankees scored four times in the bottom of the ninth to erase a 4-0 Blue Jays lead, but then lost when Gregg Zaun hit a solo dong in the 14th inning.
2.5 GA. Magic #: 7.
(And the Tigers crept closer to New York in the WC race (4.5 GB).)

Josh Beckett (3.20, 142 ERA+) / Scott Kazmir (3.54, 130 ERA+)
Two excellent pitching match-ups tonight, with Halladay/Wang in New York, also at 7 PM.
The big question: Can (or Will) the battling Blue Jays, now officially eliminated from the wild card race, roll over for the Yankees? On their off-day yesterday, the team announced Vernon Wells is done for the season and will have shoulder surgery. Since Wells struggled to keep his OBP above .300 since mid-June (and he slugged .202 over the last 28 days), his absence may actually help Toronto's chances for victory. But still -- Eff you, Ricciardi.

Toronto will be giving the MFY their best on the mound this weekend+: Halladay, Marcum, McGowan and Burnett.
(vs. Wang, Kennedy, Fat Billy and Hughes)
I can't believe we see Red Dot again. At least NYY sees him too.
win. tonight. #20. forza
First, the new D-Rays (excuse me, Rays) uniforms:
http://sportswrap.berecruited.com/2007/09/21/new-tampa-bay-devil-rays-logo-uniform-tampa-bay-devils-rays-to-become-tampa-bay-rays/
After the loss on Wednesday (or, rather, during it), I was so mad at the Red Sox that in a race, I ran as angry as I can and set a personal best.
Let's beat the crap out of the Devil Rays, ok?
Enjoy the game tonight, folks. I will be otherwise occupied, hoping that my atoning for my various sins will help the team. Not that I think there is ANY connection, but one can always hope. I hope Beckett cruises to number 20 and that the sleepy bats wake up. Have fun!
I can't believe we see Red Dot again. At least NYY sees him too.
Reall quick comment before I head home and try to get a few hours of sleep before the 2nd job.
This will be the sixth time that Red Dot pitches vs the Sox this year - he has won one, his last one.
What I want to see is the MFBJ's play the MFY's like they just played us. Chances of that happening slim and none.
Amy, have fun atoning. (Kidding.) When I was still observant, I prayed like mad on Yom Kippur. I was always afraid I'd forget something and not get the nod.
Have a great holiday and we'll see you when you return.
Westcoastsox, congratulations on finding a silver lining in a dismal week!
Theo speaks.
Game threads are back at JoS!
That = win.
Lügo: "This is where the team has to pull together. From now on, you're going to see who's who. This is the time you see who is who -- right now. That's it."
Ian Browne, redsox.com: "From a pure psychological standpoint, Friday just might wind up being the biggest game the Red Sox have played to date in '07."
We've got Lineups!
Red Sox:
1. Jacoby Ellsbury, LF
2. Dustin Pedroia, 2B
3. David Ortiz, DH
4. Mike Lowell, 3B
5. Bobby Kielty, RF
6. Jason Varitek, C
7. Coco Crisp, CF
8. Julio Lugo, SS
9. Eric Hinske, 1B
Tampa Bay:
1. Akinori Iwamura, 3B
2. Greg Norton, DH
3. Carlos Pena, 1B
4. BJ Upton, CF
5. Delmon Young, RF
6. Jonny Gomes, LF
7. Dioner Navarro, C
8. Jorge Velandia, 2B
9. Josh Wilson, SS
Bobby Kielty is 8 for 19 against Kazmir with 2 dongs.
I am so psyched for tonight's game. I'm convinced we're going widen our lead by a full game.
"oh let the sun beat down upon my face" is going for his 14th win, which would tie a Devil Rays record with--Rolando Arrojo! Can you believe that man holds a record?
"Bobby Kielty is 8 for 19 against Kazmir with 2 dongs."
Okay, this might take a lot of research if somebody wants to do it. I'm never a fan of placing a non-starter into the lineup based on how he does against a pitcher for this reason: Maybe all his hits were either as a pinch-hitter, or at the very least, when he was a regular in some other team's lineup. A guy going in knowing he's there strictly because he's fared well against that night's pitcher is a different guy than the one who snuck in a few hits against him in the past. And maybe if the pitcher sees the guy 4 times in a game, he does better against him.
So if anyone wants to look up the way average hitters who hit way above their average against great pitchers do against them as pinch hitters vs. how they do in games where they face them 4 times, go ahead.
So I'm glad Ortiz is in the lineup against Kazmir. I'd rather have him in the lineup than not. And Kielty, I'd have just kept him ready on the bench, knowing he's perfectly capable of hitting Kazmir, as opposed to altering our lineup because of it.
Fuck Yeah!
I can't believe we see Red Dot again. At least NYY sees him too.
Unless they decide to end his season after tonight. They have already done that to James Shields (215 IP, 3.85 ERA). It's his first MLB season.
Red Dot has 195.2 IP coming into tonight's games and I think has thrown more pitches than any other pitcher in MLB this year.
Jere, it doesn't look like any of his PAs against the Dot were as a PH.
1-for-6 vs Kaz with the Sox this year.
A hitter's stats against a certain pitcher are all but meaningless.
Anything under 50 PAs is a small sample size and even with 51-100 AB (which would cover many years seasons in which both hitter and pitcher could change their ways of doing their jobs), luck can cause wild fluctuations -- a shitty .200 hitter could easily hit .450 against a light-out ace based solely on luck and random chance.
"a small sample size "
Exactly why we shouldn't be basing our starting lineup on stuff like this. If our lineup can be changed because a guy is like 4-9 against somebody, that's wrong to me.
And besides PH at bats, I'm just saying, a guy starts racking up totals on another guy not because they specifically put him in to face that guy. Once they start doing that, I'm guessing the guy starts coming down to Earth in most cases.
I'm watching Seinfeld, the Chinese Restaurant episode. I wish someone had dared me to eat off someone's plate while waiting for a table, when I was much younger. I might have done it and had a great story from it.
What a great episode this is. Almost as good as my all-time fave, the Parking Garage.
Jere, that's the right idea re Kielty and Ortiz vs Kazmir. Tiny sample size - meaningless. You go with the better hitter, period.
Lord Lynch has had a tiring week, waking up to the perennial bad news, and getting into work with a serious mood, while the Yankee beloved tries not to gloat.
I am off to bed soon, and the news had better not be bad, or i'm holding this site responsible.
Sweet Dreams, Lord L. We'll do what we can.
(Redsock and I were at all three games in Toronto. It was brutal.)
Brutal indeed, L. I am in despair at their performance.
Is there any sign of Manny?
No sign of Manny yet, but don't despair. Go back a few posts for some reassurance.
GRRRRRR!!!!!!!! WHY IS TINA TALKING TO GERBIL ABOUT 1978?!?!?!?!?!?!
Game threads are back at JoS!
That = win.
hey now!
The way I see it:
redsock goes to see the Red Sox = Loss
lol
Lets get this thing going tonite guys!!
It's Migraine Vision for me via MLBTV. Boo.
I've got 4 DVD games through this morning to watch some time this week, including Ortiz's walk off, the win against Toronto a couple of weeks ago, and a couple of games against Baltimore.
At least we don't lose the games I get!
I wore different kinds of t-shirts, went with contacts after glasses, wore a different Sox hat. Couldn't mojo a win. Sorry.
GRRRRRR!!!!!!!! WHY IS TINA TALKING TO GERBIL ABOUT 1978?!?!?!?!?!?!
Ahh, sweet, sweet Migraine Vision.
Anangram o' the night:
Devil Rays = Die Rays LV
LBJ! LBJ! Four more hits! Four more hits!
Decent start by LBJ it seems.
Lyndon Being Lyndon!
redsock goes to see the Red Sox = Loss
Ish said the same thing. :)
Redsock and I still have a winning record at Toronto this season - 5-4.
BUNT?
BUNT?
FUCK YOU TITO.
FUCK YOU FUCK YOU FUCK YOU
DO NOT GIVE AWAY OUTS, YOU MORON
Yeah baby!! Ellsbury "scampering" home!
A lead! We have a lead!
Speed kills.
in the first fucking inning? we christ alfuckingmighty.
lotta cap-locks tonight
Ok, yet again I can retire, safe in the knowledge I've bestowed upon you a lead - please do your best to keep it this time.
Best of British luck to the Sox.
You can trust us, LL. No problems.
Ah, I finally get to watch a game tonight. And it should be a good one, although I'm willing to pass on the pitchers' duel and just clobber Kazmir.
although I'm willing to pass on the pitchers' duel and just clobber Kazmir.
god yes. my nerves can't take a low scoring game right now. clobber sounds good.
Josh: Do not walk a DH that is batting .230.
To tell the truth, I spent about a minute looking for le mot juste ... Glad you like my final choice.
"Josh: Do not walk a DH that is batting .230."
Or the next guy...
damn! tied already.
Tor: 0
NY: 0
34 pitches for JB.
Looks like the jays blew an opportunity.
What's with Beckett and the first inning? Does he have a really rough time in the 1st often, or is that just how it seems?
Does he have a really rough time in the 1st often, or is that just how it seems?
Batters in 1st this year: .224/.308/.402.
Batters do better than that against him in the 3rd and 4th and have the same OPS in the 5th.
Go down about 2/3 this page.
these Es are fun
i wonder if everyone is celebrating yom kippur tonight...
Well, checked up on it a little bit... it is his worst inning of the first 6 ones, and the 7, 8, and 9th are pretty small samples. But it's not really bad (116 OPS+ against). Hmmm...
Tor: 00
NYY: 00
i hate rooting for toronto even temporarily, since it will make their stupid fans so happy. but such is a pennant race.
Hey, I was just on that page! Surprised I didn't run into you there (:
And about Yom Kippur- technically I should be, but as much as I like the idea of the day (and Yom Kippur in my hometown is one of the most special days I've seen), I don't 'celebrate' it when I'm abroad.
"And about Yom Kippur- technically I should be, but as much as I like the idea of the day (and Yom Kippur in my hometown is one of the most special days I've seen), I don't 'celebrate' it when I'm abroad."
I "should" be as I am Jewish, but I don't observe anymore (out of choice, not laziness). Yom Kippur was always my absolute least favourite holiday. I miss Passover, but I do not miss The Day of Atonement.
May I ask where is your hometown that makes it so special?
"And about Yom Kippur- technically I should be, but as much..."
I want to correct myself. I'm a non-believing Jew- I shouldn't be anything.
And about the 1st inning- is there anywhere you can check on pitch count by innings? Because I just remember him having a lot of very long firsts.
Just send Manny home if he's not gonna play.
I also identify myself as Jewish atheist, or an atheist Jew. Are you our Israeli poster? I remember there is someone Israeli here, but can't place who it is...?
i hate rooting for toronto even temporarily, since it will make their stupid fans so happy. but such is a pennant race.
the way that tool behind us was acting, if the jays win, it's good for us, so he probably wants his team to lose. (not that he's a real fan)
Beckett now on pace to go 9 and throw 230 pitches.
Heh, that "should" really did stand out, I guess... I live in Jerusalem. On Yom Kippur, there are no cars anywhere (besides emergency vehicles), everyone's walking on the streets and roads, everyone's out (or at least it feels that way)... all the kids go biking and rollerblading on the city's main roads... just a special atmosphere.
the way that tool behind us was acting, if the jays win, it's good for us, so he probably wants his team to lose. (not that he's a real fan)
and just as i read this, hinske gets hit, which would please the toronto masses greatly.
god, they were disgusting.
****
LBJ is the red sox player of the week. :)
And about the 1st inning- is there anywhere you can check on pitch count by innings?
I don't know. You could go to his game log and look at the pbp for each start. Pitches per batter is listed.
Ofer, that sounds so nice.
I haven't been to Israel yet, but I very much want to go.
I mean it's listed in the pbp under the box score besides each batter and his result.
Hey, how many at-bats would make you not be eligible for RoY next year?
"Heh, that "should" really did stand out, I guess..."
No, it wasn't that. You said it was a special day in your hometown, so I'm thinking, what hometown could YK be a special day in... could only be in Israel, I think.
Everyone has the day off in NYC, but no one would call it a special day. :)
You should... it's a beautiful, interesting and strange place. A little bit of everything, for better or for worse.
Tiz hit!!! And we have the lead again. Nice.
The Mighty Ortiz!!
Yes! Let the clobbering begin!
Rookie: Must have less than 130 AB or less than 50 IP or less than 45 on MLB roster.
Lyndon at 84 AB as of right now.
Could he get 46 AB in the next 9 games? That's 5 per game. Possible, but unlikely.
Ofer, I fully intend to. I live to travel, my must-see list is very long, but I will certainly get to Jerusalem one day.
Tor: 000 0
NYY: 000
"I mean it's listed in the pbp under the box score besides each batter and his result."
Guess I'll do it after the game. It's never good to divide your concentration in too many directions at the same time. The game's the top priority right now.
2 k's for Lowell tonite not withstanding, I'd LOVE to hear a big "M V P" chant for him at Fenway next week.
3-1!!! Clobber time :)
3-1
fuck yeah.
I can't check the NYY/Tor score, so please post folks.
clobber clobber clobber
NYY/TOR no score just beginning Top 5
I can't check the NYY/Tor score, so please post folks.
I have been. :>)
"2 k's for Lowell tonite not withstanding, I'd LOVE to hear a big "M V P" chant for him at Fenway next week."
that would be great. he's been our mvp for sure.
captain teflon gets on base!
WTG, Captain!!!

allan, you know it's hard for me to see your posts. :)
come on ococ...
Kazmir's unravelling...
Awww c'mon coco! Jeez...
Was that bad enough to be SASAHE?
Tor: 000 0 - 0 3 1
NYY: 000 0 - 0 2 1
Damon has the MFY error.
sasahe, yes, i think so
don/jerry just said that kapler wants to play next year. let's hope in portland or lowell.
don & jerry must be trying to keep us all loose. they're chatting like it's a 10 run lead.
remy says he wants the red sox to build up a huge lead b/c he has a lot of shit to talk about and give away.
Evil D. Rays.
How come Kazmir didn't know he got the third out last inning? Terrible job. Wish we hadn't left 'em loaded, but I'm happy with 3-1 us.
remy says he wants the red sox to build up a huge lead b/c he has a lot of shit to talk about and give away.
so we all want a tie game now? ... a rout and the mute button would be better, i suppose.
rout plus mute sounds great - except i can mute while i'm modding. i'll put up w/ remy's in-game ads for a 10 run lead.
MLB.tv's acting strange. I had the Rays' feed, then NESN for a half inning, and then the Rays' feed again.
Beckett's looking good this inning.
liver days
sliver day
silver day
re: silva. DY!
jere's in anagram world. keep em coming.
maybe mlb.tv is censoring this ridiculous auction the rays are running during the game.
what are they auctioning, and why?
"slide/vary"

nice inside 1-2 pitch for the K on gomes -- ump was dozing.
Wow... it's only been 3 innings.

last one (maybe): D.I.Y. Ravels
They're auctioning a bullpen session with James Shields, BP with Carlos Pena, a couple of other things, and... the Ted Williams Experience. Guess that's what you do when you don't have a history of your own.
Auction:
1.Pitchng Lessons with James Shields
2. Batting Practice w/ Carlos Pena
3. Ted Williams Experience
4. International Baseball Experience
5. Be a Star for a Day
Ted Williams Experience includes autographed ball, private tour of Hitters Hall of Fame Museum, 2 tix to rays-sox game at tropicana field, 2 tix to rays-sox game in fenway on field for bp, includes air and hotel - Current Bid $2700
I love the anagram site! That's where I found out that I'm 'a conformer'.
ok im here.
i hope beckettc can get some easy innings.
pitchers duel in the bronx.
Ofer, I don't think Jere uses an anagram site. He's a scrabble whiz, like the Bot.
My best Red Sox anagram:
David Ortiz, diva or ditz?
So where is the money from the auction going?
A potential murderer's December trip:
Slay drive.
Going bottom six in NY.
Yeah, I hope nobody thinks I'm getting these anagrams from anywhere but my brain.
The only wordy thing better than anagrams are palindromes. They're my fave. I can never think of them on my own, tho.
Of course, the X in Red Sox makes pretty much every interesting anagram about either sex or hexes... hmmm...
big brothers & big sisters and the rays foundation
i guess that's what the world is. sex or hexes.
whatever that means :)
i like doing anagrams of players' names. we did that once here, it was very funny.
I'm an onomatopoeia guy, myself... (:
this guy velandia sounds like a kind of cheese. i'm already thinking of him as el queso.
I'm an onomatopoeia guy, myself

hey all. a while back my cable suddenly gave out. I turned on my laptop, but for some reason GDGD won't pop up for me...so I was w/o a game. Emma and I played a coupla of hot-action rounds of Uno. Now we have TV, but I missed all the crazy action.
Emma wants to play another game. I can do any 2 of 1) watch the game on TV 2) catch up on this thread and 3) play uno.....so I'll see ya later.
rock!
nice 1-2-3 inning for josh who has no nickname.
JB PC: 34-17-26 15 = 92
Damn. I guess he'll give us 5.
have fun, nick. say hi to emma for us. :)
That BP with Pena (which sounds cool) is for 4 people -- ages 10-18. Adults say: Boo!
fuck yeah!
1st & 3rd for the jays, no outs!
lets go boys lets get kazmir outta the game!
Nick, Draw Two for me.
1st and 3rd for Jays. 0 out
I love it when Pedroia swings around himself. He almost swings himself into the catcher.
flo SAFE!!!
Papi beats it out! That was the Willie Mays Hayes first swing of the season hit!
papi w/ the wheels!
Yeah, Papi hustle! Sort of...
1-0 Jays!
Toronto scores! 1-0
I bet Pedroia swung all the way over the bar at the swingset when he was little.
Yankees losing 2-0 in the bronx as passedballa drops the throw from Abreu.
2-0??? Cool!
2-0 Jays
2-0 toronto

somebody had to say it!
jays hitters finding their strokes vs wang?
either nick is caught in some kind of time warp, or blogger is being strange!
Kielty working on keeping his small sample size against Kazmir small... 2BB, only one AB
My least favorite Sox up to bat with bases loaded.
C'mon Tek!
A nice dong by the Jays would cap off the rally.
what a fucking horrid at bat by tek!
jesus the guys is struggling and you swing at the first two pitches.....ugh
emma just went to bed. we just had more +2s and +4 wilds than I've seen in ages. crazy games.
speaking of which...c'mon oCoC!
remy: they do that to jason from both sides of the plate, try to climb that ladder and go after him w/ a fast ball
jos: SASAHE
Varitek just looks bad... no more, no less- just bad.
fucking tek. high shit on 0-2 -- but he fouls it off. kazmir not fooled. right back with the high shit -- and whiff!
throw some high shit to tek is like throwing a curve to wmp.
instant K.
jays hitters finding their strokes vs wang?
I just happened to catch Kay opening the 7th with - "opposing batters vs wang in innings 7-9. .341 BA"
BBA 1-6 in the low to mid .200's.
Nick, Draw Four for me.
i think tek looks way worse than bad.
Fucking Kazmir... can't he just roll over and let us run over him?
fuckafuckingduckfucker.
Another set of bases left loaded. At least we've got a 2-run lead. In each game.
remy: they do that to jason from both sides of the plate, try to climb that ladder and go after him w/ a fast ball
Expert analysis, Jerry. Thanks for showing us the game inside the game.
it feels like it's been a long time since we had a lead while the yankees were behind. maybe it hasn't been as long, but it sure feels that way.

way to stay with him, joe! (thumbs up)
halladay at 65 pitches thru 6!
I've always like Uno. I want to play it more often than emma does. When she was young she'd want to play candyland (which makes my brain rot) and I'd be "uno, uno, uno".
whooofuck, LBJ!
WOW!!
LBJ!!!!
THAT'S MY BOY!!!!!
Another play way better than Jeter's catch, but we'll still see Jeter's catch a million times for every one time we see that one.
do we love that kid or what??
Lyndon, be careful! Getting injured there would've been stupid.
But... Fuck yeah! That was great!
fuck - i missed it.
Jere, I KNEW you would say that. Jesus.
who do you love?
just saw a rpelay!!
Maybe if Jacoby had caught the ball first, THEN dove into the chairs (and played in NY, had paralyzing eyes), he'd get the credit he's due for it.
Maybe if Jacoby had caught the ball first, THEN dove into the chairs (and played in NY, had paralyzing eyes), he'd get the credit he's due for it.
He's already more attractive than Jeter ever was. And this catch was in September -- not in some meaningless mid-summer game.
And it's CALM EYES. CALM!!!!
Det 5, KC 4 (7th)
Not Dead Yet!
surprising they hung onto that ball.
Hey, yet another catch better than Jeter's! Josh Wilson, now those are some calm eyes. Calm.
Yep... the Jeterrific Calm-Eyed choco bunny... can't beat that.
ugly play and sucks to us, but congrats to wilson for salvaging that.
the Jeterrific Calm-Eyed choco bunny...
One of FJM's finest moments.
2-0 Toronto through 7.
choc. rain pitching for the yanks
Halladay at 82 pitches, BTW.
Bye bye Wang...and the Cy Young Award takes one step closer towards Becks, the best of what pitchers do best.
just added a pesky and williams autographed photo and boggs autographed ball to williams package - 4k
