Reporters were let into the clubhouse 20 minutes later than usual. No lineups posted, yet. Manny Ramirez is listed in his normal hitting group.
Stay tuned.

Steve Buckley" sounds more over-the-top on Manny than CHB, amazingly. He says the Red Sox should just "throw him out on his arse."

This does beg the question: What do you do with him? If there's been a sort of decision that Ramirez shouldn't play here anymore, and it's time to part company now, what do you do? Both knees get MRI'd, so that makes you think of trade... but where? And for whom? There's no way you just cut ties with him and DFA him mid-season.

Rhetorical questions, of course. None of us know. What I'd like to see, if they go the trade route, would be a guy like Matt Holliday. If Colorado won't be able to afford him after this year, but they still want to make a run at the hapless NL West, that might be a move. Who knows. That was just sticking in my head.

allan said...

I saw a bit o' Buckley at SoSH. He has out-CHBed the CHB.

I assume they they'd live with him and then decline the option, which I think is for both years 2009-2010. That really seems unlikely. But would they trade him? That seems more unlikely.

I know they don't run the team according to fan sentiment (thank god), but that would be a tough sell with Ortiz out and now back and the fans ready to start rocking the rest of ther way.

What's going on?

Something or nothing.

One of those.

Joe Grav said...

I have to admit that I've been woefully out of the Sox loop during the Navs season. The best I've been able to do is GDGD/ illegal web stream that I can peek at for a little while during the game.

And my checking of Sox news sources has plummeted.

All I know is, some crazy shizzle is going down with Manny, and I don't like it...

Joe Grav said...

My spidey-senses tell me that this is the day we see another one of those team-unifying brawls.

allan said...

AB:
Manny Ramirez just walked through the clubhouse. He didn't stop to talk to reporters, but without being asked a question, the Sox left fielder addressed a group of media members on his way by.
"Don't worry about it," Ramirez said. "I'm not going to talk. I'm going to play. That's it."
Ramirez, penciled into this afternoon's lineup, was then asked if he would definitely be playing today.
"Check the lineup," he said. "I'm in the lineup."

Hmmmmm. If Maz knows something, he ought to report it.

I agree. It's one thing to know things and not say it, but it's another thing to tell people you know something and then not say it.

Don't beat around the bush. If you aren't supposed to report something, don't let on that you know something that you can't report. Just stick it in the vault.

Jack Marshall said...

Maz is simply being consistent with typical journalistic "ethics." Heaven forbid that the public have the whole story to make an informed judgement.

Yeah. It's both

Isn't it funny/odd how no one in the media is taking the same attitude towards the front office?

SoSHer SoxFanSince57:
Two months ago Manny was talking about ending his career here. Two weeks ago he's blasting ownership and talking about being lied to. How does one propose to know, then, what it is that is in Manny's heart and mind?
Well I disagree that we can't reserve judgment. Based on our history with Manny, many are concluding the worst. So be it, but that conjecture doesn't make them right or their leap of faith correct.
Manny did say that he wanted to retire in a Red Sox uniform and then later he accused the FO of lying to him. If that were the case, then most of us would be pretty pissed if we were in similar circumstances. However, it is still a big leap for me to say that based on the conflict around his contract Manny purposefully "tanked". Just for the sake of speculation (which is what we are doing) what if the FO did lie to Manny? While he is never justified in tanking, it would be understandable to say that he is rightly angry.
While I don't accuse the FO of anything here, I could spin a pretty nasty story line about them based on some of their history with Manny, Pedro, Nomar, Theo etc... IMO, the FO is not as pure as driven snow. They are completely capable of unleashing the dogs when it suits their purposes. There have been a lot of innuendos attributed to the FO over the past week. Doesn't anyone here question their motives/intentions? I am asking myself why the FO hasn't confirmed or denied the numerous reports of them libeling Manny. Their reported accusations are destroying Manny's honor. If they believe it then they should get off their fucking hands and man-up with the accusations/beliefs rather than feeding them to the press and hiding in their offices. Hey Manny could have done all this shit. And if I really thought he did and if I were the CEO I would have the balls to make my thinking/feeling very, very public.

AB, 2:00 PM:
Ramirez was among the Sox who took BP on the field, and seems to be in quite the good mood today. He was smiling as he walked through the clubhouse with his son earlier this afternoon.

Jack Marshall said...

Redsock---I agree 100% with your comments about the ownership. It is EXTREMELY likely that some of them slam Manny behind his back or under the radar, and they are playing with fire if they are doing so. These guys are used to calling the shots, and the fact that stars like Manny have them by the short hairs drives them nuts. So they (I think) get even with innuendo and leaks.

But it never pays to get in a pissing contest with the boss. This is why I now run my own business. Unfortunately, baseball players need a team to play on.

Surprising to still see Francisco Liriano in the minors. 9-0 for AAA and a 0.29 ERA in his last five starts. Call him up already! You're in a playoff race, Minnesota.

Except for an early Rays/Royals update in the game last night, I never read anyone mention the Rays during the game thread.

allan said...

I mean in general/media. The "rivalry is old" stuff is not generally posted here.

Jack Marshall said...

Speaking of the MFY---why is getting Nady a big deal?
He's not as good as Matsui. He can't catch. No gurantee that he'll hit as well in the AL, or under play-off pressure. Marte is a big pick-up, but I don't see this deal as fixing the core Yankee problems, at least when the unpire isn't on the take.

Rob said...

And, as I mentioned last night, they're going from the NL Central to the AL East. Marte could have problems adjusting to that.

allan said...

Passing this along

****

SoSHer Average Reds:

"The history with Youks pre-dates JtC.
I was at a game last season - June 1st, I believe - and the MFY pitcher threw at him early in the game and then another pitcher actually hit him ... in the 9th inning, when the MFYs were up 9-3. Youks went crazy and I was close enough to hear him screaming out at Proctor, who was pitching. So it would appear that JtC's actions last year were part of a larger thing the MFYs have going.
I don't know why they decided to go after Youks - maybe it's some sort of retaliation for all the perceived shots the Sox have taken against Jeter or others over the years. But there is clearly a pattern going here that they have decided to go headhunting. And other than the one time where Farnsworth threw behind Manny's head earlier this year, Youks has been their bitch.
What galls me about this is that the Sox have gone out of their way to avoid even the appearance of retaliation. Which leaves Youks utterly unprotected. So unless this changes, I think you can look forward to him being their bitch for a long time.

ANOTHER FEARLESS PREDICTION!

This is the high-water mark of the Yankee 2008 season. From now on, after 3, count 'em, three lucky, flukey, close wins over the Sox to keep them in the race, age, weak starting pitching and weak defense (and Sidney Ponson) will seek its own level.

(I make this prediction every year. eventually, I'll be correct.)

andy said...

Wow that is strange over in MiniSoda. No doubt he will be traded but they are undervaluing him by keeping him down. And come on, a pitcher with those stats will be the AAA Cy Young. Why would he be given that opportunity?

I hate the media who on one hand will fight and bitch and moan and cry and manipulate to get to the "truth" and on the other will keep said "truth" away from the people who pay their bills. What purpose would it serve to keep any info under wraps? Will the people stop showing up to games if they knew the FO was full of shit? Will they stop buying memorabilia if they knew Manny was full of shit? I wish the Media and the secret keepers would stop making the game about themselves. It is about the players and the field.

For what it's worth, my one friend (a smart, fair and rational guy) among the Sox beat-writers tells me 1) The team was prepared to suspend Manny if he didn't play today 2) they discussed suspending him last night 3) the MRI was considered a way to "call his bluff" 4) they may dangle him in trade but realize that as a 10-5 guy, Manny won't go, and finally 5) he is one big hit away from making all well, for the time being.

allan said...

Nady in LF and batting 7th for MFY

But if it WAS power, Manny wouldn't be at the mercy of management, and Barry Bonds wouldn't be waiting for the phone to ring.

Those examples only show there are people richer and more powerful than they are.

nixon33 said...

is today the day that nady becomes a true yankee?

allan said...

Suspending him for what? Alleegdly lying about his knee? Just not playing? An MRI would not tell them everything. I don't see how it could stand up.

Manny was in the lineup last night, took BP, knew he would be in LF and not DHing, and did not want to risk it. I presume he's thinking better to miss 1 game than 20.

If they had suspended him (how long?) and the union fought it, I could see their lack of true evidence blowing up in their face.

allan said...

is today the day that nady becomes a true yankee?

no, unless "becomes a true yankee" means getting his ass kicked wots-style in a brawl. ... or doing 'roids.

the other day on yankees classics they were showing the game where pedro hit soriano and jeter, 1st inning and back to back. awesome.

Jack Marshall said...

Right. Which all supports the "there is more going on here than we are being told." You can't suspend a player for sitting out two games with knee pain, unless he said, for example, "just for that, I think I'll say my kneee is hurting and won't play today." Even then, it doesn't prove his kneee doesn't hurt....I don't think it would stand up. This is why I think the situation is a little scary for the team...there are obviously ominous cross-currents of suspicion and bad feelings, a la the Carl Everett mess, the Jimy Williams-Duquette-Kerrigan crap, and the yearly personal controversies that dogged the pre- and Post- '67 Sox. Francona's biggest skill is in this realm, thank God. Let's hope he's up to the challenge.

How great would it be if Wake drilled Jeter?

Pow, right in the kisser.

I'd love to see his calm eyes get beaned.

Jose Molina is probably never run this much in one inning in his whole life.

allan said...

Mo-leaner running on Ococ's noodle.

Sad.

Joe Grav said...

A painful 59 MPH knuckleball in the ass

You know you have a below average arm when a Molina tags up at 2b on a ball to left center field and makes it to third.

A Molina!!!

Rob said...

I'm not so sure he gets beaned. On the list of intangibles includes dancing out of the way of pitches that hit the inside corner.

Here are my three sentences.

Baseball is great.
Watch the game.
Love your team.

laura k said...

Yeah, when a Molina runs on you, you are seriously embarrassed.

Joe Grav said...

how bout...

Yankees Suck. Yankees Suck. Yankees Suck.

Rob said...

So... Coco's noodle = a run.

Joe Grav said...

Fuckface

I've still never understood why the colors on FOX's broadcasts are all screwed up. NESN and ESPN don't have problems with the colors. The sun is, well, sun-colored. Green is... green. With FOX, the brightest, blue day looks murky.

I laugh at anyone watching FoxHD.

Hottest senior citizen on the planet.

What about Heidi's mom?

Happy birthday mick! 65 and in better shape than I'll ever be!

Probably better than any of us ever were or will be!

SoSock said...

I knew something was wrong. 20 minutes in a Yankees game with no new comments?
I was on the wrong post.
Nice 1st inning, though. Even if I was talking to myself.

I laugh at anyone watching FoxHD.

Looks amazing for me.

What about Heidi's mom?

ZING!

LOL

There's a little dog here!

My gut says Being'll hit a Pike shot.

laura k said...

Sosock! How funny.

SoSock said...

Oh, and I'm thinking seriously about a random political interjection here ;)
Yooooooooooooooooooooooooooook

Joe Grav said...

UGH. They had the game on in the team office, but someone changed the channel to some fucking movie. WTF? This is the office of a baseball team!

Whatever... I've got the web stream fired up.

laura k said...

Nix, what is your avatar? Safe for work?

tim said...

Joe Morgan has officially been fired.

As my avatar.

Rob said...

Youk!

Here's what great about the new lineup: Youk just had a base hit, and instead of Lowrie or Varitek coming up, it's TIZ!

laura k said...

Random political interjections are fine... when they're from the correct side of the dial.
