G106: Red Sox 9, Yankees 2

Yankees - 000 020 000 - 2 10 0
Red Sox - 311 202 00x - 9 15 0
Do you ever wonder when Manny Ramirez last felt pressure during a baseball game?

After his comments of a week ago and his knee problems evolved into a weekend media frenzy, playing before a national television audience for the second straight day, and with his team facing the possibility of being swept by the Yankees and falling into third place in the AL East, you might think Manny would be concerned about having a good game.

Maybe he was nervous. But once the rain cleared and the game began around 9 PM, it looked like Manny didn't have a care in the world. He made a superb catch deep in the left field corner, over by the side door, to end the top of the first inning, gliding over cool as a cucumber. In the home half, he doubled to right-center on the second pitch he saw, driving in the Red Sox's first run of the night. That RBI also gave him the distinction of having the most career RBIs of any Dominician Republic-born player.

Manny ripped another double in the third (and later scored), hit a bomb that was hauled in by Melky Cabrera at the very deepest point in the park, singled in a run in the sixth, and skied to right in the eighth.

He was ably assisted by -- going down the lineup card -- Dustin Pedroia (single, double, run, RBI), Kevin Youkilis (single, 2 runs), David Ortiz (single, home run, 2 runs, 3 RBI), Mike Lowell (single, 2 RBI), J.D. Drew (2 walks), Jason Varitek (double, RBI), Alex Cora (2 singles, run) and Jacoby Ellsbury (2 singles, double, run).

Most of the Sox had their way with Ponson (4-10-7-1-1, 77), as 12 of the 22 batters to face him reached base.

Lester (7-9-2-1-8, 113) was aces once again, stranding one runner in each of the first four innings, falling into trouble in the fifth by allowing four straight singles and a walk before recording an out, then retiring his last nine batters.

It was a perfect, feel-good night -- a welcome tonic before the Angels series that begins Monday night.

***

Sidney Ponson (4.02, 103 ERA+) / Jon Lester (3.20, 137 ERA+)

Ponson's four starts with the Yankees:

22.2 IP, 28 H, 11 BB, 11 K
4.37 ERA, 1.72 WHIP, .318/.412/.477

Boston has scored more than four runs only once in the last nine games (4-5). In that stretch -- dating back to July 13, the game before the break -- they are batting .248 and slugging .356.

The current Boston roster has hit .379/.452/.546 against Ponson in 199 PAs, with David Ortiz (.444/.563/.722) and Manny Ramirez (.404/.481/.511) leading the way.

A loss tonight will drop them to third place.

Win.

Also: Rays/Royals, 2 PM -- Update: Royals 6-1!

Hope not. If this is supposed to be the low point of the season we will need all the help we can get to really get us low in the mud.

redsock said...

FWIW -- Ken Rosenthal:

... several days before Ramirez missed two games, citing a knee problem, Red Sox players sensed from his demeanor that he was about to shut down.

Once Ramirez was out, he told some teammates that he might not play "until Kansas City" — a series that begins a week from Monday, after the Red Sox's current nine-game homestand. ...

Francona has had it. Epstein has had it. But at the end of the season, Red Sox ownership needs to show the guts to cut ties with Ramirez ...

We need Ace Lester on the mound tonight. To concede any more ground, especially playing at Fenway, would be pretty awful.

Time to show those punks in grey who the defending World Champions are.

Also:

SoSHer SoxFanSince57 throws out the idea that possible discussions over Manny's options has led to what he thinks are not "typical Manny-being-Manny moments":
"Did the FO fail in its goal/responsibility to manage the negotiations in a way that kept their temperamental star on the straight and narrow? Has this shit storm all happened because the FO botched their handling of the negotiations? Did they actually say something that a Manny-type player would predictably interpret as a promise/offer and then withdrew it? Why did Manny call the FO liars? Did he make that up or did he feel there was an understanding that the FO reneged on? ...
Just to throw a log on the fire and to be completely unfair--what if, just what if the FO told Manny or let Manny believe that they would pick up his option at the '08 ASB if his performance met certain yardsticks--or something to this effect? Clearly Manny feels that the FO has not lived up to its word. We certainly do not know if that is the case and I am not accusing them of any such thing. But what I am raising is the possibility that the FO FUCKED UP their communications with Manny. (I wonder why he switched agents?) Manny can be a petulant child--we all know that. But don't we also "know" that this FO can fuck up negotiations with Hispanic players?"

******************

Then he added:
"I agree that the likelihood there was a discussion about extending his contract at the ASB is very remote. ... My central point was that Manny's recent behaviors are out of the norm and that something occured during the negotiations with the FO that caused Manny to wander off the reservation.
2) I was not "laying this on the FO" per se. I was saying that the "cause" was probably something that happened in the negotiations. And I was saying that BOTH side probably share in the blame here and that "laying" all the blame on Manny is unfair.
I see no other reasonable explanation as to what has caused this storm. IMO, this is not a Manny-being-Manny moment. Something has caused Manny to get a burr up his ass. And based on my interpretation of past negotiations handled by this FO, I am very willing to speculate that the contract discussions exploded. IMO, the management of any company must keep the negotiating environment calm and productive."

******************

And:
"... there is really no objective evidence that he struck out on purpose or that he faked a knee injury.
No one has come out with a clear/hard accusation, not management, not Tito and not the other players. All we have is innuendos and slander in the media. I will stay on my side of this until someone on the team (FO, Tito or players) has the courage to call out Manny directly on this. IMO, it is all too convenient to claim that they can't go public for fear of fan reaction/outcry or for fear of upsetting the team. That horse is already out of the barn."

******************

I'd be very hesitant to put the Yook slap, the McCormick incident and this 3-day circus in the same category.

Also, I frown on comments that are long quotes from somewhere else, but (a) I liked what 57 wrote -- thought-provoking, if nothing else -- and (b) I can do what I want!

redsock said...

More, from Ed Hillel, in a reply to 57:

"I am also willing to speculate, but here's my take. Manny went to the FO, started talking extension, and the FO kindly told Manny that they would not entertain offers/excercise his option until after the season. For whatever reason, that wasn't good enough for Manny and he went to reporters with the story. I kind of get the feeling that the FO may have also told/indicated to Manny that they were the ones acting from a position of power here and that Manny may well be doing some things right now to flex his muscles. The problem from a PR and possibly clubhouse perspective is that Manny really has no moral ground to stand on. He signed that (very lucrative) contract and put himself in this position for this season and possibly next. If the FO wants Manny to play out the season and are clear with Manny that a decision is not going to be made until after the season then that's the end of it.

Manny really has nothing legitimate to complain about and it appears to me that he thinks he does. ..."

&

"Manny seems upset that they're not telling him either way, but why should they have to? What if they signed the extension now and, God forbid, Manny tore an ACL? The FO has absolutely no obligation or good reason to sit down and decide whether or not to pick up his option at this point and Manny has no grounds on which to quibble about it. ... Of course, this is all conjecture (or is it, considering his comments to the media?)..."

************

Then Yaz4Ever:
"Plenty of blame to go around, guys and gals. I have zero doubt (with little "hard" evidence) that the front office is using the media to further their interests. I also have zero doubt (with little "hard" evidence) that Manny is going to do what he wants until he gets what he wants. Anyone who sees one side of this coin without acknowledging the other is, in my very humble opinion, naive. ...
I'm a huge Manny fan and have made very little secret of how over-rated I feel Theo is, but in this case they both need to grow up a bit and do what's right for the team and its fans. As much as I love Manny and his hitting ability, I don't see him on the roster next year. I don't see the need to trash him from here on out, though. I also don't see the need for Manny to act like the "petulant child" so many here have already noted. It doesn't serve either sides interests (unless you're Scott Boras)."

That's all I keep thinking.

I agree with 9Casey and others who have said that if it is the case, it's horrible. I love Manny, but if this were true, even I would not gloss over it.

But how would I know if it's true? And why should I believe it is?

Certainly not because those hacks (agenda-driven, etc., as detailed elsewhere) tell me to!

I heard the Lobel comments on WEEI when he talked about the K vs Mariano and it seems to keep on being exaggerated.

First he stated that the fine was 6 figures, he never said on WEEI 500,000.

Second he stated that the perception, a key word, in the FO was that Manny didn't even try.

My take is that Bob was being used by the front office in this issue.

I personally don't think he took the three strikes on purpose. I just don't think that is like him, the man does have some pride.

As for the speculation about the FO interplay between the two parties, who the frag knows but this FO has shown it is not afraid to use the hammer in negotiations. At this time they have one in each hand, the Option and a press corps that is just salivating about letting loose the hounds.

Is the team tired of his act? Beats me but we do know that not everybody on the team likes the act, see Schilling comments back in 05 while in Tampa Bay re: the day off fiasco as one example.

As for Francona, I think we can assume (ass-u-me) he is tired because his admission in Seattle that Manny took himself out of the line-up is the closest I have ever seen him throw someone under the bus while he has been in Boston. I will say this, having Manny on the team ensures excitement.

And by the way, thank god for JOS. What a service. The Sox go through a crisis like this every season, it seems, and in the past I'd be reduced to banging my head against the wall, gently weeping, or ducking my mother's phone calls, which tend to emulate L-girl's trademark gag, "We're dooooomed!"---except my mother is serious. At least with JOS I can get the rhythym of my head-banging in sync with other sufferers. It means a lot.

s1c, I heard Lobel live that morning, too. We've been getting him on WSBK cable (CBS4 sister station) up here for years, so I'm kind of familiar with him. My take on that morning? He had vodka on his corn flakes, and was nipping from the Smirnoff's thoughout. It was all slurs and innuendo.
It is clear that someone on the team or in the FO is leaking some shit. McAdam did not witness the McCormick incident, it was 'reported' to him and Rosenthal's latest definitely needs some context (maybe Manny was just pissing around?). Anyway, Redsock's titling the earlier thread "Knights of the Keyboard" is gold. Almost 70 years after Teddy Ballgame coined the phrase, a different set of assholes are still at it. As a species, we are doooomed.

A reasonable edit, Laura. I was mostly referencing how the US armed services tend to prey on low income minorities, but honestly, there are lots of people on that list with the low income minorities. Most of those people are equally poorly connected though.

Tek: Pls bat RH. Always.

Joe Grav said...

I love Jon Lester. LOVE.

Amy said...

We missed the first pitch. ARgghh.

Sarah Gates said...

Perhaps I read between the lines and anticipated the complaint

Yeah, I was with Laura here, I must have read the question as, uh, judgmental. ;)

Amy said...

Tek: that was way too fast an at bat.

ish said...

EINSTEIN gets in the act!

Sarah Gates said...

Where by Laura, I mean Amy.

Apparently I'm not multitasking well today.

Amy said...

Cora on base.

Radio guy on RKO described Tek, Crisp and LBJ as three number 9 hitters. I hope he watched that double.

ish said...

LBJ Giving Nady a crash course in Wall Ball!

phil said...

Sweet.

redsock said...

I LIKE IT!

nice d, nady!

I do believe that was Laura's boy.

L-girl said...

That's my boy!!

s1c said...

4-0 yeah baby!!!

Amy said...

I thought that's what you meant, Sarah. I live with an addled brain these days so am used to interpreting other's mysterious errors as well.

phil said...

<3 league-average pitching.

L-girl said...

Sarah, one thing I'm learning working in military resistance is how it's more class/income than people of colour. I guess I knew that, but now I'm really seeing it.

Weee, this game is fun!

s1c said...

I, uh, love this expression, not.

Just wanted to see if you were paying attention ;)

Amy said...

Two more runs, and we are on target for that 24 run game.

Amy said...

Oh, well, I will take one.

ish said...

Uhhhhhhhhhh.

L-girl said...

OK Sarah and Amy, I'm a tad more transparent than I thought!

L-girl said...

s1c, I was just testing you to see how much you were reading.

redsock said...

Nice to see Ellsworth with a double.

Joe Grav said...

Go back to Aruba biaaaaaaaaaaaaaach

s1c said...

l-girl - I stop by frequently.

ish said...

So now we're on pace for 16-0 win.

Rut roh.

Sarah Gates said...

Laura, you're absolutely right about the class/income more than minority targeting, but there's quite a bit of cross-over between the have-nots and the minorities. I'm not sure that can be discounted entirely, even though it's not a directly causal relationship.

Maybe not. Post hoc ero propter hoc?

phil said...

Outs, please.

ish said...

ESPN has to tell everyone that last play was scored a single.

ESPN. Wide World of Stupid.

phil said...

He's fucking Derek Jeter. Throw him a low strike so he can ground into a double play.

s1c said...

Laura, you're absolutely right about the class/income

Actually I think that depends on the branch of service. Army and Marines maybe, Navy and Air Force not so much.

ish said...

CI is not being run on Youk sweat.

Amy said...

Thank you, Phil, for advising Lester so well!

redsock said...

CIDP!!!!

phil said...

I suppose a belt-high strike works too.

L-girl said...

This team responds well to controversy!

Score predictions for when I get home??

Amy said...

How long til you get home?

redsock said...

6-0

Sarah Gates said...

Less need for red shirts in those branches, I think.

Amy said...

Nice, Lester. We do love you.

phil said...

I'm going with 8-3 on a late slappy solo shot and a few bloops to right field.

L-girl said...

l-girl - I stop by frequently.

I see your URL in my Statcounter.

And you're right about Navy/Air Force. There's a reason most resisters are marine/army.

s1c said...

1st and 2nd no outs (shrug) I'll still sit your sorry asses down!!! - JL

L-girl said...

K!!!
