G101: Red Sox 4, Mariners 0

Red Sox - 000 020 020 - 4 11 0
Mariners - 000 000 000 - 0 8 0
Lester, working on 12 days rest, was superb (7.1-8-0-0-6, 103), throwing only 60 pitches (and 48 strikes!) through the first six innings. His sinker was outstanding.

After allowing two singles to start the eighth, Lester got a line out before another single banged off his shin to load the bases. Jonathan Papelbon came in and threw two pitches, getting Raul Ibanez to ground into an inning-ending 6-4-3 double play. Bot then pitched a perfect ninth: 6-3, 3U, L4.

Boston got on the board in the fifth when Coco Crisp walked with one out and Jason Varitek lined a home run to left (not a typo!). Jed Lowrie's bases-loaded single brought home two insurance runs in the eighth.

In addition to his dong, Varitek singled and walked, Lowrie singled twice and walked, Crisp singled and walked three times, Manny Ramirez singled three times, and Kevin Youkilis singled, walked and was HBP.

The 6-7-8-9 spots in the Sox order reached base 13 times in 19 opportunities -- and scored and drove in all four runs.

The Rays two-hit the Athletics 2-0 and the Yankees routed the Twins 12-4. So the standings remain the same: Boston 1.5 GB, New York 4.5 GB.

***

Jon Lester (3.38, 128 ERA+) / Jarrod Washburn (4.83, 82 ERA+)

After a string of four superb starts, Lester has experienced problems in two of his last three outings:
                 IP H R ER BB K PIT
Jun 5 TBR W 6.1 8 1 1 0 5 109
Jun 12 BAL W 7 7 2 2 1 3 101
Jun 17 @PHI W 7 6 0 0 1 5 99
Jun 22 STL W 7.1 9 2 2 1 3 101
Jun 28 @HOU L 5 9 6 6 0 3 76
Jul 3 @NYY W 9 5 0 0 2 8 105
Jul 8 MIN W 7.1 9 5 5 3 6 117
We need a win.

Also: A's/Rays and Twins/Yankees (4.5 GB), both at 7 PM

Torn labrum in Dumbo's right shoulder. Needs surgery now so he's ready for 2009.

Are the Chokers really gonna stay with Jose Molina (.215/.255/.297, OPS+ 48), whose "hitting" makes Tek's bat look like Piazza's in his prime?

this place is king anyway, i just used to get a kick out of those miserable fucks...
tonight we must win, as the yanks and rays are putting a hurtin' on their opposing teams.

meanwhile people are saying jokes about mike lowell having one testicle, and wishing cancer upon people,

On Saturday on the bus from the hotel to the wedding, we chatted with a guy who is a lifelong Orioles fan. (And who may sweat more than Kevin Youkilis.)

This guy mentioned steroids, and Clemens's name came up. Allan expressed a little of his hatred for Fat Billy, said he is enjoying watching the spectacle "in a sadistic way".

I think Allan may heard himself from the outside and maybe realized the extent of his obsession. Maybe - just maybe - was a little embarrassed.

One of those "I say this on the internet but do I want to say this in person to a stranger" kind of things.

Redsock?

So basically this guy sucks. I'm waiting for a couple of dongs.

No problem. We can right this ship with Lester guiding the way.

"[Francona] reiterated that he will not start hitting for Jason Varitek, who is in the worst slump of his life."

Now, honestly: how stupid is THAT? This is a manager who puts in an inferior fielder as a late-inning defensive replacement for a shortstop with superior range and arm in a fielding slump, but he won't pinch-hit for an aging catcher who hasn't hit all that much for the past two years and is really stinking up the joint now?

I put this in the same category as last season's "Eric Gagne is going to be very important to this team down the stretch" mantra as he stunk game after game.

Oh: the category is: Francona At His Worst.

WTF? That doesn't happen here.

Obama is gung-ho to continue (and perhaps expand) the US's on-going war crimes in the Middle East.

I prefer Tito.

Jack, I just mentioned that because it feels like every time you write a paragraph in here, half the internet gets on to disagree with you.

I'll get on that bandwagon.

I think they set the bar too high. So, I just don't bother with it. There's a difference between screening for stupid people and screening and weeding out only the special people. But, that's their thing. So I don't deal with it. Not worth my time, and I don't feel I need to impress anyone just to be given a membership.

(Note: I'm sure Boggs was right, but I just hate him so much, I like to SAY that he was full of shit, even when it might not be true.)

Rob said...

Why does anybody care if Posada is on the DL? He was too much of a liability behind the plate with the piece of driftwood attached to his body. His hitting wasn't so good that he'll be truly missed from the lineup, either.

I see a little Doc Scurlock in Wasburn.....

Jere said...

On my comments about racists. I just mean that many of the people who want Manny off the team are just racist--so whenever he does something good, those people are stuck not knowing if they wanna keep him despite his "antics" or dump him despite the fact that he wins us World Series all the freakin time.

My body runs a fishing boat in the Keys and had Boggs on board one day for some charity deal....said he was a booze bag drank a 30-pack and then some on the boat and made a total fool of himself at the dinner

Rob said...

Jose Molina vs. Kevin Cash.

Cash seems to be out-hitting Molina, though.

Molina's had more playing time, though. You give Cash as many AB's as Molina and he'd come back down to earth.

Jere said...

9casey: Have you heard the tales of Boggs and his beers in his playing days?

Boy, they started that inning quickly. TV and radio both barely got back in time for the first pitch. I hate that.

Not really... I'm just glad I can tolerate it. Makes things easier, I guess.

2 more LOB.

Jere said...

ish: I wasn't really asking. I was attempting a "gluten for punishment" joke.

Benjamin said...

So no seitan? How sad.

Patrick said...

Still, I appreciate it.

Jere said...

So when Patrick goes to hell, he gets no seitan, but he gluten for punishment?

Rob said...

ish: I wasn't really asking. I was attempting a "gluten for punishment" joke.

Gotcha.

Jere said...

i should just delete that one. or put in the word I left out. And then delete it.

Jere said...

my problem was not just saying "Gluten for pun, ish meant?" in the first place. Is this why SoSH doesn't like me?

allan said...

"Dice walks a lot of guys? Huh, never noticed that."

allan said...

Cow tongue tacos!

Patrick said...

For too many reasons, I really hate these west coast trips.

Jere said...

Here's where CHB says "Ralph Nadar." I can't believe they still haven't fixed it. No, I can.

I was thinking maybe CHB was making a joke about the sweep being the low point of the season, but that would be "nadir".

So he's just an idiot.

From Ernie Shore Field actually, where I watched a really great ballgame that had Son of Fat Billy featured in a VERY prominent way.

Oh yeah, I guess I should change that.
That's my niece. She was here last night when I finally figured out how to get to the pictures in my camera to pull out an avatar. I took the shot, posted it, and introduced her to the gang at Ish's blog. She was quite flattered by the attention she got.

Rob said...

Fantastic play!

SoSock said...

Actually, a foul tip, by definition, is a tipped ball that goes directly into the glove and is caught. It is still a live ball. If it is not caught it's just a foul and it's a dead ball.
Not to nitpik or anything.

He used the force to get that ball!

Apparently NOT, based on the comments!

Boneless or no?

There's an amazing wings place in the area here called Wings Your Way. Boneless wings dipped in choice of sauce... Five levels of Buffalo... Then there's cajun, teriyaki, honey BBQ, BBQ, honey mustard BBQ, chipotle BBQ, sweet & sour, thai peanut, mango habanero, chili lime.
